Yes—an AI video generator can redesign parts of footage you already have by following a text prompt. Documented examples include replacing a background, changing lighting, removing or adding objects, recoloring elements, and applying a new visual style. The practical advantage is that you describe the change instead of rebuilding every mask, composite, and keyframe by hand.
“Without manual editing” does not mean “without review.” Current workflows still ask you to preview a reference frame, refine the instruction, and inspect the generated result. Runway says its Edit Studio can carry one edit across every shot in a multi-shot sequence, including cuts, for sequences up to 30 seconds at 1080p; other tools may generate short clips or add editable results to a timeline. The best choice depends on whether you are modifying existing footage, creating a new clip, or combining both.
What does redesigning a scene with an AI video generator mean?
Scene redesign is a targeted change to footage that already exists. You keep the basic action, framing, or performance and ask a model to alter selected visual elements. Runway describes editing an uploaded video or an existing AI clip, while Adobe documents prompt edits for both uploaded and generated video.
Typical requests include “replace the office with a rainy train station,” “make the sunset lighting cooler,” “remove the sign behind the actor,” or “turn the practical lamp into a glowing paper lantern.” These are different from text-to-video generation, where the system creates a new shot from a prompt, image, or clip with no requirement to preserve the original scene.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Preservation is not automatic. A prompt that changes too many things at once can alter a subject’s appearance, camera movement, timing, or background details that you intended to keep. Treat each generation as a proposed version that requires inspection.
How does prompt-based scene redesign work?
The common pattern is upload, describe, preview, refine, and generate. The labels differ by product, but the decision points are similar.
- Choose the source footage. Use a clip whose subject, motion, and camera angle are already close to the desired result. Keep an untouched copy so you can compare versions.
- State one visual objective. Name the element to change and the replacement: for example, “replace the plain gray wall with a brick wall.” Avoid combining a background swap, wardrobe change, new camera move, and weather effect in the first attempt.
- Specify what must remain. Add constraints such as “keep the person’s face, pose, framing, and walking speed unchanged.” These instructions reduce unintended redesign, although they do not guarantee perfect preservation.
- Preview before committing. Runway’s documented Edit Studio flow shows a reference frame for review and refinement before generating the sequence. Adobe’s workflow accepts a prompt and generates a result, with frame-level image-editing options also documented.
- Generate a version. The service renders a new clip or an edited sequence. Rendering time, available models, and plan access vary and can change.
- Inspect motion and cuts. Check several frames, not only the first image. Look for flicker, drifting edges, altered faces, inconsistent shadows, and changes that appear after a cut.
Runway’s product documentation describes this workflow for its AI video generator and editor at Runway AI Video Generator and Runway AI Video Editor. Adobe’s prompt-editing instructions are published in Edit Videos Using Text Prompts.

Which parts of a scene can an AI video generator change?
Vendor documentation supports several categories of edit. Describe the category explicitly so the model has a clear target.
Backgrounds and environments
Background replacement is useful when the performance is good but the location is wrong. Specify the new setting, time of day, weather, and perspective, then tell the model to retain the subject and camera framing. A replacement that does not match the original lens perspective or light direction will look pasted in even when the pixels are technically changed.
Lighting and color
Runway describes relighting a scene, and Adobe shows examples such as recoloring flowers. Name the direction and quality of light rather than using only a mood word: “soft blue light from camera left, with warm practical lights unchanged.” Ask to preserve skin tones or other important colors when they must not shift.

Adding or removing objects
Both Runway and Adobe list adding and removing elements. Identify the object, its position, and its interaction with the scene. For removal, describe the intended clean plate or replacement surface. For addition, include approximate scale, depth, and whether the object should cast a shadow or move with the camera.
Style and appearance
Runway Research describes Aleph as able to add, remove, or transform objects and modify style and lighting in context. A style instruction should be bounded: “apply a hand-painted poster texture while keeping the original motion and composition.” Broad style prompts can change facial details, textures, and small background features.
Framing and motion
The supplied product pages emphasize environment, lighting, objects, and style. They do not establish a universal guarantee for reframing or inventing complex new camera motion while preserving every other detail. If a camera move is essential, treat it as a separate generation or a conventional edit rather than assuming a prompt will deliver it reliably.
Can one prompt change every shot in a sequence?
Sometimes, but sequence-wide behavior is a major differentiator. Runway states that Edit Studio’s Aleph 2.0 applies an edit across every shot in a multi-shot sequence, including across cuts, up to 30 seconds at 1080p. This is a vendor statement, not an independent quality test; verify the current feature and plan access before relying on it.
Applying the same instruction across cuts is valuable when the change is global, such as a new color treatment or a consistent environment. It can be counterproductive when each shot needs a different perspective, lighting direction, or object position. In that case, split the work into shot-level prompts and check continuity manually.

What is the difference between editing existing footage and generating a new clip?
Editing starts with pixels you want to preserve; generation starts with an instruction for what to create. A tool can support both, but the controls and limits are not interchangeable.
| Workflow | Starting material | Documented capability | Stated limits or access | Review path |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Runway AI Video Generator | Prompt, image, clip, or existing video | Edits such as relighting, backdrop swaps, and adding or removing objects | Specific limits not stated on the cited generator page | Generation workflow; use the editor for sequence-oriented work |
| Runway Edit Studio (Aleph 2.0) | Uploaded real video or an existing AI clip | One edit can be applied across multi-shot footage, including cuts | Up to 30 seconds at 1080p; paid-plan access stated by Runway | Preview a reference frame, refine, then generate |
| Adobe Firefly prompt editing | Uploaded or generated video | Remove or replace elements, change backgrounds, and recolor or otherwise modify a scene | Model availability can change; the help page was updated August 20, 2026 | Prompt generation plus documented frame-level image-editing options |
| Adobe Premiere Generative Media Tool | Premiere timeline project | Generate video clips or sound effects and add them as editable clips | The cited overview does not state a sequence-wide redesign limit | Results are placed in the timeline for review and refinement |
| Canva AI video clip | Text prompt | Generate a short clip, then open it in Canva’s video editor | Eight seconds with audio or six seconds without audio; English-only prompts are stated | Edit the generated clip in Canva’s editor |
The Adobe Premiere capability is timeline generation, not evidence that one prompt automatically redesigns every existing cut. Canva’s documented flow is also generation-first. Read the product specifications as current vendor claims, not as a neutral ranking of output quality.
Which tools support prompt-based redesign?
Runway
Runway’s AI Video Generator page describes starting from a prompt, image, or clip and editing existing footage. Its AI Video Editor page is the relevant reference for multi-shot editing, reference-frame preview, and the stated 30-second, 1080p sequence limit. Runway Research’s July 25, 2025 announcement, Introducing Runway Aleph, describes in-context additions, removals, transformations, style changes, and lighting modifications.

Adobe Firefly
Adobe’s Edit Videos Using Text Prompts page, updated August 20, 2026, documents edits to uploaded and generated video. The page lists Firefly Video 2 (Preview), Kling 3.0 Omni, Runway Gen-4 Aleph, Ray3.14 Modify, and Ray3 Modify as models available in that documented workflow. Model lists and access can change, so check the interface you see rather than assuming every account has every model.
Adobe Premiere
The Generative Media Tool overview, updated September 9, 2026, describes generating video clips or sound effects inside a Premiere timeline and adding the results as editable clips. This is useful when you want generated material alongside conventional edits, but it does not by itself establish automatic redesign across existing cuts.
Canva
Canva’s Create a Video Clip in Canva AI help page describes text-prompt generation followed by editing in its Video Editor. It states eight-second clips with audio or six-second clips without audio and English-only prompt support. Those are product specifications and may change.

How should you write a prompt that preserves the original shot?
Use a compact structure that separates the requested change from the invariants:
- Subject and action: identify who or what is moving and what it is doing.
- Target change: name one object, environment, lighting condition, or style to alter.
- Continuity constraints: state that face, clothing, pose, timing, camera path, framing, and unrelated objects should remain unchanged.
- Physical integration: describe matching perspective, shadows, reflections, depth of field, and motion blur when those cues matter.
- Shot scope: say whether the instruction applies to the entire clip or only a defined moment.
For example: “Replace the beige wall with a green-tile subway platform. Keep the actor’s face, hair, coat, walking speed, camera framing, and edit timing unchanged. Match the original perspective and direction of light; add realistic contact shadows. Apply this change throughout the clip.” Generate that version before adding a second change.
When a tool offers a reference-frame preview, use it to catch an incorrect interpretation early. If the preview changes the wrong element, rewrite the prompt with fewer adjectives and a more explicit object or location.
What is a reliable end-to-end workflow?
- Define the deliverable. Record the source resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, duration, and which details are non-negotiable.
- Trim the working clip. A short, focused segment makes it easier to diagnose drift. Preserve the full source separately.
- Pick an existing-footage workflow. Use a tool that explicitly accepts uploaded video when preservation matters. A text-to-video-only workflow will not know which performance details to retain.
- Write a single-change prompt. Include continuity constraints and physical integration details.
- Preview and refine. Correct the interpretation before spending a full generation. For multi-shot footage, confirm whether the tool applies the instruction across cuts and what duration and resolution are supported.
- Generate multiple candidates when permitted. Compare continuity, not just a striking first frame. Keep filenames or notes that identify the prompt used for each version.
- Review at normal speed and frame by frame. Watch faces, hands, text, hard edges, reflections, shadows, and objects that cross a cut.
- Finish in a timeline when needed. Use Premiere or another editor for trims, audio, transitions, masks, and any corrective work the model did not solve.
What constraints should you verify before choosing a tool?
- Existing-video input: confirm that uploads are supported; a generator that only accepts text or still images cannot preserve your original performance in the same way.
- Sequence behavior: ask whether one edit spans multiple shots and cuts or must be repeated for each clip.
- Duration and resolution: Runway documents a maximum of 30 seconds at 1080p for Edit Studio sequences. Canva documents six- or eight-second generated clips depending on audio.
- Prompt language: Canva’s cited help page specifies English-only prompts.
- Plan and model access: Runway states paid-plan availability for Edit Studio and Aleph 2.0; Adobe’s model list can change.
- Timeline integration: Premiere’s documented tool adds generated clips to a timeline, which is different from automatically modifying every existing shot.
- Rights and privacy: review the service’s current terms for footage, outputs, model training, and commercial use before uploading sensitive or client material. The cited product pages do not establish universal rights for every account or region.
What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?
The subject’s identity or clothing drifts
Reduce the edit to one environmental or lighting change and explicitly preserve face, hair, clothing, and body proportions. Use a reference frame if the product provides one, then compare several frames rather than accepting a convincing opening image.
The replacement background looks pasted on
Add perspective, light direction, contact-shadow, reflection, and depth-of-field constraints. If the source camera moves substantially, test shorter sections or a sequence-aware workflow instead of forcing one prompt across incompatible shots.

The model changes details you did not request
Remove decorative language, list the elements that must remain, and make the target object unambiguous. Generate in stages: background first, then lighting or object changes, rather than asking for every redesign at once.
The feature or model is unavailable
Plan access and model catalogs are volatile. Recheck the current product page, account tier, supported resolution, clip length, and regional availability; do not assume a model named in an older help page is still selectable.
Is “without manual editing” realistic?
It is realistic as a description of the input method: you can request a substantial visual change with natural language instead of manually drawing every mask or keyframe. It is not a promise of one-click perfection. Vendor documentation itself includes preview, refinement, and timeline-review steps, and none of the cited sources independently verifies that every unmentioned scene detail remains unchanged.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I redesign a video without creating a new shot from scratch?
Yes, if the service accepts uploaded video and offers an edit mode rather than only text-to-video generation. Upload the source, describe the specific change, and verify that the tool preserves the performance and framing you need.
How long can an AI-redesigned sequence be?
Limits depend on the product and workflow. Runway documents up to 30 seconds at 1080p for Edit Studio sequences, while Canva documents six- or eight-second generated clips; other limits are not established by the cited pages.
Do AI video editors keep the original audio?
The supplied product descriptions focus on visual edits and do not establish universal audio-preservation behavior. Check the export or timeline settings and keep the original audio track available for replacement or synchronization.
Can I use prompt-edited footage in commercial work?
Commercial rights vary by service, plan, model, region, and the source material you upload. Read the current terms for your account and obtain any permissions required for people, locations, logos, music, or client footage before publishing.
