AI video-generation models turn text, images, video, or actions into a sequence of frames by generating a compact representation of that sequence first. Most modern systems compress video into a latent space, divide the latent representation into space-and-time tokens, and use a transformer or another sequence model to predict a coherent result. Diffusion systems begin with noise and iteratively denoise it; a decoder then converts the finished latent sequence into frames, sometimes followed by spatial or temporal super-resolution.
This design solves a fundamental problem: video must remain plausible not only in each frame, but also across time. A useful model therefore has to preserve identity, shapes, camera geometry, object interactions, motion, frame rate, and scene continuity while following the input prompt.
What are AI video-generation models actually generating?
They usually do not generate every red, green, and blue pixel directly. Instead, an encoder compresses the video into a lower-dimensional latent representation that retains the visual information needed for reconstruction. The generator operates on this smaller representation, and a decoder maps the result back into ordinary video frames.

An image can be treated as a one-frame video in this framework. That allows one model to support text-to-video as well as image animation, video extension, looping, and filling missing frames, provided the model has been trained and conditioned for those tasks.
How are AI video models trained?
Training begins with visual examples and descriptions. Datasets can contain captioned videos, still images, proprietary or partnered material, custom collections, and human-curated examples. Captions tell the model what appears in a clip, how subjects interact, what the camera is doing, and other details that connect language with visual change.
OpenAI has described a descriptive recaptioning process for improving prompt fidelity: existing clips receive richer textual descriptions before training. The precise mixture of data differs by system, so a capability demonstrated by one model should not be assumed to exist in every model.
The training objective depends on the architecture. In a diffusion system, the model sees a clean latent video with noise added and learns to predict a cleaner version. Repeating this across many noise levels teaches a denoiser how to move from a random latent sequence toward a sequence that matches the visual and textual conditions. An autoregressive system instead learns to predict the next latent state or token from the preceding context.
How does a video become space-and-time tokens?
After compression, the latent video is divided along both spatial and temporal dimensions. Each resulting patch represents a small region at a particular point, or short interval, in time. A transformer can then attend to relationships among patches: for example, the same person’s face across successive frames, or the way a moving object changes position relative to the background.
Tokenizing space and time is more than a formatting trick. It lets the model use the same basic machinery for clips with different shapes and lengths. Sora’s published description says an image is represented as a single-frame video, while longer clips become sequences of spacetime patches. The model can therefore learn visual patterns that apply to both still and moving inputs.
Longer videos create a much larger token sequence. That increases memory use and latency, which is why published systems often limit duration, frame rate, resolution, or context length. Windowed attention and causal compression are examples of techniques intended to control those costs.

How does text-to-video conditioning work?
A text encoder converts the prompt into numerical representations. Attention mechanisms then connect those text representations to the visual tokens being generated. Words such as “red jacket,” “wide shot,” or “slow camera pan” become conditioning signals that influence which latent patches are likely at each location and time.
The prompt is not the only possible condition. In image-to-video generation, the input image supplies appearance and composition while the text specifies motion or changes. Video-to-video systems can use an existing clip as a structural guide. Conditioning can also support operations such as extending a clip, creating a loop, or filling a missing temporal section.
Prompt adherence depends on both the quality of the captions used in training and the model’s attention design. A model may understand the words in a prompt yet still compromise on details when several objects, actions, and camera instructions compete for limited capacity.
How does diffusion create a video from noise?
Diffusion generation is iterative. OpenAI’s Sora System Card describes it as starting with a base video that looks like static noise and gradually transforming it by removing noise over many steps.

- Initialize a latent video. The system creates a noisy latent sequence with the required duration, resolution, and aspect ratio.
- Apply the conditions. Text, an input image, or an input video is supplied to the denoising network through its conditioning and attention layers.
- Predict a cleaner sequence. At each step, the denoiser estimates how the current noisy patches should change to better match the learned video distribution and the input conditions.
- Repeat the schedule. Multiple denoising steps progressively replace random structure with recognizable subjects, backgrounds, camera movement, and temporal transitions.
- Decode the latent. Once the sequence is sufficiently clean, a video decoder converts it into pixel frames.
Because the model denoises many patches while attending across time, it can coordinate changes between frames instead of making each frame independently. More denoising steps can improve quality but increase generation time; the exact speed-quality trade-off depends on the model and its inference settings.
Why is temporal consistency so difficult?
A still image needs spatial plausibility at one instant. A video must preserve that plausibility repeatedly while subjects move and the camera changes. The system has to maintain identity, object shape, scene geometry, interactions, motion dynamics, frame rate, and continuity over the requested duration.
These goals can conflict. Increasing motion may make an action more visible but can also make hands, faces, or object boundaries unstable. Extending duration increases the opportunity for drift. Higher resolution raises the number of patches and therefore memory and compute requirements.

Sora’s system card says the model gains “foresight of many frames at a time.” The practical idea is that the generator considers a broader temporal context, so it can preserve a subject even when that subject temporarily leaves the camera view and returns. This is fundamentally different from running an image generator separately on every frame, where there is no shared memory of the subject’s earlier appearance.
Open-model overviews commonly evaluate video systems on adherence to inputs, realism, aesthetics, motion dynamics, spatiotemporal consistency, frame rate, and duration. Memory use and latency are operational constraints alongside visual quality.
What happens after latent generation?
The decoder reconstructs ordinary frames from the generated latent sequence. Some systems then use a cascade of enhancement models. Google’s W.A.L.T. publication describes a base latent video-diffusion model followed by two video super-resolution diffusion models, adding stages that improve spatial detail and output resolution.
A cascade costs additional computation and can introduce its own failure modes. Enhancement cannot reliably recover a detail that the base model never represented, and an aggressive temporal stage can change motion or texture. For that reason, the final resolution number should always be read together with the model’s base generation process, frame rate, and duration limits.
What is the difference between diffusion, autoregressive, and hybrid video models?
Diffusion systems refine an entire noisy latent sequence over repeated steps. Autoregressive systems predict a sequence one token or latent state at a time. Hybrid systems combine a base generator with specialized enhancement stages.

| Architecture | How it generates | Typical strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diffusion transformer | Iteratively denoises latent spacetime tokens while attending to conditioning information. | High sample quality, flexible text/image/video conditioning, and joint modeling of space and time. | Multiple denoising steps increase latency and compute cost. |
| Autoregressive dynamics model | Predicts the next latent token or state from prior context, sometimes with a separate action model. | Natural fit for controllable or interactive environments and sequential dynamics. | Step-by-step generation can accumulate errors and has different speed constraints from diffusion. |
| Hybrid cascade | Uses a base latent generator, then one or more spatial or temporal super-resolution models. | Separates broad motion generation from detail enhancement and can raise output resolution. | Extra stages add computation and may alter texture or motion if enhancement is poorly matched. |
Google DeepMind’s Genie illustrates the autoregressive route: it combines a spatiotemporal video tokenizer, an autoregressive dynamics model, and a latent action model trained from unlabelled internet videos for interactive environments. It predicts learned latent dynamics rather than using a diffusion denoiser as the central generator.

- Define the request. The user supplies a text prompt and, where supported, an image, video, or action condition. Duration, aspect ratio, and resolution become generation parameters.
- Encode the inputs. The text encoder and any visual encoder convert the conditions into representations that can interact with latent video tokens.
- Create or initialize latent tokens. A diffusion model starts from noise; an autoregressive model initializes a sequence and predicts its states in order.
- Model spatial and temporal relationships. Transformer attention or another sequence mechanism links patches within frames and across frames, allowing appearance and motion to influence one another.
- Generate the sequence. Diffusion repeatedly denoises; autoregressive generation advances token by token. The process follows the supplied conditions but samples from learned visual patterns, so exact outputs vary.
- Decode and enhance. A decoder produces frames, and optional super-resolution stages add detail or increase spatial size.
- Package the result. The system assembles frames at the selected frame rate and returns a video file or preview. Any sound generation, if offered, is a separate capability and should not be assumed from the visual model alone.
What published specifications show about current model designs?
Numbers from named systems are useful illustrations, not universal limits. They describe particular versions and dates, often under specific product or publication conditions.

|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Sora demonstration (2024) | Up to one minute of high-fidelity video | A capability described for the Sora model presented by OpenAI in 2024; it is not a guarantee for every interface or release. |
| Sora System Card (2024) | Up to 1080p and 20 seconds maximum in the described product | Product limits in that system-card description, which can differ from a research demonstration. |
| Google Research W.A.L.T. publication (2024) | 512 × 896 resolution at 8 frames per second | A configuration reported for that publication, not a general limit on video diffusion. |
| Meta AI Movie Gen publication (2024) | 30 billion parameters; 73,000 video-token maximum context; 16 seconds at 16 frames per second | The largest model and context configuration described by the authors. |
| Google DeepMind Genie publication (2024) | 11 billion parameters | The parameter count of the published interactive-environment model. |
Parameter count alone does not predict the best user result. Conditioning design, training data, token compression, context length, decoding schedule, enhancement stages, and safety controls all affect practical behavior.
How should you compare two AI video models?
There is no single apples-to-apples score covering all published systems in the material above. Compare models against the job you need to perform.
- Prompt adherence: Does the output include the requested subjects, actions, camera movement, and style?
- Temporal and identity consistency: Do faces, clothing, objects, and layouts remain stable through motion and occlusion?
- Motion quality: Are trajectories, interactions, and speed changes believable rather than merely smooth?
- Resolution and frame rate: Are the output dimensions and playback rate suitable for the intended delivery format?
- Duration: Can the model create the required clip in one pass, or will you need extensions and edits?
- Input and editing modes: Does it accept text only, or can it animate images, transform video, loop a shot, or fill missing frames?
- Latency and hardware cost: How many denoising or prediction steps are required, and what memory or hosted compute does the workflow consume?
- Openness, licensing, and safety: Can you inspect or run the model, what usage rights apply, and what safeguards govern inputs and outputs?
Test representative prompts rather than a single showcase prompt. Include a person leaving and re-entering the frame, interacting objects, a camera move, and a longer duration if those conditions matter to your project.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are AI video models just image generators run frame by frame?
No. Frame-by-frame image generation lacks a shared representation of motion and identity, so small differences can accumulate into flicker, changing faces, or warped objects. Modern video models compress and generate temporal information jointly, using spacetime tokens, temporal attention, autoregressive state, or a combination of these methods.
Image models still contribute to some workflows: an image can provide the starting appearance, and an image-to-video model can animate it. The video component is the mechanism that coordinates changes over time.

Longer, higher-resolution, higher-frame-rate clips require more latent tokens and therefore more memory and computation. A model may support a short 1080p output but require lower resolution or shorter duration for faster generation. Conversely, a high parameter count can improve capacity while increasing serving cost and latency.

Outputs are probabilistic. Repeating the same prompt can produce different clips, and a prompt that works for one composition may fail when additional subjects or actions are added. Treat generated video as an iterative process: specify the main subject and motion clearly, use an image or reference clip when appearance matters, and divide a long sequence into shots when continuity becomes unreliable.
Safety controls are part of a production system, not a cosmetic add-on. They can restrict certain prompts, inputs, or outputs, and their behavior varies by provider and release. Check the applicable usage policy before designing a workflow around a particular capability.
What is the key idea to remember?
AI video generation is best understood as sequence generation in a compressed world. The model learns how visual content changes across space and time, conditions that learned distribution on text or other inputs, generates a latent sequence through diffusion or autoregressive prediction, and decodes that sequence into frames. Temporal coherence—not merely making attractive individual images—is the defining engineering challenge.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does an AI video model need to generate a clip?
Generation time depends on clip length, resolution, frame rate, token count, denoising or prediction steps, and the hardware or hosted service running the model. Diffusion systems generally spend time on several refinement passes, while autoregressive systems advance through a sequence of states.
Can an AI video model keep a character’s face consistent after the character leaves the shot?
It can, but consistency is not guaranteed. Models that use broad temporal context can retain information about a subject during temporary occlusion; references, shorter shots, and simpler motion usually make identity preservation easier.
Why does increasing video resolution make generation more expensive?
Higher resolution creates more spatial patches in every frame, which increases the latent sequence size and the attention and decoding work. If frame rate or duration also increases, the number of temporal tokens rises as well.
Do all AI video models generate sound with the picture?
No. The visual generation pipeline described here produces frames. Audio generation may be offered as a separate model or feature, so confirm that capability instead of assuming it is included.
