The often-cited 71% figure does not mean 71% of companies are “behind.” In Microsoft and LinkedIn’s 2024 Work Trend Index, it means 71% of surveyed business leaders said they would prefer a less-experienced applicant with AI skills over a more-experienced applicant without them. That preference signals a hiring shift: practical AI fluency is becoming evidence of employability while most employers have not supplied enough training.
You can respond without chasing every new tool. Build transferable ability to choose an appropriate system, write useful instructions, check outputs, protect confidential data, and integrate AI into a real workflow. Pair those skills with analytical thinking, communication, resilience and role-specific knowledge, then prove them with a portfolio example.
What does the 71% AI-skills statistic actually mean?
The 71% number describes a stated hiring preference, not the proportion of companies that lack AI capability. Microsoft and LinkedIn surveyed business leaders for the 2024 Work Trend Index and found that 71% would choose a less-experienced candidate who had AI skills over a more-experienced candidate who did not. It is therefore a signal about how employers may weigh evidence during recruitment.
The same survey shows why the preference matters. Seventy-five percent of knowledge workers reported using AI at work, 66% of leaders said they would not hire someone without AI skills, and only 39% of AI users said their employer had provided training. In other words, usage is spreading faster than formal instruction, shifting responsibility for safe, effective practice toward individuals and teams.

| Finding | What was measured | Career implication |
|---|---|---|
| 71% | Business leaders preferring a less-experienced applicant with AI skills to a more-experienced applicant without them (Microsoft and LinkedIn, 2024) | A demonstrable AI work sample can influence selection when experience levels are close. |
| 75% | Knowledge workers using AI at work (Microsoft and LinkedIn, 2024) | Basic familiarity is becoming common; reliable, role-specific application is a stronger differentiator. |
| 66% | Leaders saying they would not hire someone without AI skills (Microsoft and LinkedIn, 2024) | Job seekers should be ready to explain how they use AI responsibly, not merely list a tool. |
| 39% | AI users receiving training from their company (Microsoft and LinkedIn, 2024) | Self-directed learning and documented practice can fill a training gap, but should follow workplace policies. |
These are survey results and reported preferences, not a guarantee that any individual applicant will beat a more experienced specialist. Industry, location, role seniority and the quality of a candidate’s evidence still matter.
Are companies really behind on AI skills?
Many organizations face a capability gap, but “behind” is too broad a label. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 says 63% of employers identify skills gaps as the biggest barrier to business transformation. Its projection that 39% of workers’ existing skill sets will be transformed or become outdated by 2030 describes the scale of change, not a prediction that every job will disappear.
LinkedIn’s Work Change Report 2025 estimates that 70% of the skills used in most jobs could change by 2030. That is a broad forecast rather than a precise figure for every occupation or country. Both reports place AI and big data among the fastest-growing capabilities, alongside networks and cybersecurity and general technological literacy.

Organizations can be advanced in one department and unprepared in another. A company may have an approved assistant for drafting but no process for checking generated figures, or a data-science team but no guidance for sales staff handling customer information. Assess your target employer’s policies and workflow maturity instead of assuming that a headline percentage describes it.

1. Task and tool selection
Translate a business problem into a task an AI system can assist with, then choose the least complex tool that meets the need. Decide whether a spreadsheet formula, search, retrieval system, language model, image model or conventional software is appropriate. Record the goal, inputs, expected format and a human owner for the final decision.
2. Prompt and instruction design
Give the system context, constraints, audience, examples and an output format. Break a complex request into stages and ask for assumptions to be surfaced. Reusable templates are more valuable than clever one-off wording because colleagues can inspect and improve them.

Check calculations, citations, dates, edge cases and tone against authoritative material. Test the same instruction with normal and deliberately difficult examples. Learn when a result needs subject-matter review or should be rejected outright; fluent language is not evidence of accuracy.
4. Privacy, security and responsible use
Know what your employer classifies as confidential, personal, regulated or export-controlled data. Do not paste customer records, unpublished code or credentials into a consumer service unless your organization has approved that use and the contractual controls are clear. Understand retention, access, sharing and deletion settings, and document the human approval point.
5. Workflow integration
Connect AI assistance to the way work is actually delivered: intake, drafting, review, approval, handoff and measurement. Define a baseline such as time to first draft, error rate or response backlog, then compare it with the assisted process. Integration skill shows that you can improve an outcome rather than merely generate text.

6. Human skills that increase the value of AI
The World Economic Forum continues to emphasize analytical thinking, resilience, flexibility, leadership and collaboration alongside technical abilities. Clear writing, interviewing, negotiation and domain judgment supply the context an automated system lacks. Treat AI as leverage for these skills, not a replacement for them.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Will AI skills matter more than years of experience?
Usually, neither factor wins in isolation. The 71% result shows that some leaders will trade years of experience for relevant AI capability, particularly when the less-experienced applicant can demonstrate a useful result. Senior expertise still provides judgment, relationships, accountability and knowledge of failure modes that a tool cannot supply.
Position yourself as an experienced practitioner who can improve a process with AI, or as a newer practitioner who has already learned the process and can apply AI safely. On a résumé and in interviews, connect the skill to an outcome: reduced manual steps, faster analysis, clearer documentation or better service quality. Avoid claiming that AI “automated” work when you only experimented with a public chatbot.
How can I prove AI ability without overstating it?
A small, inspectable work sample is stronger than a list of applications. Remove confidential information and explain what you did, what the system did, how you checked it and what remained human-owned.
Portfolio project format
- Define the job problem. State the audience, starting condition and success measure, such as reducing a weekly reporting task from four hours to two while maintaining accuracy.
- Show the workflow. Include the instruction template, data-handling choices, review checkpoints and fallback method. Redact or replace real personal and company data with clearly labeled synthetic examples.
- Document evaluation. Test representative cases, record errors and describe the corrections or escalation rules. If you did not run a formal benchmark, say so.
- Report the result honestly. Give the sample size, date and conditions. Distinguish a measured time saving from an expectation, and identify what still requires expert review.
- Explain transfer. Describe how the approach could adapt to the target role and which parts depend on a particular tool.
Good examples include a customer-support triage rubric, a spreadsheet-analysis assistant with manual reconciliation, a research brief that links every claim to a source, or a code-review checklist that flags issues for a human developer. A polished screenshot without method or validation is weak evidence.

Which AI certification is worth it?
No source establishes one universal credential or a guaranteed salary premium. Choose training by the work you need to perform and the evidence it lets you produce, not by the popularity of a badge.
| Evaluation criterion | Questions to ask before enrolling |
|---|---|
| Role relevance | Does the syllabus use the data, regulations and workflows of my target occupation? |
| Hands-on practice | Will I complete realistic tasks, revise failed attempts and receive feedback? |
| Evidence of outcomes | Does assessment require a project with a measurable result rather than multiple-choice recall alone? |
| Assessment quality | Are submissions independently graded, identity-checked or reviewed against a clear rubric? |
| Privacy and data coverage | Does it teach retention, access controls, copyright, personal data handling and organizational policy? |
| Cost and time | Can I finish the work and maintain practice without sacrificing essential responsibilities? |
| Portability | Will the underlying method remain useful if an employer changes vendors? |
| Tool dependence | What portion is transferable reasoning, and what portion is tied to one interface or model? |
A short, assessed course can be sensible when an employer recognizes it or when it produces a portfolio project. A vendor-specific certificate may help for a job that explicitly requires that platform, but it should supplement—not replace—general evaluation, privacy and workflow skills. Ask hiring managers in your target field which evidence they trust before paying for a program.
What is a practical 90-day plan for closing the gap?
Use a staged plan that turns learning into evidence while limiting risk.
Days 1–30: establish a safe baseline
- Choose one target role and list three recurring tasks from current job descriptions.
- Read your employer’s AI, privacy and acceptable-use rules; if they are unclear, ask the data-protection or security contact before testing with work information.
- Learn basic prompting, output checking and model limitations using public or synthetic data.
- Keep a log of instructions, failures, corrections and time spent.
Days 31–60: build and measure
- Select one low-risk task, such as drafting an internal outline or classifying synthetic records.
- Create a repeatable workflow with an explicit human review step and a non-AI fallback.
- Measure a baseline and an assisted run using the same sample and note quality defects, not just speed.
- Ask a colleague or subject-matter expert to challenge the result and record changes.
Days 61–90: package and apply
- Turn the project into a redacted case study with method, evaluation and limitations.
- Map each step to a requirement in the target role and write a concise résumé bullet.
- Practice explaining a failure, a privacy decision and the point at which you overruled the system.
- Set a quarterly review date to retest the workflow as tools, policies and job requirements change.
How should employers respond to the AI skills gap?
Hiring more AI-fluent people without training the existing workforce can widen operational and ethical risk. Leaders can begin by publishing approved use cases, prohibited data categories and escalation routes, then provide time for supervised practice. Measure quality, security incidents and employee workload as well as productivity.
Constance Noonan Hadley, an organisational psychologist at the Institute for Life at Work and Boston University Questrom School of Business, described the change this way: “Over the past few decades, companies have been renegotiating the psychological contract – the why of work – with their employees… Now companies must renegotiate the ‘operational contract’ – the how of work – with their employees as AI puts more power into the hands of workers in terms of the way the job gets done.” (Microsoft and LinkedIn, 2024 Work Trend Index.)

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
That operational contract should specify who may use which systems, who checks outputs, how performance is assessed and how workers can report a harmful result without penalty. Training is most credible when it is attached to real workflows and followed by feedback, rather than offered as a one-time video or badge.
What mistakes make an AI-skills claim unconvincing?
- Tool-name collecting: Listing many applications without a result suggests shallow exposure.
- Unverified automation claims: Reporting speed gains without a baseline, sample or quality check invites skepticism.
- Ignoring confidentiality: Showing real customer or employer data can create a bigger problem than the project solves.
- Replacing fundamentals: Poor writing, arithmetic or domain knowledge makes AI output harder to evaluate.
- Following a single vendor: Interfaces and model names change; transferable methods protect your investment.
- Promising universal returns: A credential or experiment cannot guarantee a job, promotion or salary increase.
Frequently Asked Questions
How should I write AI experience on my résumé?
Name the business task, the human review you performed and the measured result. For example: “Built a redacted support-triage workflow; evaluated 200 synthetic tickets, documented escalation rules and cut first-pass sorting time by 35% in a controlled pilot.”
Do I need to learn coding to benefit from AI skills?
Not necessarily. Many roles gain value from structured instructions, spreadsheet analysis, source checking and workflow design; coding becomes important when the target job requires automation, data pipelines or software delivery.
Recommended Free Tools
How can I practice if my employer bans public AI tools?
Use synthetic or public-domain data in an approved environment, complete a course sandbox, or design the workflow on paper first. Never bypass a workplace restriction by moving company information to a personal account.
How often should AI skills be refreshed?
Review your workflow at least quarterly and whenever your employer changes an approved tool or policy. Recheck assumptions, access settings and evaluation samples rather than relearning every newly released feature.
Can AI skills help in a regulated profession?
They can, but the review burden is higher. Learn the profession’s record-keeping, confidentiality and approval requirements first, and treat generated material as a draft until an authorized professional validates it.
