Evaluate an AI SEO vendor as you would any other technical supplier: demand verifiable, site-specific evidence; a measurement plan that separates rankings from business outcomes; documented, reversible changes; and a contract that protects your data, assets, and exit rights. Reject guaranteed rankings, “special” access to Google or AI systems, and high-volume AI publishing without expert review. Start with read-only access, test the vendor’s recommendations against Google Search Central guidance, and make production access conditional on clear security, quality-control, and ownership terms.
The process below gives you a repeatable way to vet an agency before it can alter your site or lock you into a long retainer.
What should you verify before hiring an AI SEO vendor?
Verify six things before discussing a long-term engagement: the vendor’s actual results for comparable sites, the method behind those results, how success will be measured, how AI output is controlled, how your data is protected, and what happens when you leave. A polished sales deck is not evidence on its own.

Build a vendor evidence file
Ask each candidate for the exact client name, the client URL or a reference who will confirm the work, the baseline period, the intervention, the dates, the target country and language, and the definition of the reported outcome. Request exports rather than cropped screenshots. A useful evidence file lets you reproduce the claim and see what changed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Baseline: the date range and search-console or analytics view used before work began.
- Intervention: pages, templates, technical changes, links, structured data, internal-link changes, or content operations that the vendor actually performed.
- Outcome: whether the claim concerns impressions, clicks, rankings, qualified leads, revenue, or citations in an AI answer. These are different measures and must not be blended.
- Context: the industry, site size, seasonality, geography, language, and other material conditions.
Google’s hiring guidance recommends asking for previous work and success stories, expected results and timeframes, industry and geographic experience, communication arrangements, and a complete record of site changes with the reasoning behind them. A vendor that will not provide those basics has not earned write access.
Check references yourself
Contact at least one reference through a channel you find independently, not only through a testimonial page. Ask what the vendor changed, how long the engagement lasted, what was disappointing, how quickly errors were corrected, and whether the client retained ownership of content and accounts. Confirm that the reference’s site and market match the case study being presented.
Can an SEO vendor guarantee Google rankings or placement in AI answers?
No. Google Search Central states, “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.” A vendor also cannot credibly guarantee a citation or placement in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, or another generative interface because those systems vary by query, user, country, language, date, model, and available sources.

- “Google-approved,” “Google partner for rankings,” or any suggestion of an inside relationship with the ranking team.
- A “secret ranking signal,” private index, or undisclosed API that supposedly bypasses normal competition.
- A guaranteed position, traffic increase, lead volume, AI citation, or fixed date for achieving it.
- Assurances that a single file, tag, or special markup guarantees inclusion in generative results.
Google says it does not evaluate or endorse third-party SEO tools. It also says those tools do not have access to Google’s internal ranking data and cannot guarantee performance. Ask the salesperson to state precisely which engine, country, language, query set, date range, and citation definition supports any AI-search claim. If those conditions are missing, the claim is not decision-grade evidence.
What a credible forecast looks like
A responsible forecast uses scenarios and assumptions rather than a promise. It may identify technical constraints, estimate the work required, define leading indicators, and set review points at which the plan can be changed. It should explain what would count as failure and what the vendor will do if the expected signal does not appear.
How do you test whether the vendor’s method follows Google’s guidance?
Require a written rationale for every material recommendation and check it against Google Search Central’s published guidance. Give the vendor read access to Search Console during an audit, not immediate write access. Your team should approve production changes and retain a change log that makes every edit reversible.
Use a recommendation register
- Record the proposal: capture the exact URL or template, the proposed change, the expected effect, and the owner.
- Map the rationale: require the vendor to identify the relevant Search Essentials or documented practice, not merely cite a tool score.
- Assess risk: note whether the change can remove pages, alter canonicals, modify redirects, expose data, or affect a large template.
- Approve a test: stage the change on a limited set of pages where possible and define the observation period and rollback trigger.
- Log the result: record deployment time, reviewer, observed effect, and any rollback or correction.
Google’s guidance recommends checking third-party recommendations against its official Search guidance and using Search Console for information directly from Google Search. A vendor’s proprietary score can help organize work, but it is not a substitute for first-party evidence.

Do you need special files for generative search?
Google’s generative-search guidance says there is no need for special “LLMs.txt” files or other markup to appear in Google Search or its generative features. Treat a vendor’s claim that one file guarantees AI visibility as a sales assertion requiring proof, not as an established requirement.
How do you tell whether an AI-generated content program is safe?
Ask the vendor to disclose every point at which AI is used and to show how a qualified person checks the result. Generating many pages with AI without adding value can violate Google’s scaled-content-abuse spam policy, and AI output can contain factual errors even when it reads fluently.
Demand a documented production workflow
- Inputs: which sources, data feeds, interviews, and internal documents ground the draft.
- Generation: which model or service creates outlines, text, images, metadata, or code, and for what purpose.
- Review: who checks facts, originality, search intent, accessibility, legal risk, and technical accuracy.
- Publication: who approves the final page, applies bylines or disclosures, and verifies links and structured data.
- Correction: how errors are reported, prioritized, fixed, and documented after publication.
Google’s published policy is explicit: “Using automation—including AI—to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating ranking in search results is a violation of our spam policies.” The issue is not whether a model touched a draft; it is whether the published work provides value and is produced with trustworthy oversight.
Test a sample before signing
Request a small, paid or unpaid pilot using your real brief and a topic with material business risk. Compare the draft with the source material line by line. Look for invented statistics, unsupported medical or financial claims, copied phrasing, missing caveats, and confident answers to questions the source does not resolve. Ask the reviewer to explain each correction. A generic promise of “human in the loop” is weaker than a named reviewer, checklist, and audit trail.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Protect reader trust
Require bylines and AI disclosures where a reasonable reader would expect them. Your editorial policy should define when subject-matter review is mandatory, how expert credentials are verified, and how updates are dated. Do not let a vendor publish at scale merely to meet a monthly page quota.
What access and data controls should an AI SEO vendor have?
Use least privilege from the first meeting. During discovery, provide only the read access needed to diagnose the site. Before granting production access, inventory every credential, analytics stream, customer record, unpublished asset, and regulated or legally sensitive document the vendor might encounter.
Stage access deliberately
- Audit stage: provide read-only Search Console and analytics access, plus a sanitized site export if required.
- Planning stage: share only the content, issue tracker, and environments needed to prepare approved work.
- Implementation stage: use named accounts, multifactor authentication, role-based permissions, and a time-limited grant. Keep an internal approver in the deployment path.
- Review stage: inspect access logs and revoke unused credentials after each milestone.
Google advises granting read access to Search Console during an audit rather than write access. Follow that principle for every system, including your content management system, tag manager, cloud storage, code repository, customer database, and advertising accounts.

Ask for a supplier data map
For each model, API, cloud service, retrieval system, data store, and subprocessor, require a plain-language record of:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- the business purpose and the data fields sent;
- processing location and cross-border transfers;
- retention period, deletion method, and backup treatment;
- whether prompts or files are used for model training or service improvement;
- tenant separation, encryption, access controls, and administrative logging;
- incident-detection, notification, and response procedures;
- how you are notified of a material provider or configuration change.
AI TrustMark’s supplier framework recommends separating each supplier claim from its evidence, confirming that the evidence applies to the exact product and deployment, and documenting residual uncertainty. Apply that discipline to security claims such as “enterprise-grade” or “private model”; ask what control was tested, for which environment, and on what date.
What should an AI SEO contract include?
Your contract should define the work, the evidence you receive, the controls around changes and data, and a practical way to leave. A vague statement of “AI-powered optimization” creates disputes because it does not specify outputs, approval rights, or ownership.
Define deliverables and measurement
- List the pages, audits, briefs, technical tickets, content items, dashboards, and reports included in each period.
- Define every metric, source, attribution window, geography, device scope, and reporting cadence.
- Separate impressions, clicks, rankings, qualified leads, revenue, and AI-answer citations; do not allow one metric to stand in for another.
- Set review gates at which you can pause, change, or stop work if evidence does not support the next phase.
Set operational and incident terms
- Require approval before publishing, deleting, redirecting, or changing canonical and indexing directives.
- Specify correction times for factual, security, privacy, accessibility, and search-critical errors.
- Require prompt notification of unauthorized changes, data incidents, material subprocessors, and service outages.
- Define confidentiality, permitted use, retention, deletion, and return of your information.
- Reserve evidence or audit rights sufficient to verify the vendor’s reports and controls.
- State responsibility for unauthorized changes and the remedy, whether rollback, correction, service credit, or another agreed measure.
Preserve ownership and portability
State that you own content, briefs, structured data, link assets, dashboards, prompts created for your account, configuration, and historical reports after payment. Require export in usable, non-proprietary formats, including the change log and measurement history. Make subcontractors subject to the same confidentiality, security, and ownership terms.
Make termination practical
Avoid automatic long lock-ins that renew before you can evaluate results. Include a short termination path, a handover period, credential revocation steps, data deletion confirmation, and delivery of exports. Your team should be able to continue operating the site without the vendor’s proprietary dashboard or undocumented process.
How do you compare AI SEO vendors consistently?
Use the same evidence request and interview questions for every candidate. The following axes keep a persuasive presentation from outweighing operational risk.
| Comparison axis | Evidence to request | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Verifiable evidence and references | Named client, URL or reference, baseline, intervention, dates, geography, and outcome definition | Can an independent person reproduce the claim? |
| Alignment with Google guidance | Recommendation register mapped to Search Essentials or documented practice | Can the vendor explain why each change is appropriate? |
| Measurement and attribution | Metric definitions, source systems, date ranges, attribution rules, and reporting cadence | Will the report distinguish visibility from qualified business results? |
| AI quality control | Workflow, source grounding, named reviewers, correction process, byline and disclosure rules | What prevents inaccurate or low-value pages from being published? |
| Data, security, and subprocessors | Data map, retention and deletion terms, access controls, logs, incident process, and change notice | Do the controls apply to the exact deployment you will use? |
| Ownership and portability | Contract language covering content, prompts, dashboards, reports, exports, and credentials | Can you operate and migrate without the vendor? |
| Contract flexibility and remediation | Approval gates, correction times, incident duties, liability, and termination steps | What happens when work is late, harmful, or no longer needed? |
| Plain-language communication | Sample change log, meeting format, escalation path, and explanation of a past mistake | Can your team understand and challenge the work? |
Use a pass, investigate, or reject decision
Pass means the vendor supplies evidence tied to your situation, accepts staged access, explains uncertainty, and agrees to contract protections. Investigate means a claim may be plausible but lacks a reference, reproducible method, or deployment-specific control. Reject means the vendor guarantees outcomes, refuses ownership or data terms, demands unrestricted credentials, or cannot explain its AI review process.

What are the most common ways buyers get burned?
Most losses come from a mismatch between a sales promise and the operating details. Watch for these failure patterns before signing.
Vanity metrics presented as business results
A rise in impressions or a handful of ranking screenshots does not prove more qualified demand or revenue. Require the vendor to connect each claimed improvement to a defined source and attribution rule, and keep business outcomes separate from search visibility.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Case studies without a reproducible trail
A logo, percentage, or before-and-after chart is weak when the site, dates, intervention, and geography are missing. Ask for enough detail to distinguish the vendor’s work from a redesign, seasonality, a product launch, or a search-algorithm change.
Bulk pages produced to meet a quota
Page counts can encourage low-value text, factual errors, and cannibalization. Tie deliverables to user needs, source quality, review completion, and correction performance instead of a raw number of AI drafts.
Unlogged technical changes
Unrecorded redirects, canonical edits, noindex directives, template changes, or link removals can damage a site and make recovery difficult. No production change should bypass your approval and the shared log.
Data sent to an undisclosed provider
A vendor may chain several models, retrieval services, or subcontractors behind one interface. If the contract does not identify those parties and their retention and training terms, you cannot assess where confidential material goes.
Dependence on a proprietary dashboard
If reports, prompts, historical data, or recommendations cannot be exported, leaving becomes expensive and continuity suffers. Make portability a deliverable, not a goodwill promise.

What should you do during the first 30 days?
A short, controlled start reveals more than a long presentation. Use a sequence that protects the site while testing the working relationship.
- Days 1–5: send the same evidence request to each vendor and verify references independently.
- Days 6–10: review a read-only audit, map recommendations to Google guidance, and challenge any guarantee or special-access claim.
- Days 11–15: run a sample content or technical task using your real brief; inspect source use, factual accuracy, reviewer notes, and correction handling.
- Days 16–20: complete the data map, identify subprocessors, and agree on named accounts, least-privilege roles, logging, and incident contacts.
- Days 21–25: negotiate deliverables, metric definitions, approval gates, ownership, export formats, and termination language.
- Days 26–30: approve a limited pilot with rollback criteria. Expand access only after the vendor meets the evidence and quality requirements.
Keep an internal decision record containing the claims made, evidence accepted, open uncertainties, approvals, and rejected requests. That record prevents a later handoff from turning assumptions into “facts.”
How do you respond when a vendor’s work causes a problem?
Pause further deployment, preserve logs and reports, and determine the blast radius before attempting a broad fix. A documented response protects both the site and your ability to enforce the contract.
- Revoke or reduce the vendor’s access if unauthorized changes or data exposure are possible.
- Capture affected URLs, timestamps, versions, prompts, outputs, approvals, and monitoring data.
- Restore the last known-good configuration where you have a tested rollback; avoid overwriting evidence.
- Notify the contractual incident contact and require a written root-cause analysis and correction plan.
- Check Search Console, analytics, logs, indexing directives, redirects, and key conversion paths after remediation.
- Decide whether the vendor can continue under a remediation plan or whether the termination and handover clauses should be used.
Do not accept “the algorithm changed” as a complete explanation. The vendor should show what it changed, when, why, what evidence it used, and how it will prevent recurrence.
What is the buyer’s final decision rule?
Choose the vendor that can explain its work, limits, evidence, data flows, and exit process in plain language—not the vendor with the most dramatic promise. Proceed only when site-specific references, a reproducible measurement plan, human quality control, least-privilege access, deployment-specific security evidence, ownership protections, and a practical termination path are written down. If any of those essentials remains a sales assertion, keep the engagement at read-only discovery or walk away.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should a small business hire an AI SEO vendor or do SEO in-house?
Use the same due-diligence standard either way. A small team may outsource execution while keeping approval of publishing, technical changes, accounts, and measurement; a limited pilot can reveal whether the vendor adds expertise that the team cannot efficiently build.
How often should an AI SEO vendor report results?
Set the cadence around the work and the decision you need to make, rather than a fixed promise of weekly growth. Require a consistent time range, source systems, annotations for deployments, and a review meeting when a metric moves materially.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can a vendor use my confidential documents to improve its model?
Only if your contract and supplier data map expressly permit that use. Require a field-level description of what is sent, whether it is retained or used for training, how deletion is verified, and which subprocessors receive it.
What evidence should I keep if I switch SEO agencies?
Keep the original audits, recommendation register, deployment and rollback logs, content briefs and source files, prompts, structured-data definitions, dashboards, historical exports, access inventory, and unresolved-risk list. These records let a successor distinguish inherited conditions from new changes.
How can I check an AI citation claim myself?
Ask for the exact query set, engine, country, language, dates, device assumptions, and citation definition, then repeat the checks under the same conditions. Record the result over time because a single observed answer is not a stable performance guarantee.
