Traditional scanners and AI security agents find different classes of risk. Static analysis (SAST) checks source code before it runs, dynamic analysis (DAST) attacks a running application, and dependency scanners compare packages with databases of known vulnerabilities. An AI-assisted agent can add context-driven exploration: it may follow a user journey, combine several requests, and test business logic or a chained attack path that a fixed rule set never reaches. The practical answer is not to choose one. Keep repeatable SAST, DAST, and dependency checks, then add an appropriately scoped agent and human-led testing where application context or assurance requirements demand it.

What is the short answer: what does each approach catch?

Each method observes a different layer of the system. A scanner applies rules or known signatures at a defined observation point; an agent tries to understand the application well enough to plan and adapt a sequence of tests. Their coverage overlaps, but neither category proves that every reachable exploit has been found.

Approach Primary observation point Especially useful for Typical blind spot
Static application security testing (SAST) Source code before compilation or execution Known coding errors, insecure data flows, and coding-policy violations Runtime behavior, deployment configuration, and business workflows that are not evident in code alone
Dynamic application security testing (DAST) A running, integrated web application or API Observable runtime behavior, input handling, authentication and authorization behavior, and user-privilege issues Unreachable paths, untested roles, and logic that requires a particular business context
Dependency scanning Package manifests, lock files, and dependency metadata Published vulnerabilities in third-party libraries and components Application-specific logic and vulnerabilities that have no package identifier
AI-assisted security agent Depending on the product, source, documentation, architecture context, and a running application or API Context-aware exploration, business-logic flaws, and multi-step attack chains Anything outside its configured scope, credentials, supported checks, or implementation; it is not automatically a dependency scanner or a substitute for independent testing

The term “AI security agent” is broad. The capabilities below use AWS Security Agent documentation as a concrete example, not as a universal specification or an independently measured benchmark.

What does SAST catch that a traditional scanner can see before execution?

SAST analyzes source code before compilation, so it can flag a defect while a developer is still changing the affected file. Microsoft’s Security Development Lifecycle describes this use as finding known issues and checking adherence to coding standards, often inside developer workflows and build automation.

Common SAST findings

  • Unsafe use of APIs or functions that match a known vulnerability pattern.
  • Data flows in which untrusted input reaches a sensitive operation without the expected validation or encoding.
  • Hard-coded secrets or insecure configuration patterns when the rule set is designed to detect them.
  • Violations of an organization’s secure-coding policy, even when no exploit has been demonstrated.

SAST is valuable because it scales across every commit and does not need a deployed environment. Its evidence is the code path and the rule that matched it. That evidence still requires triage: a path can be unreachable in production, sanitized by a framework, or intentionally permitted. Conversely, a clean SAST result says little about a workflow that only becomes risky when several components execute together.

What does DAST catch in a running application?

DAST sends requests to an executing, integrated program and observes the responses and resulting behavior. Microsoft describes it as using attacks or tools that approximate attacker behavior, including checks of application behavior and user-privilege issues.

Runtime issues DAST can expose

  • Unexpected responses to malformed, boundary, or hostile input.
  • Authentication and session behavior that can be observed through the deployed interface.
  • Authorization failures that appear when one user or role requests another user’s data or action.
  • Security problems caused by integration, middleware, routing, or deployment settings that static code review cannot reproduce.

DAST sees only what its crawler and test configuration can reach. A scanner that has one low-privilege account cannot assess an administrator-only workflow. An API endpoint hidden behind an undocumented route, a feature requiring a particular sequence of business events, or a flow that needs a second service to return a specific state may never be exercised. Adding authenticated roles and representative data improves coverage, but does not turn automated probing into proof of completeness.

Why is dependency scanning a separate job?

Dependency scanning compares the application’s declared components with records of published vulnerabilities. It answers a different question from application-logic testing: “Does this package and version have a known issue?” rather than “Can this application’s workflow be abused?”

AWS’s Security Agent best-practices guidance explicitly says that the agent does not perform traditional dependency or manifest scanning and points to Amazon Inspector for published vulnerabilities in third-party dependencies. The separation matters even when an agent can read source code: package identity, version resolution, transitive dependencies, and vulnerability advisories require a dedicated inventory and matching process.

What a dependency scanner contributes

  • Coverage of direct and transitive packages recorded in manifests or lock files.
  • Version-specific matches to published vulnerability advisories.
  • Upgrade or replacement information tied to the affected component.
  • A repeatable inventory that can be checked on every build.

A dependency result is not an application exploit demonstration. A vulnerable library may be unused, protected by a configuration, or reachable only through an unexposed feature; the reverse is also true, because custom business logic can be exploitable even when every package is current.

What can an AI-assisted security agent add?

An agent can use application context to choose what to try next instead of executing only a fixed sequence. AWS describes its Security Agent as combining application context with multi-step scenarios to discover and validate vulnerabilities in web applications and APIs. Its guide says the service may combine SAST, DAST, and penetration-testing techniques.

Context and multi-step exploration

Context can include the application’s documentation, architecture information, source, and an accessible running target, depending on the product and configuration. With that information, an agent may map an account or transaction flow, form a hypothesis about a trust boundary, send a sequence of requests, and alter the next request in response to what the application returns. This is the part of the comparison that is genuinely different from a single-pass pattern check.

For example, a suspected authorization weakness may require creating an object as one user, changing an identifier, and then requesting it as another user. A fixed scanner might test a few identifiers; a context-aware agent may infer the object relationship and pursue the sequence. That is a capability description, not a guaranteed detection rate.

Risk categories documented by AWS

AWS lists the following supported categories for its Security Agent. Actual coverage depends on product configuration, application scope, authentication, and test setup:

  • Code and command injection
  • Cross-site scripting (XSS)
  • Insecure direct object reference (IDOR)
  • JWT weaknesses
  • Path traversal
  • Privilege escalation
  • Server-side request forgery (SSRF)
  • Server-side template injection (SSTI)
  • SQL injection
  • XML external entity (XXE) issues

A listed category means the implementation has checks intended to address it; it does not mean every instance in that category will be found. Credentials, reachable routes, input formats, rate limits, feature flags, and the agent’s interpretation of the application all affect the result.

How the example agent validates a finding

AWS describes exploit attempts and reproducible attack paths as part of validating findings. A useful report should therefore contain more than a label: reviewers should be able to see the relevant reasoning, payloads, requests, responses, and the verification steps that connect the input to the observed impact. Reproduction evidence lets an engineer distinguish an exploitable defect from a suspicious response or an environmental artifact.

How do traditional scanners and agents differ in validation and repeatability?

Rule-based checks are designed for consistent recurring coverage, although configuration, tool versions, and application state still matter. AWS explicitly warns that its AI-driven runs are non-deterministic: “Because AWS Security Agent is powered by AI agents, runs are non-deterministic: testing the same unchanged application twice can surface different findings.”

What non-determinism means operationally

  • A second run can explore a different route, stop at a different point, or report a different subset of findings.
  • A missing finding is not evidence that the underlying issue is absent.
  • A newly reported finding is not self-validating; inspect the reasoning and reproduction evidence.
  • Trend dashboards should record scope, credentials, configuration, and run date so changes are not confused with agent variation.

Non-determinism is not automatically a defect. Adaptive exploration can reach paths that a fixed test misses. It does mean that an organization should not use an agent as the sole source of a binary “secure” or “insecure” decision, nor compare two runs as if they were a controlled benchmark.

Which vulnerabilities are most likely to remain outside either approach?

Every method has a boundary. A scanner cannot establish all business context or prove that every reachable exploit path was tested. An agent has a wider reasoning loop, but its behavior is still bounded by the context, credentials, scope, supported checks, and implementation supplied to it.

Business rules and chained attacks

OWASP distinguishes authorized penetration testing from automated known-pattern checks by emphasizing business-logic flaws and chained attacks. Examples include bypassing a sequence of approvals, abusing a refund or credit rule, or combining two individually low-impact actions into a privilege increase. Automation can assist with these cases, but a human must understand whether the observed behavior violates the organization’s intended rule.

Unavailable roles, data, and integrations

An account with no access to a privileged workflow cannot test that workflow. Likewise, a staging environment with mocked payment, messaging, identity, or partner services may behave differently from production. Scope and environment constraints should be recorded with the result rather than hidden behind a general “passed” label.

AI-specific application surfaces

When the target application itself contains AI agents, AWS’s Well-Architected Agentic AI Lens recommends considering tool invocation, multi-agent delegation, memory handling, and prompt-injection chains. It also recommends isolated test environments, scoped credentials, logged activity, and controls that contain impact. Those recommendations apply to assessing an agentic application; they are not a claim that every conventional AI security agent tests all of those surfaces.

What should a layered application-security program look like?

Use the least expensive, most repeatable control for issues it can observe, then add context-aware testing and independent assessment for what automation cannot establish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Inventory code and components. Run SAST in developer workflows and build automation. Run dependency analysis against manifests and lock files so known vulnerable packages are handled separately from application-logic findings.
  2. Test the deployed interface. Configure DAST against an authorized test environment. Include the routes, APIs, roles, and representative states that the application actually exposes.
  3. Define an agent’s mission. Provide the application context, exact URL or API scope, test accounts, role boundaries, and exclusions. State which actions could be destructive and prohibit them or route them to a safe fixture.
  4. Run context-aware scenarios. Ask the agent to investigate workflows and hypotheses that benefit from multi-step exploration, such as object ownership, privilege transitions, or a sequence crossing service boundaries.
  5. Review every material result. Examine the agent’s reasoning, payloads, requests, responses, and verification. Reproduce the issue with an independent request or test where possible, then assign severity based on actual impact.
  6. Retest after remediation. Keep the original scope and credentials when you need a meaningful before-and-after comparison. Because agent runs can vary, use the evidence from the original finding and a focused regression check rather than relying on a single clean rerun.
  7. Obtain independent assurance when required. OWASP recommends written authorization, scope, and rules of engagement for penetration testing. Google’s supplier-testing guidance is one context-specific example that requires manual methods and says automated scanning is not an adequate replacement for its required penetration-test report; that requirement should not be generalized to every organization or law.

How should teams authorize and contain agent testing?

Authorization is a prerequisite, not paperwork to complete after the run. OWASP defines penetration testing as an authorized simulated attack and emphasizes written scope and rules of engagement. The same discipline is appropriate for an AI agent that can generate and send attack traffic.

Pre-run controls

  • Write down the target domains, API routes, environments, dates, and permitted test types.
  • Use role-specific credentials with the minimum access needed for the scenario; do not hand an exploratory agent broad production privileges.
  • Exclude destructive actions such as deletion, irreversible purchases, or real-world notifications unless they are represented by safe test fixtures.
  • Isolate the environment when testing tool use, memory, delegation, or prompt-injection behavior in an agentic application.
  • Enable activity logging so requests, tool calls, and state changes can be reconstructed.

During and after the run

  • Watch rate limits, error budgets, queues, and downstream services for unintended impact.
  • Stop the run if it leaves the written scope or begins an excluded action.
  • Preserve the exact scope, credentials class, configuration, timestamps, and evidence with each finding.
  • Have an engineer or security tester assess exploitability and business impact before creating a remediation priority.

Can an AI agent replace a traditional scanner or a penetration test?

No. AWS says its Security Agent should complement existing application-security tools and does not replace a professional penetration-testing service. It also does not perform traditional dependency or manifest scanning, so removing those controls would create an avoidable gap.

A professional assessment adds an independent judgment about business rules, chained attacks, environmental assumptions, and the significance of an observed behavior. Some contracts or assurance programs require a report produced through specified manual methods. The Google supplier example illustrates that point in one narrow context; it is not a universal compliance rule.

How should a team choose what to run first?

Start with the question the control can answer, not with the label “AI.”

If you need to know… Start with… Then consider…
Whether a new code change introduces a known insecure pattern SAST in the developer and build workflow A focused review of the affected path and its runtime behavior
Whether deployed endpoints mishandle hostile input or user privileges DAST with authenticated roles and representative routes Agent-led multi-step scenarios for workflows the crawler cannot infer reliably
Whether a third-party component has a published vulnerability Dependency and manifest scanning Runtime confirmation of whether the vulnerable component and code path are reachable
Whether a business process can be abused through several actions A scoped agent scenario and human-led review Authorized penetration testing for independent assurance or formal reporting
Whether an AI-enabled application mishandles tools, memory, delegation, or prompt input Isolated, logged tests designed for those surfaces Broader application testing and manual assessment of business impact

This ordering prevents an agent from becoming an expensive replacement for a control that already answers a narrower question reliably. It also keeps a clean dependency inventory and repeatable code checks in place while using adaptive testing where context provides additional value.

What should a good finding report contain?

Regardless of the producer, a finding is actionable only when an engineer can understand and verify it. Require the following fields for scanner and agent results:

  • Affected asset, route, file, package, or workflow.
  • Observation point: source, deployed request, dependency record, or multi-step scenario.
  • Exact scope, role, credentials class, environment, and timestamp.
  • Input or payload, relevant responses, and the state transitions that matter.
  • Impact explanation tied to confidentiality, integrity, availability, or business rules.
  • Evidence of reproduction and any assumptions that could not be tested.
  • Remediation guidance and a regression test that can be rerun after the fix.

For an agent result, add the agent’s reasoning and verification steps. For a dependency result, add the resolved package and version rather than treating a broad component name as sufficient. For a SAST result, include the data-flow path and the rule so the developer can decide whether the issue is real, unreachable, or intentionally handled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI security agent test an application without login credentials?

It can probe only the unauthenticated surface available to it. Testing account-specific, administrative, or cross-user behavior requires appropriately scoped credentials and role setup; otherwise the report should identify those areas as untested rather than secure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can two scans of the same application disagree?

Rule-based checks can vary with configuration and application state, while an AI-driven run may choose a different exploration path. AWS specifically documents non-deterministic agent runs, so compare the underlying requests and evidence instead of treating a single run as a definitive presence-or-absence test.

Does a clean dependency report mean the application is safe?

No. Dependency analysis addresses published issues in package versions, not custom authorization rules, unsafe workflows, or deployment behavior. Application testing and code analysis are still needed for those categories.

What is the safest environment for testing an AI-enabled application?

Use an isolated environment with test data, least-privilege credentials, activity logging, and explicit exclusions for destructive actions. This is especially important when evaluating tool invocation, delegated agents, memory, or prompt-injection chains.

When is human penetration testing still required?

It remains appropriate when you need independent judgment about business-logic abuse, chained attacks, or a formal report with specified methods. Requirements vary by contract and program; the Google supplier guidance is a specific example, not a rule for every organization.
