Static application security testing (SAST) and AI security agents find different kinds of evidence. SAST reads source code or compiled representations without running the application, so it can flag risky patterns and data flows early and repeatedly. An AI security agent may combine code analysis with dynamic requests, tool use, workflow reasoning, and targeted exploitation; that can expose runtime behavior, business-logic flaws, multi-step chains, and risks in applications that use large language models (LLMs). Neither label guarantees a fixed feature set. The dependable approach is to use SAST as a deterministic baseline, add dynamic and agentic testing for behavior and context, and have people validate important findings and fixes.

What does SAST actually examine?

SAST analyzes an application’s source code, bytecode, or intermediate representations without executing the application. OWASP describes it as an early-lifecycle technique that can use rules, patterns, models, and data-flow analysis to identify potentially unsafe code paths. Because it does not need a running deployment, it can run on a developer branch or pull request and can inspect paths that ordinary tests never reach. See the OWASP Developer Guide and OWASP DevSecOps SAST guidance.

Code-level issue classes

  • Injection paths: tainted input reaching SQL, command, template, or other interpreters, when the analyzer supports the language and framework.
  • Unsafe output handling: data that can reach HTML, JavaScript, redirects, or other sinks without the required encoding or validation.
  • Insecure deserialization: use of dangerous serializers or untrusted serialized data.
  • Path traversal: file paths derived from input without adequate canonicalization or access controls.
  • Secrets and credentials: hard-coded keys, tokens, passwords, or certificates detectable by the configured rules.
  • Weak cryptography: obsolete algorithms, short keys, predictable randomness, or unsafe cryptographic usage that the rule set recognizes.

A SAST alert is a potential vulnerability, not proof that an attacker can exploit the application. False positives occur when a tool cannot understand sanitization or a trust boundary; false negatives occur when a path is hidden by reflection, generated code, dynamic configuration, unsupported framework behavior, or incomplete cross-file analysis. A finding therefore needs code review and, where practical, a runtime test.

What can an AI security agent catch that SAST cannot?

“AI security agent” is a broad description rather than a standard specification. Depending on its implementation, an agent can reason over code and deployment context, call scanners or browsers, send carefully chosen requests, maintain state between steps, and attempt to validate a suspected weakness. AWS describes its Security Agent as combining SAST, dynamic application security testing (DAST), and penetration-testing methods, including targeted exploitation; that is the vendor’s stated scope, not independent comparative evidence. Its guidance is at AWS Security Agent Best Practices and AWS Security Agent guidance.

Runtime-dependent behavior

An agent can exercise an endpoint with a real session, observe status codes and responses, and continue through a sequence of actions. That helps investigate authorization failures that appear only after a particular login, tenant switch, or object-ID change; unsafe redirects; server-side request forgery that depends on network reachability; and errors caused by deployment configuration. The agent still needs an environment, credentials, and routes it is permitted to use. If it cannot reach a feature or lacks the required identity, it cannot establish coverage.

Business logic and multi-step chains

Many serious defects are valid requests used in an invalid sequence rather than a single suspicious line of code. Examples include applying a discount repeatedly, approving one’s own transaction, changing an account identifier after a permission check, or combining two low-severity weaknesses to cross a trust boundary. An agent that preserves state and reasons about application goals can propose and test such sequences. A conventional SAST rule generally reports the individual code patterns but does not know whether the complete workflow produces an unauthorized outcome.

LLM and tool-use risks

When an application includes an LLM, an agentic assessment can test categories that do not exist in ordinary business code. The OWASP AI/LLM testing guidance covers prompt injection, sensitive-information disclosure, unsafe output handling, excessive agency, and failures in retrieval or tool permissions; see OWASP AI/LLM Application Security Testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Prompt injection: malicious instructions in a user message or retrieved document alter the model’s intended behavior.
  • Sensitive-information disclosure: prompts, model context, retrieval results, or responses reveal secrets or another user’s data.
  • Unsafe output handling: model text is trusted as HTML, SQL, shell input, a support decision, or another executable instruction without a safe boundary.
  • Excessive agency: the model can send messages, modify records, spend money, or call tools beyond what the user and system policy authorize.
  • Retrieval and tool-permission failures: a search index, plugin, or API returns data or performs an action for an identity that should not have access.

Code analysis may identify that a model can call a tool, but only an execution-based test can show how an adversarial prompt, document, identity, and tool response interact. An agent will not automatically test every AI risk; supported model providers, connectors, policies, and test data determine its reach.

How do their evidence and coverage differ?

The most useful comparison is about evidence, not the marketing label. SAST starts with program representations; agentic testing starts with an executable target and context. The same product may contain both modes, so ask which mode produced each finding.

Decision axis SAST AI security agent
Evidence source Source, bytecode, or intermediate representation; no application execution. May combine code, live responses, logs, identities, tools, and workflow state.
Typical issue focus Unsafe patterns, taint/data flow, secrets, cryptographic misuse, and known coding weaknesses. Runtime behavior, business logic, exploit chains, authorization outcomes, and—in configured LLM systems—prompt, retrieval, and tool-use risks.
Coverage dependency Language, framework, parser, generated-code handling, and rule/data-flow support. Reachable routes, credentials, environment fidelity, permitted tools, model/connectors, and agent configuration.
Finding strength Usually a potential issue that requires triage and confirmation. May include a reproducible behavior or attempted exploit, but claims still need review and safe reproduction.
Speed and repeatability Fast, deterministic scans suited to every change and pull request. Can be slower, stateful, and less deterministic; repeatability depends on prompts, data, model behavior, and environment.
Operational risk Primarily code and repository access. Additional risk from active requests, credentials, memory, external data, and actions taken through tools.

No controlled head-to-head effectiveness statistic establishes that one method is universally better. Coverage and evidence quality must be measured for your own languages, architecture, workflows, and threat model.

Which findings are more likely to come from each method?

Use the following as a planning guide, not a guarantee. A capable implementation can blur the boundaries, and unsupported frameworks or unreachable features can make either column empty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question you need answered More naturally addressed by SAST More naturally addressed by agentic or dynamic testing
Does untrusted input reach a dangerous sink? Yes, through supported taint and data-flow analysis. Can attempt the request and observe whether the sink is exploitable.
Is a secret committed in the repository? Yes, with secret-detection rules. Usually not the primary method unless it inspects source or deployment configuration.
Can a user read another tenant’s record? May flag missing checks or suspicious data flow, but often lacks tenant state. Can test two identities and manipulate identifiers through the workflow.
Can a checkout sequence be abused? Can identify relevant functions but not normally the complete business sequence. Can preserve state, repeat steps, and test a compound outcome.
Does a retrieved document override an assistant’s policy? May find weak prompt construction or missing output checks in code. Can inject content into retrieval and observe model and tool behavior.
Does a fix remove the vulnerable path? Can confirm that the original pattern is no longer present. Can rerun the exploit or workflow to confirm the behavior is no longer reachable.

What does SAST miss, and what can an agent still miss?

Common SAST blind spots

  • Values assembled at runtime from configuration, feature flags, or service responses that are unavailable to the analyzer.
  • Reflection, metaprogramming, generated clients, and framework conventions that defeat call-graph or taint modeling.
  • Authorization and business rules whose correctness depends on a user’s role, tenant, sequence, or transaction state.
  • Deployment issues such as exposed services, cloud permissions, network paths, and unsafe production settings.
  • Model behavior, retrieval poisoning, and tool authorization that emerge only when an LLM processes adversarial context.

Common agentic blind spots

  • Unreachable code, dormant branches, and rare error paths that a test plan never invokes.
  • Languages, frameworks, protocols, or model connectors outside the agent’s supported adapters.
  • Defects requiring a production-only dependency, long time window, unusual data volume, or an identity the test cannot obtain.
  • Non-deterministic model responses that make a one-time pass look safer than repeated adversarial testing would show.
  • Subtle coding flaws that do not produce an observable effect in the supplied environment.

These limitations are why OWASP’s Web Security Testing Guide recommends layering automated scans with targeted manual testing and code review for business logic, authorization bypass, and context-specific risks. Its introduction is available at OWASP WSTG.

How should a team combine SAST and AI security agents?

A practical program uses deterministic checks on every change, then spends active-testing effort where context and impact justify it. Keep the environments and permissions separate so an exploratory agent cannot damage production data.

  1. Define the inventory and threat model. List repositories, services, public and internal routes, identities, data stores, LLM prompts, retrieval indexes, and tools. Mark which assets and test accounts are authorized for active testing.
  2. Run SAST at the earliest useful point. Add the scanner to pull requests and the build pipeline. Configure the languages, generated-code exclusions, dependency boundaries, and severity policy; retain results so new findings are distinguishable from accepted legacy risk.
  3. Triage potential findings. A developer or security reviewer should trace the reported path, determine whether a sanitizer or authorization check exists, and record why a finding is fixed, accepted, or suppressed. Do not treat an alert count as a vulnerability count.
  4. Prepare a safe target for active testing. Use a staging or isolated environment with synthetic or minimized data, short-lived credentials, rate limits, and resettable state. Document the routes, identities, tools, and actions that are in scope.
  5. Give the agent narrow capabilities. Apply least privilege to API keys and tool permissions, validate untrusted inputs, isolate memory, cap retries and tool chains, and require a human approval step for high-impact actions. The OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet provides these control principles.
  6. Test workflows and AI-specific abuse cases. Select scenarios such as cross-tenant access, privilege changes, payment or approval sequences, prompt injection through retrieval, disclosure attempts, unsafe output consumption, and unauthorized tool calls. Record the identity, prompt or request, state transitions, response, and side effects.
  7. Reproduce material claims. Confirm a suspected exploit with a controlled request or a focused test. If the behavior cannot be reproduced, retain the uncertainty and investigate environment, data, and permissions rather than silently upgrading the severity.
  8. Fix and verify in both layers. Re-run SAST to ensure the code pattern is gone or deliberately mitigated, then rerun the relevant dynamic or agent test to prove the workflow and side effect are blocked. Add a regression test for every confirmed defect.
  9. Review after material changes. Repeat adversarial tests when prompts, models, retrieval sources, tool schemas, permissions, authentication, or major business workflows change. Keep a human accountable for release decisions.

How should you compare an AI security agent before adoption?

Ask for concrete boundaries and evidence rather than accepting “AI-powered” as a capability. A short proof of concept on representative code and workflows is more informative than a generic feature list.

Evaluation question What to verify
What can it read? Supported languages, repositories, compiled artifacts, infrastructure definitions, prompts, retrieval stores, logs, and generated code.
What can it execute? HTTP requests, browser actions, authenticated API calls, code scanners, cloud APIs, model conversations, and custom tools.
How is access constrained? Per-tool identities, read/write separation, network allow-lists, data masking, isolated memory, approval gates, retry limits, and complete audit logs.
What evidence is retained? Source locations, request and response traces, prompts, tool arguments, identity, timestamps, screenshots or logs, and a reproducible test case.
How repeatable are results? Whether prompts, model versions, seeds, test data, and environment snapshots can be pinned or replayed.
How are fixes checked? Whether the product can rerun the original scenario and integrate with SAST, unit, integration, and regression tests.
What is outside scope? Unsupported frameworks, encrypted traffic it cannot inspect, production-only dependencies, unavailable identities, model providers, and actions it is forbidden to perform.

What examples illustrate the two approaches?

OWASP AppSec Agent is presented by OWASP as an open-source TypeScript library and command-line interface for security code review, pull-request analysis, STRIDE threat modeling, fix generation, and test verification. Those are described capabilities of that project, not a guarantee that every deployment covers every language or runtime scenario; check its current documentation and configuration before relying on a feature.

AWS documents its Security Agent as a vendor example that combines SAST, DAST, and penetration-testing methods and attempts targeted exploitation. AWS also describes it as supplementary to existing security tooling and says it does not replace a professional penetration test; treat that statement as the vendor’s guidance rather than an independent performance result. The best comparison is still a scoped trial against your own code, identities, workflows, and LLM integrations.

How do you validate findings and fixes?

Start by separating a reported condition from a confirmed impact. For a SAST alert, inspect the complete source and data flow, identify sanitization and authorization boundaries, and write a focused test if exploitation is plausible. For an agent report, preserve the exact request or prompt sequence, identity, state, tool calls, and response so another reviewer can replay it in the authorized environment.

Classify the result as confirmed, not reproducible, benign, or needing more access. When a fix is proposed by an AI assistant, have a person review the change for new paths and unintended behavior. OWASP SAMM recommends human review of AI-assisted triage and fixes and verification by rerunning tools and relevant tests; see OWASP SAMM AI-assisted development. Close the loop with a regression test and an owner for any accepted residual risk.

What is the practical decision rule?

  • Choose SAST first when you need fast, repeatable feedback on every code change, secret detection, and data-flow coverage across code that is difficult to exercise.
  • Add agentic or dynamic testing when the risk depends on runtime configuration, authenticated state, business sequences, external services, or LLM prompts, retrieval, and tools.
  • Use both for high-impact systems: SAST narrows the code-level search space, while active testing demonstrates whether important behavior is reachable and exploitable.
  • Keep manual review and professional penetration testing for business logic, architecture, authorization, and scenarios that automated tools cannot reliably model.

OWASP’s Developer Guide states, “SAST does not replace manual review or other security testing techniques.” That principle applies equally when an AI agent is added: automation expands evidence, but accountable humans decide what a finding means and whether a remediation is safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI security agent replace a SAST scanner?

Usually not. An agent may call a static analyzer, but its exploratory behavior is not a substitute for a deterministic scan on every code change, especially for dormant paths and repository-wide secret or data-flow checks.

Do AI security agents test prompt injection automatically?

Only when the implementation includes an LLM test plan, access to the relevant prompts or retrieval system, and permission to exercise the connected tools. Confirm that the product records the injected context, model response, and any side effect instead of assuming the label includes this coverage.

Should active agent testing run against production?

Use an isolated, authorized environment whenever possible. Production testing can expose personal data or trigger irreversible actions, so any exception needs tightly scoped identities, rate limits, monitoring, approvals, and a documented rollback plan.

Why can a SAST finding remain after a fix?

The rule may not recognize the new sanitizer, the vulnerable path may exist in generated or duplicated code, or the issue may be a broader design flaw than the reported line. Review the full flow, update the rule configuration if appropriate, and verify behavior with a focused test rather than deleting the alert blindly.
