To check whether your website appears in AI search, test a fixed set of real questions on each platform, verify whether your pages can be crawled and indexed, and record mentions and citations over time. For Google, use Search Console’s generative-AI reporting and controls when available; for ChatGPT, check access for OAI-SearchBot. A result from one prompt is only a snapshot—not proof of stable visibility.
What does it mean for a website to show up in AI search?
AI search visibility is not one single status. A page may be accessible to a crawler but not indexed, indexed but not eligible for a particular result, or eligible without being selected for an answer. Even when a site is surfaced, the platform may mention its name, cite a specific page, or provide a direct link; those are different signals and should be recorded separately.
A useful AEO/GEO checklist—answer engine optimization or generative engine optimization—is therefore a way to check eligibility, observe results, and track changes. It is not a separate certification or a guarantee that a platform will show a page. Google says its generative AI features rely on core Search systems and that ordinary SEO best practices still apply.
How should I test whether my site appears?
Use the same set of genuine reader questions repeatedly, and save enough context to tell one result from another. This makes your observations comparable without mistaking a changing answer for a permanent ranking.

1. Build a fixed question set
Include questions that reflect different ways people might discover or evaluate your site:
- Brand queries: questions that name your site or business.
- Category questions: questions about the topic or service your site covers, without naming your brand.
- Comparison questions: questions that ask how options differ.
- Problem-led questions: questions that describe a reader’s need and ask for a solution.
Use wording a person would actually ask. Keep each prompt unchanged for scheduled repeat checks; you can also test variants separately, but label them as different prompts.
2. Run each prompt on each platform
For every run, record whether the answer names your brand, cites one of your URLs, links directly to your site, or omits it. Save the answer text or a reliable record of it, along with the date, country, device, exact prompt, and platform. A mention without a citation is not the same evidence as a linked source.

AI answers can change, so treat each run as a snapshot. Compare repeated observations rather than drawing a conclusion from one answer. If a result changes, the log helps establish whether the prompt, location, device, date, or platform also changed.

4. Keep evidence categories separate
Use precise labels in your notes: crawled means a crawler could access a page; indexed means it is included in a search index; eligible means it meets relevant technical conditions for possible inclusion; shown means the page or site appeared in an answer; and cited means the answer identified a source URL. Evidence of an earlier stage does not prove a later one.
How do I check visibility in ChatGPT?
Check whether your site allows OAI-SearchBot and whether OpenAI’s published searchbot IP addresses can reach it. OpenAI’s Publishers and Developers FAQ says, “Any public website can appear in ChatGPT search,” but it also makes clear that placement is not guaranteed.
Check crawler access
- Review your site’s
robots.txtfor rules that block OAI-SearchBot. - Check CDN and firewall rules for restrictions that could prevent the crawler or traffic from OpenAI’s published searchbot IP addresses from reaching your pages.
- Review server logs for requests from OAI-SearchBot and investigate whether requests are blocked or failing.
- Repeat your fixed prompt checks and log whether ChatGPT names your site, cites a page, links to it, or omits it.
Passing the access check establishes a condition for eligibility, not a promise that a page will be included in a summary or snippet. A lack of observed citations in a limited prompt set likewise does not establish that the site can never appear.
How can I check Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Start with the same crawlability, indexing, and content checks you would use for Google Search. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems, so meeting technical requirements does not guarantee selection for an AI feature.

Verify pages and inclusion settings
- Confirm that important URLs can be crawled and indexed, and are eligible to appear with a search snippet.
- In Search Console, review the Search generative AI control. Google says it covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative features in Discover.
- Check whether the site is included. Google says inclusion is the default; using the exclusion control prevents links and content from appearing in those features.
- If you change the control, allow time for the change to take effect. Google says changes generally take days to propagate.
Use Search Console reporting
When the Generative AI performance report is available for your property, use it to review impressions and page trends over time. Compare those trends with your prompt log: Search Console reporting and manual answer checks are different kinds of evidence, so one should not be treated as a replacement for the other.
Google says, “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search.” It also advises readers to be wary of third-party tools that promise ranking success or claim to use internal Google metrics. A vendor’s recommendations may help organize work, but they are not proof of Google ranking factors.
How do I check whether Perplexity cites my website?
Run your fixed questions on Perplexity and record whether its answer names your site, cites one of your pages, links to it, or leaves it out. Do not assume that ChatGPT’s crawler settings or Google’s Search Console controls apply to Perplexity.

The available provider-specific guidance does not establish a Perplexity crawler rule, ranking factor, or publisher analytics report. That means a prompt log can document what you observed, but it cannot by itself establish how Perplexity crawls, ranks, or selects sources. Keep those conclusions limited to the results you actually recorded.

What technical and editorial checks matter across platforms?
Sound site fundamentals support discoverability, but they are not a shortcut to an AI citation. Google’s guidance says ordinary SEO practices continue to apply to its generative features.
- Crawl access: check for crawler blocks in robots rules, CDN settings, firewalls, or server behavior.
- Indexability: confirm that important pages are not excluded from indexing and can qualify for ordinary search presentation.
- Site structure: use clear architecture, descriptive titles and headings, and internal links that make relevant pages easy to find.
- Accessible, useful content: publish distinct, people-first answers that directly address the questions your intended readers ask.
- Structured data: use it where appropriate for normal rich-result eligibility, not as a special requirement for generative AI appearance.
Google does not require llms.txt, special AI files, special markup, or Markdown for appearance in its generative AI search features. Do not treat adding such a file or markup as a prerequisite for Google visibility.
What should an AI visibility log include?
A compact log makes results interpretable and repeatable. Capture the observation itself, not just a yes-or-no score.

How should I interpret the results?
Read the evidence in layers. Crawl access and indexability help establish whether a page can be considered; platform reports and repeated prompt checks show different aspects of observed performance. Neither an eligible page nor one successful answer proves that your site will be selected consistently.

- Blocked or inaccessible page: investigate crawler, CDN, firewall, or server restrictions before interpreting missing answers.
- Accessible but not indexed: resolve indexing eligibility before treating the page as a plausible search result.
- Indexed or eligible, but not observed: continue scheduled checks and avoid presenting a small prompt sample as proof of absence.
- Mentioned without a source link: record a brand mention, not a page citation.
- Repeated direct citations: report the exact prompts and conditions under which you observed them; do not generalize beyond that evidence.
For reporting, state the platform, date range, country, device, prompt set, and what counted as a mention or citation. This makes the limits of the observation visible and avoids collapsing technical eligibility, impressions, links, and answer mentions into one score.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a robots.txt check prove that ChatGPT can access my pages?
No. It only checks one possible control point. CDN or firewall rules and server responses can still affect access, which is why OpenAI’s guidance also points site owners to access from its published searchbot IP addresses and server-log checks.
Can I use Google Search Console to see every time my page is cited by an AI answer?
The Generative AI performance report provides Google reporting when it is available for a property, including impressions and page trends. It is not a complete manual record of individual answers across every prompt, so keep a separate log for those checks.
Should I add llms.txt to improve my Google AI visibility?
Google says that special AI text files are not required to appear in Google Search’s generative AI features. Its guidance does not establish such a file as a visibility boost.
Why might my site be absent from one answer but appear in another?
An answer is a snapshot, and the wording of the question and the conditions of the run can differ. Record the exact prompt, platform, date, country, and device before comparing results.
