AI-powered scams are not a new category of crime so much as a force multiplier for familiar fraud. Generative tools can write convincing messages, translate them, create realistic faces and documents, clone voices, produce deepfake video, build fraudulent websites and run chat conversations that steer victims to malicious links. That combination lets criminals target more people, tailor pressure to each victim and remove warning signs such as poor grammar or an obviously fake profile.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recorded 22,364 AI-related complaints and $893,346,472 in adjusted losses in 2025. Those are reported amounts, not a census of all fraud. The practical response is not to become an expert at spotting pixels or audio artifacts: pause, verify the request through a trusted channel, and never treat a familiar voice, face, caller ID or video as proof of identity.

What is the AI-powered scam revolution?

It is the industrialization of social engineering. A criminal can use generative systems to produce the words, images, audio, video and web infrastructure needed for an impersonation scheme, then repeat the process at a scale that was previously expensive or slow. The underlying crimes remain phishing, extortion, impersonation, investment fraud, account takeover and identity fraud; AI makes them faster, more personalized and harder to recognize.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) said in 2025 that “AI-enabled synthetic content is becoming increasingly difficult to detect and easier to make, which allows criminal actors to potentially conduct successful fraud schemes against individuals, businesses, and financial institutions.” Synthetic content itself is not automatically illegal. The criminal conduct is the deception, theft, extortion or other unlawful act carried out with it.

How large is the problem?

Several official datasets show why security professionals are treating the trend as a financial and trust problem, while also showing why the figures must be read carefully.

Source and period Reported complaints or losses How to interpret it
FBI IC3, 2025 22,364 AI-related complaints; $893,346,472 in adjusted losses AI-related reports received by IC3; adjusted reported losses, not all fraud
FBI IC3, 2024 reporting year 859,532 suspected internet-crime complaints; losses exceeding $16 billion Broad internet-crime totals, including many cases that did not involve AI
Federal Trade Commission, 2024 More than $12.5 billion in reported fraud losses Consumer fraud reports; underreporting means the true total may be higher
Federal Trade Commission, 2024 $5.7 billion lost to investment scams; $2.95 billion to imposter scams Loss categories across reported fraud, not an AI-only count
Federal Trade Commission, 2023–2024 38% of people reporting fraud said they lost money in 2024, compared with 27% in 2023 Share of people who reported fraud and said they lost money
F-Secure, 2025 analysis sample 89% of documented AI-enhanced scam cases used AI for content generation A documented-case sample, not a population estimate of all scams

These numbers measure reports, not every incident. Victims may not recognize a scam, may be embarrassed to report it, or may report to a bank or platform rather than a government agency. Even with those limits, the combination of rising losses and cheaper synthetic content explains the alarm.

What does AI change for a scammer?

Scale and speed

Text generators can produce hundreds of official-sounding emails, text messages or chat replies quickly. Translation allows the same operation to address people in multiple languages, while automated chat interfaces can keep a target engaged without a human operator typing every response.

Personalization

Public information can be turned into a tailored script. A fraudster may reference a person’s job, relatives, travel, employer or interests, making a request feel as though it came from someone who knows the target. Personalization also helps criminals choose the most persuasive emotional trigger for each person.

Believability

Correct grammar, natural-sounding speech, realistic profile images and convincing documents remove clues that once exposed low-effort fraud. A polished message is therefore weak evidence of legitimacy; the request and the verification path matter more.

Multimodal impersonation

A single operation can combine a text message, a convincing profile, a phone call and a video “proof” of identity. Each element appears to confirm the others, even though all were produced by the same criminal.

Fraud infrastructure

AI can help build fake investment sites, identity documents and chatbots that direct victims to malicious links. This lets a campaign look like a complete service rather than a single suspicious message.

Which scam patterns are being enhanced by AI?

The table below compares the main patterns by the synthetic media used, the relationship or authority being impersonated, the requested action and the pressure placed on the target.

Pattern AI modality Impersonated relationship or authority Typical requested action or payment rail Pressure and verification opportunity
Executive or vendor impersonation AI-written email, cloned voice Company executive, supplier or finance contact Wire transfer or credentials Urgency and secrecy; verify with a known colleague or established vendor contact
Family-emergency or grandparent scam Cloned voice Relative claiming to be in danger Immediate payment Fear and time pressure; call the relative or another family member using a trusted number
Romance and confidence scam AI-generated profile images and scripts Romantic partner or trusted online contact Money or sensitive information Long emotional conversations; insist on independent identity and financial checks
Investment scam Deepfake public figure, synthetic testimonials, AI-built cryptocurrency site Celebrity, expert or successful investor Deposits or cryptocurrency transfers Promises of returns and social proof; verify the firm and regulator independently
Phishing and account takeover Personalized text or email, fake login page, automated chat Bank, employer, delivery service or online platform Password, one-time code or account access Urgent warning or expiring account; open the official app or type the known website yourself
Identity and verification fraud Deepfake media and generated identity documents Applicant or account holder Access to a financial or other protected account Targets authentication controls; organizations need layered checks rather than one visual test
Charity, disaster and celebrity scams Synthetic images or video Cause, celebrity or product endorser Donation or purchase Urgency and emotional appeal; locate the organization independently before paying

How can I tell if a scam call is AI-generated?

You usually cannot determine that reliably from audio alone. Treat the call as suspicious when it combines an urgent demand with secrecy, an unusual payment method or a request for credentials, even if the voice sounds exactly right.

  • Pause the conversation. Say you will call back, then end the call. A demand that you stay on the line is a pressure tactic.
  • Use a separate channel. Call the person, company or institution using a number already saved in your contacts, a statement or an official website you navigate to yourself. Do not use a number supplied in the call or message.
  • Ask a private verification question. Use information that is not public and do not reveal the answer first. This is only an additional check, not proof by itself.
  • Reject high-risk requests until confirmed. Do not send money, credentials, one-time codes or identity documents while the request is unverified.
  • Look for the transaction mismatch. A familiar caller asking for an unfamiliar payment rail, a new account number or gift-card-style payment is a stronger warning than an imperfect voice.

Caller ID, a familiar greeting and natural pauses are clues, not authentication. Criminals can combine spoofed caller ID with a cloned voice, so the reliable test is an independently initiated callback or confirmation.

Can scammers clone a family member’s voice?

Yes. Synthetic-voice tools can imitate a relative well enough to support a family-emergency scam. The caller may claim an accident, arrest or medical crisis and demand immediate payment, exploiting fear before you have time to check the story.

Agree on a family verification routine before an emergency occurs. For example, decide that any urgent money request must be confirmed through a second relative and a known phone number. A prearranged phrase can add another check, but never rely on a phrase that has been shared publicly or sent in the same conversation.

Why do AI scams sound and look so convincing?

They remove several independent warning signs at once. A polished message avoids spelling mistakes, a realistic profile image supports the claimed identity, a cloned voice supplies emotional immediacy, and a deepfake video appears to provide visual proof. When those elements arrive together, people may mistake consistency for authenticity.

AI also lets criminals maintain a conversation. A chatbot can answer objections, mirror the target’s language and escalate pressure gradually. In romance scams, that can sustain a believable relationship; in phishing, it can guide a victim through a fake support process until the victim provides a one-time code.

The strongest defense is procedural rather than visual: separate the request from the identity claim, and verify the request through a channel the claimant cannot control.

Are deepfake investment videos real?

A video can be genuine media, manipulated media or a fully synthetic performance; viewing it does not establish that the investment exists. Deepfake public figures, fabricated testimonials and AI-built cryptocurrency sites are used to make high returns appear endorsed and ordinary.

  1. Stop before depositing money or connecting a wallet.
  2. Find the investment firm through an independently located regulator or corporate record, not through the video’s link.
  3. Check whether the claimed person or organization has publicly acknowledged the promotion through a separate, established channel.
  4. Be skeptical of guaranteed returns, countdowns, “exclusive” access and requests to keep the opportunity secret.
  5. Assume that testimonials and screenshots can be synthetic; evaluate custody of funds, withdrawal rules and legal registration instead.

Investment scams were the FTC’s largest reported loss category in 2024 at $5.7 billion. That figure covers investment fraud generally, not only deepfakes, but it shows why a persuasive video should never substitute for independent due diligence.

What should I do if I clicked a suspicious link?

Act quickly, but do not panic. The right response depends on what happened after the click.

  1. Stop interacting with the page. Close it and do not enter credentials, payment details or one-time codes. If a download started, cancel it.
  2. Disconnect when appropriate. If software installed, the device shows unusual behavior or you suspect remote access, disconnect it from networks and seek trusted technical help. Do not destroy the device or erase logs before preserving useful evidence.
  3. Change exposed credentials from a clean device. Start with the affected account, then any account that reused the same password. Enable multifactor authentication and sign out other sessions where the service provides that control.
  4. Contact the bank or payment provider immediately. Ask whether a transfer, card payment or account change can be stopped or reversed. Speed matters most when money or payment credentials were involved.
  5. Preserve evidence. Keep the message, full email headers when available, phone numbers, wallet addresses, URLs, screenshots, timestamps and transaction records.
  6. Report the incident. Notify the platform used by the scammer and report it to the appropriate law-enforcement or consumer-protection authority. FBI Director Kash Patel said, “Reporting is one of the first and most important steps in fighting crime.”

How should businesses and financial institutions respond?

Organizations should assume that one channel can be forged and design approvals around independent confirmation. A finance employee should verify a changed payment instruction with a known contact; a help desk should not reset an account solely because a caller supplies convincing personal details; and high-risk identity decisions should combine document, device, behavioral and human review.

FinCEN Director Andrea Gacki said in 2024: “Vigilance by financial institutions to the use of deepfakes, and reporting of related suspicious activity, will help safeguard the U.S. financial system and protect innocent Americans from the abuse of these tools.” FinCEN has reported increasing suspicious-activity reporting involving deepfake media, particularly fraudulent identity documents used to bypass verification.

Staff training should rehearse the moments when pressure is highest: an executive demanding secrecy, a supplier changing bank details, or a customer insisting that a voice or video proves identity. Written escalation rules and separation of duties make it possible to pause without relying on an employee’s ability to spot a deepfake.

What are the limits of AI detection?

Detection tools can be useful signals, but they are not a universal authenticity test. The FBI’s warning is about synthetic content becoming easier to make and harder to detect; it does not promise that a detector can identify every fake. Compression, background noise, translation and new generation tools can all affect performance.

Do not reverse the burden of proof: a detector saying “likely real” does not authorize a wire transfer, and a detector saying “likely fake” is not the only reason to report suspected fraud. Verify the person and the requested action independently, preserve the original material and let the relevant platform, bank or authority investigate.

What is the safest everyday rule?

When a message creates urgency, fear or secrecy, slow down and change channels. Verify using contact information you already trust, refuse to disclose credentials or one-time codes, and treat every voice, face, document and video as evidence to check rather than proof to accept. If money or access may have been exposed, contact the provider quickly and report what happened while records are still available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the safest way to verify a message that claims to be from my bank?

Open the bank’s official app by using the device’s normal icon or type the address you already know, then check alerts and contact options there. Do not reply to the message, tap its link or call its embedded number, even if the message includes accurate account details.

Can a short social-media clip be enough to clone someone’s voice?

A criminal may use publicly available audio as training material, so you should not assume that a person’s posted video makes future calls trustworthy. Families and teams should rely on a callback routine or another private verification method instead of trying to judge audio quality.

Should I warn other people after my account is taken over?

Yes. From a clean device, tell contacts through a channel the attacker cannot control that messages from the compromised account may be fraudulent. Ask them not to send money, codes or documents and to report suspicious messages to the platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is making a deepfake illegal even when nobody loses money?

Synthetic media is not inherently illegal. Liability depends on the conduct and applicable law, such as fraud, extortion, identity theft, harassment, unlawful impersonation or misuse of personal data; preserve evidence and seek advice from the relevant authority when harm is threatened.
