Yes—AI can make a romance scam look and sound remarkably real, but it cannot prove that the person behind the account is who they claim to be. Criminals now use generated photos, polished messages, translation, cloned or altered voices, deepfake video, and forged documents across the same scheme. The safest response is not to “spot the bot” from one awkward sentence. Instead, verify identity through independent channels, treat money or intimate-image requests as a stop signal, and act quickly if you have already shared anything.
What is AI romance fraud?
AI romance fraud is a confidence scam in which a criminal uses artificial-intelligence tools to create or operate a fake romantic identity. The account may begin on a dating app, social network, game community, or messaging service. The objective can be a direct payment, cryptocurrency, account credentials, intimate images, or a combination of emotional and financial control.
AI is used throughout the attack chain rather than at one isolated step. A criminal can generate a plausible profile image, write tailored opening messages, translate conversations, maintain several chats at once, produce a synthetic voice, alter a video call, and create a fake invoice or investment statement. That makes the fraud cheaper to run and easier to personalize, but it does not make the identity genuine.
Not every romance scam uses AI, and a complaint does not always establish whether AI was involved. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reported 22,364 complaints containing AI-related information in 2025, with adjusted losses above $893,346,472. Its 2025 report also recorded more than $19 million in confidence/romance losses with a likely AI nexus. Those are reported figures, not a count of every victim or every dollar lost; shame and uncertainty keep many incidents out of official statistics.

Why are AI romance scams increasing?
Generative tools remove much of the time, language skill, and production cost that once limited a scammer. INTERPOL says large language models, AI-generated media, cryptocurrency, and fraud-as-a-service models are helping organized groups run more professional campaigns at relatively little cost. It has described AI-enhanced fraud as 4.5 times more profitable than traditional methods, a comparison that reflects the organization’s assessment rather than a universal result for every case.
The FBI’s warning is straightforward: criminals exploit generative AI “to commit fraud on a larger scale which increases the believability of their schemes.” A convincing message does not need to be perfect; it only needs to keep a target engaged long enough for trust, secrecy, and urgency to take hold.
Social media is a major entry point. The Federal Trade Commission said nearly 60% of people who reported losing money to a romance scam in 2025 said the contact started on social media. Dating apps remain important, but a scam can move between a public profile, a private messenger, an email account, and a supposed trading site without the victim realizing that the same operator controls all of them.

How does an AI romance scam work?
Most cases follow a recognizable progression. The stages overlap, and a criminal may skip directly to a payment request, but understanding the sequence helps you interrupt it early.
1. Targeting and identity creation
The criminal chooses a target and assembles a persona: name, age, occupation, location, interests, relationship history, and an explanation for why meeting is difficult. Profile photographs may be stolen, AI-generated, or a mixture of genuine and synthetic images. INTERPOL has reported AI-generated personas and deepfake images in romance-based fraud.

2. Trust-building with generated content
AI writing tools can produce affectionate, grammatically polished messages that mirror your interests and emotional tone. Translation lets a scammer sustain conversations in languages they do not speak. A team can also use scripts so that different operators sound consistent while managing many targets.
3. Isolation and escalation
The conversation often moves off the original platform. The person may say the app is inconvenient, claim that the relationship is private, or encourage you not to discuss it with friends. Once communication is isolated, the criminal introduces a crisis, a business opportunity, or a request for more personal material.
4. Monetization or coercion
Common demands include wire transfers, cryptocurrency, gift cards, login credentials, “taxes” or “fees” to release supposed profits, and travel or medical expenses. In a sextortion variant, the person first requests intimate images and then threatens to send them to family, colleagues, or followers unless you pay.
5. Scaling and repetition
AI lets a group produce new images, scripts, translations, and responses quickly. When one account is blocked, another can replace it. The same operator may run romance, investment, and sextortion conversations at the same time, changing the story to match each target.
What is romance baiting?
Romance baiting combines emotional attachment with an investment pitch. The scammer presents a trading method, cryptocurrency opportunity, or private platform as a shared plan for your future. Early screenshots may show fabricated profits, and a small withdrawal can be allowed to create confidence before larger deposits are demanded.

INTERPOL describes this hybrid pattern as increasingly common and notes that sextortion is also being integrated into romance and investment scams. The emotional relationship is not a side detail: it is used to make a financial decision feel like proof of loyalty. A legitimate romantic partner will not require you to send money, buy cryptocurrency, or keep an investment account secret in order to demonstrate commitment.

The table below separates the technology from the asset the criminal wants. A convincing medium is not evidence of a trustworthy identity.
| Attack stage | AI capability | Typical target | Best immediate response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profile creation | Generated or altered photos; synthetic biography | Attention and contact details | Pause; check whether images and biographical claims can be independently verified |
| Conversation | Text generation, emotional tailoring, translation | Trust, phone number, email, personal history | Keep communication on-platform while verifying the person through a separate route |
| Live contact | Voice cloning, face filters, deepfake or altered video | Credibility and reassurance | Do not treat a call as proof; arrange independent, real-world verification |
| Investment pitch | Generated charts, statements, documents, and support messages | Wire transfer, cryptocurrency, credentials | Stop; do not use links supplied by the contact; consult an independent financial professional or trusted person |
| Sextortion | Edited intimate media, scripted threats, automated follow-up | Money, additional images, account access | Do not pay or send more material; preserve evidence and report |
How can I tell if the person I met online is real?
No single test can certify an online identity, especially when AI can imitate a face or voice. Use several independent checks and judge the person’s behavior over time.
Check the identity outside the relationship
- Search the person’s name, workplace, claimed city, and public history using information you find independently rather than links they provide.
- Use reverse-image search as a lead, not a verdict. A clean result does not prove the image is original, and a stolen photograph may appear in many legitimate places.
- Look for contradictions in dates, time zones, employment, family details, and travel stories. A polished biography can still be internally inconsistent.
- Ask for a normal, unscripted interaction that fits the person’s claimed life, then verify the result through a separate channel. Do not rely on a single video call.
Watch the pace and emotional pattern
- Messages that arrive constantly, instantly, and with unusually intense affection can indicate scripting or automation.
- Rapid declarations of love, pressure to define the relationship, or demands for secrecy are manipulation signals, not proof of commitment.
- Moving from a moderated dating service to private messaging is not automatically malicious, but a refusal to remain on-platform while trust is established deserves caution.
Test the money story
- Any request tied to a crisis—travel, customs, medical care, a legal problem, or a lost wallet—should be treated as unverified.
- A trading account showing profits is only a display controlled by the site. It is not evidence that funds exist or can be withdrawn.
- Cryptocurrency transfers, gift cards, and wire payments are difficult to reverse. Never send them to prove love or unlock supposed earnings.
Protect intimate material
Do not send intimate images or videos to someone whose real-world identity you have not independently established. AI can alter ordinary photographs, and an authentic image can still be used in a coercive scheme. If threats begin, stop negotiating and preserve the messages.
Can scammers clone a voice or fake a video call?
Yes. AI can generate or modify speech and video well enough to make a short call persuasive. A familiar voice or a moving face therefore proves only that media was delivered to you—not who controlled the account, camera, or phone.

Use a challenge that cannot be prepared from your existing conversations, and verify the answer through a contact method you already had before the relationship began. More importantly, do not let a convincing call override a request for money, secrecy, cryptocurrency, credentials, or intimate material. Identity verification should be independent of the person’s own accounts and links.
What should I do when I notice a warning sign?
Interruption is more important than winning an argument with the scammer. Take these steps in order:
- Pause contact and payments. Do not send another transfer, image, code, password, or identification document. Avoid clicking new links from the account.
- Preserve evidence. Save messages, profile URLs, usernames, phone numbers, email headers, payment receipts, wallet addresses, screenshots, and the dates and times of contact. Do not edit the originals.
- Tell a trusted person. Isolation is part of the attack. A friend or family member can review the story without the emotional pressure created by the scammer.
- Secure accounts. Change reused passwords, enable multi-factor authentication, review active sessions, and contact your email or mobile provider if access codes or identity documents were exposed.
- Contact the payment provider immediately. Call your bank, card issuer, wire service, or cryptocurrency exchange using a number from its official website or statement. Ask what recall, freeze, chargeback, or account-protection steps are still possible.
- Report the account and the crime. Use the dating or social platform’s reporting process. In the United States, submit a report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), as the FBI directs suspected victims to do, and report to the relevant national service if you are elsewhere.
- Handle sextortion safely. Do not pay, send more images, or threaten the perpetrator. Keep evidence, report the account, and seek help from law enforcement and a trusted person.
Fast action cannot guarantee recovery, particularly after cryptocurrency is transferred, but delay removes options. Reporting also helps investigators connect accounts and payment routes that appear unrelated to one victim.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much money is being lost?
Reported losses show the scale, not the full prevalence. The FBI San Francisco Division said its territory recorded more than $40 million in romance-scam losses in 2025, compared with nearly $22 million in 2024. The national IC3 figure for confidence/romance losses with a likely AI nexus exceeded $19 million in 2025. These categories overlap imperfectly: some cases have no established AI link, while other AI-related complaints may involve a different fraud type.

McAfee’s 2025 survey of 1,000 U.S. adults found that 26% said they or someone they knew had been approached by an AI chatbot posing as a real person. Seventy-six percent believed scammers could use AI to fake romantic relationships and manipulate victims financially or emotionally. Survey responses measure perception and reported experience, not a law-enforcement case count.

How can families and platforms reduce the risk?
Prevention works best before a crisis creates urgency. Agree with relatives or friends that a request for money from an online partner triggers a call to a second person before any payment. Keep social profiles from exposing enough information to answer security questions or construct a convincing biography. Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication on email, social, and financial accounts.
Platforms can help by detecting reused images, coordinated scripts, suspicious payment requests, and rapid account creation, but users should not assume automated moderation catches every synthetic persona. A person who reports a scam should include the account identifiers and preserve the evidence before blocking, because blocking can remove access to the conversation history.
What are the key decisions when evaluating an online relationship?
- Identity: Can you verify the person through independent, real-world evidence?
- Behavior: Do they respect boundaries, or do they create urgency and secrecy?
- Money: Have they asked for a transfer, cryptocurrency, gift card, credentials, or a fee?
- Media: Are you treating a photo, voice, or video as proof it was created by the claimed person?
- Support: Have you shown the conversation to someone outside the relationship?
If the answers are uncertain and money or intimate material is involved, stop and verify before continuing. The goal is not to prove that every affectionate message was generated by AI. It is to prevent an unverified identity from gaining control over your money, accounts, or private images.

Can a reverse-image search tell me whether a dating profile is AI-generated?
It can reveal that a photo was copied from another account or website, but it cannot certify that an image is genuine when no match appears. Treat the result as one clue and combine it with independent identity checks and the person’s willingness to verify themselves.
Should I confront an online partner I suspect is a scammer?
Confrontation is optional and can prompt threats, deletion of evidence, or a more convincing story. Save the records, stop sharing information, report the account, and let your bank or investigators guide the next step.
What if the scammer has my passport, driver’s-license image, or other identity document?
Contact the issuing authority and financial institutions promptly, explain that the document was exposed to a suspected fraudster, and ask about replacement, monitoring, or an alert. Change passwords and review account activity because the document may be paired with information gathered during the relationship.
Can I recover cryptocurrency sent to a romance scammer?
Recovery is difficult because many transfers are irreversible, but immediate contact with the exchange or wallet provider may preserve limited options. Give investigators the transaction hash or wallet address, destination details, and timestamps, and beware of anyone who promises recovery for an upfront fee.
