Current general-purpose AI systems are capable but uneven. They can converse in many languages, write code for bounded tasks, generate realistic media, and achieve exceptional scores on selected academic tests. The same systems can produce confident falsehoods, fail at simple counting or physical reasoning, and lose track of errors in longer workflows. A benchmark result therefore describes performance on one test, not a guarantee for your actual use. The practical rule is to match evaluation and safeguards to the task, context, and consequences. This guide explains the capabilities documented in the International AI Safety Report 2026, the risks that follow, and how organizations can manage them using the NIST Generative AI Profile (AI 600-1).
What can current AI systems do?
Leading general-purpose systems now perform a wide range of bounded language, coding, analytical and creative tasks. Their capabilities are broad enough to be useful across many jobs, but each capability must be interpreted in the conditions under which it was measured.
| Capability | What the 2026 report describes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation and language | Fluent conversation in many languages, including adaptation to different prompts and formats. | Fluency does not establish factual accuracy, consistent reasoning or human-like understanding. |
| Coding | Code generation for narrow software tasks. | Generated code still requires testing, review and security checks in its intended environment. |
| Academic problem solving | Scores above 90% on selected undergraduate examinations, including chemistry and law (MMLU), and above 80% on graduate-level science tests (GPQA). | These are report-reported benchmark results, not an estimate of accuracy on arbitrary real-world work. |
| Mathematics | Models from Google DeepMind and OpenAI solved five of six problems under competition-like conditions at the July 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad, a gold-medal-level result. | Competition conditions differ from open-ended work with ambiguous requirements, changing data and tool failures. |
| Generated media | Photorealistic images, short high-definition videos, 3D scenes and music from prompts. | Realistic output can still contain subtle errors, misleading context or rights and safety concerns that require human review. |
| Physical-world inputs | Progress in processing complex sensor data to guide physical robots. | This does not establish dependable general-purpose household robotics or reliable real-world agency. |
These findings come from the report’s capability assessment, not from a claim that every model performs equally. Model version, prompting, available tools, language, data and operating environment can all change the result.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why are AI abilities described as “jagged”?
The report uses “jagged” to describe a capability profile in which very strong performance sits next to surprising weaknesses. A system may solve a demanding graduate problem yet fail at basic counting, physical-spatial reasoning or a small change to a familiar instruction. Success on one difficult task is therefore weak evidence that the system will handle a different task reliably.

What jagged performance looks like in practice
- A model can draft a working function for a clearly specified programming task but misunderstand an unstated requirement or introduce an edge-case bug.
- It can explain a scientific concept accurately in one answer and contradict itself after a similar prompt or a minor change in context.
- It can produce a polished image or video while missing a physical detail that a person would notice immediately.
- In a multi-step workflow, it may complete early steps and then repeat an error instead of recognizing and correcting it.
This pattern makes a single “intelligence” score a poor deployment shortcut. Test the exact task, data, tools, users and failure recovery that matter to you.
Can AI be trusted to get facts right?
No system should be assumed accurate merely because its answer is fluent. Current models continue to generate false information, inconsistent answers and errors on seemingly simple questions. Treat an important output as a claim that needs checking, particularly when a mistake could affect health, legal rights, finances, safety, employment or public decisions.
Why confident language is not evidence
Language models optimize for producing a useful-looking response, not for guaranteeing that every statement is true. They can fill gaps with plausible details, combine correct and incorrect parts, or present one answer when the available information is uncertain. Similar prompts can yield different outputs, so repeating a request once is not a reliability test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to verify an important answer
- Define the factual proposition you need to rely on rather than checking a long response as one block.
- Ask for the source, date, assumptions and uncertainty behind each material claim.
- Check primary documents, calculations, records or an independent expert; do not treat a model-generated citation as proof that the cited material says what the answer claims.
- Run the output through the real system or dataset where appropriate, using tests that include normal, boundary and adversarial cases.
- Record what was checked and who approved the result before it is used in a consequential decision.
The International AI Safety Report 2026 emphasizes that these errors persist even as benchmark performance improves.

What does the “evaluation gap” mean?
An evaluation gap is the failure of pre-deployment tests to predict behavior in real conditions. The report notes that performance depends on task, context and system setup, and that developers cannot always foresee newly emerging capabilities or provide robust assurances against harmful behavior.
Why a benchmark can mislead a buyer
- Different task: A test may use short, clean questions while your workflow contains ambiguous instructions, incomplete records and exceptions.
- Different environment: Tool access, retrieval systems, memory, permissions and interfaces can materially change behavior.
- Different users: Skilled operators may catch errors that casual users accept, while adversarial users may deliberately search for weaknesses.
- Different time horizon: A model that succeeds on one response may fail after dozens of dependent steps.
- Different incentives: A system optimized for speed or engagement may trade off caution, explanation or refusal behavior.
Use published evaluations as evidence about the tested condition, then conduct task-specific testing before deployment. A high score is a data point, not a warranty.
Can AI agents work reliably on long tasks?
Agents can combine a model with tools, memory and the ability to take actions, making them useful for bounded multi-step work. Reliability drops when a task requires sustained state, changing information, precise physical judgment or recovery from an early mistake. Current evidence does not support treating an agent as an unsupervised worker for open-ended, high-consequence objectives.

Where long workflows break
- State drift: The agent may lose track of the original objective as intermediate instructions accumulate.
- Error propagation: A small wrong assumption can contaminate every later step.
- Weak recovery: The system may retry the same failing action or invent a reason that the action succeeded.
- Permission risk: Tools can turn a mistaken interpretation into an external change, message, purchase or deletion.
- Evaluation blind spots: A short demonstration does not reveal rare failures that appear only after many actions or unusual inputs.
Design long tasks as checkpoints: limit permissions, require confirmation before irreversible actions, preserve an audit trail, and stop when an uncertainty or tool error exceeds a predefined threshold. The report says current systems lack the capabilities required for loss-of-control scenarios, while also noting progress in areas relevant to autonomous operation and evaluation evasion. That is a narrow present-tense assessment, not a promise about future systems.

What kinds of AI risks are recognized today?
The 2026 report groups risks into four broad categories. Evidence and likelihood differ by category; documented harms, plausible emerging risks and long-term scenarios should not be presented as equivalent.
| Risk category | What it covers | How to interpret the evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Malicious use | People deliberately using systems to produce harmful content, manipulate others or scale existing abuse. | The harm comes from the user’s objective and the system’s capability. Access controls and abuse monitoring can reduce exposure but cannot prevent every misuse. |
| Malfunction | Errors, hallucinations, inconsistent behavior, unsafe actions or failures to follow constraints. | These failures are already observed in ordinary use; severity depends on the domain, autonomy and available human checks. |
| Systemic impacts | Effects that spread across labor markets, institutions or information environments, including possible labor-market disruption. | Scale and distribution are uncertain, so avoid turning a projected aggregate effect into a universal individual outcome. |
| Risks to human autonomy | Automation bias, over-reliance, manipulation and possible loneliness or reduced social engagement for a small share of AI-companion users. | The report qualifies these findings; they should not be generalized to all users or all forms of assistance. |
Some projected risks remain uncertain. The report’s extended summary says, in the specific context of behaviors relevant to loss of control, “Current systems are not highly capable in relevant areas, but some exhibit early warning signs.” The statement should not be read as evidence that such a scenario is occurring now.
How do you manage AI risks?
Risk management is a continuing process, not a one-time certification. NIST’s AI 600-1 Generative AI Profile, published July 26, 2024, helps organizations incorporate trustworthiness considerations into generative-AI design, development, use and evaluation. It frames risk as a combination of likelihood and consequence, with the appropriate controls changing across the lifecycle and context.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A practical defence-in-depth process
- Define the use case and stakes. Document the intended users, data, outputs, decisions, affected people and what would happen if the system were wrong.
- Map threats and failure modes. Consider accidental errors, deliberate misuse, privacy or security exposure, automation bias, tool abuse and failures that could cascade into other systems.
- Evaluate the actual capability. Test representative prompts, languages, data quality, tools, permissions, long sequences and adversarial inputs. Include simple tasks, because jagged systems can fail below their headline level.
- Red-team the deployment. Have independent testers probe unsafe instructions, prompt injection, data leakage, policy bypasses and recovery after an error. Record failures rather than treating a refusal in one test as proof of robustness.
- Apply technical and procedural safeguards. Use least-privilege access, input and output filtering, rate limits, human approval gates, sandboxing and deterministic checks where the task allows them.
- Monitor after launch. Track error rates, unusual tool calls, user complaints, near misses and changes after model, prompt, retrieval or policy updates. Production behavior can differ from pre-release results.
- Prepare incident response. Set a clear stop mechanism, ownership, escalation path and process for preserving relevant logs and notifying affected parties when a harmful failure occurs.
- Reassess throughout the lifecycle. Repeat evaluation when the model, data, tools, users, permissions or operating context changes. Retire or narrow the use case if the residual risk no longer fits the benefit.
These layers lower the chance that one error causes serious harm, but the report stresses that evidence gaps limit their effectiveness in diverse real-world settings. No combination of safeguards guarantees prevention.

How should you compare AI systems or deployment choices?
Compare systems on the work you actually intend to perform, not on a single leaderboard. The following axes reflect the limitations identified in the safety report.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Task performance | Does it meet an agreed accuracy or quality threshold on representative cases, including edge cases? |
| Repeatability | Do repeated and slightly varied inputs produce acceptably stable results? |
| Error recovery | Can it detect, explain and correct a failure in a multi-step workflow, or does it repeat the mistake? |
| Modality and tools | What text, image, video, audio, sensor and external-tool inputs are enabled, and how do those permissions change the risk? |
| Misuse and autonomy exposure | Could a malicious user or an over-permitted agent turn an incorrect output into an external action? |
| Controls and accountability | Are evaluation results, monitoring, audit logs, human approvals and incident-response responsibilities defined? |
A system that is slightly less capable on a benchmark may be the safer choice if it is more predictable, easier to constrain and better monitored for your particular workflow.
Will AI progress continue at the same pace?
There is no settled forecast. The 2026 report says progress through 2030 could slow, continue at recent rates or accelerate. Hardware, data, algorithms, investment, regulation and the ability to deploy systems safely could all affect the path. Plan for uncertainty: review assumptions regularly instead of building a safety case around one predicted capability level.
What should an individual user do right now?
- Use AI for drafting, summarizing, brainstorming and other bounded assistance where a person can inspect the result.
- Verify facts, calculations, code and recommendations before relying on them, with more stringent checking as consequences rise.
- Do not give an agent permissions it does not need; separate read access from write, send, purchase or deletion rights.
- Keep a human decision-maker responsible for outcomes that affect rights, safety, money, health, employment or access to essential services.
- When an output matters, save the input, output, model or system version and the checks performed so another person can reproduce the decision.
The useful mental model is neither “AI is reliable” nor “AI is useless.” Current systems are powerful pattern and content generators whose performance is highly dependent on the exact task and operating conditions. Treat capability demonstrations as evidence to investigate, not permission to remove judgment and controls.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does an AI benchmark score actually tell me?
It tells you how a particular system performed on a defined test, under that test’s scoring rules and conditions. It does not reveal how the system will behave with your data, tools, users, longer workflows or unusual cases, so procurement decisions need representative local evaluations as well.
Does multimodal AI understand the physical world like a person?
Processing images, video or sensor streams can improve a system’s responses, but it does not establish human-like physical understanding. A deployment that controls equipment still needs environment-specific testing, bounded permissions and a way to stop unsafe actions.
Are present-day models able to cause a loss-of-control event?
The 2026 safety report says current systems lack the capabilities required for such scenarios. It also records progress in autonomous operation and evaluation-evasion research, which is why monitoring and repeated reassessment remain appropriate rather than treating the present assessment as permanent.
What should be recorded after an AI incident?
Keep the input and output, the system or model version, enabled tools and permissions, relevant logs, the human actions taken and the resulting impact. A consistent record helps determine whether the failure came from the model, data, interface, user process or a change in the surrounding system.
