The final render is often the inexpensive part of an AI product video. Runway Dev’s 2026 documentation puts a 10-second, 1080p Product Ad Recipe output at $4.56 in credits, yet estimates that reaching a first usable ad typically costs $200–$500. The difference is the retry loop: discarded generations, corrected prompts, repaired references, and rerun workflow steps.
That $200–$500 figure is Runway’s provider-published estimate, not an industry average. Your actual cost depends on resolution, duration, model, audio and reference inputs, how many attempts reach approval, and whether your provider refunds failed jobs. The practical target is therefore cost per approved asset, not cost per generation.
Why does an AI product video become expensive after a cheap render?
An AI video service charges for generation events, while a marketing team pays for an approved shot. Those are different units. A technically completed clip can still be unusable because a label is misspelled, the product changes shape, a hand clips through the package, or the camera move damages a key brand detail.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Every correction can trigger another full render or restart downstream steps. A workflow that creates a product reference, generates a key frame, animates it, adds audio and exports a master can multiply the nominal render price before anyone approves the result.

“A finished product ad costs a few dollars to generate. Getting to your first one usually costs a great deal more, because the price of a generation is not the price of an approved asset.”
The important distinction is between four outcomes:
- Provider failure: the service cannot complete a job. Some providers refund this automatically.
- Completed but rejected: the service returns a valid file, but it fails your creative or brand check. This usually remains billable.
- Cancelled work: treatment varies by provider and API.
- Duplicate retry: a client times out, retries without an idempotency key, and accidentally starts a second billable job.
A budget can therefore be consumed even when the campaign has no usable video. The approved asset is the only unit that matters to production, so your estimate must include the path to approval.
How should I model the cost of retries?
Use a planning model that separates machine charges from people and waiting time. It is a budgeting framework, not a measured industry benchmark.
Cost of approved asset = (generation charge per attempt × number of attempts) + paid inputs and workflow steps + human review time + queue and coordination overhead
The first term is usually the easiest to calculate. The other terms still matter: a producer may spend more time reviewing ten near-misses than one successful clip, and a queue delay can hold up a launch even when the credit charge is small.

Worked example: Runway Product Ad Recipe
Runway Dev lists 216 credits for the first four seconds at 1080p, followed by 40 credits for every additional second. Credits are priced at $0.01 each in the cited documentation. A 10-second output therefore uses 216 + (6 × 40) = 456 credits, or $4.56.
That is the charge for one finished 10-second output, not the cost of reaching approval. Two complete attempts would be $9.12 in credits; three would be $13.68. These are arithmetic illustrations of the published rate, not a claim about how many attempts a typical project needs. If an early workflow step fails and is refunded, the paid total can be lower; if a clip completes but is rejected for branding, the generation may still count.
Why a small per-second price can still produce a large bill
A pipeline may regenerate the same shot at several resolutions, rerun it after a reference correction, and then repeat the animation after a camera-motion change. Multiplying each attempt by duration hides the operational issue: the expensive event is often restarting a chain, not rendering one more second.
How much does one retry cost on different providers?
There is no universal retry price. Providers meter different resources and define “failure” differently, so compare both the published rate and the refund policy.
| Provider | Published direct-cost rule | Resolution or duration detail | Failed, cancelled or budget-exhausted jobs | Idempotent retry support | Workflow locking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Runway Dev | 216 credits for the first four seconds at 1080p, then 40 credits per additional second; credits are $0.01 each. | Product Ad Recipe example: 10 seconds at 1080p costs $4.56. | Failed workflow steps and downstream steps are refunded, according to Runway’s documentation. | Not stated in the cited provider documentation. | The Product Ad Recipe selects the model for each step before full rendering. |
| Luma Agents | Per-job price is not stated in the cited material. | Not stated in the cited provider documentation. | Synchronous errors are never charged. Documented asynchronous generation_failed errors are refunded; budget_exhausted can be partially charged. |
Not stated in the cited provider documentation. | Not stated in the cited provider documentation. |
| Inworld AI | Billing is per second of finished video. | Resolution and duration limits are not stated in the cited material. | Failed and cancelled jobs are not billed. | An idempotency key lets you retry a timed-out create request without starting or billing a duplicate job. | Not stated in the cited provider documentation. |
| Adobe Firefly Generate Video | 20 credits per second at 540p, 50 credits per second at 720p, and 100 credits per second at 1080p. | Rates vary directly with the selected resolution. | Unsuccessful generations are typically refunded. Adobe notes that a refund can be delayed by up to 24 hours for long video jobs. | Not stated in the cited provider documentation. | Not stated in the cited provider documentation. |
These policies make “cost of a retry” conditional. A failed Inworld job is not billed, while a completed but rejected clip can still consume the per-second charge. A Luma budget-exhaustion response may be partially charged even though the job did not finish. Adobe’s refund may arrive later than the failed-generation event, so an account can temporarily show a higher balance consumption.

Product advertising is failure-sensitive because viewers compare the generated object with a real package, device or bottle. Small visual errors that might be acceptable in a general mood video can invalidate an ad.

Labels and regulated text
Logos, ingredients, dosage statements and legal copy require exact characters and spacing. Generative models can alter a letter between frames or produce a plausible-looking but incorrect word. Treat text as a verification gate rather than trusting a single generation.
Geometry and identity
A bottle may gain a cap, a phone may change its camera layout, or a box may stretch as the camera moves. Reference images help anchor identity, but each additional reference can introduce its own consistency problem and may carry a provider-specific cost.
Hands, reflections and contact
Hands touching a package, liquid pouring from a container and reflective surfaces expose temporal inconsistencies. A clip can look convincing in a still frame and fail when inspected frame by frame, forcing a new motion or composition.
Camera motion and brand details
Fast moves, rotations and shallow depth of field increase the number of frames in which a product must remain stable. The more brand-critical details in motion, the more likely a correction will require rerunning the animation rather than editing a single frame.
What is the cheapest way to make an AI product ad?
No provider is universally cheapest because rates and refunds differ. The lowest-waste approach is to avoid paying for full-resolution motion until the product identity and composition have been approved.
- Prepare isolated references. Use clean product images with consistent angles, transparent or controlled backgrounds where possible, and a separate record of the exact label text. Keep reference filenames and versions stable so a prompt change does not silently swap the source.
- Approve a key frame first. Generate still compositions or the least expensive preview available. Check silhouette, logo placement, colors, package proportions and negative space before introducing camera motion.
- Draft at lower resolution. Use a lower-cost resolution to validate framing and movement. Adobe’s published Generate Video rates are 20 credits per second at 540p, 50 at 720p and 100 at 1080p, so a 540p motion test uses one-fifth as many credits per second as a 1080p test under that schedule.
- Animate only approved compositions. Once the key frame passes review, run the shortest useful motion test. Rejecting a five-second test is cheaper than discovering a composition problem after a long, high-resolution render.
- Lock the workflow. Use a recipe or fixed pipeline that keeps the chosen model, reference assets and prompt versions together. Runway describes its Product Ad Recipe as selecting the right model for each step, so a diffusion model is not being asked to render a label it is poorly suited to reproduce.
- Add expensive finishing steps last. Generate audio, alternate aspect ratios and final exports only after picture approval. If a provider charges separately for those inputs or steps, this prevents them from being repeated for every visual retry.
- Render the delivery master once. Keep the approved intermediate assets so a later caption or audio change does not require regenerating the product motion.
How do I prevent timeout retries from creating duplicate charges?
Use idempotency whenever the API supports it, and persist the request state before retrying. A timeout tells you that the client did not receive a response; it does not prove that the provider failed to create the job.

- Create a unique idempotency key for the intended job, such as a UUID tied to the product, shot and revision.
- Send the same key on every retry of that create request. Do not generate a new key merely because the HTTP request timed out.
- Store the provider request ID, idempotency key, prompt or recipe version, model, resolution, duration and reference-asset hashes.
- After a timeout, query the provider’s job status before submitting a new create request. If the job exists, resume polling it.
- Only issue a new key when you intentionally want a new generation, such as after changing the prompt or reference.
Inworld AI explicitly documents this pattern: an idempotency key allows a timed-out create request to be retried without starting or billing a duplicate job. For providers whose documentation does not state idempotency behavior, implement your own job ledger and require a human or service-level check before creating a second request.

What should a production team measure besides credits?
Credits show direct spend, but they do not explain why a shot consumed them. Track each attempt as a production event.
- Attempt count by cause: separate provider failures, prompt changes, reference changes, motion defects and brand-review rejects.
- Approval stage: record whether the attempt was a key frame, low-resolution motion test, final render or finishing step.
- Resolution and duration: these are direct cost axes for the published schedules above.
- Refund status: mark refunded, pending refund, partially charged and successfully billed jobs.
- Queue and review time: include waiting and human inspection in the project estimate, even when no extra credits are consumed.
- Request identity: retain request IDs and idempotency keys so an invoice can be reconciled with a specific generation.
With this ledger, you can calculate cost per approved shot for your own workflow instead of treating a provider’s single-render price as a forecast.

The API reports an error
Read the provider’s failure code and refund policy before retrying. Runway says failed workflow and downstream steps are refunded; Luma refunds documented generation_failed errors; Inworld does not bill failed or cancelled jobs; Adobe typically refunds unsuccessful generations, sometimes after a delay.
The client timed out with no status
Do not submit a fresh job immediately. Query the original request, reuse the same idempotency key where supported, and reconcile the eventual status and charge.
The account reports budget exhaustion
Pause automatic retries. Luma documents that budget_exhausted can be partially charged, so continuing to resubmit may spend the remaining balance without producing a usable clip.

Provider documentation gives useful pricing and refund rules, but it does not establish an industry-wide retry rate, an average time to approval or a carbon cost per approved product ad. Those figures vary with product complexity, creative standards, model changes and review practices. Treat any universal percentage or “average number of attempts” without a defined dataset as unverified.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a completed clip that my team rejects be refunded?
A completed-but-rejected clip is different from a provider failure. The documented refund policies cover specified errors or unsuccessful jobs; they do not promise refunds simply because a marketing team dislikes a valid output, so budget for creative rejects as billable attempts unless your contract says otherwise.
Should audio be generated at the same time as the product video?
Usually wait until the picture is approved. Audio and other finishing inputs can have provider-specific charges, and staging them prevents every visual retry from creating another sound pass.
What records are most useful when a provider invoice looks wrong?
Keep the request ID, idempotency key, status and error code, model and recipe version, resolution, duration, reference-asset hashes, and the credit balance before and after the job. That evidence lets you distinguish a refunded failure from a completed generation or an accidental duplicate.
How can I set a retry budget before a campaign starts?
Choose a pilot shot, define the maximum number of key-frame, motion-test and final-render attempts you will fund, and multiply each stage by its published rate. Add a separate allowance for review time, then stop or redesign the shot when the pilot shows that the expected cost per approved asset exceeds the campaign value.
