Short answer: You usually cannot prove that a phishing message was made with AI by looking at its grammar, logo, voice, or image. AI-assisted and traditional phishing use the same core trick: impersonating someone trustworthy to make you click, disclose information, open a file, approve a login, or send money. The safest distinction is not “AI or not?” but “Was this request expected, and have I verified it through a separate trusted channel?”

AI can help criminals draft convincing messages, personalize them, and imitate voices or images. That makes some scams harder to recognize, but it does not make every AI-assisted message perfect or every traditional message crude. Use the same disciplined process for both: pause, inspect the request, avoid the supplied links and contact details, verify independently, and report anything suspicious.

What is phishing, and where does AI fit?

Phishing is social engineering: an attacker pretends to be a trustworthy person or organization and uses email, a website, text, voice, or another platform to obtain information or cause an action. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) describes phishing as using email or malicious websites to solicit personal information or induce malware downloads while posing as a legitimate entity. Its categories include spearphishing aimed at a specific person, whaling aimed at senior staff, vishing by voice, and smishing by text. See CISA’s phishing guidance.

“Traditional” phishing is a useful label for campaigns that rely on established techniques without obvious generative-AI assistance: a copied invoice, a fake password-reset page, a mass text about a delivery, or a caller claiming to be from a bank. “AI-powered” phishing means that an attacker used an AI system somewhere in the preparation or delivery process. AI might draft or translate text, tailor a message to public information, generate a fake image, or produce a synthetic voice. The underlying objective and the defensive response remain the same.

AI is therefore a capability layered onto phishing, not a dependable new category with its own visual signature. A human-written scam can be polished, while an AI-assisted one can contain mistakes. Treat the requested action and the surrounding context as stronger evidence than style.

Is AI-powered phishing a separate species of attack?

No. It is better understood as the same social-engineering attack with additional automation or impersonation tools. The FBI documented a U.S. campaign in December 2025 in which malicious messages used AI-generated voice messages to impersonate senior officials. CISA also warns that public tools can mimic a person’s voice or image. Those examples show how AI can increase credibility; they do not establish that every convincing message or call was generated by AI.

The FBI’s alert cautions that “AI-generated content has advanced to the point that it is often difficult to identify.” Possible odd wording, unnatural pauses, or visual defects can still be clues, but their absence proves nothing. A genuine account can be compromised, a real employee can make an unusual request, and a criminal can produce a fluent message without AI.

How do AI-assisted and traditional phishing compare?

Compare campaigns by the behavior they ask you to accept, not by trying to identify the software used to create them.

Dimension Traditional example AI-assisted variation Defensive question
Channel A mass email, SMS, social-media message, or phone call. The same channels, with automatically generated text, translations, voice, or images. Was contact expected on this channel?
Impersonation A copied bank notice, executive request, delivery alert, or support message. A more convincing imitation of a named executive, family member, official, or brand, potentially using a cloned voice or face. Can I confirm the person through a contact route I already trust?
Pressure cue Urgency, fear, authority, curiosity, scarcity, or a promise of a refund. The same emotional pressure, adapted to details about your role, current events, or a previous conversation. Would I still act if the request could wait until verification?
Requested action Click a link, open an attachment, enter a password, disclose personal data, or send money. Those actions plus a request for an MFA code, a remote meeting, a new messaging platform, or a voice-confirmed transfer. What exactly will happen after I click, reply, approve, or pay?
Verification The message tells you to use its link, phone number, or reply address. The synthetic voice or polished wording is used to discourage a second check. Can I contact the organization or person independently, using details found elsewhere?

Authority, urgency, emotion, scarcity, and references to current events are recurring manipulation cues identified by the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). The FBI also warns about impersonation campaigns that try to move conversations to encrypted messaging platforms. Read the NCSC’s spot-a-scam guidance and the FBI’s December 2025 alert.

Which warning signs still matter?

Classic clues remain useful as prompts to slow down, but none is a pass-or-fail test. A scam can contain several clues, only one clue, or no obvious spelling errors at all.

An unexpected request for a high-impact action

Be cautious when an unanticipated message asks for money, credentials, personal information, an MFA code, a payment-card change, a file download, or a link click. The risk rises when the request would be difficult to undo, such as changing payroll details or authorizing a transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A sender identity that is plausible but unconfirmed

Inspect the full email address, phone number, account name, and reply-to address. Look for a look-alike domain, a newly created account, or a number that differs from the person’s usual one. A matching address still does not prove safety: an account may be compromised or a caller ID may be spoofed.

A link or attachment that you did not expect

Do not open an unexpected attachment or sign in through a supplied link merely because the message uses a familiar logo. On a computer, hover over a link without clicking to see its destination; on a phone, press and hold only if your operating system displays the destination safely. If the destination is unfamiliar, misspelled, shortened, or unrelated to the organization, close the message and navigate to the known website yourself.

Pressure to bypass normal process

“Pay now,” “keep this secret,” “your account closes today,” or “do not call me” are attempts to stop verification. A request to move from a normal work channel to a private or encrypted platform deserves a separate confirmation, especially when money or confidential data is involved.

Writing that is either unusually poor or unusually polished

Grammar and spelling are weak indicators. Traditional scams may be carefully edited, and AI-generated content may be difficult to identify. Conversely, an awkward sentence can appear in a legitimate message written quickly or translated by a real person. Use style only as a reason to check, never as proof.

Details that create emotional momentum

Scammers may exploit a family emergency, a current event, a limited-time offer, a security scare, or an apparent instruction from a senior person. Emotional intensity is a reason to pause and verify, not a reason to respond faster.

How can I tell whether a message or call is genuine?

Use this sequence whenever an unexpected contact asks you to act. It works for email, SMS, social media, voice calls, and collaboration tools.

  1. Pause. Do not click, reply, open an attachment, share a code, approve a login, or transfer money while you are still reacting to the message.
  2. Name the requested action. Write down what the sender wants: a password, an MFA code, identity information, a payment, a download, or a move to another platform. Concrete wording makes hidden risk easier to see.
  3. Inspect the identity. Expand the sender details and check the complete address, number, account, and reply route. Treat a plausible name, logo, or caller ID as unverified until you confirm it.
  4. Inspect the destination without visiting it. Check the visible URL or attachment name. Do not use a link, phone number, QR code, or contact button supplied by the suspicious message.
  5. Find a trusted route independently. Type the organization’s address into your browser, use its official app, call a number already stored in your contacts, or speak to the person through the channel you used before. The FBI and NCSC both recommend independent contact rather than relying on details in the message; see FBI guidance on spoofing and phishing.
  6. Ask a precise confirmation question. Confirm the amount, account number, document, deadline, and intended destination. For a work request, use the organization’s normal approval process instead of accepting a one-off exception.
  7. Wait for confirmation before acting. No legitimate emergency should require you to defeat your organization’s controls or reveal a one-time code to another person.
  8. Report the message. Use your employer’s phishing-report button or security team, the service’s abuse-reporting function, or the relevant government reporting route. Reporting can help protect other recipients even when you did not click.

For a family member who suddenly calls from a new number, call the old number or use a previously trusted chat. The FBI suggests agreeing on a secret phrase with family members as an additional check against voice impersonation; it should not replace calling through a known channel.

How do voice, video, and image scams change the check?

A familiar voice or face is no longer sufficient authentication. In its September 2024 Stay Safe Online When Using AI tip sheet, CISA states: “Criminals can make a voice call to mimic a trusted person and steal money or to harass people by posting fake or modified images and videos.” Read the CISA AI safety tip sheet.

During a call, do not disclose a one-time code or authorize a transfer simply because the speaker sounds like a colleague, relative, or official. End the call and dial a known number. If the person claims to be in an emergency, contact another family member or the organization’s published switchboard. A video meeting should receive the same treatment: verify an unusual payment or data request outside the meeting, using a separate channel.

Do not spend your time trying to diagnose compression artifacts, lip-sync errors, or synthetic speech patterns. The FBI’s warning about the difficulty of identifying generated content means that technical inspection is an unreliable substitute for independent confirmation.

What should I do if I clicked, replied, or sent information?

Act quickly, but choose the response that matches what happened. Preserve the message and relevant transaction details for investigators; do not continue the conversation to “test” the sender.

If you clicked a link or opened a file

  • Disconnect the device from the network if it is behaving unusually, then contact your organization’s IT or security team.
  • Run the security checks approved for your device. Do not install a scanner or remote-support tool offered by the message.
  • From a different, trusted device if possible, change passwords for accounts that may have been exposed and sign out other sessions.

If you entered a password or MFA code

  • Change the password immediately through the official site or app, and change it anywhere else you reused it.
  • Review active sessions, recovery addresses, forwarding rules, and recent sign-ins; remove anything you do not recognize.
  • Tell your security team or service provider that a credential and possibly an MFA code were disclosed. Do not approve unexpected follow-up prompts.

If you sent money or changed payment details

  • Call the bank, card issuer, payroll team, or payment service through a number you already know. Ask whether the transaction can be stopped or recalled.
  • Notify the intended recipient through an independent route, because an attacker may be impersonating both sides of the conversation.
  • Report the incident promptly. In the United States, the FBI accepts cybercrime reports through its Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3); UK readers can use the NCSC’s report-a-scam-email guidance. Follow your employer’s internal process where applicable.

Do not delay reporting because you are embarrassed. A fast report can limit financial loss, revoke access, and warn people who may receive the same campaign.

How can organizations reduce both types of phishing?

Controls should assume that a message can be grammatically perfect and that a trusted account or voice can be impersonated. CISA and the FBI recommend strong, unique passwords, a password manager, and multi-factor authentication (MFA). These measures reduce the damage from reused credentials, but staff still need a way to verify payment, account-change, and sensitive-data requests.

Make independent verification normal

Document which requests require a second person, a callback, or an approval in an existing system. Publish the approved phone numbers and escalation routes so employees do not have to trust contact details in an email. For executives and finance teams, require confirmation of new beneficiaries and changed bank details through a previously known channel.

Train for behavior, not for “AI tells”

Awareness training should teach employees to identify the requested action, pause under pressure, inspect destinations, and report quickly. Include email, text, voice, social media, and collaboration platforms. Do not teach that bad grammar identifies traditional phishing or that perfect prose proves AI; both lessons create false confidence.

Preserve a safe reporting path

Give users a one-click reporting option where possible and explain what happens after a report. Security teams can then block related domains, reset exposed accounts, warn recipients, and coordinate with financial institutions or authorities. Keep the original message, headers, numbers, URLs, and payment information when policy allows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does the available activity data show?

The NCSC reported that it had removed 454.8 thousand scam URLs as of July 2026. That is the agency’s count of URLs removed, not a count of all phishing attempts, victims, or AI-generated campaigns, and it does not show what share involved AI. The figure is UK-specific and should not be used to claim that phishing increased or that AI caused the activity. Details are in the NCSC’s reporting guidance.

No directly comparable official figure separates AI-powered phishing from traditional phishing. The practical conclusion is therefore behavioral: defend against the requested action and the verification failure, regardless of how the content was produced.

Which detection ideas should I not trust?

Several shortcuts sound attractive but fail in real incidents:

  • “It has no spelling mistakes, so it is safe.” Editing tools and AI can produce fluent scams, and real messages can be rushed or translated.
  • “The voice is identical, so it must be my colleague.” Voice imitation can be convincing; call a known number instead.
  • “The email address looks right, so I can pay.” Accounts can be compromised and addresses can be spoofed or visually imitated.
  • “The message knows personal details, so it is genuine.” Details may come from public profiles, previous breaches, or an account the attacker already accessed.
  • “An AI detector will give me a definite answer.” The official guidance cited here does not establish a reliable detector that can authenticate a message, voice, or image. Verification of the request is safer than trying to label its origin.

When in doubt, stop the requested action and use a contact method you obtained independently. That single habit works whether the scam was mass-produced, carefully written by a person, or assembled with generative tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a message be fraudulent even when it comes from a real colleague’s account?

Yes. A legitimate mailbox or social account may have been compromised, so the sender address alone is not authentication. Confirm an unusual request through the colleague’s established phone number, a prior chat, or your organization’s normal approval workflow.

Is it safe to reply just to ask whether the sender is genuine?

Replying can confirm that your address or number is active and can invite more manipulation. Use the service’s report function and contact the supposed sender through a route you found independently instead.

Does multi-factor authentication stop phishing?

MFA makes stolen passwords less useful, but attackers may still try to trick you into revealing a one-time code or approving a fraudulent login. Never share a code or approve an unexpected prompt; report repeated prompts to your security team or provider.

What evidence should I keep when reporting a suspected scam?

Save the original message, full sender details, URLs, phone numbers, timestamps, screenshots, and transaction information without clicking further links. Those details help your employer, bank, platform, or reporting authority connect your incident to other reports.
