Only a purpose-designed, measured fabric can be called AI-ready. Distributed training moves data east-west between GPUs in synchronized AllReduce, AllGather and AlltoAll operations. A single congested link or delayed flow can hold up an entire collective, leaving many accelerators idle even when average port utilization looks low. Check aggregate and bisection bandwidth, queue and tail-latency behavior, congestion control, telemetry, optics and failure recovery as one system. NVIDIA documents AI networking components at up to 400Gb/s (BlueField-3) and up to 800Gb/s (ConnectX-8), but a faster port alone does not guarantee faster training. Benchmark your actual workloads at realistic scale before deciding whether 400G, 800G or an intermediate upgrade is justified.

Why does AI traffic behave differently from ordinary data-center traffic?

Conventional data-center networks carry many relatively independent flows. Distributed AI training instead creates a smaller number of very large flows that start and synchronize together. NVIDIA describes this contrast in its “Giga-Scale AI and the Ethernet Evolution” technical material. The traffic pattern is predominantly east-west: GPU servers exchange gradients, activations or requests with one another rather than simply sending data to a storage or internet endpoint.

What do AllReduce, AllGather and AlltoAll do?

Collective operations coordinate the participants in a job. AllReduce combines each GPU’s updates and distributes the result; AllGather makes each participant’s data available to all others; AlltoAll exchanges different partitions between every participant. Implementations divide these operations into chunks and send them over multiple paths, but the operation normally cannot complete until its slowest required transfers finish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That synchronization creates correlated bursts. If one large flow is delayed by a busy queue, an unlucky route or a retransmission, the rest of the GPUs wait at the collective barrier. The visible symptom is often low accelerator utilization rather than an obviously saturated uplink.

Why can average utilization look healthy while training stalls?

A five-minute average can hide millisecond-scale queue buildup, incast (many senders converging on one receiver), hash collisions and tail-latency spikes. Static equal-cost multipath (ECMP) hashing may place several elephant flows on one link while neighboring links remain lightly used. Because collectives wait for the straggler, the overloaded link determines completion time. Buffer overflow can add packet loss and retransmission, extending the stall.

For that reason, review per-port and per-queue time series, queue occupancy, pause events, ECN marks, retransmissions and high-percentile latency. A fabric that reports only mean utilization cannot show whether the slowest collective flow is repeatedly missing its deadline.

How do I calculate the bandwidth an AI cluster needs?

Start with the application’s communication pattern and the topology, not with a preferred switch port speed. Record the number of GPUs per host, NIC rate, number of hosts per rack, oversubscription at every tier and the amount of traffic that must cross each tier during a collective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate aggregate bandwidth from bisection bandwidth

Aggregate bandwidth is the sum of link capacity. Bisection bandwidth is the capacity available when the cluster is split into two equal halves and traffic crosses between them. A cluster can advertise a large aggregate number yet have a narrow bisection that throttles jobs spanning racks or zones. Document host-to-leaf, leaf-to-spine and any inter-zone ratios separately; do not describe a fabric as non-blocking unless the relevant links and forwarding paths actually provide that property for your workload.

Use a worked capacity check

As an arithmetic example, 64 hosts with one 400Gb/s NIC each expose 25.6Tb/s of one-directional host-edge capacity (64 × 400Gb/s). That figure is not a prediction of training throughput: collective algorithms, bidirectional traffic, protocol overhead, PCIe limits and oversubscription determine what the job can use. Repeat the calculation for each tier and for the largest simultaneous job, then verify the result with a benchmark.

  • List the peak and sustained traffic for AllReduce, AllGather and AlltoAll separately.
  • Include inference request and response patterns if the same fabric serves production inference.
  • Calculate the capacity that remains when a link, line card or rack is unavailable.
  • Record whether a figure is per port, per host, per rack or for the whole fabric.

Do AI workloads need 400G or 800G Ethernet?

Neither speed is universally correct. 400G and 800G are deployment points, while the right choice depends on GPU count, collective size, topology, PCIe and memory-transfer limits, cable reach, power and the upgrade horizon.

Reference point What the documented figure means Questions to answer before buying
BlueField-3 SuperNIC Up to 400Gb/s low-latency connectivity, with RDMA/RoCE acceleration and GPUDirect features in NVIDIA reference architectures. Can the host PCIe generation and lane allocation feed the adapter? Are switch ports, optics and software configured for the same rate?
ConnectX-8 SuperNIC Up to 800Gb/s for GPU-to-GPU traffic in the NVL72 reference architecture, with congestion control, telemetry-based routing and QoS capabilities. Will the fabric provide enough bisection bandwidth and port density to use 800Gb/s, and can power, optics and cabling support the reach?
Existing lower-speed fabric Exact usable rate is not stated by the supplied architecture references; performance depends on the installed adapters, switches, topology and workload. Measure collective completion time and accelerator utilization before assuming a replacement is required.

The 400Gb/s and 800Gb/s values are maximum interface specifications cited by NVIDIA, not guaranteed application throughput. An 800G NIC connected through an oversubscribed spine, an under-laned PCIe slot or mismatched optics can deliver less useful capacity than a balanced 400G design.

What topology keeps synchronized traffic from colliding?

A Clos fabric gives multiple paths between racks, but its tiers must be sized for the communication domain. Meta’s August 5, 2024 description of its RoCE network says its AI Zone uses two stages: rack training switches provide scale-up connectivity, while cluster training switches provide scale-out connectivity. 400G pluggable transceivers connect the tiers. Cross-zone links are intentionally oversubscribed and are managed with ECMP plus workload-aware scheduling.

Scale-up and scale-out are different problems

Scale-up traffic stays within a rack or tightly coupled group and is sensitive to port-to-port latency and local fan-in. Scale-out traffic crosses leaf and spine tiers and consumes bisection bandwidth. Size both domains explicitly; a rack can have ample local bandwidth while a multi-rack job is limited by the spine or inter-zone boundary.

Control oversubscription deliberately

Oversubscription is a ratio, not a failure by itself. It can be economical for traffic that is sparse or scheduled, but synchronized collectives can align at the exact moment the shared tier is busiest. Publish the ratio for every boundary, the workloads allowed to share it and the scheduler rule that prevents conflicting jobs from starting together.

Which congestion-control mechanisms matter for AI Ethernet?

Evaluate the complete transport behavior rather than selecting a feature by name. The IETF “Benchmarking Methodology for AI Training Network Fabrics” draft includes RoCEv2, UET, priority flow control (PFC), explicit congestion notification (ECN), DCQCN, credit-based flow control, ECMP, dynamic load balancing and packet spraying as test dimensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RoCEv2, PFC and ECN

RoCEv2 carries RDMA over routed Ethernet. PFC can pause a priority when a queue is filling, while ECN marks packets so endpoints can reduce sending rates. Poorly scoped PFC can propagate pauses upstream and create a larger incident; ECN thresholds that are too high allow loss, while thresholds that are too low reduce throughput. Test pause propagation, queue depth and tail latency under incast instead of accepting vendor defaults.

DCQCN, UET and alternative controls

DCQCN is a congestion-control approach used with RoCE deployments. UET and credit-based schemes offer other ways to coordinate sending and receiving behavior. The useful question is not which acronym is newest, but whether the chosen transport keeps collective completion time stable under mixed workloads, failures and long-duration load.

ECMP, dynamic load balancing and packet spraying

Static ECMP can repeatedly hash elephant flows onto the same link. Dynamic load balancing or packet spraying can spread traffic more evenly, but they add ordering, telemetry and implementation requirements. Measure reordering, per-flow fairness and the recovery time when a path changes.

How should NICs, switches, optics and cabling be matched?

Treat the path from GPU memory to the remote GPU as one bill of materials. Confirm that the SuperNIC, PCIe slot and firmware support the intended rate and RDMA features; that switch ASICs and software expose the required queues, ECN and telemetry; and that the transceiver, DAC or AOC is rated for the speed and distance.

  • Check connector type, fiber or copper medium, reach, temperature rating and interoperability for every link.
  • Verify that breakouts, lane mappings and FEC settings match on both ends.
  • Budget rack power and cooling for high-density 400G or 800G ports, not just the adapter’s list price.
  • Keep spare optics and a documented replacement procedure; an unavailable optic can remove an entire training path.
  • Align driver, firmware, RDMA/RoCE stack, collective library and orchestrator versions before production rollout.

Do not infer end-to-end capacity from a module label. A host with insufficient PCIe lanes, a switch with blocked uplinks or a cable outside its validated reach can become the limiting component.

How do I benchmark an AI fabric realistically?

Use application-shaped traffic and report job outcomes. The IETF methodology recommends testing the collectives and transport behaviors that determine training time, then repeating them at scale and during soak tests.

  1. Define the workload matrix. Include AllReduce, AllGather and AlltoAll at the message sizes and concurrency used by your training and inference jobs. Record GPU count, host count and placement.
  2. Establish a baseline. Measure collective throughput, job-completion time, training throughput and accelerator utilization on the current fabric.
  3. Instrument congestion. Capture per-port and per-queue utilization, queue depth, ECN marks, PFC pauses, drops, retransmissions, path changes and high-percentile latency.
  4. Scale out. Repeat the tests from one rack to multiple racks and across every oversubscribed boundary. Compare bisection behavior, not just a single host-to-host result.
  5. Run mixed traffic. Combine collectives with storage, checkpointing, management and inference flows to expose queue interference.
  6. Soak and fail links. Sustain the workload long enough to reveal thermal or buffer effects, then remove a link or switch path and record reroute time and lost work.
  7. Set acceptance thresholds. Approve a design only when completion time, utilization, tail latency and congestion remain within the limits your service-level objective requires.

A benchmark that reports only line rate can reward an expensive interface that does not shorten a training job. Keep the raw counters and job traces so later firmware, driver or topology changes can be compared against the same workload.

What telemetry and operations are required after deployment?

AI fabrics need visibility at the queue and collective level. Alert on sustained tail latency, rising ECN or PFC events, retransmission bursts, uneven link utilization and repeated stragglers. Correlate those signals with a job’s rank, host and collective phase so operators can distinguish a bad path from an inefficient application placement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use workload-aware scheduling when shared tiers are intentionally oversubscribed, as Meta describes for cross-zone connectivity. Reserve maintenance windows or drain jobs before changing ECN thresholds, firmware or routing policy; synchronized traffic can turn a small transient into a cluster-wide pause.

How should failure recovery be tested?

Remove one cable, optic, switch port and uplink in separate tests, then observe whether traffic reroutes without a collective timeout. Record the time to detect the failure, install a new path, retransmit lost data and resume normal accelerator utilization.

Recovery is a system property. Fast routing is not enough if the collective library aborts, the scheduler restarts every rank or a replacement path is oversubscribed. Include degraded-capacity operation in acceptance tests and document which failures require job restart.

What should a purchasing comparison include?

Compare complete designs per GPU or host, not isolated switch prices. Use the following axes when evaluating proposals:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Axis What to verify
Capacity Aggregate and bisection bandwidth at each tier; documented oversubscription ratios.
Collectives AllReduce, AllGather and AlltoAll throughput and job-completion time at target scale.
Latency and congestion Tail latency, queue depth, loss, pause behavior, ECN/DCQCN or UET response.
Path selection ECMP, dynamic load balancing or packet spraying behavior, including reordering.
Telemetry Per-port and per-queue counters, congestion visibility and actionable alerts.
Physical layer Optics, DAC/AOC reach, FEC, lane mapping, power, cooling and port density.
Software NIC firmware, drivers, RDMA/RoCE stack, collective library and orchestration integration.
Resilience Reroute time, degraded-capacity behavior, spare inventory and operational procedures.
Total cost Adapters, switches, optics, cabling, licenses, power, cooling and cost per GPU or host; exact prices depend on supplier and region.

What is a sensible upgrade path?

Take measurements before replacing hardware. First instrument the existing fabric and run collective benchmarks. Next remove the measured bottleneck—often an oversubscribed tier, insufficient PCIe connectivity, poor queue settings or uneven path selection—then retest. Move to 400G when balanced host and fabric capacity, power and reach requirements support it; choose 800G when the workload and topology can consume the additional interface capacity and the operational budget supports the denser design.

What is the practical verdict?

AI readiness is demonstrated by stable job completion and accelerator utilization under synchronized, congested and partially failed conditions—not by an attractive port-speed number. Build the fabric as an end-to-end system, measure the collectives your applications use, and choose 400G, 800G or a lower-speed design only after the evidence shows where capacity and latency are limiting the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are 400G and 800G speeds measured per GPU or per switch?

They are interface-rate specifications for a SuperNIC or network port, not a promise that one GPU will receive that throughput. Usable application bandwidth is constrained by PCIe, memory movement, protocol overhead, topology and contention on shared links.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a small AI team keep its existing Ethernet fabric?

Possibly, if measurements show that collective completion time and accelerator utilization meet the team’s targets at its planned scale. Run AllReduce and AllGather tests with realistic message sizes first; a low average load by itself is not evidence that the fabric is sufficient.

How often should an AI network be soak-tested?

Run a soak test before production acceptance and repeat it after major changes to firmware, drivers, congestion thresholds, routing or collective libraries. Include mixed workloads and monitor tail latency, queue behavior and retransmissions for the full test interval.

What does a failed link do to a distributed training job?

A correctly engineered fabric should detect the failure, reroute traffic and continue with reduced capacity, but the actual result depends on routing, transport and the collective library. Test each failure type explicitly because some combinations still trigger a collective timeout or require restarting ranks.
