Artists have the most control when they separate three decisions: whether a recording may train an AI model, who owns a generated track under a service’s contract, and what copyright a human creator can claim. Those rights are not interchangeable. Ditto’s optional licensing program asks for explicit opt-in and pays royalties; Sony Music Group has published a broad reservation against unauthorized mining and AI training; Suno changes ownership and commercial rights by plan and creation date; and YouTube requires delivery disclosures for fully or partly AI-generated music. Before uploading anything, confirm permissions for every input, save the terms in force when you create each track, document the AI contribution, and keep the licenses and delivery metadata together.
What kinds of control can an artist actually exercise?
Control exists at several layers, and a service may offer one without offering the others.
Training consent
This is permission for a company to use your recordings, lyrics, stems, voice or other material to train, improve or evaluate an AI model. It is a separate decision from using an AI generator. Ditto’s program, described on August 25, 2026, is optional, requires explicit consent and is limited to artists or rights holders who own and control 100% of the recording rights. You can opt in a whole catalog, future releases or individual releases, and Ditto says licensing revenue is paid as royalties.
Output ownership and commercial permission
A service contract can assign or license rights in a generated song even when copyright law would not recognize the output as a human-authored work. Suno, for example, treats songs made while a subscriber is on its Pro or Premier plans as owned by that subscriber and grants commercial-use rights. Its free Basic creations are non-commercial and owned by Suno under the stated terms.

Copyright
Copyright is determined by applicable law, not merely by a platform label. Suno’s January 7, 2026 guidance says music made entirely with AI may not qualify for U.S. copyright because no human wrote the lyrics or music, while human-written lyrics may be protectable separately. The result can differ by country and by how much original human expression is present.
Disclosure and provenance
Distributors and platforms increasingly ask whether a track is fully AI-generated, partly AI-generated or has no generative-AI contribution. Accurate declarations help platforms apply labeling and downstream usage rules, but they do not replace licenses or prove copyright ownership.
Which services let artists opt in or reserve their work from training?
Ditto’s opt-in licensing program
Ditto’s arrangement is a consent-based licensing choice rather than an automatic condition of distribution. You must own and control 100% of the relevant recording rights. Participation can cover an entire catalog, future releases or selected releases, and Ditto says you may end participation later. The payment mechanism is licensing revenue delivered as royalties.

Ending participation therefore governs future licensing, not an instant rewind of model history. Keep a copy of your consent, the covered recordings and the date you opted in or out.
Sony Music Group’s reservation
In its May 16, 2024 declaration, Sony Music Group stated that its controlled content is expressly opted out of text and data mining, web scraping, extraction and use for training, developing or commercializing AI systems unless explicitly authorized. The declaration covers multiple forms of copying and extraction, not only a particular music generator.

This is a rights reservation by a major rights holder, not a technical block that every platform must automatically enforce. An artist or label still needs to check a service’s ingestion, licensing and enforcement practices, especially where recordings have already been copied or transformed.
How do Suno’s plan and creation-date rules affect your rights?
Suno’s contract separates free and paid creations, and a later upgrade does not change the status of an older track. Save the subscription tier and terms that applied at the moment each song was generated.

These are contractual rights, not a guarantee of copyright registration. If a track is fully generated, the U.S. copyright position described by Suno may leave the musical material unprotected. Original lyrics you wrote yourself can be evaluated separately, and a human-performed or substantially human-composed arrangement may create additional protectable elements depending on local law.
What does YouTube require when music includes generative AI?
YouTube’s music-delivery guidance distinguishes the AI contribution instead of treating every assisted track the same way.
Choose the correct declaration
- Fully gen-AI: the complete track is generated from a prompt, with no human recording supplying the musical performance.
- Partly gen-AI: an AI-generated layer is combined with human material, such as live vocals over an AI-generated instrumental.
- No gen-AI: conventional recording, editing or effects were used without generative music or voice creation.
Partners can send these states through DDEX or CSV metadata. YouTube may also use additional signals, so a declaration is not the only source of labeling information. Give your distributor the same classification you keep in your project records; inconsistent metadata can create avoidable corrections.

Dream Track availability and remixing
YouTube says Dream Track creates a soundtrack from a text prompt, displays an AI label and can make eligible published sounds available for remixing. The feature is available in most countries outside the European Economic Area, with additional U.S. access through YouTube Create. Availability, eligible sounds and regional rules can change, so check the current help information before planning a release around the feature.
Publishing a sound can therefore create a new reuse path. Review whether your collaborators, session musicians and vocalists have agreed to that type of remix exposure before you publish.
What does Udio’s label-licensed model approach change?
Udio’s November 19, 2025 help-center announcement describes a Warner Music Group licensing arrangement. It says licensed models may support remixes, covers and new songs using participating artists’ voices and styles, with safeguards and new revenue opportunities for artists and songwriters.
The announcement does not establish that every artist, model or territory is included. Treat the participating catalog, available features and transition terms as changeable. Before relying on a voice or style, read the current service terms and confirm that the specific artist is covered by the licensed program rather than assuming that a familiar name is available.
How do the main control options compare?

What should you do before generating or releasing a track?
- Inventory every input. List recordings, stems, samples, lyrics, images used for cover art, names and voice likenesses. Mark who owns each item and attach the written permission or license.
- Separate training consent from generation consent. Decide whether your work may train a model, whether the service can improve voice models with it, and whether you are only authorizing one output. Do not treat a generation checkbox as blanket permission for catalog training.
- Capture the governing terms. Save the plan name, subscription status, terms URL or downloaded terms, model version if shown, and creation timestamp. For plan-based systems, this is the evidence that a commercial license applied when the song was made.
- Record human contributions. Keep lyric drafts, MIDI or notation, session files, vocal takes, arrangement edits and dates. Identify which passages are wholly generated and which contain your original writing or performance.
- Check voice and style permissions. A prompt that imitates a living performer is not permission to use that performer’s identity. Use a licensed participation program or an expressly authorized voice, and document the scope.
- Classify the AI contribution for delivery. Choose fully gen-AI, partly gen-AI or no gen-AI. Send the same classification through the distributor’s DDEX or CSV workflow when available.
- Review reuse settings. Before publishing a sound, understand whether other users can remix, cover, download or sample it. Obtain collaborator approval for those downstream uses.
- Store a release packet. Keep consent records, licenses, split sheets, project exports, plan evidence and delivery metadata in one folder linked to the track identifier.
What are the most common mistakes, and how can you fix them?
Assuming a paid subscription creates copyright
A paid plan can grant contractual ownership and commercial permission while leaving copyright uncertain. Fix this by documenting your human-authored lyrics, performances and composition, then seek advice for the jurisdiction where protection matters.
Upgrading an old free song and selling it
Suno states that a later Pro or Premier subscription does not make an earlier Basic creation commercially licensed. Recreate the song during the paid period or obtain a separate written authorization before monetizing it.
Opting out after training and expecting deletion
Ditto’s warning is explicit: training already completed cannot be reversed by removing a release later. Decide before enrollment, retain the opt-in date and ask the service what future-use termination actually covers.
Uploading a collaborator’s material without clearance
Suno’s terms require uploaders to possess all rights and permissions for submitted material. Get written approval from co-writers, vocalists, labels and sample licensors before uploading, including permission for model training or improvement where the terms request it.

Calling a track “no AI” when it contains a generated layer can conflict with distributor metadata and platform labels. Keep a simple production log and use the fully, partly or no-gen-AI categories consistently.

Treating a public opt-out as a technical guarantee
Sony’s declaration reserves rights but does not automatically prevent every copy or scrape. Combine the notice with access controls, fingerprinting, takedown procedures and contract clauses where you control the relevant catalog.
How should artists evaluate a new AI music service?
Read the service’s current terms before creating a commercially important track. Look for these exact answers:
- Does training require affirmative opt-in, or is it bundled into use of the generator?
- Can consent be withdrawn, and what happens to models trained before withdrawal?
- Who owns outputs, and is that ownership limited by plan, territory or creation date?
- Is commercial distribution allowed on the plan you are using?
- What permissions are required for uploaded recordings, lyrics, voices and styles?
- How are AI contributions disclosed to distributors and platforms?
- Can published sounds be remixed, downloaded or reused by other users?
- Which countries, model versions, partner catalogs and transition terms apply?
Recheck those answers when a model, plan or label partnership changes. A service announcement can describe an intended safeguard without fixing the rights for every future version or territory.

Can I withdraw a track from an AI licensing program after it has been accepted?
Usually you can stop future participation only if the program’s terms provide that option. Ask for written confirmation of the effective date, the releases covered and whether pending royalty statements or existing licenses continue.
What evidence helps prove my human contribution to an AI-assisted song?
Keep dated lyric and melody drafts, multitrack session files, live takes, MIDI edits and collaborator agreements. A clear production log linking those files to the final master is more useful than a screenshot of a prompt alone.
Can I use a famous singer’s sound in an AI-generated chorus?
Only when you have an express authorization or the service’s licensed program clearly covers that artist, territory and use. A stylistic description is not the same as permission to reproduce a person’s voice or identity.
What metadata should I send a distributor for an AI-assisted release?
Provide the distributor’s requested AI classification, such as fully gen-AI or partly gen-AI, through its DDEX or CSV process when supported. Keep the underlying consent, license and creation-date records even if the distributor accepts only a short metadata field.

Does a platform’s AI label stop other users from remixing my sound?
