AI infrastructure spending is already a major investment cycle: it funds data centres, chips, networking, electricity supply, cooling, storage, and construction. It can support economic growth through building and operating that infrastructure, and through productivity gains when businesses use AI effectively. But the benefits are not automatic: the evidence on jobs is mixed, productivity gains vary, and power, grid capacity, water, and skills can constrain who benefits.
How much is being spent on AI infrastructure?
The spending is large, but the headline figures measure different things. Some describe capital expenditure by a group of technology companies; others cover investment in data centres worldwide. They should not be added together or treated as a single, precise measure of AI-only spending.
| Measure | Reported figure | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Capital expenditure by five large technology companies | More than USD 400 billion in 2025; the International Energy Agency expected a further 75% increase in 2026 | Company capital expenditure, as reported by the IEA in 2026. The 2026 figure is an expectation, not a confirmed full-year result. |
| Global data-centre investment | About USD 500 billion in 2024 | Data-centre investment worldwide, reported by the IEA in 2025; it is not an estimate of AI-specific investment alone. |
| Global data-centre electricity consumption | 415 TWh, or about 1.5% of global electricity, in 2024 | Data centres worldwide, not just facilities running AI workloads, according to the IEA in 2025. |
The figures describe an infrastructure buildout, not just purchases of AI software. Spending can go toward buildings, servers and accelerators, networking equipment, storage, cooling systems, and the electricity connections required to run them. The scale of each category, and how much is attributable specifically to AI, is not established by these aggregate figures.

A data centre is a coordinated physical system. More computing equipment can require additional power capacity, cooling, network connections, and storage; those dependencies can bring construction and grid work into the investment cycle as well. That means the economic effects extend beyond the technology companies buying computing equipment to contractors, equipment suppliers, utilities, and communities hosting facilities.

However, investment is not the same as economic value created. A facility may be built before its full capacity is used, and installed computing power does not by itself show that businesses have changed their workflows or become more productive. The return depends on utilization and on complementary investments such as suitable software, reliable data, employee skills, and organizational changes.
How can AI infrastructure spending increase economic growth?
Investment can raise economic activity directly while infrastructure is built, and it can enable later productivity gains. A reported estimate puts AI-related technology investment’s contribution to U.S. GDP growth in 2025 at 0.5 percentage point; that is an estimate of a contribution to growth, not a claim that AI caused all U.S. growth that year.
There are three distinct channels to keep in mind:
- Construction and equipment demand: Building facilities and buying computing, networking, and power-related equipment creates demand for goods and services. This activity can support employment and supplier revenue during the buildout.
- Capital deepening: Firms that use more or better computing resources may produce more output with a given amount of labor. The EIB’s firm-level study associates AI adoption with higher labor productivity and attributes the measured increase to capital deepening rather than short-run job losses.
- Operational productivity: AI tools may help workers complete particular tasks more quickly or support new ways of working. Whether that translates into more output, lower costs, higher quality, or new products depends on how firms apply the tools.
These channels operate on different timelines. Spending on construction and equipment is visible as it occurs; productivity improvements require adoption and changes inside firms, and can take longer to measure. They can also be uneven: some companies may see useful results while others invest without achieving comparable gains.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGDP measures economic output, not whether its gains are shared broadly or whether a project is worthwhile after accounting for its full costs. An investment cycle can add to measured activity while increasing pressure on electricity systems or producing uneven outcomes for workers and regions. A growth estimate therefore answers a narrower question than whether AI infrastructure delivers a lasting net benefit for society.
Does AI infrastructure raise productivity?
Early evidence points to productivity gains, but the size of the effect depends on what is measured. Firm-level estimates and task-level experiments or summaries are not interchangeable: a faster task does not automatically mean the whole firm produces more, and firm averages do not guarantee that every worker or industry benefits.

| Evidence | Finding | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| European Investment Bank study, 2026 | An estimated 4% labor-productivity increase associated with AI adoption across more than 12,000 European and U.S. firms | An association in a firm study, attributed to capital deepening; it is not a guarantee that every adopter will achieve the same increase. |
| International Labour Organization summary, 2026 | Typical task-level productivity gains ranging from 10% to 70% | Task-level gains vary and do not establish a matching productivity increase for an entire company or economy. |
The distinction between task speed and firm productivity matters. If an AI tool helps complete one step faster, the time saved may be absorbed by review, corrections, coordination, or other work. A firm-level gain is more likely to persist when the process is redesigned so that workers can use the saved time productively and the output meets the required standard.
What determines whether computing capacity becomes useful?
- Workflow fit: The task must be suitable for AI assistance, and the tool must fit the way work is actually done.
- Data and software: Workers need access to relevant information and systems that let them incorporate outputs into existing processes.
- Skills and review: Employees need to know how to use outputs appropriately and when to check or correct them.
- Organizational change: Managers may need to adjust roles, processes, and performance measures rather than simply add a tool to an unchanged workflow.
- Cost and reliability: The value of a faster task must justify the costs of computing, electricity, implementation, and any additional review.
These conditions help explain why more infrastructure does not automatically produce a proportional rise in productivity. Compute is an enabling input. The economic result depends on whether firms can turn that input into useful work at a cost and quality that make sense.
Will data-centre investment create or destroy jobs?
It can create demand for workers during construction and operations while changing the tasks and hiring needs of businesses that adopt AI. Current evidence does not support a simple claim that the buildout has already caused broad job losses; it also cannot rule out displacement in particular occupations or future changes as adoption develops.
A 2026 Federal Reserve analysis found no evidence that U.S. firms or industries with higher AI adoption reduced total job postings through the study period. Its authors described the evidence as “consistent with a buildout phase rather than the onset of broad-based displacement.” Job postings are an indicator of hiring demand, however, not a complete count of employment, wages, hours, or job quality.
Where employment effects can differ
- Infrastructure construction: Building data centres and related facilities creates project demand for construction and equipment work. The number and duration of jobs depend on the project; the aggregate figures do not specify local employment totals.
- Facility operations: Data centres need ongoing technical and operational work, though the available figures do not quantify the number of jobs per facility.
- AI-using businesses: Some tasks may be assisted or sped up, while hiring needs can shift among roles. A change in tasks is not automatically a lost job; the effect depends on how a firm reorganizes work and demand for its products.
- Occupations with exposed tasks: Hiring may weaken or tasks may be reorganized in specific occupations even when total job postings across firms or industries do not fall.
The ILO’s 2024 assessment is that generative AI is more likely in the near term to augment and speed some tasks within occupations than to automate whole occupations. That framing does not mean every worker benefits: the impact can vary by role, skills, age, and country, and lower-income countries may capture fewer benefits where infrastructure and skills are limited.

For workers, the practical question is not only whether a job title is exposed to AI. It is also which tasks make up the job, whether AI changes the volume or quality of work, and whether the employer invests in training and redesign. The available evidence describes early effects; it does not settle long-run employment outcomes as adoption expands.
Will AI boost GDP or just increase electricity demand?
It can do both. Data centres are a modest share of global electricity use in the reported 2024 estimate, but their demand is concentrated in particular places and can grow quickly enough to strain local grids. The economic outcome depends partly on whether electricity supply and infrastructure can expand without undermining affordability or reliability.
The International Monetary Fund reported in 2025 that electricity represents 13–15% of data-centre companies’ total costs. It also cited a possible 1,500 TWh of AI-driven global electricity consumption by 2030. That is a possibility cited by the IMF, not a guaranteed outcome or a measurement of current consumption. Actual demand will depend on the pace and efficiency of deployment, utilization, and the energy systems serving data centres.
Why local effects can be larger than the global share suggests
A global percentage averages across regions, while a new facility draws power from a specific grid. Where electricity supply, transmission capacity, or grid connections are constrained, a concentrated increase in demand can make planning and upgrades more urgent. Local impacts may include pressure on electricity prices, emissions, water use, and permitting decisions.
Whether a facility contributes to emissions depends on the electricity supply it uses, while the scale of water effects depends on the cooling arrangements and local conditions. The supplied aggregate figures do not establish a single water-use rate, emissions impact, or electricity-price effect for every data centre. Those outcomes require location- and facility-specific information.

Who pays for the power and grid upgrades needed for AI?
There is no single answer for every project or electricity market. The company building or operating a data centre pays its own capital and operating costs, including electricity bills, but the ultimate cost of grid expansion can depend on local utility rules, project agreements, and how infrastructure costs are allocated among customers or public funding.
The distinction is between a facility’s private costs and the wider system costs of serving it. A data-centre company may pay for equipment on its site and for electricity it consumes, while upgrades to shared generation, transmission, or distribution infrastructure may be treated differently under local arrangements. Without project- and jurisdiction-specific data, it is not possible to say that a particular community, utility, taxpayer, or customer group bears a fixed share.
For a proposed project, the questions that clarify cost allocation are:
- Which grid connections and upgrades are required, and who funds each one?
- Are costs assigned directly to the facility, recovered through electricity rates, or supported by public funding?
- How are costs treated if the facility uses less power than planned or closes?
- What assumptions about demand, timing, and electricity supply underlie the project’s approval?
Those answers matter because a project can create economic activity for its host area while also creating costs or constraints that are not captured in the company’s investment total. Local impact depends on the terms and the capacity of the power system, not solely on the headline size of the investment.
What determines whether this investment cycle produces broad benefits?
The main test is not how much computing capacity is installed, but whether it can be used productively and sustainably. A useful comparison between infrastructure strategies considers both what the investment enables and what it demands from workers, energy systems, and local communities.

| Decision area | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Capital and financing | How much capital is committed, and how is the investment financed? | Large projects carry costs before the full economic return is known. |
| Electricity and grid capacity | Can power and connections be supplied on the project’s timeline? | Energy access can limit the speed and scale of deployment. |
| Chips and equipment | Can the required chips, memory, storage, and networking equipment be supplied reliably? | Supply constraints can delay construction or limit utilization. |
| Employment | What local construction and operating work is expected, and how might adoption change roles elsewhere? | Local job creation and broader labor-market changes occur through different channels. |
| Productivity per unit of compute | What useful output does the infrastructure enable relative to its cost and resource use? | Installed capacity alone does not establish economic value. |
| Community and environmental effects | What are the expected effects on emissions, water, electricity costs, and permitting? | Local conditions determine whether costs or benefits are concentrated. |
| Complementary capabilities | Are software, data, trained workers, and process changes in place? | These inputs help determine whether infrastructure becomes durable productivity. |
These considerations also explain why the investment cycle may have different outcomes across countries and firms. Places with the power infrastructure and skills to deploy AI may capture more of the gains than places that lack those complements. Likewise, companies that successfully reorganize work may benefit more than those that simply purchase capacity.
The evidence is still early and uneven. Current U.S. job-posting data do not show a broad decline tied to higher adoption, and firm- and task-level studies indicate productivity potential. Neither finding resolves the long-run distribution of gains, the employment effects of wider adoption, or the full local cost of supplying energy and infrastructure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 1.5% electricity figure mean AI already uses 1.5% of the world’s power?
No. It refers to all data centres globally in 2024, not electricity used exclusively for AI. AI workloads are one part of data-centre demand, and the cited figure does not separate them.
Can a city tell whether a proposed data centre will lower local electricity prices?
The aggregate figures cannot answer that. The result depends on local generation and grid capacity, project-specific costs, and how the utility or regulator allocates upgrades; a city would need those details to assess the proposal.
Why can a faster AI-assisted task fail to improve a company’s productivity?
Time saved on one task may be spent checking outputs, fixing errors, or coordinating with other workers. If the company does not change the surrounding process or use the saved time productively, a task-level speedup may not translate into more valuable output.
