AI coding assistants can help developers complete more work, but they do not guarantee faster or better software. In three randomized field experiments involving 4,867 developers, access to an AI coding assistant was associated with a 26.08% increase in completed tasks; that is evidence of a productivity effect in those study settings, not a forecast for every team. The broader lesson is that AI shifts effort toward specifying, checking, testing, and integrating work—and the quality of a team’s engineering system determines whether that shift pays off.
How is AI changing software engineering teams?
AI assistance is becoming a routine part of development, but its most important effect is not simply that code appears faster. It changes where developers spend attention: less time may go to typing or searching, while more goes to describing the task, judging an answer, testing it, and fitting it into a larger system.
That shift affects the whole software lifecycle. Microsoft describes the relevant work as building, testing, and delivering software, and its research initiative examines developer efficiency alongside software safety and risk. An assistant that produces a function is only useful if the function meets the requirement, works with the rest of the codebase, and can be maintained after it is merged.

For teams, this makes AI adoption an organizational question as much as an individual one. Internal platforms, clear workflows, automated tests, mature version control, fast feedback, and stable priorities influence whether faster code generation translates into a better delivery process. DORA’s 2025 report, based on more than 100 hours of qualitative research and nearly 5,000 technology professionals, describes AI as an amplifier of existing organizational strengths and weaknesses. In the words of DORA lead Nathen Harvey and Google Cloud researcher Derek DeBellis: “AI doesn’t fix a team; it amplifies what’s already there.”

Does AI actually make developers more productive?
There is controlled evidence of a productivity gain, but it should be read as a result from specific experiments rather than a universal promise. Microsoft Research reported three randomized field experiments at Microsoft, Accenture, and an anonymous Fortune 100 company. Across 4,867 developers, those given an AI coding assistant completed 26.08% more tasks.
Less experienced developers adopted the assistant more and saw greater gains in those experiments. That matters because AI may help people get unstuck or move through unfamiliar tasks, but it does not show that every developer, task, or organization will receive the same boost. The study’s result is about completed tasks in its participating organizations and experimental conditions; it is not proof that overall product quality, customer value, or long-term delivery speed rises by the same percentage.
Survey data describes adoption and perceptions, not the same kind of causal effect. Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey drew more than 49,000 responses from 177 countries. It found that 84% of respondents use or plan to use AI tools, and 51% of professional developers use them daily. At the same time, positive sentiment fell to about 60%, 46% distrusted the accuracy of AI output, and only 3% reported highly trusting it. Broad use and limited confidence can coexist: developers may find assistance useful while still treating its output as a draft that must be checked.

Why does AI amplify the engineering system around it?
An assistant can increase the amount of code or change proposals entering a workflow. Whether that additional volume becomes useful delivery depends on the workflow’s ability to detect errors, move changes safely, and return feedback quickly. If those controls are weak, more output can mean more rework rather than more value.

DORA’s 2025 findings point to automated testing, mature version control, and fast feedback loops as controls that help teams absorb increased change volume. DORA’s 2024 report, drawing on more than 39,000 professionals globally, also places AI alongside platform engineering and stable priorities. Together, these findings support pairing AI adoption with improvements to the development environment and delivery process, rather than treating tool access as the rollout itself.
What a capable delivery system provides
- Clear paths to production: Developers know how a change moves from a local edit through review, testing, and release.
- Automated checks: Tests and code-quality controls can catch classes of mistakes consistently before changes reach users.
- Fast, useful feedback: Developers can see whether a proposed change passes checks and where it fails without prolonged uncertainty.
- Shared ownership: People know who reviews consequential changes and who is accountable for accepting or rejecting generated work.
- Stable priorities: Teams have enough clarity about the problem to give an assistant a meaningful task and judge whether the result solves it.
These are not guarantees that an AI-generated change will be correct. They are conditions that make mistakes more visible and recovery more manageable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan AI-generated code be trusted?
Not by default. The practical question is whether a specific result is correct, secure, maintainable, and less expensive to verify than to produce another way. Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey found that 66% of respondents were frustrated by AI solutions that were “almost right, but not quite,” while 45% said debugging AI-generated code takes more time. A plausible answer can still fail requirements or create work that is hard to diagnose.
Trust should be earned at the level of each change. A developer needs to understand what the code does and how it affects neighboring components, not merely whether it looks reasonable. Tests help, but passing tests only establish that the tested conditions passed; they do not by themselves prove that the change is secure, complete, or appropriate for the design.
Keep the verification effort visible. If a task routinely requires extensive correction, unclear prompts, or difficult debugging, record that cost rather than counting the generated draft as a productivity win. The comparison that matters is the full path from task definition through a validated, integrated change.

Which software tasks are suitable for AI assistance?
Use task risk and the available verification path to decide how much autonomy is appropriate. The survey evidence shows that developers are more hesitant to delegate high-responsibility systemic work than work that can be reviewed against concrete checks.

| Work area | What developers reported | Practical boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Documentation and testing | Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey reports expectations that future use will grow in these areas. | Good candidates for assistance when a person checks accuracy, coverage, and consistency with the code or product. |
| Deployment and monitoring | 76% of surveyed developers did not plan to use AI for this work. | Keep consequential operational decisions under clear human ownership; treat generated suggestions as proposals that require validation. |
| Project planning | 69% of surveyed developers did not plan to use AI for this work. | Use assistance, if at all, to organize or draft material; retain human responsibility for priorities, trade-offs, and commitments. |
The percentages above describe respondents to the 2025 Stack Overflow survey, not a universal consensus or a measure of task danger. They indicate where reluctance is strongest. A team can also classify work by blast radius: a small, reversible change with clear tests can tolerate a different workflow from a production-impacting change that affects reliability or sensitive data.
Do AI tools improve collaboration, or mainly individual speed?
So far, survey results point to stronger perceived individual productivity than collaboration. Among agent users in Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey, about 70% agreed that agents reduce time on specific development tasks and 69% agreed that they increase productivity, while only 17% agreed that they improve collaboration.
That gap is a warning against assuming that an individual’s faster workflow automatically makes the team more effective. If generated changes increase review load, obscure how a solution works, or create work that only one person can explain, local speed can become a shared bottleneck. Conversely, teams can use assistance to make knowledge easier to access and work easier to review—but those outcomes require deliberate practices and measurement.
GitHub’s survey of 2,000 people on software development teams in the United States, Brazil, India, and Germany also frames enterprise adoption as a multidisciplinary team question, not only a developer preference. In practice, engineering leadership, security, platform teams, and people responsible for delivery need a shared understanding of where assistants are allowed, how results are checked, and what outcomes count as success.

What risks should teams address before rollout?
Accuracy is not the only concern. In Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey, 87% of respondents reported concern about agent accuracy, and 81% reported concern about security and privacy. These are reported concerns, not measurements of incident rates, but they show why teams need explicit controls rather than relying on informal caution.
Set boundaries for data and access
Define what source code, customer information, credentials, and other sensitive material may be submitted to an AI service. Confirm the organization’s approved data boundaries and relevant retention or model-training settings before using a tool with non-public material. Limit access according to role and need, and ensure secrets are handled through established secure workflows rather than copied into prompts.
Put checks in the delivery path
Use code and dependency scanning, reproducible tests, and human review for consequential changes. Keep an audit trail for agent actions where the tool can take multi-step actions, and make ownership explicit: a person or team must accept or reject the output. Security and quality checks should operate throughout development, not appear only as a final approval gate.
Prepare for failure and recovery
Teams should be able to reproduce a failure, identify what changed, and revert or correct it using their normal version-control and release processes. If an assistant is unavailable, the team should still be able to perform essential work. That resilience is part of good workflow design, not a reason to prohibit useful assistance.

How should a team roll out AI coding tools safely?
A safe rollout is a measured change to the engineering workflow. Start with bounded tasks and existing controls, then expand only when evidence shows that the tool improves outcomes without unacceptable costs.

- Choose a defined use case. Identify work such as drafting tests, explaining code, or producing documentation where reviewers can compare the result with clear requirements. Avoid beginning with high-consequence operational decisions.
- Set policy before access spreads. Specify approved tools and data boundaries, the handling of secrets, who may enable agent actions, and which changes require human review. Include security, platform, and delivery stakeholders in the policy.
- Establish a baseline. Record relevant measures before rollout: delivery cycle time, escaped defects, change-failure rate, review load, onboarding time, reliability, and developer experience. Choose measures that match the intended use case rather than measuring tool usage alone.
- Run a bounded pilot. Use a limited team or workflow with normal version control, tests, scanning, and review. Capture both successful work and time spent prompting, correcting, debugging, and reviewing output.
- Review team-level effects. Compare the pilot with the baseline and look for trade-offs. Faster completion of one task is not a net gain if it increases defects, creates a review queue, or shifts hidden work onto another role.
- Adjust and expand deliberately. Improve instructions, training, platform support, or policy where the pilot exposed friction. Expand to additional tasks only when the required verification and ownership are clear.
For comparing tools or rollout options, use the same criteria rather than relying on headline capability. Consider task coverage, verification cost, integration with source control and delivery systems, security and privacy controls, team effects, measurable outcomes, and the support needed for training and change management. The best fit is not necessarily the tool that generates the most; it is the one that helps a team deliver validated work within its constraints.
How should leaders know whether adoption is working?
Measure the engineering outcomes the change is meant to improve. DORA’s findings emphasize the surrounding delivery system, while Stack Overflow’s agent data shows that perceived personal productivity does not automatically imply better collaboration. Those points make a balanced scorecard more useful than adoption counts alone.
- Throughput: Are changes or tasks reaching completion more efficiently?
- Stability: Are escaped defects, change failures, or reliability problems increasing?
- Review health: Is review time manageable, and do reviewers understand the changes they approve?
- Developer experience: Does the workflow reduce friction, or does prompting and debugging simply replace other forms of work?
- Team resilience: Can people maintain, explain, and continue the work without depending on one assistant or one individual?
Interpret results carefully. The 2025 Stack Overflow survey, the Microsoft Research field experiments, and DORA’s reports cover different populations and use different methods. Their figures should not be combined into a forecast for an individual organization. Use them to frame questions, then evaluate your own workflow with clearly defined measures and a comparison point.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will AI replace software developers?
The evidence summarized here measures tool adoption, task completion, and developer perceptions; it does not establish that AI will eliminate software-development roles. It does show that some work is shifting toward specifying, reviewing, testing, and integrating changes, so teams should plan for changing responsibilities rather than infer a job forecast from productivity figures.
Should junior developers use AI coding assistants?
The Microsoft Research experiments found that less experienced developers adopted the assistant more and saw greater gains, but that does not remove the need to learn how code works. Pair assistance with explanation, review, and tests so a faster draft does not become an unexamined dependency.
Can developers put proprietary code into an AI assistant?
That depends on the organization’s approved tool, contract, data-handling settings, and internal policy; the survey findings do not establish a universal safe setting. Before sharing non-public code, confirm what data may be submitted, how it is retained or used, and whether the tool is approved for that repository.
What is a better alternative to measuring AI adoption by generated lines of code?
Measure delivery and quality outcomes such as cycle time, escaped defects, change-failure rate, review load, reliability, and developer experience. Compare them with a baseline so increased activity is not mistaken for improved results.
