You can spot many AI-generated scams by slowing down, checking who is contacting you, inspecting every address and link, looking for audio or video inconsistencies, and verifying the request through a separate trusted channel. Do not send money, passwords or a multi-factor authentication code until that independent check confirms the person or organization.
Artificial intelligence can now produce convincing messages, social profiles, images, cloned voices, videos, fake identification and fraudulent websites at scale. The technology changes how believable a scam looks, but the pressure tactics remain familiar: urgency, secrecy, impersonation and a request for money or access.
What makes an AI-generated scam different from an ordinary scam?
AI lets a criminal create believable text, realistic photographs, voice clones and deepfake video quickly, then tailor each version to a target. A message may use a relative’s name, a manager’s writing style or a bank’s branding without coming from that person or institution.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation warned in 2025 that AI-generated content is often difficult to identify. That means visual “tells” can help, but no single glitch proves that content is genuine or fake. Your strongest protection is behavioral: stop the interaction, verify the identity independently and avoid payments or codes that are difficult to recover.

Why should you pause when a message creates urgency or secrecy?
Urgency is the first signal to slow down. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says impersonators create an emergency, push you to act quickly and ask for money or personal information; AI makes the familiar voice, face or writing style more persuasive.
Common pressure phrases
- “I need this in the next 10 minutes.”
- “Do not tell anyone—this is confidential.”
- “Your account will be closed unless you confirm now.”
- “I am in trouble; send a gift card or cryptocurrency immediately.”
Legitimate banks, employers and public agencies generally give you a way to pause and contact them through their established channels. A genuine family emergency also benefits from verification. Treat an unexpected demand for secrecy, a rushed transfer or a login code as unverified until you confirm it elsewhere.
How do you inspect the sender and account history?
Open the sender’s profile or account details without clicking its links. Thin history is a warning sign, especially when the account was created recently, has very few connections or posts generic comments that do not fit the claimed identity.
Profile checks that expose impersonation
- Compare the account name with the profile photograph and earlier posts.
- Look for an unusual spelling, extra punctuation or a name that does not match the person’s normal account.
- Check whether comments appear copied, automated or unrelated to the conversation.
- Notice whether the account suddenly asks to leave a protected platform for WhatsApp, Telegram or private email.
- Review whether the account has a plausible history with real interactions rather than a burst of recent activity.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service identifies thin profiles, mismatched names and pressure to move conversations off-platform as telltale characteristics. A long-standing account is not proof of safety—accounts can be taken over—but a new or inconsistent identity deserves a separate check before you reply.
What should you check in an email address, phone number or web link?
Read contact details character by character. Scammers often make a tiny alteration to a familiar name, domain or phone number that is easy to miss on a small screen.

Inspect the address itself
- Check the complete email address, not only the display name.
- Read the domain from right to left and watch for substituted letters, added words or an unfamiliar ending.
- Compare the phone number with one saved in your contacts; do not assume a caller-ID label is authentic.
- Hover over a link on a computer, or long-press it on a phone without opening it, to inspect its destination.
- Be wary of shortened links, unexpected attachments and login pages reached from a message.
The FBI warns that slight changes in names and contact information can support impersonation. If a message claims to be from a bank, agency or company, type its known website yourself or use a statement or card to find its official number. Do not use the link or callback number supplied in the suspicious message.
Which visual and video details can reveal synthetic media?
Look for several inconsistencies together rather than hunting for one “AI fingerprint.” FBI and Postal Inspection Service guidance lists distorted hands or feet, unrealistic teeth or eyes, indistinct faces, inaccurate shadows, odd glasses or jewelry, jerky motion, poor lighting, lag and lip-sync errors.

Still-image clues
- Hands, fingers, ears or teeth that change shape or number.
- Text on signs, badges or documents that is garbled or almost correct.
- Jewelry, glasses, hair or clothing that merges into the face or changes between frames.
- Shadows and reflections that point in conflicting directions.
Video clues
- The mouth moves out of time with the words, especially on hard consonants.
- Head movement looks jerky, while the background remains unnaturally still.
- Lighting on the face does not match the room or changes without a visible source.
- A watermark, compression pattern or sudden drop in quality appears around the face.
These are clues, not authentication. Real cameras produce blur, glare and compression, and high-quality synthetic media may avoid obvious artifacts. Use visual inspection to decide whether to stop and verify—not to authorize a payment.
How can a cloned voice or an out-of-character request expose a scam?
A short recording can be enough to synthesize a convincing version of someone’s voice. Listen for an unusual tone, word choice, timing, background noise, lag or a voice that does not quite match the person you know.
Use a safe challenge
Do not rely on questions whose answers are visible on social media. Instead, end the call and contact the person through a number you already trust. Families can agree on a private phrase or question for emergencies; the phrase should never be posted publicly or shared in the original suspicious conversation.

Even a perfect-sounding voice does not authorize a request for cash, credentials or a verification code. A familiar voice paired with an out-of-character demand is a reason to verify, not a reason to comply.

Independent verification means starting a new conversation using contact information you obtained before the incident. Replying to the suspicious message, clicking its link or calling the number it provides does not verify anything because the same scammer controls that channel.
- Stop responding and do not open further attachments.
- Find the organization’s number on a bank card, statement or official website you enter manually.
- Call the family member, colleague or manager at a known number, or begin a new conversation in an account you have used with them before.
- Describe the request without repeating sensitive information from the message.
- Ask the organization or person to confirm whether the request, payment destination and deadline are real.
Never provide a two-factor authentication code over email, text or an encrypted messaging app. A legitimate support worker should not need a one-time code that was sent to your device to “cancel” a transaction or restore an account.
Which payments and links should you refuse until verification is complete?
Stop when an unverified contact asks for gift cards, cryptocurrency, a wire transfer, a payment-app transfer or another hard-to-recover asset. These methods can move money quickly and may offer little practical recourse after the recipient receives it.
High-risk requests
- Buying gift cards and sending the numbers or photographs of the cards.
- Transferring cryptocurrency to a wallet supplied in a message.
- Wiring funds because a caller claims an account or family member is in immediate danger.
- Sending money through a payment app to a new username or phone number.
- Opening an attachment or signing in through a link before the sender is confirmed.
Do not “test” a suspicious link in a spare account. Malware, credential theft and tracking can begin before you enter a password. Report suspicious content to the platform and the appropriate authorities after preserving the message, account name, phone number, URLs and payment instructions.

What is the safest response when several warning signs appear?
Use the response that maximizes independent evidence and minimizes irreversible loss. The following matrix turns the experts’ guidance into a quick decision rule.
| Check | Lower-risk indication | Higher-risk indication | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verification route | You independently use a known number or website | You reply, click or call the supplied contact | End the original interaction and start a new one |
| Payment reversibility | No transfer has been made | Gift card, cryptocurrency or wire is demanded | Refuse until identity and purpose are confirmed |
| Identity evidence | Established contact history and matching details | Thin profile, mismatched name or altered domain | Verify with a separate trusted contact |
| Media consistency | Audio and video fit the person and setting | Artifacts, lag, odd lighting or lip-sync problems | Treat the request as unverified |
No row proves a scam by itself. Several high-risk indications together justify ending the conversation and reporting it, even if the message looks polished.
What should you do if you already clicked, shared a code or sent money?
Act immediately; speed now is about limiting damage, not obeying the scammer’s deadline. Stop communicating, save evidence and contact the affected service through an independently found channel.
- Tell your bank or payment provider that the transaction may be fraudulent and ask what recall or freeze options are available.
- Change a compromised password from a trusted device, beginning with the email account that can reset other accounts.
- Revoke unfamiliar sessions, review account recovery details and replace authentication methods if a code or token was exposed.
- Report the account, message or video to the platform and report suspected fraud to the relevant law-enforcement or consumer-protection authority in your country.
- Warn people who may receive a follow-up impersonation from the compromised account.
Keep the original message, headers, caller details, wallet address, payment receipt and screenshots. Do not forward a malicious link merely to show someone what happened; share the evidence through the reporting channel instead.

Not by itself. The FBI’s 2025 warning emphasizes that AI-generated content can be difficult to identify, and artifacts vary with the tool, file format and editing. A detector’s “real” result cannot prove that a person made the request, while a “synthetic” result does not tell you whether the request is malicious.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI detector prove that a photo, voice or video is a scam?
No. Detection tools can miss high-quality synthetic media and can flag edited but genuine material. Treat any result as a clue and verify the person or organization through contact information you obtained independently.
What secret phrase should a family use for an emergency call?
Choose a phrase that is memorable but not posted, shared in group chats or used as a password. Agree that a caller who cannot provide it must be verified by calling a known number, even if the voice sounds familiar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShould I call the phone number shown in a suspicious text?
No. Caller ID and in-message numbers can be controlled by the scammer. Find the organization’s number on a card, statement or website you enter yourself, then start a new call.
Is cryptocurrency safer than a wire transfer when someone claims to be in trouble?
Neither should be sent to an unverified contact. Both can be difficult to reverse, and a request to use either method is a reason to stop and confirm the identity through another channel.
