You usually cannot tell whether an image is AI-generated from one visual flaw or a detector result alone. Start by checking for visual inconsistencies, then inspect the original file’s provenance where available and search for earlier versions. Treat each clue as evidence to weigh—not a verdict—and combine independent checks before drawing conclusions.

What can tell you whether an image is AI-generated?

There is no universal visual test that reliably labels every image as AI-generated or human-made. Instead, look for several clues: details that do not make physical sense, provenance information in the original file, and earlier appearances that help establish where the image came from. These checks answer different questions. A visual artifact may raise suspicion; a signed provenance record can identify information about a file’s origin or history; a reverse search can reveal context and earlier versions.

None is a complete authenticity guarantee. A real photograph can have unusual details, while an AI-generated image may look convincing. Provenance can be absent, and provider-specific verifiers do not cover every image generator. For a consequential decision, seek multiple kinds of evidence and the earliest trustworthy source you can find.

What are the six signs to check?

Use these checks as a sequence, moving from what you can see to what you can verify about the file and its history. A single oddity is weak evidence; multiple independent clues deserve closer investigation.

1. Look for visual inconsistencies

Scan the whole image before focusing on a suspicious spot. Google’s guidance names garbled text, errors in hands and teeth, inconsistent shadows or lighting, and unnatural repetition as possible clues. Look at boundaries where objects meet: an edge that seems to melt into its background, for example, may be worth inspecting more closely.

These are warning signs rather than proof. A photograph can contain blur, distortion, or an unusual expression without being AI-generated. Ask whether the questionable detail is truly inconsistent with the rest of the scene, and whether a second check supports the same interpretation.

2. Zoom in on lettering and fine detail

Enlarge signs, labels, logos, jewelry, fingers, teeth, and tiny background objects. Check whether letters form recognizable words and whether small features remain coherent rather than changing shape or blending together. Compare multiple examples of the same kind of object if they appear in the scene.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Magnification helps you inspect details; it does not turn an artifact into a reliable detector. A compressed or low-resolution image may make genuine details look malformed. If the image is a screenshot or a small copy, note that limitation rather than treating every unclear feature as evidence of generation.

3. Check whether lighting, shadows, and reflections agree

Pick out the apparent light sources and follow their effects through the scene. Do highlights point in compatible directions? Do shadows fall in a way that fits those lights? Do reflections correspond to the objects and surroundings they are supposed to reflect? Also consider perspective and contact: an object should appear to sit on, rest against, or cast a shadow onto nearby surfaces in a way that makes physical sense.

Google specifically identifies inconsistent shadows and lighting as visual clues. One mismatch may have an ordinary explanation, but several unrelated mismatches can strengthen a concern. Compare the elements with one another instead of judging a shadow or reflection in isolation.

4. Look for repeated or implausible patterns

Check backgrounds and groups for repeated faces, leaves, windows, textures, or accessories. Repetition is more suspicious when it looks too regular, or when apparently matching objects change details between instances. Ask whether the repetition fits the scene: similar windows on a building are expected, but nearly identical details in places where they should differ may warrant a closer look.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repetition alone does not establish that an image is synthetic. Real scenes contain repeated patterns, and perspective or image quality can make details hard to distinguish. Treat this as corroborating evidence alongside other clues.

5. Inspect the original file’s metadata and Content Credentials

If you can obtain the original image file, check whether it contains EXIF information such as a camera model, date, or camera settings, as well as traces of editing software. This information may help you understand the file’s history, but metadata can be stripped. An image with no metadata is not thereby proven to be AI-generated or human-made.

Content Credentials use C2PA provenance information to show a signed origin and edit history when those records are present and valid. Google may surface compatible C2PA information in its “About this image” feature. Google Search Central describes requirements for displaying C2PA metadata, including C2PA version 2.1 or later and a certificate from a Certification Authority on the C2PA Trust List. A credential can help establish information about a file and its history; it does not certify that the depicted event is true or that the person sharing the image has the right to use it.

When checking credentials, keep the distinction clear: a signed record is evidence about the file or provenance chain described by that record. It is not a general certificate of truth, ownership, or context. The absence of a credential also says little by itself because provenance information may not be present in the copy you have.

6. Search for earlier appearances and use supported verifiers

Run a reverse-image search to look for earlier appearances, related versions, or a source that gives the image context. This may help establish when and where a version appeared, but it does not certify who made it. Compare the actual images and their surrounding context rather than assuming that the first result is the original or authoritative source.

Some services can check provenance signals associated with particular providers. Google Gemini can check Google SynthID and compatible Content Credentials. OpenAI’s verifier checks supported OpenAI provenance signals. Microsoft’s documentation cautions that its detector does not identify all AI-generated content. These are scoped checks, not universal detectors: a result from one provider’s tool does not establish whether an image made by an unsupported system is AI-generated.

How should you use an AI-image checker?

Choose a verifier based on the evidence you want it to inspect. A provider’s watermark check, a signed C2PA record, a reverse search, and a visual review are not interchangeable. The official guidance for these tools stresses that their results need to be interpreted within a broader review.

Check What it can help establish Coverage and limits
Google Gemini Google SynthID and compatible Content Credentials, according to Google’s guidance. Provider signals and supported credentials; not a universal AI-image detector. Google’s guidance describes compatible C2PA information appearing in “About this image” as well.
OpenAI’s verifier Supported OpenAI provenance signals. It does not currently detect content generated by another company’s AI model. OpenAI says a not_detected result does not rule out such content.
Microsoft’s detector A check for provenance information recognized by that detector. Microsoft says it does not identify all AI-generated content; no universal coverage is established by that statement.
Reverse-image search Earlier appearances, similar versions, or possible source context. It can help investigate context, but does not certify authorship or establish that an image is genuine.
Visual inspection Possible inconsistencies in details, lighting, shadows, and repeated patterns. Clues can be ambiguous and are not proof on their own.

File-size and file-type limits, screenshot resilience, and the full provider coverage of these services are not established in the official guidance described here. Do not assume that a tool accepts every kind of image or preserves the same evidence after an image has been transformed.

What does a positive or negative result actually mean?

A positive supported watermark or valid signed provenance record is meaningful evidence about the file or provider named by that signal. Interpret it narrowly: it indicates what that record or signal supports, not that every visual element is accurate, that the image is legally owned, or that it is being shared in the right context.

A negative result is not the opposite kind of proof. OpenAI says a not_detected result does not rule out content from another company’s AI model. Microsoft likewise says that detecting no provenance information does not necessarily mean the content was not AI-generated. A missing or unrecognized signal may simply be outside what the verifier can check.

Image changes can also affect provenance checks. OpenAI notes that cropping, screenshots, compression, conversion, or metadata removal can weaken or erase signals. If possible, check the original file rather than a copy that has passed through several apps or platforms. If only a transformed copy is available, report the limits of that result.

Content Credentials should be read as information about origin and history, not a blanket authenticity seal. Google describes them as a way to help provide information about origin, history, and whether AI tools were used. Pair that information with visual inspection and source research.

  1. Preserve the copy you received. Keep track of whether you are examining an original file, a download, or a screenshot. That distinction matters because transformations may remove or weaken provenance signals.
  2. Inspect the scene as a whole. Note possible issues with anatomy, text, edges, lighting, reflections, and repeated patterns. Record what looks inconsistent instead of immediately labeling the image.
  3. Enlarge the questionable details. Check whether the apparent flaw remains visible and coherent when magnified. Consider whether low resolution or compression could explain it.
  4. Check provenance if the file supports it. Look for available metadata and valid Content Credentials. Interpret any record as information about the file’s stated origin and history—not as proof of the depicted event.
  5. Search for earlier versions and context. Use reverse-image search to find prior appearances or related versions. Check the source and context rather than treating a matching result as confirmation by itself.
  6. Use a provider verifier only for the signal it supports. A compatible result can be useful; a negative result does not exclude content from unsupported providers or prove human creation.
  7. Weigh the independent evidence. For a high-stakes decision, combine the checks and seek the earliest trustworthy source available. If the evidence remains inconclusive, say so rather than presenting a guess as a finding.

What common mistakes lead to a false conclusion?

  • Treating one strange feature as a verdict. A malformed-looking hand, sign, or shadow is a clue to investigate, not proof of an AI origin.
  • Reading a missing credential as evidence of human creation. Metadata can be stripped, and tools only recognize the provenance signals they support.
  • Using one provider’s result as a universal answer. Provider-specific verifiers cannot be assumed to cover every image generator.
  • Confusing provenance with truth. A record about origin or editing does not establish that the image depicts a real event or that its caption is accurate.
  • Assuming reverse search proves authorship. Earlier appearances help build context; they do not, on their own, identify the creator.
  • Ignoring the file’s condition. A screenshot, compressed image, or converted copy may not retain signals present in the original.

Can you get a reliable accuracy percentage for these checks?

The official sources described here do not provide a directly applicable consumer accuracy rate, prevalence figure, or false-positive rate for identifying AI-generated images. That means there is no supported percentage to use as a universal confidence score. Treat tool results as scoped evidence and visual observations as clues, then explain what each check did—and did not—establish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI-generated image contain real details from a real place?

Yes. Recognizable buildings, objects, or people in an image do not by themselves establish how the image was made. Verify the specific image’s provenance and context rather than inferring its origin from familiar content.

Can I use an AI-image checker result as proof in a dispute?

A provider-specific signal may be relevant evidence, but its scope matters: it speaks to the signal the verifier supports, not necessarily the image’s full history or the truth of its subject. Preserve the file and explain the tool’s limits instead of presenting a result as a universal finding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if visual clues and provenance information disagree?

Keep the two findings separate and look for an earlier, trustworthy source or an original file that can clarify the discrepancy. A signed history can inform provenance while a visual inconsistency still deserves investigation; neither automatically cancels out the other.
