Use AI as a coding assistant, not as proof that a Verse mechanic works. In UEFN, ask Epic Developer Assistant (online or inside UEFN) for an explanation or a small Verse draft, or connect a compatible agent through the beta UEFN MCP integration for project-aware editing and editor actions. Then review the code, run Verse > Build Verse Code, place and configure the resulting Verse device, launch a Fortnite session, trigger the behavior, and inspect the logs. A generated answer, a successful compile, and a passing gameplay test are three different results.
This workflow covers both AI routes, the exact UEFN steps, prompt patterns, device wiring, session testing, update commands, and recovery when code compiles but appears to do nothing.
What can AI actually do for Verse in Fortnite UEFN?
AI can explain Verse APIs, turn a precise mechanic into a first draft, suggest a small correction from a compiler diagnostic, and—when connected through UEFN MCP—work with supported project and editor operations. It cannot make an unreviewed script safe, infer every device assignment in your level, or prove that a mechanic behaves correctly for every player and event sequence.
Epic documents two distinct routes:
- Epic Developer Assistant: a guidance-and-generation service available online and within UEFN. It can answer Verse questions, produce examples, and give step-by-step instructions. It is the simplest route when you want an explanation or a draft and will perform the editor work yourself. Epic Developer tools
- UEFN MCP: a beta integration that lets a compatible AI agent interact with supported UEFN tools. Depending on the supported operation and your setup, the agent can read or edit project Verse, compile, work with devices, and interact with play sessions. Epic announced it on August 20, 2026 and warns that it is still beta. UEFN MCP documentation Epic’s announcement
Do not treat these as interchangeable. Developer Assistant supplies knowledge and draft text; MCP adds project and editor access but requires setup, a compatible agent, and careful review. Epic lists compatible-agent examples rather than requiring one exclusive vendor.

Which AI route should you choose?
Choose the route that matches the action you need. Start with Developer Assistant for a self-contained question, a first draft, or guided learning. Consider UEFN MCP when the agent must inspect your project, edit files, compile, or perform supported editor and session actions.
| Need | Best starting route | What you still do |
|---|---|---|
| Understand an event, function, or device API | Epic Developer Assistant | Check the answer against your project and documentation. |
| Generate a small, isolated Verse device | Developer Assistant or MCP | Review imports, names, event assumptions, and behavior. |
| Read existing project Verse and make a targeted edit | UEFN MCP, if configured | Approve the diff and verify the correct file and device. |
| Compile and work with supported editor operations | UEFN MCP, if configured | Confirm the build result in UEFN; an agent report is not evidence by itself. |
| Run a real Fortnite play session | UEFN’s Launch Session workflow, optionally assisted by MCP | Trigger the mechanic and observe the client and logs yourself. |
Keep the first change small enough that you can explain every changed line. A one-event log message is a better starting point than asking an agent to redesign an entire game system.
How should you prepare a Verse task for AI?
Give the model a narrow requirement, the project context it is allowed to use, and an observable acceptance condition. Vague prompts produce plausible-looking code that may compile while targeting the wrong device or event.

- Describe the trigger. Identify the event, such as round start, a button interaction, a player entering a zone, or an elimination.
- Describe the observable result. Say exactly what should appear, move, enable, disable, or be logged.
- List relevant devices and references. Include the names of placed Creative devices and any existing
@editablefields. - Set boundaries. Ask for the smallest reviewable edit, no unrelated refactor, and an explanation of changed lines.
- Separate build and gameplay claims. Ask the agent to report compilation separately and never to claim that gameplay passed without an observed session.
A useful starting prompt is:
“In my existing Verse device, add a log message when the round starts. Explain the changed lines, compile the project, and report the build result. Do not claim gameplay passed. Keep the edit limited to this device.”
This mirrors the type of round-start logging and compile task described in Epic’s UEFN MCP guidance. For a new mechanic, add the exact expected result and the device references it must use.
How do you create the Verse file that becomes a gameplay device?
A Verse source file is not automatically a device in your level. Create a Verse Device, build it, and then place the resulting device instance in the level.

The example demonstrates the shape of a device and an OnBegin entry point; it is not a promise that every project’s required behavior is covered. Ask the assistant to adapt imports, signatures, and event subscriptions to the API version and devices in your project.
What should you review in AI-generated Verse before compiling?
Read the generated code as if it were an untrusted code review. Look for correctness at four levels: syntax, API assumptions, level wiring, and gameplay behavior.
Syntax and structure
- Confirm the class is a Verse device when it must be placed in the world.
- Check indentation, effect annotations, access modifiers, and parameter types.
- Remove unused imports and unrelated helper code.
- Make sure the agent edited the intended file rather than creating a duplicate class with a similar name.
API and event assumptions
- Verify that the event or function exists for the device type you are using.
- Check whether an operation is immediate or suspends, and whether the function’s effects match the call site.
- Confirm subscriptions are made once and are not accidentally repeated every time an event fires.
- Ask the assistant to explain any API it introduced instead of accepting a guessed method name.
References and level wiring
- Find every
@editablefield and determine which placed device must be assigned to it. - Check that a reference’s type matches the intended Creative device.
- Do not assume that constructing or initializing a reference in code points to a particular device in your level.
- Ensure optional references have a deliberate fallback or an explicit failure message.
Behavior and scope
- Compare the code with the acceptance condition in your prompt.
- Look for repeated triggers, multiple players, late joiners, and reset behavior where those cases matter.
- Reject unrelated formatting or architecture changes in a first iteration.
- Ask the model to identify what the code does not handle.
AI can explain a compile error, but always provide the exact diagnostic and surrounding code. Do not paraphrase a message if you can paste it accurately; a small wording change can send the model toward the wrong fix.
How do you compile Verse correctly in UEFN?
Save the file, then run Verse > Build Verse Code in UEFN. The build result is the authoritative check for that compilation, not a green syntax hint in the editor.
- Save all modified Verse files.
- In UEFN, select Verse > Build Verse Code.
- Read the Message Log and Output Log, including the first error in the chain. Later errors can be consequences of the first one.
- If the build fails, send the actual diagnostic, file name, and relevant lines to the AI and request the smallest correction.
- Apply the correction, save, and build again.
Epic says the bundled Verse VS Code extension is the only officially supported Verse language extension and warns that editor diagnostics can miss compiler errors. Treat squiggles and autocomplete as convenience signals; use the UEFN build command for the real check. Epic’s first Verse program guide

Record the result in two separate statements: “Build succeeded” or the exact compiler failure, and “Gameplay behavior observed” or “Not yet tested.” Never merge those conclusions.
How do you place and wire the generated Verse device?
After a successful build, the Verse class appears as a placeable device. Drag it into the level and assign any editable references in its Details panel.
- Find the built Verse device in the Content Browser or device list.
- Drag an instance into the level. A source file sitting in Verse Explorer is not enough.
- Select the placed instance and open its Details panel.
- For each
@editableproperty, select the intended device from the level or use the picker supported by that property. - Check that the assigned device is the correct instance, not a similarly named copy in another area.
- Save the level and note any device settings that affect the test.
Epic’s barrier-device example illustrates a common failure: a reference that looks initialized in code does not automatically identify the desired device placed in your level. If an editable field is blank or points to the wrong instance, the script can compile and still have no visible effect. Device placement and configuration guidance
How do you test a Verse mechanic in a real Fortnite session?
Run the mechanic through UEFN’s Fortnite client workflow. Text-editor execution is not a substitute for a session because devices, level state, replication, and player actions only exist in the running experience.
- With the level and placed device configured, select Launch Session.
- Wait for the Fortnite client session to connect.
- Select Start Game when the session is ready.
- Perform the exact trigger in your acceptance condition: start the round, interact with the button, enter the zone, or perform the relevant player action.
- Observe the visible result and any expected state change.
- Read the in-game Log and UEFN Output Log. A
Print()message can appear in-game and in the Output Log. - Compare what happened with the prompt’s expected result. Record what was observed, not what the AI predicted.
For the round logger example, a successful check requires both a started round and the expected log message. If the message appears but the mechanic does not, the logging path works while the gameplay path still needs diagnosis.
Which update command should you use after an edit?
Use the update that matches what changed, then repeat the relevant observed test.

|---|---|---|
| Only Verse source code changed during an active session | Build, then use Push Verse Changes | Updates Verse-file changes without treating unrelated level edits as part of the push. |
| Placed devices, level content, or device properties changed too | Use Push Changes | Sends the broader level and device state to the session. |

What should your Verse test matrix include?
A compact matrix prevents a green build from being mistaken for a working feature.
| Layer | Question | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Build | Did Build Verse Code succeed? | UEFN build result plus Message Log or Output Log diagnostics. |
| Placement and wiring | Is the Verse device actually in the level, and do editable references identify the intended devices? | Placed instance in the Outliner and populated Details fields. |
| Happy path | Does the specified event produce the expected visible and logged result? | Observed client behavior and matching log entries. |
| Failure path | What happens when a referenced device is absent or configured differently? | A controlled session observation and an actionable log or fallback. |
| Repeated and multiplayer behavior | Does the mechanic remain correct after repeated triggers or with the relevant number of players? | Separate observations for each case required by the design. |
| After changes | Did the correct push update reach the session? | Build or push result followed by a repeat of the triggering interaction. |
The failure and multiplayer rows are recommended test cases, not claims that Epic ran them or that a particular AI-generated script passes them. Tailor the matrix to the mechanic: a one-time round message may not need the same cases as a replicated inventory interaction.
How do you debug a Verse script that compiles but does nothing?
Work from the outside of the system inward. Most “nothing happened” reports are caused by a missing placed device, an unassigned editable reference, an event that never fires in the chosen state, or a log message that was not checked in the correct place.
- Confirm the running build. Save, build again, and use the proper push or relaunch action. A session can still contain an older version.
- Confirm placement. Verify that an instance of the Verse device is in the current level and enabled for the session.
- Confirm references. Inspect every editable field in Details and verify the exact level instance.
- Prove initialization. Add a temporary
Print()in the device’s startup path. If it never appears, investigate placement, startup timing, or the session itself before debugging the later event. - Prove the trigger. Add a second temporary log immediately before the event-handling code. If it does not appear, the subscription or event assumptions are wrong.
- Inspect state and branches. Log the values used in conditions, while avoiding sensitive or excessive output.
- Trace the call route. Epic documents
PrintCallStack()for tracing the route to a problem. Use it when nested calls make the origin unclear. - Check runtime reports. Epic documents runtime-error categories and call stacks in the Verse tab of the Content Service Portal. Reports are retained for up to 30 days; that is a retention limit, not a measure of AI accuracy. Epic’s Verse reference and diagnostics documentation
Remove temporary logs after the behavior is understood or gate them behind a development option. Prefer concise, identifiable messages so repeated events can be distinguished in the Output Log.

How is UEFN MCP different from asking an AI to write code?
MCP changes the agent’s operating context. Instead of receiving only a pasted question and returning text, a configured agent can use supported UEFN tools to inspect project Verse, edit it, compile, work with devices, and interact with play sessions. The integration still does not turn the agent into an infallible tester.

Plan for these boundaries:
- It is beta. Epic’s announcement states:
Unreal MCP in UEFN is in beta, so expect some rough edges and more capabilities on the way.
- Tool calls may cause editor hitching, according to Epic’s documentation.
- Not every general Unreal MCP toolset is compatible with UEFN.
- Capabilities depend on the compatible agent, its connection, permissions, and the supported UEFN operation.
- An agent’s “compiled” or “passed” message must be checked against UEFN’s own build output and an observed Fortnite session.
Keep MCP edits small, reviewable, and reversible. Ask the agent to show the files and lines it changed, name the build action it performed, and distinguish an automated report from a gameplay observation. If the connection fails, use the documented connection or client logs where appropriate, then perform the editor and session checks manually.
What are the safest prompt and iteration habits?
- One behavior per request: implement one trigger and one result before adding polish.
- State invariants: say what must not change, such as existing device names, score rules, or reset behavior.
- Request a diff: require a file path, changed lines, and a short reason for each change.
- Feed real diagnostics: paste the compiler message and current code rather than asking the model to guess.
- Use explicit acceptance tests: define the player action, expected visible result, and expected log message.
- Separate responsibilities: let AI draft and explain; let UEFN compile; let the session demonstrate behavior.
- Keep a rollback point: save a known-good version before accepting a larger edit.
- Limit permissions: when using an editor-connected agent, grant only the project access and operations needed for the task.
A practical second prompt after a failed build is: “Here is the complete UEFN compiler diagnostic and the current file. Identify the smallest change that addresses this diagnostic, explain why, and do not alter unrelated code. After the edit, report only whether the build was requested; do not claim the gameplay behavior passed.”
Can AI replace Verse knowledge or manual playtesting?
No. AI lowers the cost of exploring an API and drafting repetitive code, but you still need enough Verse and UEFN understanding to recognize a wrong event, an unassigned device, a race condition, or a multiplayer assumption. Manual playtesting remains necessary because compilation checks language and type correctness, not the complete runtime interaction in your level.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Epic Developer Assistant without connecting an AI agent to my UEFN project?
Yes. Epic documents Developer Assistant as an online and in-UEFN guidance-and-generation route, so you can ask questions or request a draft and then perform the file, build, placement, and session steps yourself. Project-aware editing and supported editor operations are the reason to consider the separate UEFN MCP route.
Why does my Verse device appear in the project but not affect the level?
A Verse source file does not create a placed gameplay instance by itself. After building, drag the generated Verse device into the level and populate its editable fields in the Details panel; references that look initialized in code do not automatically select a particular level device.
Where can I find Verse runtime errors after a session?
Use the in-game Log and UEFN Output Log for messages such as those produced by Print(). Epic also documents runtime-error categories and call stacks in the Verse tab of the Content Service Portal, with reports retained for up to 30 days.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo I have to install a separate Verse language extension for VS Code?
Use the Verse extension bundled with UEFN. Epic identifies that bundled extension as the only officially supported Verse language extension and warns that editor diagnostics can miss errors, so always run Verse > Build Verse Code.
