Yes, attackers can use generative AI to make a fake payment request look and sound authentic. They can produce polished emails, realistic invoices and profile images, cloned voices, and synthetic video. Those details demonstrate only that content was generated or copied well; they do not prove who is asking. Treat any unexpected request to send money, change bank details, buy gift cards, alter payroll, or disclose an authentication code as unverified until you confirm it through a contact method you already trust.

The safest response is procedural: pause, stop using the incoming message, call a known number, confirm the beneficiary and amount through a second channel, and obtain a second approver for high-risk payments. If money or credentials have already been sent, contact the bank or payment provider immediately and preserve all evidence.

Is a realistic payment request proof that it came from the stated person?

No. Realistic language, a familiar logo, a caller who sounds like an executive, or a video that appears to show a relative are all claims of identity, not proof of identity. Generative AI lets criminals create convincing text, images, audio, and video at scale, while stolen personal information supplies the context that makes the request feel familiar.

The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) says criminals use generative artificial intelligence to make social-engineering and financial-fraud schemes more believable. Its 3 December 2024 warning states: “Criminals use generative artificial intelligence (AI) to commit fraud on a larger scale which increases the believability of their schemes.”

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That means visual or conversational “common sense” checks are no longer sufficient. Identity must be established outside the message or call that is asking for payment.

How are attackers using AI to make payment scams convincing?

Polished business email and invoices

AI can remove spelling and grammar errors, translate a message, imitate a company’s tone, and format a professional-looking invoice. A criminal can combine scraped details about a project, supplier, travel schedule, or executive with a familiar signature and logo. The result may look more credible than a genuine hurried email.

Common requests include changing a vendor’s bank account, sending an urgent wire, paying a first-time beneficiary, buying gift cards, or moving payroll to a new account. The wording can be formal and internally consistent while the destination account belongs to the attacker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloned voices and synthetic video

Voice-cloning tools can imitate a family member, manager, or senior executive. Synthetic video can add a face to a video call or recorded message. A caller may know the target’s name, workplace, travel plans, or relatives because those details were posted publicly or obtained in an earlier compromise.

Do not treat a voice or video as a second factor. End the conversation and initiate a fresh call using a number in your address book, contract, bank statement, employee directory, or the organization’s official website. For family emergencies, a prearranged secret word or phrase is a practical additional check.

Impersonation of financial support

Fraudsters can pose as a bank or payment-platform support agent and claim that an account is under attack. They may ask you to “secure” it by moving funds, approving a login, reading out an MFA code, or installing software. The FBI has separately warned about account-takeover fraud in which criminals impersonate financial-institution support.

How large is the AI-enabled fraud problem?

The FBI’s 2025 IC3 Annual Report recorded 22,364 AI-related complaints and $893,346,472 in adjusted losses. Those totals cover AI-related complaints broadly, not only fake payment requests, so they should not be read as a prevalence rate for this specific scam. They do show why a realistic message deserves a controlled verification process rather than an instant response.

Figure What it represents Qualification
22,364 AI-related complaints Reported in the FBI IC3 2025 Annual Report
$893,346,472 Adjusted losses tied to those AI-related complaints Reported in the same 2025 report; not limited to payment-request scams

What warning signs should make me pause?

One signal can be benign, but several together justify stopping the transaction. Look for:

  • Pressure to act immediately, secrecy about the request, or a claim that normal approval is unavailable.
  • A new payee, changed bank details, a different payment app handle, or an unfamiliar account number.
  • A request to bypass procurement, payroll, a co-signer, or a family verification routine.
  • A demand for an MFA code, password, recovery code, or remote-access installation.
  • Instructions to use the phone number, reply address, link, attachment, or QR code contained in the request.
  • A request for gift cards, cryptocurrency, cash couriers, or a transfer to a “temporary” or “safe” account.
  • A voice, video, or writing style that seems familiar but is paired with an unusual payment destination.

AI may eliminate obvious spelling mistakes, so grammar is not a reliable authenticity test. Focus on the requested action, destination, urgency, and whether the request fits an established process.

How do I verify an urgent invoice or bank-detail change?

Use an out-of-band verification sequence. Do not continue the conversation through the channel that delivered the request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pause the transaction. Do not click a link, open an attachment, approve a login, read out a code, or send a “small test” payment while checking the request.
  2. Stop replying and hang up. Treat the incoming phone number, email address, reply path, and supplied URL as untrusted.
  3. Choose a known contact route. Call the vendor using the number in an existing contract or your address book; call a colleague using the employee directory; use a bank number printed on a card or statement; or type the organization’s official web address yourself.
  4. Confirm every payment detail. Have the independent contact confirm the amount, beneficiary name, account number or payment handle, purpose, and deadline. For a bank-detail change, compare the new details with the last approved record and verify the change with the vendor through a second channel.
  5. Obtain independent approval. A second authorized person should review first-time payees, changed account details, urgent wires, payroll changes, and gift-card purchases before release.
  6. Document the confirmation. Record who verified the request, which known number or directory was used, and the exact beneficiary details approved. Keep the original message separately as evidence.

If the requester objects to a callback, insists that the matter is secret, or says normal controls must be skipped, stop. Those objections increase the risk rather than proving legitimacy.

Which payments should require dual approval?

Dual authorization is a simple control against a single compromised mailbox, phone, or conversation. The second approver should use independent information, not merely forward the same message.

Payment or change Minimum control
First-time payee Independent beneficiary confirmation and a second authorized approver
Changed vendor bank details Callback to a known vendor contact, comparison with prior records, and dual approval
Urgent wire Out-of-band confirmation of amount and destination plus dual authorization
Payroll account or direct-deposit change Employee confirmation through a known channel and second-person review
Gift-card purchase requested by an executive or manager Independent confirmation of the request and second approval before buying or sending codes

Configure payment systems so a requester cannot both create a new beneficiary and release the payment. Set a cooling-off period for material bank-detail changes when your banking platform allows it.

How should I protect email, banking, payroll, and administrator accounts?

Turn on multifactor authentication

Enable two-factor or multifactor authentication (MFA) for email, online banking, payroll, cloud-administrator, and payment-platform accounts. Never share an MFA code with someone who calls, texts, or emails you. A code request can be the final step in an account-takeover attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prefer a phishing-resistant security key where supported

A FIDO2/WebAuthn security key is a physical MFA option supported by many services. It verifies the legitimate website or application as part of sign-in, making it harder for a fraudulent login page to capture a reusable code. Check that your bank, payroll provider, email service, or administrator console supports FIDO2/WebAuthn before purchasing a key.

Reduce the damage from stolen passwords

  • Use a unique, long password for every important account and store it in a reputable password manager.
  • Change a password immediately if it was entered into a suspicious page, and change every other account that reused it.
  • Revoke active sessions and review recovery email addresses, phone numbers, forwarding rules, and newly added devices after a suspected compromise.
  • Use bookmarks or a manually typed address for financial logins instead of links in messages.
  • Turn on transaction and login alerts so an unexpected beneficiary, transfer, or sign-in is visible quickly.

MFA cannot save an account when a user enters credentials into a fraudulent login page and then approves the attacker’s prompt. Independent navigation and careful approval remain necessary.

What should I do if I clicked a link or opened an attachment?

Separate a possible malware incident from a credential-phishing incident, and act quickly on both.

What should I do if money or credentials were already sent?

  1. Contact the financial institution or payment provider immediately. Request a recall, reversal, or fraud hold and provide the transaction time, amount, beneficiary, and destination account or handle. Speed can affect what recovery options remain.
  2. Secure exposed accounts. Reset credentials, change reused passwords, revoke active sessions, and replace compromised recovery methods. Prioritize email because it can be used to reset other accounts.
  3. Notify the impersonated organization. Tell the real vendor, employer, bank, or family member so it can warn other targets and protect the genuine account.
  4. Preserve evidence. Keep the original email, complete headers, text messages, audio or video files, phone numbers, URLs, invoices, payment instructions, and transaction records. Save them in their original form and note dates and time zones.
  5. Report to IC3. File a detailed complaint with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, including payment dates, amounts, receiving accounts, contact details, and how the request was delivered. Also follow any reporting requirements from your bank, employer, or local law-enforcement agency.

Do not negotiate with the attacker or pay an additional “recovery” fee. A second request often targets people who have already disclosed that they are vulnerable.

How should organizations design a process that AI impersonation cannot easily bypass?

Make the safe path the fastest path

Publish a single internal procedure for verifying payment changes, with known phone numbers and role-based contacts. Staff should not have to search an email thread for the correct number while under pressure. Require that a changed bank account remain pending until the independent callback and second approval are recorded.

Separate duties and monitor exceptions

Give different people responsibility for requesting, approving, and releasing a high-risk payment. Alert on new beneficiaries, unusual amounts, after-hours wires, payroll changes, and attempts to disable MFA. Review exceptions rather than allowing “urgent” to become a permanent bypass.

Train for voice and video, not only email

Exercises should include a cloned voice, a synthetic video meeting, a realistic invoice, and a support call requesting an MFA code. Teach employees to end the interaction and call back through a known channel. For family-facing organizations, a secret phrase can be part of the emergency protocol.

Where do these scams appear most often?

Setting Typical request Best independent check
Consumer payment app Urgent transfer, account “verification,” or request to move funds Open the app directly and contact support using its published route
Business email compromise Executive asks for a wire or vendor asks to change bank details Known-number callback, beneficiary comparison, and dual approval
Payroll Employee or payroll administrator requests a new direct-deposit account Confirm with the employee through an established channel and require second review
Bank-support impersonation “Safe account” transfer, MFA code, or remote-access request End the call and initiate contact through the card, statement, or official app
Family distress scam Relative supposedly needs immediate money Call the relative or another family member independently and use a secret phrase

Can a cloned voice or deepfake video approve a payment?

No. A cloned voice or deepfake video can make a request persuasive, but it cannot establish authorization. Payment approval should come from your organization’s documented workflow, a known callback, and an independent approver—not from the apparent realism of the person on screen.

When a request arrives during a live call, tell the caller you will call back. Use a different device or a separately sourced number when practical, then confirm the exact destination and amount before approving anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can caller ID prove that a payment request is genuine?

No. Caller ID identifies the displayed number, not the person controlling the call. Treat an incoming number as a lead only, end the call, and initiate contact using a number you obtained independently.

Should I send a small test payment to check a new account?

No. A test transfer can still go to the attacker and may signal that your organization is willing to bypass controls. Verify the beneficiary and account details before any amount is released.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What evidence is most useful when reporting an AI impersonation scam?

Provide original messages and full email headers, the phone numbers and account handles used, preserved audio or video, invoices, URLs, transaction identifiers, dates, amounts, and the receiving account information. Keep files unedited so investigators can examine their metadata and sequence.

How can families prepare for a fake emergency call?

Agree in advance on a secret phrase and a second person to contact. Keep current phone numbers in an address book, and make a rule that emergency money requests are verified through that independent contact before payment.
