To reduce hallucinations, turn on search or grounding for questions that need current information, give the AI authoritative source material when the answer must stay within a defined evidence base, and ask for citations beside factual claims. Then open the sources and check whether they actually support the claims. These settings improve freshness and traceability; they do not guarantee accuracy. For important figures, quotations, legal or policy statements, and publishable copy, a person still needs to verify the answer.

What do AI fact-checking settings actually change?

Search, grounding, attached files, and citation requests change the information available to an AI assistant and make its answer easier to inspect. They do not turn the assistant into an independent fact-checker. A model may retrieve relevant material and still misread it, combine it incorrectly, rely on an outdated source, or make a claim the source does not support.

That distinction matters because fluent, confident wording is not evidence. OpenAI’s Help Center says ChatGPT can be helpful but is not always right, and warns that it may fabricate citations, studies, or quotes. A citation is therefore a path to evidence, not proof that the answer is correct. You need to check the source itself, its date, and the connection between the source and the particular claim.

The practical goal is not to make a model promise it will never be wrong. It is to make unsupported claims easier to spot, reduce reliance on stale built-in knowledge when freshness matters, and create a review process that catches errors before they affect a decision or publication.

When should I turn on search or grounding?

Use search or grounding when an answer depends on recent developments, niche facts, or information that may have changed since the model learned it. For a stable, general explanation, web retrieval may add little; for current rules, product capabilities, or recent events, it can provide sources the model may not otherwise have.

“Grounding” generally means connecting an answer to retrieved information or supplied material. The exact feature and available controls vary by assistant, plan, and workspace configuration, so check the product’s current settings rather than assuming every account has the same option.

  • Use search or web grounding for current events, changing product details, recent policies, or specialized facts that need external references.
  • Use a supplied file or authoritative link when the answer should be limited to a specific document, such as a policy, report, contract, or approved set of guidance.
  • Use neither as a substitute for judgment. Search results can be partial, irrelevant, old, or misleading, and the assistant can still misstate what it finds.

Google’s Gemini documentation describes grounding as a way to draw on real-time sources beyond a model’s knowledge cutoff. This can help with freshness, but a recent result is not automatically an authoritative or relevant one. A search result’s date, publisher, and fit to the question still matter.

Which AI tools have search or grounding options?

Availability depends on the product and the account using it. The guidance below reflects the documented availability described by the respective providers; it is not a guarantee that a control will appear in every region, plan, or managed workspace.

Assistant Relevant documented option Availability qualification
ChatGPT Search and Deep Research can provide web-based information. Availability depends on plan.
Claude Search is available in some configurations. Availability depends on plan and workspace configuration.
Gemini The Gemini API offers Google Search grounding. The cited guidance concerns the API; do not assume the same controls or setup in every Gemini product.
Microsoft Copilot Answers may use web information, work data, or attached content. What it can use depends on license and administrator settings.

Microsoft’s guidance is especially relevant in managed work environments: the answer may draw from different information sources depending on the license and admin configuration. If you need to know whether an answer came from public web material, organizational data, or an attachment, inspect the product’s displayed sources and your organization’s configuration instead of inferring the source from the answer’s tone.

How do I keep an answer within a trusted source set?

Provide the current authoritative material and tell the assistant explicitly what it may use. Microsoft recommends attaching a file, providing a link, or giving a direction such as “Use this file only.” For this to work well, the source must be the right document and the current version; grounding in an obsolete file can produce a traceable but outdated answer.

  1. Choose the controlling source. Prefer the original policy, official notice, primary document, or current file that governs the question. If multiple documents apply, identify which one takes precedence.
  2. Supply the source. Attach the file or provide its link in the assistant’s interface, if supported. For work that must rely only on one document, say so directly rather than merely asking the assistant to “use” it.
  3. State the boundary. Ask the assistant to distinguish what the source establishes from what it does not establish. Tell it not to fill gaps with assumptions or outside facts.
  4. Ask for an evidence map. Request the specific passage, section, or page supporting each material conclusion, where the tool can provide that information.
  5. Check the source version yourself. Confirm its date, status, and relevance to the question before relying on the response.

A source-bound prompt might read: “Answer using only the attached current policy. For each factual conclusion, identify the supporting section or passage. If the policy does not answer a point, say that it is not established by this document; do not infer an answer.” That instruction makes the desired boundary clear, but it cannot guarantee the assistant will follow it perfectly. Check for outside claims and unsupported inferences before using the result.

How should I ask for citations that are useful?

Ask for citations next to the claims they support, not only for a bibliography at the end. For material claims, request the source’s date and the exact passage or data point that supports the statement. This makes it easier to see when a citation is too general, does not substantiate the claim, or points to a source that has since changed.

For example, you could ask: “For each factual claim, provide a citation immediately after the claim. Include the source date and the supporting passage or exact figure. If you cannot find a reliable source for a claim, mark it as unverified instead of guessing.” This is a practical prompt, not a vendor guarantee or a special setting that eliminates errors.

  • Claim-level: Can you tell which source supports each important assertion?
  • Specific: Does the cited material address the same person, place, time period, product, or rule as the claim?
  • Current: Is the source recent enough for a fact that changes over time?
  • Authoritative: Is the source in a position to establish the fact, rather than merely repeating it?
  • Accessible: Can you open the source and inspect the relevant text yourself?

OpenAI cautions that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. A citation that looks plausible is not a reason to skip verification: open it and compare the actual wording, scope, and date against the generated claim. If the source supports only part of the sentence, narrow the sentence or remove the unsupported part.

What is a practical workflow for checking an AI answer?

Use a workflow that separates retrieval from verification. The assistant can help locate and organize evidence, but the person responsible for the decision or publication should decide whether the evidence supports the wording.

  1. Classify the question. Decide whether it needs current information, a controlled document set, or only a general explanation. This determines whether to use search, provide sources, or both.
  2. Set the evidence boundary. Name the source set, or ask for current web sources. For a document-only answer, state that the assistant must not use outside information and must identify unanswered points.
  3. Request a cautious answer with claim-level citations. Ask for sources beside factual claims, dates, and supporting passages for consequential points. Ask the assistant to say when it cannot verify a claim.
  4. Open and inspect each important source. Confirm that it loads, is relevant, is current, and says what the assistant claims it says. Do not rely on a search-result snippet alone for a consequential statement.
  5. Check high-impact details against the original. Compare quotations, figures, legal or policy statements, technical details, and external references with the original document or primary source.
  6. Edit to match the evidence. Remove unsupported claims, qualify claims whose source is limited, and preserve uncertainty where the source does not settle the question.
  7. Review the final version, including metadata. If the material is for a website, check titles, descriptions, and other AI-generated metadata along with the main copy.

This process is particularly important for publishable material. Google Search Central explicitly advises manually fact-checking and reviewing AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publication, including metadata. Treat review as part of producing the content, not as an optional step after the answer already looks polished.

What should I do when the AI cannot verify a claim?

Tell it to identify the gap rather than complete the answer with a plausible guess. Google recommends narrower, lower-risk tasks and human oversight as risk controls; applying that advice to fact-checking means treating unsupported claims as unknown until you can verify them independently.

Use a direct instruction such as: “If the sources do not establish the answer, say what remains unknown and what evidence would be needed. Do not infer a number, quote, date, or rule.” Then decide whether to seek a better source, narrow the claim, or leave it out.

Not every gap needs the same response. If the unanswered point is incidental, omit it. If it is necessary to the reader’s decision, find a primary or otherwise authoritative source before stating it. If a source supports a narrower statement but not the broader one the AI produced, publish only the narrower statement that the evidence actually establishes.

Where do these settings fail, and how do I compare them?

Search and grounding improve access to information and the ability to trace an answer, but retrieval is not validation. An assistant may find an old or partial page, select a weak source, cite a page that does not support the assertion, or misinterpret a genuine source. No numerical accuracy improvement or guaranteed hallucination reduction is established by the provider guidance discussed here.

When choosing a method, compare the practical controls rather than assuming that a feature name guarantees quality:

  • Freshness: Does the method retrieve material current enough for this question?
  • Authority and fit: Is the source qualified to establish this fact, and does it cover the same scope as the claim?
  • Claim mapping: Can you connect each important assertion to a specific source or passage?
  • Source control: Can you provide the exact documents the answer must follow?
  • Availability: Is the feature enabled for your plan, workspace, license, and administrator configuration?

For a fast-changing fact, web search may be the useful starting point, but still inspect the sources. For a question governed by an approved document, a controlled source set may reduce drift, but only if the document is current. For a high-stakes or publishable claim, use both retrieval and human review where appropriate; neither a citation nor a source-bound prompt replaces checking the evidence.

How can I make fact-checking part of a publishing workflow?

Build verification into the handoff between drafting and publication. The writer should be able to distinguish claims that are verified, claims that need qualification, and claims that have no adequate support. A clean, confident paragraph is not ready to publish merely because the AI attached citations.

Before drafting

  • Decide which claims require current sources and which should be grounded in a particular policy, report, or primary document.
  • Use the current version of any supplied source and make its authority clear to the assistant.
  • Set a narrow task when the question is consequential; broad prompts can invite broad unsupported answers.

During review

  • Check every material figure, quotation, named study, technical assertion, and external reference against its source.
  • Confirm the source date and scope, and check that the cited passage supports the exact claim rather than a related point.
  • Remove or qualify statements that outrun the available evidence; do not let the AI fill a source gap with confident prose.

Before publication

  • Review the final edited copy, because changes made after fact-checking can alter meaning or introduce a new claim.
  • Review AI-written metadata as well as body copy, in line with Google Search Central’s guidance for AI-generated web content.
  • Keep responsibility for the final accuracy decision with a human editor or subject-matter reviewer.

There is no named, supported statistic in the official guidance cited here that quantifies how much these settings reduce hallucinations or increase accuracy. The defensible benefit is procedural: search and grounding can expose relevant sources, citations can make claims easier to trace, and manual review can catch errors that those features do not prevent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ChatGPT tell the truth?

Sometimes, but a confident answer is not a reliable test of truth. OpenAI’s Help Center warns that ChatGPT may be wrong or fabricate citations, studies, and quotes, so verify consequential statements against the cited source.

What information does Copilot use to answer my prompt?

It can depend on your Copilot license and your organization’s administrator settings. Depending on that configuration, an answer may use web information, work data, or content you attached.

Can an AI citation be fake or misleading?

Yes. A citation may be fabricated, outdated, incomplete, or unrelated to the exact wording it accompanies. Open the cited source and check the relevant passage rather than relying on the citation’s appearance.

Can I use AI-generated content on a website without checking it?

Google Search Central advises manually reviewing AI-generated web content, including metadata, for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing. The final review should cover the edited version, not just an earlier draft.
