AI-enabled cyber threats are mostly faster, more targeted versions of familiar attacks—not universally autonomous “hacker bots.” Attackers now use large language models and other AI to scan technologies, personalize phishing, impersonate people by voice or video, write and debug malware, analyze stolen data, and create influence campaigns. A smaller but important frontier involves malware that calls an AI service or changes its behavior during execution. The practical response is to strengthen identity verification, monitor AI and software supply chains, patch exposed systems quickly, and rehearse rapid containment. This map separates widespread AI-assisted activity from emerging autonomous techniques so security teams can prioritize controls that reduce real risk now.

What changed when attackers adopted AI?

AI reduces the time, language skill, coding effort, and research needed for many attack steps. It also lets an operator personalize work at a scale that was previously expensive. The underlying objectives—steal credentials, persuade a user, exploit a vulnerable service, deploy malware, or manipulate information—are familiar. AI changes their speed, volume, adaptability, and apparent legitimacy.

The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) assesses that AI will “almost certainly increase the volume and heighten the impact of cyber attacks over the next two years.” It also says AI provides a capability uplift in reconnaissance and social engineering, making both more effective, efficient, and harder to detect. That is a forecast, not a claim that every intrusion is autonomous. Evidence is strongest for human-led operations using AI as an amplifier; fully agentic intrusions and runtime-adaptive malware remain less common.

How are hackers using AI across an attack?

AI can assist at nearly every stage, from choosing a target to monetizing stolen information. The sections below show what the capability does, what an operator still has to provide, and what defenders can observe.

Reconnaissance and discovery

Models can summarize public documentation, map an unfamiliar technology stack, identify likely attack surfaces, translate technical material, and prioritize exposed services. Google reports state-linked actors using large language models to research unfamiliar technologies and systems. NCSC says AI makes reconnaissance more effective, efficient, and difficult to detect.

AI does not magically reveal a private network. The attacker still needs search access, scans, stolen credentials, or another foothold. The advantage is compression: a small team can turn large amounts of public and collected information into a ranked target list quickly. Defenders should treat unusual automated discovery, bursts of requests across documentation or APIs, and new enumeration patterns as signals even when each individual request looks benign.

Social engineering, phishing, vishing and deepfakes

Generative systems produce fluent messages in many languages, adapt tone to a recipient, and create plausible pretexts for email, chat, phone, or video. CERT-EU’s review of 2025 activity reports growth in voice phishing, AI-generated deepfakes, OAuth abuse, and ClickFix attacks. Microsoft identifies AI-enabled spear phishing, “résumé swarming” (large volumes of tailored job applications or recruiter contact), and deepfakes as emerging techniques.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A convincing voice or video is no longer proof of identity. Criminals can combine scraped biographies, breached contact lists, and generated media to request a payment, a password reset, an OAuth consent, or an urgent transfer. The effective control is an independent channel: call a known number, use a pre-established approval workflow, or require a second person to confirm the request. Do not rely on caller ID, writing style, facial movement, or a familiar voice alone.

Identity and credential attacks

AI improves the targeting and persuasion around password theft, session-token theft, OAuth consent, and help-desk manipulation. Microsoft reported more than 600 million daily identity attacks observed by Microsoft Entra, with password-based attacks accounting for over 99 percent in its 2024 Digital Defense Report. That figure is Microsoft’s telemetry, not a count of all attacks worldwide, and it shows why identity controls remain central even when AI is involved.

Models can select the most credible lure, adjust timing, and generate localized instructions. They can also help an operator sift leaked credentials or identify which account has access to valuable systems. Phishing-resistant multifactor authentication (such as hardware security keys or passkeys), conditional access, short-lived sessions, and rapid revocation reduce the payoff. Monitor new OAuth grants, impossible travel, unusual device registration, and changes to recovery details.

Malware and exploit development

Threat actors use LLMs to troubleshoot code, generate scripts, research vulnerabilities, and accelerate development of loaders, credential stealers, and automation. ENISA documents both commercial models and diverted or misused models supporting malware development and social engineering. AI can lower the barrier for an operator who knows the goal but lacks expertise in a language, framework, or exploit chain.

Generated code is not automatically reliable. Attackers still need to test it against a target, evade defenses, obtain execution, and maintain access. Defenders should therefore focus on behavior: suspicious script interpreters, unusual child processes, unsigned binaries, persistence changes, and outbound connections to newly seen infrastructure. Code review and software composition analysis remain useful because generated code can introduce obvious vulnerabilities as well as malicious logic.

Adaptive and LLM-connected malware

Some malware can query an LLM API for just-in-time commands or code, allowing an operator to alter behavior after deployment. Mandiant has described this pattern, and Google reports active experimentation with malware that changes its code on the fly. This is a real capability, but it is not yet the dominant form of malware.

Runtime model access creates distinctive indicators: endpoints making unexpected requests to AI-provider domains, prompts or responses embedded in process activity, rapid changes in scripts or configuration, and execution paths that vary between otherwise similar hosts. Block unauthorized model-API use from production endpoints, restrict egress, inspect process-to-network relationships, and alert on code or configuration modification during execution. Keep in mind that an attacker can use an offline or self-hosted model, so network controls are only one layer.

Fraudulent AI-tool lures

ENISA reports fake websites and installers that impersonate popular AI tools and deliver malware or ransomware. The lure works because users are actively seeking new assistants, browser extensions, desktop clients, and model files. A polished interface, a familiar logo, or a search result does not establish authenticity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Provide an approved software catalog, block installation from untrusted sources, and require signed packages where possible. Endpoint controls should flag unsigned installers, browser extensions with excessive permissions, and applications that immediately create persistence or request sensitive data. Teach users to reach a tool through a known company bookmark rather than an advertisement or unsolicited message.

AI and software supply-chain attacks

AI systems add new supply-chain targets: hosted models, model weights, datasets, package registries, prompt and configuration files, and coding assistants. ENISA reports poisoned hosted machine-learning models, trojanized PyPI packages, and “Rules File Backdoor” attacks that manipulate configuration files read by AI coding assistants.

Use provenance and integrity checks for models and packages, pin dependencies, scan artifacts before promotion, and separate development credentials from production secrets. Treat assistant instructions and repository rule files as untrusted input: review changes, restrict tool permissions, and require human approval before code or infrastructure actions are executed. Log which model, package version, prompt context, and tool call produced a change so an investigation can reproduce it.

Data exploitation and influence operations

NCSC assesses that AI will improve analysis of exfiltrated data. Google reports AI-supported data exfiltration and influence operations, including persona development and message generation. A stolen database can be sorted into high-value records, translated, summarized, and matched to public information far faster than a human team could manage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Influence operators can generate many consistent personas, test messages, and tailor narratives to communities. Detection requires more than looking for grammatical errors: examine account creation patterns, coordinated timing, repeated media assets, infrastructure reuse, and abrupt shifts in audience or topic. Data minimization, encryption, access segmentation, and tested disclosure procedures reduce the amount of material an attacker can exploit.

Which AI cyber threats are most serious right now?

The highest practical risk comes from AI-augmented identity and social-engineering attacks because they are cheap, scalable, and aimed at controls every organization uses. Malware generation and data analysis are also widespread accelerants. Adaptive malware and autonomous intrusion deserve preparation, but their observed prevalence is lower than ordinary phishing, credential abuse, and exploitation.

Threat area What AI changes Current maturity Best defensive focus
Reconnaissance Faster technology research, asset discovery, translation, and prioritization Widespread augmentation Attack-surface management, rate and behavior monitoring, rapid exposure removal
Phishing, vishing and deepfakes Personalization, multilingual delivery, synthetic voice/video and higher message volume Widespread and growing Phishing-resistant MFA, out-of-band verification, payment and OAuth approval controls
Credential and OAuth abuse Better pretexts, targeting and analysis of leaked identity data Widespread Passkeys or security keys, conditional access, token and consent monitoring
Malware development Quicker scripting, debugging, vulnerability research and tool iteration Widespread augmentation Endpoint behavior detection, application control, secure development practices
LLM-connected or adaptive malware Just-in-time commands or code and behavior changes during execution Emerging, less prevalent Egress control, API monitoring, integrity protection, rapid isolation
Fake AI installers Credible lures around popular tools and model files Active criminal technique Approved catalogs, signed software, browser and endpoint controls
AI supply-chain attacks Poisoned models, packages and assistant configuration Active and expanding Provenance, pinning, artifact scanning, least-privilege assistants
Data exploitation and influence Rapid sorting of stolen data and scalable persona and message creation Growing Data minimization, segmentation, coordinated-behavior analytics

How autonomous are AI-enabled attacks?

Autonomy is a spectrum, not a yes-or-no label. Most operations still have a human selecting targets, approving key actions, acquiring access, or adapting to defenses. AI may automate one task while the rest of the intrusion remains conventional.

How can an organization defend against AI-powered attacks?

Start with controls that stop ordinary identity and exposure failures, then add monitoring for AI-specific behavior. A practical sequence is:

  1. Make identity phishing-resistant. Deploy passkeys or hardware security keys for administrators and high-value users. Remove legacy authentication, enforce conditional access, limit session lifetime, and review privileged roles.
  2. Create independent verification for high-impact requests. Require a known-number callback or a second approver for payments, bank-detail changes, password resets, new OAuth consent, and urgent requests delivered by voice or video. Define the procedure before an incident so urgency cannot bypass it.
  3. Control OAuth and application permissions. Restrict who can grant consent, review existing grants, alert on new publishers and high-risk scopes, and revoke unused tokens. A valid login can still be an attack if consent gives an application excessive access.
  4. Patch and reduce internet exposure. Inventory edge devices and public services, prioritize exploitable vulnerabilities, remove unnecessary administration interfaces, and verify that fixes are actually deployed. AI-assisted reconnaissance makes stale inventories more dangerous.
  5. Monitor endpoints and egress together. Correlate script execution, process trees, persistence, file changes, DNS, and outbound connections. Alert when a workstation unexpectedly contacts an AI API, downloads a model or package, or modifies code and configuration during execution.
  6. Secure the AI and software supply chain. Maintain an approved model and package list, verify signatures and hashes, pin versions, scan dependencies, isolate build systems, and require review for assistant-generated code and rule-file changes. Keep production secrets out of prompts and development environments.
  7. Govern internal AI use. Publish approved tools, data-handling rules, retention limits, logging requirements, and prohibited inputs. Give users a safe way to report a suspicious generated message or tool rather than driving activity into unsanctioned services.
  8. Exercise response to synthetic impersonation. Test a simulated deepfake payment request, stolen OAuth token, poisoned package, and compromised AI account. Measure how quickly the organization can revoke access, isolate a host, notify finance, preserve logs, and communicate with customers.

What should security teams monitor for AI-specific warning signs?

No single detector proves that AI was used. Strong detection combines identity, endpoint, network, and business-process signals.

  • Unusual bursts of highly personalized messages, new language patterns, or sender infrastructure that changes rapidly.
  • New OAuth applications, consent to broad scopes, impossible-travel logins, unfamiliar device registration, or recovery-factor changes.
  • Outbound calls from user endpoints to model providers, model repositories, package registries, or paste and file-sharing services that are not part of the approved workflow.
  • Scripts or binaries that rewrite themselves, fetch instructions at runtime, or create new persistence shortly after contacting an external service.
  • Unexpected edits to repository rule files, CI configuration, dependency manifests, model weights, prompt templates, or deployment policies.
  • Coordinated account creation, synchronized posting, repeated synthetic media, or persona behavior that does not match the claimed community.

Detection should feed an action, not merely a score. Define which signal triggers token revocation, endpoint isolation, package quarantine, payment verification, or escalation to legal and communications teams.

What do the recent numbers actually show?

Available figures demonstrate rising activity but cannot be combined into one global incident rate because the sources use different definitions, dates, regions, and visibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security recorded 138 publicly reported generative-AI incidents resulting in harm or near harm in 2024, compared with 107 in 2023, in its National Cyber Threat Assessment 2025–2026. These are public reports meeting that assessment’s criteria, not every event worldwide.
  • Microsoft’s 2024 Digital Defense Report described more than 600 million daily identity attacks observed by Microsoft Entra; over 99 percent were password-based. The measurement reflects Microsoft’s service telemetry and should not be read as a census of all identity attacks.
  • CERT-EU’s release covering 2025 tracked 174 threat actors, up from 110 the prior year. The change reflects that tracking set and methodology, not a complete count of all actors.

What should leaders expect over the next two years?

Expect more volume and better targeting before expecting fully independent cyber armies. Models will become better at translating technical and social context, chaining ordinary tools, and analyzing stolen material. Attackers will also exploit organizations’ own AI deployments through weak access controls, prompt and configuration poisoning, exposed APIs, and unreviewed generated code.

Plan for uncertainty by making high-impact actions reversible and attributable. Require approval for financial transfers, privilege changes, production deployments, model and package updates, and external data sharing. Preserve detailed logs of identity events, tool calls, model versions, code changes, and administrative decisions; without that evidence, an AI-assisted incident is difficult to scope.

How should a small organization prioritize its first 30 days?

A smaller team can reduce most immediate risk without building a specialized AI lab.

  1. Turn on phishing-resistant MFA for administrators and email, remove legacy sign-in methods, and review privileged accounts.
  2. Write a two-person, out-of-band verification rule for payments, password resets, OAuth consent, and changes to supplier banking details.
  3. Inventory public-facing services and critical software, patch the edge, and disable unused remote administration.
  4. Publish an approved AI-tool list and prohibit confidential customer, employee, credential, and source-code data in unapproved services.
  5. Enable endpoint, identity, DNS, and email logging; confirm that someone reviews alerts every day.
  6. Run one tabletop exercise involving a deepfake request and one involving a compromised AI or software package.

These steps address the attack paths that are already common while creating the visibility needed to handle more autonomous techniques as they mature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI write a phishing email that bypasses spam filters?

It can produce natural language, personalization, and formatting that remove many traditional warning signs, but delivery still depends on sender reputation, infrastructure, authentication, and the recipient’s behavior. Domain-based message authentication, link analysis, attachment controls, and phishing-resistant sign-in remain useful because they do not rely on spotting awkward wording.

Are deepfake video calls reliable evidence of a person’s identity?

No. Video, voice, and caller ID can all be synthesized or manipulated. For money movement, account recovery, or privileged changes, use a pre-agreed second channel and a documented approval process rather than visual or audio familiarity.

Should a company block every request to an AI service?

A blanket block can push employees toward unsanctioned tools and does not stop offline models. A better approach is an approved service list, identity-based access, egress logging, sensitive-data filtering, retention rules, and explicit limits on tool actions.

What is a poisoned machine-learning model?

It is a model artifact altered to introduce hidden behavior, biased outputs, or a trigger that activates under chosen conditions. Verify provenance and hashes, scan and test models before deployment, isolate evaluation from production, and keep a known-good version for rollback.

How quickly should an organization respond to a suspected AI-assisted breach?

Use the same urgency as any credential or malware incident: contain the account or host, revoke tokens and sessions, preserve logs and artifacts, and verify whether code, packages, models, or configuration changed. Then investigate whether generated content or automation expanded the scope before restoring access.
