If an AI system never cites your page, the most likely problem is not writing quality: its crawler could not successfully retrieve, process, or index the content. Check the crawler’s role, robots.txt, CDN or WAF response, server-rendered HTML, indexing signals, and access logs in that order. Search crawlers, training crawlers, and user-requested fetchers use separate controls, so allowing one bot does not automatically allow the others.

Why did the model never read my page?

A page must pass several gates before an answer system can use it. A crawler first requests the URL, then follows robots.txt policy, survives CDN and origin security controls, receives useful text, and—when the product depends on a search index—has the URL indexed and eligible for a search snippet. Failure at any gate can look like a model “ignoring” an otherwise excellent article.

  1. Request: the provider’s crawler must resolve DNS, connect, and receive an HTTP response.
  2. Policy: the request must be permitted by robots.txt and any provider-specific restrictions.
  3. Edge and origin: bot management, a WAF, rate limits, authentication, geo rules, or a JavaScript challenge must not replace the page with a block screen.
  4. Extraction: the response must contain the title, answer, definitions, tables, and evidence in text the crawler can process.
  5. Index eligibility: search-based experiences still need an indexable canonical URL and permission to show a snippet.

Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode use the ordinary Search index and require a page to be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet. That means a page can be perfectly readable when opened by a person yet absent from an AI answer because it is not indexed, is excluded by a preview directive, or failed an earlier access step.

Which AI crawler should I allow?

Start by naming the product function you want, not by treating “AI crawler” as one universal identity. Search discovery, model training, and a fetch triggered by an individual user are different purposes with independent controls.

Provider or system Crawler or signal Primary role Practical implication
OpenAI OAI-SearchBot Surfaces websites in search results in ChatGPT search features. Blocking it can reduce search visibility in those features.
OpenAI GPTBot Training-related crawling. A training opt-out does not necessarily block search crawling.
OpenAI ChatGPT-User User-triggered retrieval. Controls for a live user request are separate from search and training controls.
Anthropic ClaudeBot General crawler documented for Anthropic services. Anthropic says it honors robots.txt and documents Crawl-delay for this bot.
Anthropic Claude-SearchBot Search discovery. Blocking it can affect search visibility independently of other Anthropic bots.
Anthropic Claude-User User-requested fetching. A live fetch may be governed by a different rule than search crawling.
Google Google Search crawler and indexing systems Ordinary Search indexing used by AI Overviews and AI Mode. Normal Search technical requirements and snippet eligibility still apply.

Google also states that Google-Extended does not have a separate HTTP request user-agent string. Do not expect a log entry labeled Google-Extended; treat it as a control signal rather than a distinct network identity.

How do I check whether robots.txt blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or a search crawler?

Open the robots.txt file at the exact site root and each relevant subdomain, then evaluate the rule for the specific user-agent token. A rule for * is not always the complete answer when a provider-specific group also exists.

  1. Request https://example.com/robots.txt and repeat for every host that serves important content, such as www, a documentation subdomain, or a regional host.
  2. Find groups named for the exact token, such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, or Claude-User.
  3. Apply the longest matching path rule. A specific path rule can override a broader site-wide rule.
  4. Check whether a later group, wildcard group, or conflicting Allow and Disallow directives changes the result for the URL you care about.
  5. Record the file’s response status and content. A timeout, redirect loop, or HTML challenge page is a delivery failure even if the intended text says “Allow.”

For example, this policy expresses separate choices rather than one blanket switch:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /

That configuration allows search and user-triggered retrieval while expressing a training opt-out. Whether a provider honors the policy still depends on the provider’s documented behavior and the request reaching the file successfully.

Can a CDN or WAF block a crawler even when robots.txt allows it?

Yes. robots.txt is a published preference, not a network permission. A CDN, WAF, bot-management layer, rate limiter, authentication gateway, geo restriction, or challenge page can stop a request before the crawler retrieves the page or even reads robots.txt.

What to inspect at the edge

  • HTTP status codes for the crawler request, especially 401, 403, 429, 503, and redirect loops.
  • Response length and content type. A short HTML “verify you are human” page is not your article.
  • Challenge cookies, interstitial scripts, CAPTCHA responses, and TLS or protocol errors.
  • Rate-limit thresholds and burst behavior. A crawler that succeeds once may receive 429 responses after several URLs.
  • Rules based on geography, ASN, IP reputation, or user-agent strings.

Test from a controlled request that uses the provider’s published user-agent and, where possible, verify the source IP against the provider’s current IP ranges. Do not allowlist an unverified string alone: user-agent values can be spoofed, while logs that combine timestamps, IPs, paths, and response codes provide stronger evidence.

How can JavaScript hide content from AI crawlers?

JavaScript can make essential information unavailable to crawlers that do not render scripts or that stop before client-side data requests finish. Put the page’s title, direct answer, definitions, tables, and key evidence in the initial HTML whenever possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google describes a crawl-render-index pipeline and can render JavaScript when it is not blocked, but it also warns that other search engines may ignore JavaScript-generated content. Server-side rendering or static rendering therefore reduces uncertainty across providers. A reliable test compares:

  1. View source or the raw HTTP response: confirm the main text appears before scripts execute.
  2. Rendered DOM: check whether the visible answer is inserted only after JavaScript runs.
  3. Network requests: identify API calls that supply the article body, and verify they do not require a session, special header, or browser challenge.
  4. Failure mode: disable JavaScript or block third-party scripts and see whether the core answer remains understandable.

Interactive filters, calculators, and navigation can remain client-side, but do not make the only explanation of a topic depend on them.

How do I verify indexing and AI preview controls?

Use your search engine’s indexing diagnostics before changing crawler permissions. Google recommends Search Console and URL Inspection for checking whether a URL is indexed, which canonical was selected, and whether recrawling is needed.

  • Review snippet or preview restrictions that may prevent the text from being shown in search features.

Google’s guidance says there are no additional technical requirements for eligibility in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond ordinary Search requirements. You do not need special AI schema, an AI-only text file, or a new markup format to qualify.

Is llms.txt required for AI visibility?

No. Google’s current guidance says Google Search does not use llms.txt as a special visibility mechanism, and no special AI markup is required. A site may publish the file for another system that chooses to read it, but it cannot compensate for blocked requests, an unindexed URL, a noindex directive, or content hidden behind JavaScript.

Maintain llms.txt only as an optional, provider-specific aid with a clear owner and update process. Treat crawlability, indexability, readable HTML, and accurate server responses as the required foundation.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT search traffic?

Not necessarily. GPTBot is a training-related control, while OAI-SearchBot is documented as the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT search features. Blocking GPTBot can express a training preference while leaving search discovery available; blocking OAI-SearchBot can reduce search visibility even if GPTBot remains allowed.

The same distinction applies to Anthropic’s ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, and Claude-User. Write a policy that states the purpose you are opting into or out of, then test each relevant token separately. Never describe one Disallow line as a universal AI switch.

What should I look for in access logs?

Logs can show whether a real crawler reached the page and what it received. Review a time window before and after every policy or infrastructure change.

  • Timestamp with timezone and request duration.
  • Requested path, query string, and HTTP method.
  • User-agent string and source IP address.
  • Status code, response bytes, content type, and redirect target.
  • Rate-limit, WAF, authentication, or challenge identifiers.
  • Whether the request fetched robots.txt, the HTML document, and required assets.

A 2025 University of Chicago IMC study observed nine AI crawlers in passive measurement. Seven respected robots.txt in that study, while Bytespider did not. This is a reason to verify behavior empirically, not a universal compliance rate for every crawler or website. Compare the observed IP with the provider’s published ranges and look for repeated successful HTML responses rather than relying on a user-agent label alone.

How do I retest after fixing access?

Retest in a controlled sequence and record the expected result for each change. Crawlers may not revisit immediately, so a correct fix can take time to appear in a product.

  1. Save the previous robots.txt, header, WAF, or rendering configuration.
  2. Make one targeted change, such as allowing a search bot on one path or removing a challenge for verified crawler traffic.
  3. Request robots.txt and the target URL with the relevant user-agent; capture status, headers, body length, and final URL.
  4. Check the raw HTML for the answer text and confirm noindex, canonical, and preview directives.
  5. Review logs for a successful provider request and verify the source IP where documentation permits.
  6. Use Search Console URL Inspection for Google-managed indexing and request recrawling when appropriate.
  7. Wait for provider recrawl and processing, then repeat the same measurements and date the result.

Keep a small audit record with the bot role, URL, rule, response, log evidence, and change date. That prevents a later security edit from silently undoing an access fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for a crawler-policy change to work?

There is no universal delay. Providers must recrawl robots.txt and the page, then process the result, so keep the change date and watch logs rather than judging success immediately.

Can an indexed page still be excluded from an AI answer?

Yes. Indexing makes a URL eligible for a search system, not guaranteed for every query. Relevance, snippet permissions, freshness, and the product’s retrieval process can still determine whether the page is selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I allow every AI bot to avoid losing traffic?

No. Decide separately whether you permit search discovery, model training, and user-triggered retrieval. Broadly allowing bots can conflict with your content or licensing policy, while narrowly allowing the role you want is easier to audit.

What is stronger evidence than a crawler user-agent string?

Correlate the user-agent with timestamp, requested path, response code, response bytes, and a verified provider IP range. A string alone can be imitated and does not prove that the request received your real page.
