If an AI-assisted article is flagged as “templated,” do not begin by swapping random synonyms. Use n-gram analysis to find the repeated words, phrases, and sentence patterns that make the draft sound interchangeable, then rewrite the passages that carry the signal. Count unigrams (single tokens), bigrams (two-token sequences), and trigrams (three-token sequences), compare their rates with several human-written pieces in the same topic and format, and inspect recurring syntactic frames. This is an editorial diagnostic, not proof of who wrote the text.
The most reliable fix combines lower lexical repetition with more specific information, varied sentence openings, and transitions that follow the argument. Re-measure the revised draft, fact-check every claim, and preserve legitimate terminology that readers need.
What does it mean when AI content is flagged as templated?
A templated flag usually means that a draft has a statistically repetitive surface: familiar word sequences recur at an unusually high rate, paragraphs use the same openings, or sentences follow nearly identical grammatical frames. It does not establish that a language model wrote the piece. Topic, genre, translation, formal style, and heavy editing can all produce similar signals.
An n-gram is a contiguous sequence of tokens. A unigram contains one token, a bigram two, and a trigram three. Counting those units shows whether a draft leans on the same connective phrases, noun combinations, or sentence scaffolds again and again.

There is evidence that syntactic repetition matters beyond individual words. In an EMNLP 2024 paper, Chantal Shaib, Yanai Elazar, Junyi Jessy Li, and Byron C. Wallace reported: “We find that most (76%) templates in model-generated text can be found in pre-training data (compared to only 35% of human-authored text).” Their templates are based on part-of-speech patterns, so two sentences can look alike even when their vocabulary differs.
Signals also vary by model family and version. A 2026 Graphite analysis of 10,000 human articles and 90,000 AI-generated articles from nine models found that many detectable tells were model-specific and changed between versions. Treat any flag as a prompt for editorial inspection, not as an authorship verdict.
How does n-gram math reveal repetitive wording?
The basic calculation is a frequency distribution. After consistent tokenization, count each unit and divide by the number of units of that size. You can then compare the draft’s distribution with a reference set of human writing in the same subject, audience, and format.
| Unit | Example from “The battery saves energy in winter” | What a high concentration can indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Unigram | battery |
Overused terms or filler words that dominate the vocabulary |
| Bigram | saves energy |
Repeated collocations and stock transitions |
| Trigram | saves energy in |
Longer phrases and sentence fragments that recur verbatim |
For an n-gram g, its normalized frequency is:
frequency(g) = count(g) / total number of n-grams
Compare that value with the same calculation for a reference corpus. A simple difference score is:
difference(g) = draft_frequency(g) − reference_frequency(g)
Large positive differences identify phrases worth reading in context. The phrase itself is not automatically bad; a technical term may be necessary. The question is whether it appears more often than the topic and genre require.

Microsoft Learn describes BLEU, ROUGE, and Jensen–Shannon (JS) divergence as n-gram-based metrics. BLEU can average unigram, bigram, and trigram comparisons, while JS divergence compares two probability distributions symmetrically. These metrics were designed for evaluating generated text or comparing distributions, but the same mechanics can support an editorial audit.

- Unigram concentration: the share of the draft occupied by its most frequent words. Remove or separately report stop words so that common function words do not dominate the result.
- Bigram and trigram concentration: the proportion represented by the most frequent two- and three-token sequences. These often expose repeated transitions such as “in today’s world,” “it is important to,” or “not only … but also.”
- Unique-to-total ratio: the number of distinct n-grams divided by all n-grams of that size. A low ratio can signal formulaic phrasing, although short or highly technical texts naturally have fewer unique terms.
- Overlap with references: the percentage of draft n-grams also found in comparable human articles. High overlap is not plagiarism by itself; common subject terminology will raise it.
Why compare distributions instead of chasing a single score?
No universal cutoff separates “human” from “AI.” A product manual, a legal explanation, and a personal essay have different legitimate repetition patterns. Distribution comparisons show which phrases are unusually prominent for this particular assignment rather than applying a threshold built for another genre.
Why can an AI-assisted draft sound templated even after editing?
Editing individual nouns rarely changes the underlying cadence. A draft can retain the same signal through several interacting features.
Repeated lexical bundles
Language models often produce safe connective phrases because they are broadly applicable. If every section begins with “When it comes to,” “It is important to note,” or “In conclusion,” the reader notices the pattern before noticing the information. Repetition can also occur in less obvious noun-verb pairs, such as “provides users with” or “helps businesses improve.”
Repeated syntactic frames
A syntactic frame is a part-of-speech or grammatical template. Examples include:
Adverbial transition + subject + verb: “However, the system requires …”It is not X; it is Y: “It is not a replacement; it is a supplement.”To + verb, subject + should + verb: “To reduce risk, teams should review …”There are + plural noun + that + verb: “There are several factors that affect …”
Changing nouns while preserving one of these frames across a dozen paragraphs can leave the prose sounding machine-made. Mark the frames, not just the repeated words.

Uniform paragraph architecture
Many generated drafts use a predictable sequence: broad claim, three benefits, warning, and a concluding sentence. That structure is not wrong, but repeating it for every section makes the article feel assembled from a template. Readers respond better when paragraph length and order reflect the evidence: a definition may need two short paragraphs, while a troubleshooting case may need a numbered sequence.
Model- and version-specific habits
Statistical tells can shift when a model is updated or when a prompt changes. A phrase that was common in one model family may not be common in another. This is why an external detector’s label should be treated as a lead for inspection rather than a definitive diagnosis.
How do I run an n-gram audit on my own draft?
Use the following workflow before rewriting. It is an editorial application of n-gram metrics and syntactic-template analysis, not a published universal detector recipe.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Build a comparable reference set. Collect several strong human-written pieces about the same subject, for the same audience and format. Use technical explainers to assess a technical explainer, not casual social posts. Keep the samples recent enough to reflect current terminology, and remove boilerplate such as navigation, author bios, and legal notices.
- Normalize consistently. Convert text to one case, standardize apostrophes and dashes, decide how to treat numbers and URLs, and tokenize every document with the same rules. Keep a copy of the original so that normalization never changes the published text.
- Count unigrams, bigrams, and trigrams. Record raw counts, normalized frequencies, and the top repeated units for the draft and each reference document. A minimal implementation can follow this logic:
tokens = normalize_and_tokenize(text)
for n in (1, 2, 3):
grams = [tuple(tokens[i:i+n]) for i in range(len(tokens)-n+1)]
counts = frequency_table(grams)
ranked = sort_by_count(counts)
report(ranked[:25], total=len(grams))
- Compare like with like. Calculate the draft’s frequency for each prominent n-gram and compare it with the combined reference distribution. Flag units that are much more common in the draft, but inspect every flag in context. A high score for a required term such as “two-factor authentication” is not a style defect.
- Inspect syntactic frames. Read the first sentence of every paragraph and mark repeated openings, transition patterns, clause order, and rhetorical formulas. Part-of-speech tagging can help, but a careful manual pass catches editorial patterns that an automated tagger may miss.
- Rewrite for information and voice. Replace generic claims with verifiable specifics, vary sentence openings when the logic permits, and use transitions that explain the actual relationship between ideas. Add a concrete example only when it is accurate; do not invent personal experience or reporting.
- Re-measure and fact-check. Run the same counts after revision. Confirm that repetition decreased without removing necessary terminology or changing the meaning. Then verify every factual statement, number, date, and quotation manually.
- Explain automation when useful. For readers who would reasonably care, provide context about how automation was used and what human review covered. Google advises focusing on accuracy, quality, and relevance when creating web content, including content generated automatically, and recommends giving readers context about automation where appropriate.
Which phrases should I rewrite first?
Prioritize repetition that carries little information. A practical order is repeated paragraph openings, repeated transitions, generic claims, and duplicated conclusions. Leave domain terms, product names that the assignment requires, and carefully defined concepts alone unless they are genuinely overused.
| Audit finding | Why it sounds templated | Better editorial move |
|---|---|---|
| The same transition starts five sections | Readers can predict the cadence before reaching the point | Use a transition only where the relationship needs stating; otherwise begin with the evidence or action |
| “This helps users…” appears repeatedly | The subject and verb carry almost no new information | Name the user, task, and measurable effect, if established |
| Every paragraph has three benefits | Uniform architecture obscures which benefit matters most | Lead with the decisive benefit, then add limitations or examples in the order they matter |
| Several sentences use “It is not X; it is Y” | The contrastive frame becomes a recognizable tic | State the distinction directly or show it through a concrete case |
| Trigrams repeat but wording is factual | Stock collocations may be crowding out specific language | Keep required terminology and rewrite surrounding clauses, not the term itself |
What does a useful rewrite look like?
Suppose a draft says: “It is important to note that a backup is not a replacement for security; it is an essential part of a comprehensive security strategy.” The sentence uses a familiar opener and a repeated contrastive frame.
A fact-centered revision could be: “A backup lets you restore data after loss; it does not prevent an attacker from reading a live account.” This version states the operational distinction and gives the reader a concrete consequence. Use it only when the surrounding article has established that restoration and prevention are separate controls.

For a repeated benefit claim, replace “This helps businesses improve efficiency” with the actual process: “Batching invoices once a day removes the manual export step.” If the draft has no evidence for that result, do not manufacture a number or present the example as a measured outcome. Say what the feature does, identify who performs the task, and qualify any result you cannot verify.

Can n-gram analysis prove that a person or a model wrote the text?
No. N-gram concentration measures surface distribution and similarity. It cannot identify an author, establish the extent of model involvement, or determine legal ownership.
Provenance systems use different signals. OpenAI has described textGrain as a signal that subtly changes the randomness of word or word-piece choices. Such provenance signals still do not guarantee accuracy, authorship, legal ownership, or a precise measure of how much a model contributed. A detector result should therefore never be the sole basis for rejecting a submission, accusing a writer, or making a disciplinary decision.

- Syntactic repetition: Do paragraph openings, part-of-speech sequences, or rhetorical frames repeat?
- Reference similarity: Does the draft overlap with the reference corpus because of necessary terminology, or because it copies stock phrasing?
- Robustness: Does the pattern remain after ordinary human editing, punctuation changes, and removal of boilerplate?
- Editorial quality: Is every claim accurate, relevant, specific, and useful to the intended reader?
Google’s guidance puts accuracy, quality, and relevance at the center of content evaluation. A draft that scores well on a statistical measure but contains vague, unsupported, or misleading claims still needs revision.

What mistakes make an n-gram rewrite worse?
- Blind synonym swapping: Replacing “use” with “utilize” can lower one count while making the sentence less natural and less precise.
- Deleting necessary terms: Removing a technical phrase to improve a score can make instructions ambiguous or wrong.
- Adding fake personality: Invented anecdotes, first-hand testing, or unsupported observations are not legitimate ways to make prose sound human.
- Optimizing for a detector: Detector behavior changes, and a score is not a quality standard. Optimize for reader value and verify the facts.
- Comparing unlike corpora: A legal document and a casual blog post have different normal repetition levels. Use a reference set that matches the assignment.
- Ignoring short-text effects: A 300-word note has fewer n-grams and more volatile percentages than a long article. Treat small samples as directional evidence only.
- Forgetting boilerplate: Navigation labels, disclaimers, and repeated calls to action can dominate counts. Strip them consistently from both draft and references.
What is the practical fix when a detector has already flagged the article?
Start with the flagged passages, not the entire document. Preserve claims that are accurate and necessary, then apply the audit to repeated phrases and frames. Rewrite toward specific information, varied but logical sentence structures, and transitions that reveal the argument. Recount the n-grams, read the article aloud for cadence, and complete a separate fact-check before publication.
The objective is not to disguise authorship. It is to remove empty repetition and make the article more informative, distinctive, and accountable to its readers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many reference articles do I need for a meaningful comparison?
Use several pieces rather than a single exemplar so one writer’s habits do not define the baseline. Keep the subject, audience, length range, and format similar, and record which documents were included so the comparison can be repeated.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does paraphrasing every repeated phrase solve a templated flag?
Usually not. If the same sentence frame and paragraph sequence remain, synonym changes only hide the surface pattern and may reduce clarity. Change the information order or grammatical structure where the logic allows, then keep precise terminology.
Can n-gram analysis work on a short article or product description?
Yes, but percentages are unstable when there are few tokens. Treat the results as prompts for manual review, combine them with same-length references, and avoid drawing conclusions from one repeated phrase.
How should I handle quotations and required legal wording?
Mark quoted or mandated text separately before counting so it does not inflate your style profile. Keep the wording exact where law, policy, or attribution requires it, and evaluate the original prose around those passages.
