AI coding assistance can make some developers faster on some tasks, but there is no dependable speed multiplier for software development as a whole. A 2025 Google trial found an adjusted 21% shorter completion time for one complex enterprise task, while a 2026 analysis of three workplace experiments found 26.08% more completed tasks. In contrast, a METR trial found experienced open-source developers took 19% longer on familiar, mature repositories. Evidence about hidden defects is thinner: a vendor-run coding task produced better unit-test results with AI, but no cited study establishes a general change in production defect rates. The safe conclusion is conditional: measure AI-assisted work locally, keep normal review and testing gates, and judge speed together with correctness, maintainability and delivery stability.
Does AI make developers faster?
Sometimes, but the result depends on the task, the developer, the codebase and what “faster” means. Completion time for a bounded task, number of tasks finished, quarterly output, test results and production incidents are different outcomes. Treating them as one speed score creates a misleading headline.
The strongest estimates in the available studies point in different directions:
| Study and date | Participants and setting | What was measured | Reported result | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google, 2025 | 96 full-time Google engineers; randomized trial of a complex enterprise-grade task using internal tooling | Time to complete the task | Adjusted estimate: about 21% shorter completion time | The confidence interval was large; one task and internal tools may not generalize |
| Cui, Demirer, Jaffe, Musolff, Peng and Salz, Management Science, online 27 February 2026 | Three randomized workplace experiments involving 4,867 developers at Microsoft, Accenture and an anonymous Fortune 100 company | Completed tasks | 26.08% increase; standard error 10.3% | Individual experiments were noisy and effects varied |
| Becker, Rush, Barnes and Rein, METR, 12 July 2025 preprint | 16 experienced open-source developers completing 246 tasks on mature projects they knew well; early-2025 frontier tools when allowed | Task-completion time | 19% longer completion time | Specific population, repositories and tool window; authors describe it as a snapshot |
| Science/AAAS analysis, 2026 | 160,097 developers, more than 30 million GitHub commits across six countries | Estimated quarterly output in an observational analysis | 3.6% estimated increase among senior developers; no significant increase among early-career developers | Observational estimate, not a randomized causal effect |
The practical answer is therefore conditional. AI may remove typing, search and boilerplate work in a new, well-specified task. It can also add time when a developer must verify unfamiliar output, untangle changes in a large repository or correct subtly wrong assumptions.

What the fastest results actually measured
The Google result is a time estimate for one complex enterprise task, not a promise that every engineer will gain 21%. The Management Science result aggregates workplace experiments and counts completed tasks; it is not the same as minutes saved per task. The Science estimate tracks commits and output over a quarter, which says little by itself about review burden, incidents or long-term maintainability.
Why a slower result is still useful
METR’s counterexample is not evidence that AI slows all developers. It shows that experienced people working in repositories they already understand can lose time to context switching, tool interaction and verification. The authors wrote: “Although the influence of experimental artifacts cannot be entirely ruled out, the robustness of the slowdown effect across our analyses suggests it is unlikely to primarily be a function of our experimental design.” That caution makes the result a useful boundary condition rather than a universal rule.
Why do AI speed studies disagree?
They are answering different questions under different working conditions. Compare the setting before applying any percentage to your own team.
Bounded new work versus mature-repository maintenance
A bounded endpoint or enterprise task has a defined interface and a relatively clear finish line. Mature projects contain conventions, historical workarounds, implicit dependencies and tests that may not explain every requirement. A suggestion that is plausible in isolation can be expensive to adapt to an established architecture.
Individual time versus throughput
“Time to complete” measures one task. “Completed tasks” measures throughput in a workplace. Throughput can rise while review queues, rework or operational load also rise. Quarterly commit output is broader still and should not be treated as a direct measure of customer value.
Developer experience and familiarity
The field experiments and Google trial included working engineers in organizational settings, while METR focused on experienced open-source contributors familiar with their repositories. A developer who knows the codebase can spot an incorrect abstraction quickly, but may also reject or rework suggestions that conflict with established design. A less experienced developer may gain more from scaffolding while having a harder time recognizing a plausible-looking error.
Tool versions and workflow design
AI systems change quickly. METR tested early-2025 tools, so its result should not be silently applied to a later model or editor. Internal enterprise tooling in the Google trial also differs from a public assistant used in a local development environment. Record the model, editor integration, repository and task type whenever you compare results.

Statistical uncertainty
The 21% Google estimate has a large confidence interval, and the 26.08% workplace estimate has a 10.3% standard error. Those figures signal uncertainty, not a guaranteed range for every team. Use them as evidence that gains are possible, then run a controlled measurement in your own workflow.
Does AI-generated code have more bugs?
No general defect rate has been established by the cited evidence. AI-generated code can be correct, incorrect or difficult to maintain, and the available studies do not support a blanket claim that it creates either more or fewer production bugs.
GitHub’s randomized study, published 18 November 2024 and updated 6 February 2025, involved 202 developers writing API endpoints for a web server. Copilot users had a 53.2% greater likelihood of passing all 10 unit tests on that task, alongside code-review outcomes reported by the study. That is useful evidence against the assumption that AI output is necessarily worse, but it is vendor research on a bounded exercise. Passing those tests does not establish security, reliability or defect rates after deployment.
DORA’s 2025 report describes AI adoption alongside changes in delivery throughput and stability. It is an organizational survey and guidance report, not a controlled estimate that AI caused particular incidents. The evidence does not provide a definitive field statistic for defects attributable to AI assistance.

A hidden defect is a failure that survives the checks a team normally performs and appears later under an untested input, environment or operating condition. AI can make this risk harder to notice when code looks idiomatic but encodes a wrong assumption. Typical failure modes worth checking include:
- Boundary conditions that are absent from the prompt or test suite.
- Incorrect API, library or framework usage that compiles but behaves differently at runtime.
- Error handling that drops failures, retries unsafe operations or exposes sensitive details.
- Concurrency, state-management or transaction assumptions that only fail under load.
- Dependency, configuration or migration changes that work locally but not in production.
- Duplicated logic that passes immediate tests while increasing future maintenance cost.
These are engineering risks, not measured AI-specific rates in the cited studies. The appropriate response is to strengthen ordinary controls rather than infer a defect percentage that has not been demonstrated.
Can AI coding tools introduce hidden defects even when tests pass?
Yes. Tests provide evidence for the cases they exercise; they do not prove that untested behavior is safe. An AI-assisted change can pass a small suite while violating an architectural invariant, weakening authorization, degrading performance or creating an operational failure path.

Check the contract before checking the code
Write down inputs, outputs, invariants, failure behavior and security requirements before accepting generated code. If the requirement is ambiguous, ask for clarification or split the task. A precise contract makes both human review and automated tests more effective.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use layered verification
- Static checks: compile, lint, type-check and scan dependencies.
- Focused tests: cover normal, boundary, invalid and authorization cases.
- Integration tests: exercise real interfaces, persistence, queues and configuration.
- Human review: inspect the diff line by line, including generated tests and configuration.
- Operational checks: review logs, metrics, resource use, rollback behavior and alerting.
Do not let an assistant-generated test become the only definition of correctness. Ask a reviewer to derive independent cases from the requirement, because a test copied from the same mistaken assumption can confirm the error.
How should teams measure AI-assisted development?
Measure a small, representative slice of work with the same definitions before and after adoption. A useful dashboard combines delivery speed, rework, correctness and operational outcomes instead of relying on one productivity number.
1. Define the comparison
Choose a task family such as API changes, bug fixes, migrations or documentation tooling. Record repository maturity, language, service criticality, developer experience and the AI tool/version. Compare similar tasks or randomize eligible tasks where practical.
2. Capture time and throughput
- Elapsed time from task start to review-ready change.
- Cycle time from first commit to deployment.
- Tasks completed per developer or team in a fixed period.
- Time spent prompting, inspecting, rewriting and resolving review comments.
Include waiting and rework definitions consistently. A shorter keyboard time is not a gain if review or debugging time expands.
3. Capture acceptance and rework
- Percentage of generated lines or suggestions accepted without modification.
- Number and size of follow-up commits before approval.
- Review-request count and time to approval.
- Reverted changes, reopened tickets and post-merge fixes.
Acceptance rate is descriptive, not a quality score. A low rate may mean the assistant is poor for that task, or that reviewers are appropriately demanding.
4. Measure correctness and stability
- Test pass rates, including independent tests added by reviewers.
- Defects found in review, staging and production, classified by severity.
- Change-failure rate, rollback frequency and time to restore service.
- Performance, security and reliability regressions.
Keep these measures over enough releases to detect delayed failures. The cited studies do not specify a universal observation window, so each team should document its own window and avoid claiming causation from a single incident.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
5. Segment the results
Report results separately for senior and early-career developers, new work and maintenance, low- and high-criticality services, and different languages or frameworks. The Science analysis found a 3.6% estimated quarterly output increase among senior developers but no significant gain among early-career developers; that pattern is a reason to segment, not a rule to apply to every team.
6. Protect the comparison
Keep review standards, release gates and incident reporting unchanged. If one group receives extra training or a different backlog, record that as part of the intervention. Publish uncertainty and sample size with every percentage so a noisy result is not mistaken for a durable effect.

What review process catches AI-assisted defects?
Use the same engineering gates as for human-written code, with extra attention to assumptions and provenance. A practical workflow is:
- State the task and constraints. Describe the desired behavior, interfaces, security boundaries, performance limits and files that may change.
- Ask for a small change. Prefer one coherent diff over a broad request that edits unrelated modules.
- Read the proposal before running it. Check imports, data flow, error paths, authorization and side effects.
- Run fast automated checks. Compile or type-check, lint, run focused tests and inspect warnings.
- Add independent cases. Write tests for boundaries, invalid inputs, permissions, retries and failure recovery that were not supplied by the assistant.
- Review dependencies and configuration. Confirm versions, licenses, secrets handling, environment variables and migration order.
- Use a second human review for high-impact changes. Critical security, financial, privacy and data-loss paths should not rely on one approver.
- Deploy gradually. Use feature flags, canaries or staged rollout where the system supports them; watch logs, metrics and user impact.
- Record outcomes. Link the change to review findings, rework, incidents and rollback decisions so future policy is based on observed results.
This is prudent engineering guidance, not a defect-prevention protocol validated by the cited experiments. Its purpose is to preserve independent checks while teams learn where assistance helps.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does AI affect what developers learn?
Immediate task completion and durable understanding can diverge. Anthropic’s randomized trial, published 29 January 2026, assigned 52 mostly junior software engineers to learn a Python library with or without AI assistance. The AI group scored 17% lower on a near-term mastery quiz covering concepts used minutes earlier; its small speed increase was not statistically significant.
The result does not mean every developer loses understanding. Participants who used AI to ask for explanations or conceptual help showed stronger mastery than those who mainly requested direct answers. For onboarding and training, require people to explain design choices, predict behavior before running code and solve selected problems without assistance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe large observational Science analysis also found different output patterns by seniority. More experienced developers showed the estimated quarterly increase, while early-career developers did not show a significant gain. Pairing assistance with deliberate practice and feedback can address that gap better than measuring completion alone.

What does DORA say about organizational adoption?
DORA’s 2025 report, version 2025.2, cites the 2024 DORA report for a high-adoption environment: 89% of organizations prioritized AI integration and 76% of technologists relied on AI in some part of daily work. Those are adoption figures, not evidence that AI improves code quality or delivery.
The report’s central implementation warning is concise: “AI is a powerful tool, but its success depends on how it’s implemented.” DORA frames AI as an amplifier of organizational strengths and dysfunctions. Clear ownership, reliable tests, fast feedback and manageable architecture give an assistant a safer path; weak controls can let faster changes spread problems more quickly.
When is AI assistance most likely to help?
Use the evidence to form a task-level hypothesis rather than a blanket policy.
Good candidates for a measured pilot
- Well-specified, bounded changes with executable tests.
- Boilerplate, adapters, documentation drafts and repetitive transformations that a reviewer can verify quickly.
- Exploration where the output is disposable and no sensitive data is exposed.
Tasks requiring tighter controls
- Authentication, authorization, cryptography and privacy-sensitive data handling.
- Database migrations, financial calculations, safety-critical logic and irreversible operations.
- Concurrency, distributed-systems coordination and performance-critical paths.
- Changes in mature repositories where implicit contracts are difficult to infer.
For the second group, assistance can still be used for ideas or test generation, but require independent design review, broader testing and staged deployment. Do not choose a specific assistant from these studies alone; they compare settings and outcomes, not equivalent products or policies.
What should a team do if speed rises but defects or rework also rise?
First separate detection from causation. A new review scanner or stricter test suite may increase the number of issues recorded without increasing the underlying defect rate. Compare incident severity, escaped defects, rework time and delivery stability with a consistent baseline.
- Pause expansion for the affected task category, not necessarily the entire program.
- Inspect representative diffs to identify recurring failure modes such as missing edge cases or dependency misuse.
- Update prompts, templates, coding standards and tests to address those patterns.
- Require an additional reviewer or narrower change size for high-risk paths.
- Re-measure after enough comparable work has shipped, documenting tool version and workflow changes.
If cycle time improves while change-failure rate, rollback frequency or restoration time worsens, the net result is not an operational productivity gain. Conversely, a slower individual task may be worthwhile if it reduces incidents or creates maintainable code; the decision should use the outcomes that matter to the service.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best metric for measuring AI developer productivity?
Use a balanced set rather than one score: review-ready cycle time, completed comparable tasks, rework, independent test results, escaped defects and change-failure rate. Report sample size, task type, developer experience and tool version so percentages retain their context.
Should junior developers use AI coding assistants?
They can, but pair direct code generation with explanations, prediction exercises and human feedback. Anthropic’s 2026 trial found lower near-term mastery on average among mostly junior engineers, while explanation-focused use was associated with stronger learning.
How long should a team monitor AI-assisted changes before deciding?
Monitor through multiple comparable releases and include post-deployment incidents, reversions and maintenance work. A single sprint or one successful task cannot reveal delayed defects or account for changes in backlog mix.
Can passing all unit tests prove AI-generated code is safe?
No. Tests demonstrate behavior for covered cases; they do not prove security, performance, maintainability or resilience under untested conditions. Add independent boundary, authorization, integration and operational checks before deployment.
