AI-chip stocks can deliver exceptional growth, but they also carry unusually concentrated risks. Semiconductor demand can swing from shortage to oversupply, a few hyperscale customers can account for a large share of sales, and those same customers may build competing chips. NVIDIA’s reported Data Center revenue rose from $47.525 billion in fiscal 2024 to $193.737 billion in fiscal 2026, yet its fiscal 2026 filing also identified two direct customers representing 22% and 14% of total revenue. The lesson for investors is not that a collapse is inevitable; it is that growth rates, margins and valuations can change quickly when utilization, customer orders or competitive technology shifts.
This guide explains the main risks, shows how they differ among chip designers and manufacturers, and provides a practical framework for evaluating an AI-chip investment after the current boom.
What are the biggest risks in AI-chip investing?
The material risks are semiconductor cyclicality, customer concentration, competition from alternative architectures and customers’ internal chips, manufacturing and fixed-cost exposure, and geographic or policy shocks. These risks interact: a cloud provider that slows capital spending can reduce orders, leave a supplier with underused capacity, and accelerate a move toward an internally designed accelerator.
- Cyclicality: supply-demand imbalances can drive sudden inventory corrections, price erosion and lower factory utilization.
- Customer concentration: losing or delaying one large account can move quarterly revenue and profit disproportionately.
- Substitution: GPUs compete with ASICs, FPGAs, Arm-based systems and custom silicon, often on total cost of ownership rather than peak benchmark speed.
- Manufacturing exposure: foundries and chip designers face different combinations of fixed costs, capacity commitments and access to advanced process technology.
- Geography and policy: export controls, the location of end users and cross-border supply chains can alter which products may be sold.
Annual-report risk sections describe plausible adverse outcomes and historical mechanisms, not a timetable for a downturn. Treat every percentage below as a disclosed figure for the stated fiscal year, not as a forecast.

How does the semiconductor cycle create losses?
Semiconductors are highly cyclical because customers place orders ahead of expected demand, suppliers add capacity and inventory, and demand then normalizes faster than the new supply can be absorbed. AMD’s 2024 Form 10-K describes the industry as “highly cyclical” and links downturns to rapid technological change, wide fluctuations in supply and demand, continuous product introductions, price erosion and weaker economic conditions.
Why over-ordering turns into an inventory correction
During a shortage, distributors and system companies may order extra chips to secure supply. When lead times improve, they can consume existing inventory instead of placing new orders. A chip company then faces lower unit shipments, pressure to discount older products and the possibility of writing down stock that no longer matches current demand.
Why AI infrastructure can amplify the cycle
AI clusters require large, specialized systems and long-lived data-center commitments. If customers commit to capacity before model demand and monetization are proven, a change in deployment plans can leave suppliers with a sharp order pause. The filings do not establish a fixed AI cycle length, so investors should avoid assuming that a boom will last a particular number of quarters.
How fixed costs affect foundry margins
TSMC explains that semiconductor fabrication plants have substantial fixed costs. When wafer starts fall, those costs are spread over fewer units, so utilization declines can reduce gross and operating margins much faster than revenue declines. A foundry can therefore report a disproportionate profit drop even while it remains technologically competitive.
For a chip designer, the analogous leverage appears in research, software and system-development spending that is committed before sales arrive. Compare the cost structure rather than applying one “AI” growth multiple to every company.
How serious is customer concentration?
Customer concentration is measurable in the filings and can be material even for a fast-growing supplier. NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 filing says one direct customer represented 22% of total revenue and another represented 14%. In fiscal 2025, three direct customers represented 12%, 11% and 11%. NVIDIA also states that revenue is concentrated among a limited number of direct and indirect customers and that this trend may continue.

What a large customer can do to a supplier
A major cloud or system customer can support rapid growth by placing large, repeated orders. The same customer can create a revenue shock by delaying a data-center build, switching to another accelerator, negotiating lower prices, or designing a chip internally. A redesign can also affect several reporting periods because qualification and deployment occur in stages.

Why indirect concentration matters
Chip companies often sell through distributors, server makers or original equipment manufacturers. A filing may identify a direct account while the ultimate cloud end user remains indirect. Concentration analysis should therefore include named direct customers, distributor exposure and the possibility that several intermediaries serve the same end customer.
Foundries can be concentrated too
TSMC’s 2024 annual report says its ten largest customers accounted for approximately 68% of net revenue in 2022, 70% in 2023 and 76% in 2024. Its largest customer represented 22% of 2024 revenue. A foundry’s customer list can be diversified by company count yet concentrated by wafer demand and advanced-node requirements.
When reading a concentration percentage, check whether it covers total revenue or a product category, whether customers are direct or indirect, and which fiscal year is being reported. A single percentage is a warning indicator, not a prediction of customer loss.
What happens if cloud companies design their own AI chips?
Cloud providers and large OEMs can reduce purchases from merchant-chip suppliers by developing application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) or other internal accelerators. AMD and Intel both warn in their filings that customers may develop internal chips. Internal silicon does not have to replace every GPU to matter: winning a portion of predictable, high-volume workloads can lower a cloud operator’s external purchases and strengthen its bargaining position.
Where custom chips are most attractive
- Stable workloads: a provider can optimize an ASIC for a known model family or inference pattern.
- High utilization: savings on power, networking or licensing can justify design costs when deployed at scale.
- Supply assurance: internal designs can reduce dependence on a constrained merchant accelerator allocation.
- Software control: a cloud platform can integrate compilers, libraries and scheduling into its own services.
Why merchant chips still matter
General-purpose GPUs and other merchant accelerators offer flexibility as models change. Their software ecosystems, developer familiarity, broad framework support and faster time to market can outweigh an ASIC’s efficiency advantage when workloads are uncertain. Investors should compare performance per dollar, total cost of ownership, software compatibility, supply availability and deployment time rather than relying on one benchmark generation.

How competitive is the AI-chip market?
AMD says the markets for its products are “highly competitive and rapidly evolving.” Its filing identifies NVIDIA’s software ecosystem, pricing, bundling, allocation practices and financial resources as competitive advantages. Intel’s filing broadens the competitive set to GPUs, ASICs, FPGAs, Arm architectures and internally developed cloud or OEM chips.
Competition is more than peak compute
Customers evaluate the complete system: accelerator price, networking, memory, power consumption, cooling, software migration costs, availability and the revenue a deployed cluster can generate. A product that is slower on one benchmark can still win if it is cheaper, easier to obtain or better supported by a customer’s existing code.
Software lock-in cuts both ways
A mature software stack can create switching costs and protect pricing. It can also raise expectations: developers may resist hardware that requires extensive code changes. A rival that supplies compatible tools, cloud instances and migration assistance can gradually weaken that advantage, even without matching every feature immediately.
Product transitions create obsolescence risk
Continuous new introductions mean that today’s high-demand accelerator can be replaced by a more efficient generation. Investors should examine whether revenue depends on one product family, how quickly customers can qualify replacements and whether inventory could become obsolete during a transition.
How exposed are AI-chip companies to data-center spending?
NVIDIA reported Data Center revenue of $47.525 billion in fiscal 2024, $115.186 billion in fiscal 2025 and $193.737 billion in fiscal 2026. These are reported results for the years ended in those fiscal periods, not forecasts. The scale shows why data-center capital spending is central to the investment case and why a pause by a few large buyers could have an outsized effect.
Track customer capital-expenditure plans, cloud utilization, AI-service revenue and model economics together. Capital spending can rise while returns on deployed systems weaken; conversely, better utilization can support demand even when spending growth moderates. Do not substitute a single industry spending estimate for company-specific evidence.

How do geography and export policy change the risk?
NVIDIA reported that customers headquartered outside the United States accounted for 31% of fiscal 2026 revenue. Headquarters are not the same as the location where chips are ultimately deployed: a multinational cloud or server company may buy through a regional entity and operate equipment elsewhere.
Review the latest export-control rules, product classifications and licensing requirements before treating geographic percentages as end-market exposure. Policy changes can restrict a product, require a modified version or delay shipments, while retaliatory measures can affect demand or supply. Because rules and product launches change quickly, use the newest annual and quarterly filings when making an investment decision.
How should investors compare AI-chip business models?
A chip designer, a pure-play foundry and a diversified supplier do not carry the same risks. The following comparison uses disclosures available in the cited annual reports; “not stated” means the company did not provide an exact figure in the supplied material.
| Company | Business model | Largest-customer disclosure | AI or data-center revenue | Fixed-cost intensity | Custom-chip threat | Other exposure to examine |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA | Accelerator and platform designer | 22% and 14% of total revenue from two direct customers in fiscal 2026 | Data Center revenue: $193.737B in fiscal 2026; $115.186B in fiscal 2025; $47.525B in fiscal 2024 | Relies on external manufacturing; software and system investment are significant | Cloud and OEM internal chips, ASICs, AMD, Intel and other alternatives | 31% of fiscal 2026 revenue from customers headquartered outside the United States; export controls and product transitions |
| AMD | Fabless CPU, GPU and adaptive-computing designer | Exact percentage not stated in the supplied material | Exact AI percentage not stated | External foundry dependence; design and software spending committed ahead of sales | Warns that customers may develop internal chips; competes with NVIDIA and other architectures | Semiconductor cyclicality, price erosion, inventory and rapid product change |
| Intel | Diversified processor, accelerator and manufacturing business | Exact percentage not stated | Exact AI percentage not stated | Own-factory investment can increase fixed-cost and utilization risk | GPUs, ASICs, FPGAs, Arm-based designs and customer-developed silicon | Execution, process transitions, product obsolescence and capital intensity |
| TSMC | Contract semiconductor foundry | Largest customer 22%; top ten approximately 76% of 2024 revenue | Exact AI percentage not stated | Very high fab fixed costs; margins are sensitive to utilization | Customer internal chips still require manufacturing, but alternative foundries and process nodes compete | Advanced-node demand, geographic concentration and policy affecting cross-border production |
Use the table as a starting point, then read each company’s latest filing for changes. A disclosed customer percentage is not directly comparable across companies if one reports direct accounts and another includes broader customer groupings.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Reconcile revenue concentration: record the largest-customer percentages, whether they are direct or indirect, and the fiscal period.
- Separate volume from price: look for commentary on units, average selling prices, mix and inventory rather than assuming revenue growth means stronger demand.
- Watch utilization and gross margin: for manufacturers, compare factory loading with margin changes; a small utilization decline can have a large profit effect.
- Map product dependence: identify the share tied to one accelerator family, process node, software stack or system platform.
- Test custom-chip substitution: ask which workloads could move to ASICs, FPGAs, Arm systems or internal cloud designs and what migration costs protect the incumbent.
- Review balance-sheet capacity: check cash, debt, purchase commitments and research spending needed to sustain the roadmap through a downturn.
- Track policy and geography: compare customer headquarters, manufacturing locations and the destinations allowed under current export rules.
Are AI-chip stocks in a bubble?
“Bubble” is not a measurable conclusion from the filings alone. The disclosures establish that growth, concentration and competitive risks are real; they do not establish that current prices will collapse or that demand is fraudulent. Valuation becomes more fragile when investors extrapolate a rapid revenue ramp indefinitely while ignoring customer concentration, fixed costs, substitution and policy limits.

A disciplined approach is to model several cases: continued expansion, a normalization in orders, and a sharper correction caused by inventory or customer redesign. In each case, vary utilization, selling prices, customer share and operating expenses. The objective is to see how much downside the balance sheet and valuation can absorb, not to predict the exact turning point.
What should investors do after the AI boom?
Keep the risk framework active even when quarterly results are strong. Recheck customer percentages, data-center revenue, product mix, inventory, gross margin, capital commitments and export rules at every filing. Diversification across business models can reduce dependence on one buyer, one process node or one architecture, but it does not remove the underlying semiconductor cycle.
The strongest long-term cases will generally combine durable software or system advantages with multiple customers, credible product transitions, manageable fixed costs and enough financial capacity to invest through a downturn. Those qualities matter more than a single quarter’s growth rate.

How often should I check customer concentration in an AI-chip company?
Review it whenever the company files an annual or quarterly report, and after any major product launch or cloud-partnership announcement. Concentration can change quickly when one customer ramps a new platform or pauses an existing build.
Can a foundry avoid AI-chip customer risk by serving many companies?
Not necessarily. A foundry may have many logos but still depend on a few customers for advanced-node wafer volume; TSMC’s top-ten share illustrates this distinction. Examine concentration by revenue, process node and capacity commitment.
Which metrics show that an AI accelerator is becoming commoditized?
Look for falling average selling prices, weaker gross margin, longer inventory days, and customers comparing several suppliers on interchangeable workloads. A rising unit count with declining price and margin can signal that differentiation is narrowing.
Does a cloud provider’s custom chip eliminate the need for merchant GPUs?
Usually not immediately. Custom silicon tends to target stable, high-volume workloads, while merchant GPUs remain useful for changing models, broad developer support and rapid deployment. The risk is a gradual shift in workload share and bargaining power, not necessarily a total replacement.
