Several popular chatbots let you prevent ordinary future conversations from being used to improve their models—but that does not necessarily stop storage, safety processing, or human review. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini each have different controls and exceptions, so check the setting for your account before sharing personal information.
What “not used for training” does—and does not—mean
A training opt-out limits a provider’s use of conversation content to improve models. It is not the same as deleting a conversation or preventing the provider from processing it to deliver the service, protect users, or investigate policy violations. Temporary and private chat modes can still involve retention, and feedback may change how a conversation is handled.
OpenAI’s consumer guidance cautions: “Please do not enter sensitive information that you would not want reviewed or used.” These provider policies describe their stated practices; they are not independent audits or guarantees of suitability for confidential, regulated, or highly sensitive information.

How to stop future chats being used for model improvement
ChatGPT
- In ChatGPT, open Settings and find Data Controls.
- Turn off “Improve the model for everyone.” OpenAI says the setting applies to new conversations; it does not erase prior chats.
- For a chat that should stay out of history and model improvement, start a Temporary Chat. Remember that OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety.
- Avoid submitting feedback on a conversation you do not want considered for model improvement, because feedback may cause the associated conversation to be used.
OpenAI also documents a Privacy Portal option to stop new conversations from being used for model improvement. Check the current controls and wording in your account.

Claude
- In Claude’s account settings, review the Model Improvement control and leave it disabled if you do not want eligible consumer conversations used to improve Claude.
- Use Incognito chat when you want the conversation excluded from model improvement, including when Model Improvement is enabled.
- Review the retention guidance before deleting chats or submitting feedback. Deletion removes a chat from history immediately, but backend removal takes up to 30 days; flagged safety cases and feedback have distinct handling.
Gemini Apps
- Open Gemini Apps Activity controls in your Google Account and turn Keep Activity off to prevent future chats from being used for training, unless you submit feedback.
- If Keep Activity remains on, choose an auto-delete period that suits you: three months, 18 months (the default), 36 months, or no auto-delete.
- Do not treat Keep Activity off as zero storage: future chats are retained for 72 hours, and other Google settings may continue to save data.
Which option should you choose?
- For ordinary personal use: use the provider’s training control, then check the specific exceptions for feedback, safety, and retention.
- For a chat you do not want in history: a temporary mode may help, but it does not necessarily prevent brief storage or safety processing.
- For work data: verify whether your organization’s business plan has separate terms and controls. OpenAI says its business products and API are excluded from model improvement by default unless the organization opts in; do not assume consumer-account rules apply to another provider’s commercial product.
- For confidential or regulated data: do not rely on a consumer opt-out as a confidentiality guarantee. Check your organization’s approved tools and applicable contractual terms before entering it.
What to verify before sharing information
- Confirm the exact account, plan, and setting in use; controls can differ between consumer and business accounts.
- Check whether the setting covers only new chats, and whether feedback or safety review creates exceptions.
- Distinguish model training from chat history, deletion, and retention for service delivery or safety.
- Recheck the provider’s current privacy page and in-product controls. Policies and settings can change, and these policies are vendor descriptions rather than independent verification.
