AI chatbots do keep some conversations, but the duration and use vary by provider, account type, and privacy setting. A deleted chat normally disappears from your visible history first, then is removed from backend systems on the provider’s stated schedule. Safety investigations, legal obligations, human review, de-identification, audits, and training that has already finished can create exceptions. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini all document different defaults, so check the exact product and whether you are using a personal, business, managed-workspace, or API account before entering sensitive information.
Do AI chatbots keep my conversations?
Usually, yes. A chatbot may retain a conversation in your account history, in operational backups, for abuse and safety investigations, or in de-identified datasets used for product improvement. “Delete” is therefore two separate events: removal from the interface and eventual deletion or transformation in the provider’s systems.
Retention also depends on the edition you use. A personal consumer account can have different training and deletion rules from a business workspace or an API project. Temporary or incognito modes generally reduce retention, but they do not mean the provider receives no record at all; short-lived copies may remain for security, reliability, or legal reasons.

Does ChatGPT use my chats to train the model?
For a personal ChatGPT account, model-improvement use is controlled by your account setting. OpenAI provides controls for model improvement, data export, archiving, chat deletion, memory deletion, and account deletion. Turning improvement off is the relevant choice when you do not want eligible new personal-account content used for that purpose.
What does Temporary Chat change?
OpenAI states: “If you enable Temporary Chat in ChatGPT, those conversations will not appear in your history or be used to improve OpenAI’s models.” The same policy says Temporary Chats are automatically deleted within 30 days. The 30-day period is an ordinary policy timeline, not a promise that no copy can exist sooner for security or legal reasons.
Are work and school ChatGPT accounts different?
Yes. OpenAI says, “By default, OpenAI does not use content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces to train its models.” A workspace can still have administrators, retention rules, security logs, and legal holds, so do not treat a managed account as a private personal notebook.
How long does Claude keep deleted chats?
Anthropic says a deleted consumer conversation is removed from your chat history immediately and deleted from backend storage within 30 days. That distinction explains why a conversation can vanish from the interface while the provider is still completing backend deletion.

When can Claude retain data longer?
If model improvement is enabled, Anthropic says de-identified data may be retained for up to five years. Inputs and outputs flagged for usage-policy violations may be retained for up to two years, while trust-and-safety classification scores for flagged sessions may be retained for up to seven years. These are separate purposes and timelines, not an indication that every ordinary chat is stored for seven years.
What happens if I turn model improvement off?
Anthropic says that when you turn off the model-improvement setting, it will not use your previous or new chats or coding sessions for future model training. The qualification matters: the setting does not remove data from training runs already under way or from models that have already been trained. De-identification, safety review, and legal or security retention can also follow their own rules.
Can Google Gemini employees see my conversations?
Some Gemini conversations can be reviewed by human reviewers, and Google says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data may be retained for up to three years. Review is not described as universal access to every conversation; it is a separate process used for quality, safety, or policy work under Google’s controls.

Gemini Apps Activity auto-delete defaults to 18 months. Google lists alternatives of 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite. Choose the shortest period that still supports the continuity you need, and remember that changing auto-delete does not necessarily erase data already separated for safety or review.

How does Temporary Chat work in Gemini?
Google says temporary chats, and chats made with Keep Activity turned off, are retained for 72 hours for context and safety. Temporary chats are not used to train Google’s AI models. If you submit feedback while activity is off, that feedback can still include recent chat context and uploaded files, so inspect the material attached to feedback before sending it.
Does deleting a chat remove it from the AI model?
Not necessarily. Deleting a chat generally schedules the conversation for removal from account history and backend storage; it cannot reliably reverse a model-training run that already incorporated the information. Anthropic explicitly says turning model improvement off does not remove data from training already under way or models already trained. Similar practical limits apply whenever a provider has produced de-identified training data, aggregate safety signals, or backups before deletion completed.
Deletion can still be worthwhile: it removes the source conversation from normal account access and starts the provider’s ordinary deletion clock. Also remove saved memories or profile data separately when the product offers a memory control; deleting a chat and deleting a stored memory are different actions.
What is the safest way to ask a chatbot a sensitive question?
The safest approach is to minimize what you disclose, select the strongest available privacy mode, and assume that anything submitted may be retained temporarily for security. Use this sequence before pressing Send:

- Classify the information. Do not paste passwords, authentication codes, private keys, full medical records, unreleased financial results, government-identification numbers, or another person’s confidential data.
- Remove identifying details. Replace names, account numbers, exact dates, addresses, and unique case numbers with invented placeholders. Keep only the facts needed for the answer.
- Choose the account deliberately. For work material, use the organization’s approved business or managed workspace and follow its retention policy. Do not move confidential work into a personal account merely because it is more convenient.
- Disable model improvement when available. On personal services, use the provider’s model-improvement or training control before starting the conversation.
- Use temporary mode for one-off questions. Temporary Chat or Gemini temporary mode can keep the conversation out of normal history, but read the stated retention period and exceptions first.
- Limit attachments and feedback. Files and screenshots can contain hidden metadata or unrelated names. Feedback submissions may include recent context and uploads, including when activity is off.
- Delete both conversation and memory records. After receiving the answer, delete the chat and inspect any separate memory, personalization, export, or shared-link controls.
- Record the policy you relied on. For regulated or contractual work, save the provider’s current privacy wording and your organization’s approval, because settings and retention periods can change.
What changes for business, API, and managed-workspace users?
Business and managed-workspace terms are not interchangeable with consumer terms. A workspace may exclude content from training by default while allowing administrators to set retention, access, audit, or legal-hold rules. Those controls can preserve records after an employee deletes a conversation from their own view.
API traffic is also governed by the API product’s contract and logging settings rather than by the consumer chat interface. Before sending production data, confirm the API-specific data-use, retention, abuse-monitoring, and deletion terms in the contract or administrator console. If the documentation does not state a period, treat the period as unknown rather than assuming it matches a consumer app.

- Safety and abuse prevention: Providers may retain flagged prompts, outputs, scores, or related identifiers beyond ordinary deletion.
- Legal obligations: A deletion request may be delayed or narrowed by a court order, regulatory duty, fraud investigation, or legal hold.
- Human review: A limited sample or flagged session may be inspected by trained reviewers, with a separate retention schedule.
- Backups and propagation: Copies can persist until backup cycles and deletion jobs complete, even after the visible chat is gone.
- De-identification: A provider may remove direct identifiers while retaining transformed data for improvement, subject to its stated period.
- Completed training: Removing the source record does not reconstruct an earlier model or guarantee that learned statistical patterns disappear.
These exceptions do not make deletion meaningless; they explain why “deleted” should be read as a process with a normal timeline and defined carve-outs, not as an instant universal eraser.
How should I choose between the privacy settings?

What should I check after changing a setting?
- Confirm the setting applies to the account and product you are actually using, not another signed-in profile.
- Check whether it affects new conversations only or also previously stored chats.
- Look for separate controls for chat history, memory, activity, feedback, shared links, exports, and account deletion.
- Verify the provider’s stated deletion period and list of safety, legal, review, backup, and training exceptions.
- For a work account, ask the administrator how long audit logs and legal holds last.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a chatbot provider identify me from a de-identified conversation?
De-identification removes or separates direct identifiers, but it is not the same as guaranteed anonymity. Unique facts, uploaded documents, timestamps, account metadata, or combinations of details can still make a session recognizable to the provider or an authorized reviewer.

Does turning off chat history stop safety monitoring?
No. The documented temporary and activity-off modes still allow short retention for context and safety. Providers can also retain material needed to investigate abuse, policy violations, fraud, or legal requests.
Should I delete a chatbot account or only individual chats?
Delete individual chats when you need to remove selected conversations while keeping the account. Account deletion is broader, but it can affect exports, subscriptions, shared workspaces, memories, and records that a provider must preserve for legal or security reasons.
Are uploaded files treated differently from typed prompts?
They can be covered by the same conversation policy, but files often contain additional metadata, embedded names, previous revisions, or unrelated pages. Review an attachment separately and delete it wherever the product provides a file, conversation, or workspace control.
