To compare devices, match the benchmark, version and workload, then check how repeatable the results are and whether performance holds up under heat or extended use. AI scores need the same scrutiny: the model, dataset, accuracy target and software-and-hardware setup all shape the result.
What does a mobile benchmark score mean?
A benchmark runs a defined workload and reports how a device handled it. The result is evidence about that test—not a universal rating of the phone. A CPU-focused score, for example, does not establish gaming performance, battery life, camera quality or sustained speed.
Start with the question you want answered. For gaming, use a graphics workload; for common productivity tasks, use a productivity benchmark; for AI inference, inspect the AI benchmark’s models and rules. Compare results only when the tests and versions are compatible.
Which benchmark matches the task?
CPU and general-purpose work
CPU and general-purpose benchmarks compare defined processing workloads. They can help show how devices handle those operations, but a single CPU result cannot stand in for every aspect of performance.

Graphics and gaming
3DMark uses graphics and computational workloads designed to measure gaming performance. It is available on Android and Apple devices as well as computer platforms. Choose a test appropriate for the hardware; UL describes its scores as useful for comparing similar systems.
Everyday productivity
PCMark for Android is intended to model common tasks. Its Work 3.0 workload includes web browsing, video editing, writing, and photo editing. UL says Work 3.0 scores are not comparable with Work 2.0 or Work 1.0, so a version match is essential.

Battery drain
PCMark for Android Work 3.0 can loop its productivity workload while the battery drains. The battery test begins at 80% charge or more and stops below 20%. Because it can run for many hours, the result describes that workload and those test conditions—not a universal estimate of how long a person’s phone will last.
Mobile AI inference
AI performance depends on the model being run, the dataset, the quality metric and the software-and-hardware stack. The 2020 MLPerf Mobile Inference Benchmark paper describes an open-source framework designed to evaluate performance and accuracy across mobile AI hardware and software using standardized models, datasets, quality metrics and run rules. It is useful for understanding what an AI benchmark should document, not for inferring current device rankings from a 2020 paper.

How should you compare two phones or tablets?
- Match the test. Confirm the benchmark name, version, workload, operating-system context and score type. A PCMark Work 3.0 result is not directly comparable to Work 1.0 or Work 2.0.
- Choose a workload that reflects your use. Match gaming to graphics, daily tasks to productivity, battery drain to a battery test, and AI inference to the relevant model and quality target.
- Record the conditions. Note the software and update state, performance mode, background activity, device temperature or cooling interval, and whether the figure is one run or a repeated result.
- Look beyond the best run for sustained use. For long gaming or work sessions, repeated or stress-test evidence can reveal whether performance falls as the device heats up. Compare that with the highest score rather than treating the peak as typical sustained performance.
- Check the benchmark’s integrity and documentation. Look for a transparent workload and any disclosure of benchmark-specific optimization; a score can be misleading if a device behaves differently when it recognizes the test.
How to run a fair personal comparison
A casual comparison can be useful if you keep the setup consistent. UL’s mobile benchmarking guidance recommends testing in the same location at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and other heat sources. Close background apps, disable notifications and repeat runs when results are inconsistent.
- Install available device updates and select the same benchmark version and workload on both devices.
- Use the same location and comparable room-temperature conditions; keep devices out of direct sunlight and away from other heat sources.
- Close background apps and disable notifications before running the test.
- Run the same workload on each device. If results vary, let the device cool before another run and repeat the test.
- For a more controlled procedure, UL’s expert process waits 15 minutes before a run and repeats it at least three times. Treat this as a controlled-testing recommendation, not a requirement for every casual comparison.
UL says score precision is usually better than 3% under controlled conditions, but individual results can fall outside that range. Multitasking operating systems and inconsistent device performance are among the reasons a run may vary. A personal test should therefore not be presented as lab-grade precision.

Why peak and sustained scores can differ
Phones may reduce performance to manage heat. A device that starts a test cool can produce a higher score than it does after repeated runs or a long session. Letting a phone cool between runs helps distinguish a fresh-device result from performance after heat has built up.
UL notes that temperature and multitasking can produce multiple performance ranges. User-submitted results may be lower than an app’s listed score when a device is hot or other apps are running. A performance-range chart can help show how much results vary under less ideal conditions; for demanding, extended use, that spread may matter as much as the best score.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan a benchmark score be misleading?
Yes. UL’s Benchmark Rules identify app-specific behavior as a threat to fair comparisons: a device that recognizes a benchmark and changes its behavior for that app may earn a score that does not reflect ordinary app performance. UL’s published examples include hidden performance modes and app-specific boosts. Prefer transparent methodology and disclosed testing behavior rather than assuming every result is directly comparable.
Even a valid benchmark cannot reproduce every person’s apps, network, environment or settings. Treat a score as evidence about its stated workload, and use sustained results and test conditions to judge how relevant it is to your own use.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before trusting an AI score
- Does the result name the AI model, dataset and quality metric?
- Are the benchmark version, run rules and software-and-hardware stack documented?
- Is the comparison between compatible devices using the same workload implementation?
- Are performance and accuracy both relevant to the task being compared?
- Are repeated or sustained results available, rather than only a best-case run?
