Secure an AI agent by limiting its tools and data, requiring approval for consequential or irreversible actions, enforcing those decisions in the execution layer, and keeping tamper-resistant traces of each run. A useful policy is risk-based rather than universal: a read-only reporting agent can usually run with fewer interruptions than an agent that changes infrastructure, handles money, or communicates externally. The controls below translate guidance from OWASP, NIST, and OpenAI into settings your security, IT, and engineering teams can implement and review.

What security settings should an AI agent have?

Start with four controls: least-privilege permissions, risk-matched approval gates, independent execution-time authorization, and an agent-aware audit trail. Configure them together. A narrowly scoped tool grant reduces the damage of a prompt injection or a mistaken plan; an approval gate catches high-impact actions; execution checks stop a forged or stale approval; and structured logs make the result investigable.

  • Tool and resource scope: permit only the tools, APIs, repositories, folders, records, and environments needed for the assigned task.
  • Access mode: distinguish read-only operations from writes, administrative changes, and destructive commands.
  • Approval policy: require explicit human authorization for security-sensitive, externally visible, financially significant, privileged, or irreversible actions.
  • Enforcement point: validate the actor, exact target, normalized parameters, approval state, and policy version where the action actually executes.
  • Traceability: correlate the request, plan, tool calls, approvals, results, errors, and state changes with run and trace identifiers.
  • Log protection: restrict access, protect integrity, set retention deliberately, and keep secrets such as session tokens out of ordinary logs.

OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet emphasizes minimum required tools and explicit authorization for sensitive operations. Its agentic-AI threat guidance also says autonomous agents should follow the same change-management controls as human administrators, with extra automated guardrails.

How should I scope an AI agent’s permissions?

Define permissions per tool and per resource, not as one broad role for the entire agent. Give the smallest practical set that completes the task, then separate trust levels so a monitoring agent cannot automatically inherit deployment or identity-management powers.

Separate read, write, and administrative capabilities

Create distinct operations for viewing data, creating or editing data, changing permissions, and deleting or disabling resources. A monitoring agent that reads metrics and opens tickets should not receive write access to configuration or permission systems unless that is its documented purpose. If a workflow occasionally needs a write, expose a narrowly parameterized write tool rather than a general shell or unrestricted API credential.

Constrain the resource boundary

Bind each tool to explicit resources: named repositories instead of an entire source-control organization, a defined cloud account or project instead of every account, and selected database tables or records instead of a production-wide connection. Include environment boundaries such as development, staging, and production. Treat a request to expand scope as a separate, higher-risk action.

Use separate tool sets for different trust levels

Maintain distinct profiles for, for example, an analyst, a support assistant, and an operations agent. Do not let the model choose its own role or silently add tools. Unknown or newly introduced tools should not inherit the lowest-risk treatment; the OWASP example risk pattern places unknown tools in a higher-risk category that requires review.

Check authorization for every invocation

A risk label is not permission. The component executing the call must still verify that the requesting identity is authorized for that specific tool, resource, operation, and environment. Recheck authorization after a plan is generated and immediately before execution so a role change or revoked credential takes effect.

When should an AI agent ask for approval?

Require approval when an action could materially affect security, availability, money, privacy, legal obligations, external users, or durable state. Let low-impact, reversible reads proceed unattended when their access is already authorized. The following matrix is an illustrative policy pattern, not a universal severity standard.

Action class Typical examples Suggested handling
Low impact, reversible read Query approved metrics, inspect a ticket, read a designated repository Unattended execution can be appropriate; retain the event in the trace.
Bounded write Draft a ticket, update a noncritical record, create a pull request without merging Permit only within named resources; approval can be conditional on local policy.
Security or permission change Alter firewall rules, identity roles, secrets access, retention, or authentication settings Require explicit human approval and verify the exact parameters at execution.
Operationally high impact Deploy to production, stop a service, change infrastructure, modify a shared configuration Use an approval gate tied to the target, change ticket, actor, and expiry.
External or financial action Send a customer-facing message, publish content, issue a refund, place an order Require review by an authorized person; show the final payload, recipient, and amount.
Destructive or irreversible action Delete data, revoke access at scale, purge logs, rotate or destroy a key Require explicit approval, state reversibility, and add a recovery or rollback plan where one exists.

For security-relevant configuration, permission, and infrastructure changes, OWASP Cornucopia’s agentic-AI guidance calls for explicit human approval and recommends declaring reversibility in the action definition. Do not ask the model to decide at runtime whether its own operation is reversible; encode that property in policy metadata.

Prevent approval fatigue

NIST’s discussion of agent identity warns that excessive prompts can condition people to approve reflexively. Gate meaningful risk, not every harmless read. Group a bounded set of equivalent low-impact operations only when the scope, target, and expiry are clear; never use batching to hide a high-impact step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I enforce an approval gate safely?

Treat the agent’s proposal and the authorization decision as separate records. A user clicking “approve” should authorize one normalized action, not whatever the model later substitutes.

  1. Generate a proposal: record the tool, operation, target, parameters, expected effect, risk class, reversibility, and initiating identity.
  2. Normalize what will execute: resolve aliases, expand defaults, canonicalize paths and identifiers, and display the final payload to the approver.
  3. Authenticate the approver: verify that the person or service is authorized for this risk class and environment.
  4. Bind the decision: attach an approval identifier to the actor, tool, target, normalized parameters, policy version, timestamp, and an expiry time.
  5. Revalidate at execution: the executor checks authorization, approval scope, expiry, risk classification, and current policy immediately before the tool call.
  6. Prevent replay: make approval artifacts single-use or otherwise replay-protected when an operation could be repeated harmfully.
  7. Fail closed: deny the action if risk classification, policy lookup, approval validation, or required audit logging is unavailable.
  8. Record the outcome: write success, denial, timeout, partial completion, and returned error details to the same trace.

This design prevents a common flaw: a planner labels an action “low risk,” and the executor treats that label as permission. OWASP specifically distinguishes classification from authorization; execution must perform its own checks.

What should an AI agent audit log record?

Log enough context to reconstruct what was requested, what the agent proposed, what it attempted, who approved it, and what actually happened. Use structured events rather than a single free-form transcript so investigators and detection systems can query them.

Event area Fields to capture Why it matters
Request context Run ID, trace ID, initiating identity, time, tenant or environment, relevant prompt or request context Establishes who initiated the work and connects related steps.
Planning Plan or task version, selected tools, risk class, reversibility, policy version Shows what the agent intended before execution.
Tool invocation Tool name and version, target resource, normalized parameters, start and end time Provides an exact record of the attempted operation.
Approval Required or not, approver identity, approval ID, decision, timestamp, expiry, bound parameters Proves whether consent covered this exact action.
Authorization and policy Allow or deny result, applicable rule, authentication result, policy lookup status Explains enforcement decisions and policy changes.
Outcome Tool result summary, status code, state change, error, retry, rollback, partial completion Lets responders determine impact and recovery needs.
External controls Network proxy allow or deny, MCP server use, sandbox or boundary events Captures actions outside the model’s immediate transcript.

OWASP’s Securing Agentic Applications guidance describes structured logs for plans, tool calls with parameters and results, validation, human-in-the-loop interactions, errors, and state changes, with trace IDs across steps. OpenAI describes a product-specific example: Codex can export OpenTelemetry events for prompts, tool approval decisions, tool results, MCP server usage, and network proxy allow or deny events to centralized SIEM or compliance systems. That example demonstrates a telemetry pattern, not a guarantee that every platform exposes identical fields.

How can I protect agent logs without losing useful evidence?

Apply the same confidentiality and integrity discipline to agent traces that you apply to other security logs. Restrict log access by role, monitor access to the logging system, and use immutable or integrity-protected storage for sensitive deployments. Preserve event ordering and clock information so a reviewer can distinguish a proposal, approval, execution, and result.

Redact secrets before storage

Do not put session tokens, API keys, private keys, passwords, or bearer credentials in ordinary logs. Prefer identifiers, hashes, or secret-manager references. Redact sensitive prompt content and tool parameters when they contain personal, regulated, or customer data, while retaining enough metadata to establish what class of action occurred.

Keep application-level records

Do not assume a model or tool provider retains the records your organization needs. OWASP notes that providers may not maintain the deployment owner’s logs, so the application should emit its own structured events and export them to the organization’s approved monitoring or compliance platform.

Set retention and access deliberately

Choose retention, deletion, residency, and legal-hold rules with your security, privacy, and compliance owners. Separate broad operational telemetry from restricted prompt content, and test that investigators can retrieve a complete trace without granting them access to unrelated tenants or secrets.

How do I design a practical agent security workflow?

Use a staged workflow that turns policy into enforceable configuration rather than relying on written guidance alone.

  1. Inventory actions: list every tool, endpoint, resource, side effect, data type, and environment the agent could reach.
  2. Classify impact: mark each action’s confidentiality, integrity, availability, financial, external-communication, and reversibility consequences.
  3. Create profiles: assign the minimum read, write, and administrative permissions for each job role or agent.
  4. Define gates: map risk classes to unattended execution, one-person approval, or stronger change-management review.
  5. Implement an execution broker: centralize authorization, parameter normalization, approval validation, rate limits, and fail-closed behavior.
  6. Instrument traces: emit consistent run, trace, tool, approval, policy, and outcome events before enabling autonomy.
  7. Test abuse and failure paths: attempt prompt injection, parameter substitution, expired approvals, revoked roles, unavailable policy services, duplicate requests, and log-service outages.
  8. Review exceptions: document every broader permission, bypass, or emergency path with an owner, scope, expiry, and review date.

How should I compare two AI-agent security implementations?

Compare control properties, not marketing claims or model names. A useful review asks whether each implementation can demonstrate the following evidence.

Axis Questions to ask
Permission scope Are tools and resources task-limited? Are read-only, write, and administrative operations distinct?
Approval policy Which risk levels and irreversible actions require review? How are unknown tools handled? Does approval expire and bind to exact parameters?
Enforcement Does an independent execution component check authorization, and does every dependency failure deny the action?
Traceability Can you correlate initiating context, plans, tool calls, approvals, results, errors, and state changes across a run?
Log protection Are integrity, access, retention, redaction, and secret handling defined and tested?
Usability Does the policy avoid low-value prompts that encourage reflexive approval while preserving gates for meaningful impact?

What commonly goes wrong, and how do I fix it?

The agent has a broad administrator credential

Replace it with task-specific tools and resource-scoped roles. Separate read and write paths, then require approval for the remaining high-impact operations.

Deployment checklist

  • Each agent has a documented purpose, owner, environment, and expiration or review date.
  • Every tool is listed with allowed operations and named resources.
  • Read, write, administrative, and destructive capabilities are separated.
  • Unknown tools default to review instead of inheriting low risk.
  • Risk and reversibility are declared in policy metadata.
  • Approval binds to identity, tool, target, normalized parameters, policy version, time, and expiry.
  • The execution layer rechecks authorization and fails closed on missing dependencies.
  • Traces include request context, plans, tool calls, approvals, policy decisions, results, errors, and state changes.
  • Secrets are excluded or redacted, and log access and integrity are controlled.
  • Teams test prompt injection, replay, stale approvals, revoked access, duplicate execution, and logging outages.
  • Approval volume is reviewed for fatigue without weakening high-impact controls.

The strongest configuration is not the one with the most prompts or the broadest log. It is the one that gives each agent only the authority it needs, pauses when consequences justify a human decision, verifies that decision at the point of action, and leaves a trustworthy record for the people responsible for the system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a read-only AI agent run without human approval?

Often, yes, when its tools are genuinely read-only, resources are scoped, and the data exposure is acceptable under your policy. It should still be authorized per invocation and fully traced; a read can become high impact if it exports sensitive data or reaches an unapproved environment.

Should approval be required for every tool call in a multi-step plan?

Not necessarily. Gate the consequential step or a tightly bounded set of equivalent actions, and show the complete normalized scope to the approver. Requiring approval for harmless reads can create the fatigue that NIST warns may lead to reflexive approvals.

What if an agent changes its plan after approval?

Treat the changed plan as a new proposal. Because approval should bind to the exact tool, target, and normalized parameters, any material change must be reclassified and reapproved before execution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do audit logs need to store the full user prompt?

Not always. Store enough request context to reconstruct intent, but redact secrets and minimize personal or regulated content; a policy may retain a reference, hash, or classified summary while keeping restricted prompt text in a separately controlled store.

How should emergency agent actions be handled?

Create a separate, time-limited emergency path with an authorized operator, narrow scope, stronger monitoring, and mandatory post-action review. Do not make emergency behavior a silent bypass of normal authorization or logging.
