Before connecting an AI agent to email, files, a calendar, or another account, check exactly what it can read, what it can change or send, and whether you must approve consequential actions. Grant only the tools and access the task needs; for a summarization task, read-only access may be enough. These steps can limit the harm from mistakes or manipulated content, but they cannot guarantee that prompt injection will be stopped.
The central question is not simply whether an agent is advertised as secure. It is whether its permissions and operating rules give it more power than your task requires—and what could happen if it misunderstands an instruction or encounters hostile content.
How can an AI agent put a connected account at risk?
An AI agent can process information from one place and use a connected tool to act somewhere else. For example, it might read an email and then use a mail integration to draft or send a reply. If the content it reads influences the agent in an unsafe way, the consequences depend partly on which actions its tools and permissions allow.
Prompt injection is an attempt to manipulate an AI system by supplying instructions in content it processes. A direct prompt injection comes from the user’s input. An indirect prompt injection can be embedded in material the agent retrieves or handles, such as a webpage, document, email, database record, or API response. The user may not have typed or even noticed the instruction.

That does not mean every malicious instruction will work, or that connecting an account automatically compromises it. The risk involves a chain: untrusted content influences the agent; the agent has a relevant tool or permission; and safeguards do not prevent the resulting action. Reducing available access limits what the agent can do if another defense fails.
OWASP describes excessive agency as a risk involving one or more of three factors: excessive functionality, excessive permissions, and excessive autonomy. Those are separate choices to examine—not interchangeable labels for the same problem. See OWASP’s LLM06:2025 guidance on excessive agency.
What should I check before connecting my accounts?
Compare the requested access with the task, then look for ways to reduce what the agent can reach or do. The questions below are practical checks grounded in security guidance, not a universal certification checklist: controls and labels vary between providers, and there is no established standard consumer approval interface in the sources cited here.
| Check | What to inspect | Safer choice when it works |
|---|---|---|
| Task-to-access match | Does each requested account, data set, and action directly support the job? | Connect only the accounts and data needed for that task. |
| Read versus write | Can the agent send, delete, edit, share, or change settings? | Use read-only access when the task only requires reading, such as summarizing messages. |
| Tool list | What actions can the integration or extension perform? Does it bundle functions the task does not need? | Disable or omit unnecessary integrations and functions. |
| Approval | Can the agent carry out an action without showing you what it will do? | Require review of the exact action before consequential changes or communications. |
| Scope and duration | Can access be limited to selected data or a defined period? Can you revoke it? | Choose narrower and shorter access if the provider offers it, and know where to withdraw authorization. |
| Monitoring and records | Can you see the agent’s actions and investigate unusual activity? | Prefer access with useful activity visibility and a way to stop or disable the agent. |
Separate the three kinds of agency
- Functionality: Which tools and operations are available? A mail extension that includes send or delete functions gives the agent capabilities that a read-only summarizer does not need.
- Permissions: Which data and actions does the connected account authorize? A broad account grant can expose more information or allow more changes than a task requires.
- Autonomy: Can the agent complete an action on its own, or must a person review and approve it? Approval can reduce the chance that an error becomes an external action.
OWASP’s mailbox example recommends a mail extension that only reads messages and a read-only OAuth scope when the task is summarization. For agent-drafted messages, it recommends that a person review and press send. That is a concrete example of reducing functionality, permission, and autonomy together; it is not a claim that every provider offers those exact controls.

How do I inspect an authorization request?
Review the consent screen before approving it, but do not assume that a familiar account name or a single broad permission label tells the whole story. Read the listed data and actions, check the agent’s own tool settings, and stop if you cannot determine what access means or how to undo it.
- Write down the task. Be specific: “summarize selected messages” is different from “manage my mailbox.” A clear task makes unnecessary access easier to spot.
- Inspect the agent’s requested tools. Look for connected integrations and their available operations. Ask whether a task that only reads needs functions for sending, deleting, sharing, or editing.
- Read the account’s permission description. Identify whether access is read-only or includes changes, and whether it covers selected data or a broader account area. The exact wording and available controls depend on the provider.
- Reduce scope where possible. Remove unneeded tools or accounts, choose a narrower data selection, and prefer read-only authorization if it completes the task. Do not grant broader access simply because the agent might use it later.
- Set approval boundaries. Determine whether you see the exact proposed action before it happens, and whether the agent can act without confirmation. Do not treat a general confirmation or setup-time consent as review of every future action.
- Check how to stop access. Find the provider’s way to disconnect or revoke the agent’s authorization before relying on it. If the control is unclear, pause and consult the provider’s own account-security help.
- After connecting, review activity. Use whatever activity history or notifications the provider makes available. Check that the agent is performing the intended task and not taking actions outside it.
These steps are a decision process, not a set of universal menu names: the reviewed guidance does not establish consistent interface labels or a standard consent screen across consumer services.
Which actions should require human approval?
Require a person to inspect the exact action before the agent does something that could affect another person, money, access, or important records. Human approval is most useful when it occurs immediately before the action—not only when the account is first connected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Sending messages or forwarding sensitive information.
- Deleting or materially editing records or files.
- Making payments or initiating other financial actions.
- Changing who can access an account, file, or service.
- Changing account recovery or security settings.
- Running bulk operations, where one mistaken instruction could affect many items.
For a draft, inspect the recipient, content, attachments, and any quoted or forwarded material before approving. For a deletion or bulk change, review the target items and scope. A control that merely says “approve” is less useful if it does not reveal what the agent is about to do.

OWASP’s mailbox scenario and mitigations specifically recommend a person reviewing and pressing send on messages drafted by the agent. The broader OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet also recommends human involvement in high-risk actions. Approval does not make an action infallible, but it can give a person a chance to catch an inappropriate recipient, target, or operation before execution.
What should I ask about emails, documents, and other untrusted content?
Ask how the agent handles instructions embedded in material it reads, and how it prevents that material from authorizing tool use. Treat the answer as a design question, not as proof that injection is impossible.
A useful question is: “When the agent reads an email or document that tells it to take an action, how does it distinguish that content from instructions I have authorized?” You can also ask whether tool actions are checked against the user’s task, whether sensitive operations require confirmation, and whether inputs and outputs are validated. OWASP recommends input and output validation, but validation is a risk-reduction measure, not a complete cure for prompt injection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Be wary of an answer that treats a prompt-injection filter, a system prompt, or a general safety claim as a guarantee. The important practical issue is what the agent can still do if untrusted content influences it. A design that limits tools and account authority can constrain the impact even when content handling does not work as intended.

How can I limit damage and check behavior over time?
Least privilege and approval controls are only part of the picture. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet recommends reducing unnecessary capabilities, constraining action scope, applying rate limits, isolating memory and sessions, validating data before persistence, testing abuse cases, and monitoring behavior.
Bound the actions
Where available, limit how many actions the agent can take or how broad an operation can be. A bounded task is easier to inspect than open-ended authority to act across an account. Check whether the agent can repeat an action, operate in bulk, or use one connected service to affect another.
Test realistic abuse cases
Test the agent with content that is untrusted for the task—such as a document or message containing instructions unrelated to the user’s request—and observe whether it stays within its assigned role. Include cases involving sending, deletion, sharing, or other actions the agent is permitted to perform. OWASP recommends structured adversarial testing, particularly after material changes to tools, prompts, retrieval, memory, policies, or providers.

Monitor after changes
Recheck permissions and behavior when you add an integration, change the task, or enable a new capability. Monitor activity for unexpected operations, and know how to pause the agent or revoke access. If the provider does not offer the scope, visibility, or approval you need for a consequential task, do not connect that account for that task.

What is established about AI agent security standards?
Agent security is an active area of work, not a settled set of universal consumer rules. On January 12, 2026, NIST’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation issued a request for information about securing AI agent systems, identifying risks from interactions with adversarial data, insecure models, and harmful actions even without adversarial inputs. Its May 18, 2026 summary of responses reported broad agreement among commenters that agent security presents novel threats and existing cybersecurity practices need adaptation.
NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence also published a concept paper on software-agent identity and authorization on February 5, 2026. These publications signal ongoing work; they are not finalized instructions telling every consumer which exact consent options a product must provide. The practical checks remain useful without assuming that a universal interface or certification exists.
The official materials cited here do not provide a prevalence rate for consumer account compromises caused specifically by AI agents. NIST’s summary reports stakeholder views about threats and adaptation needs, not an incident count. A numerical likelihood should not be inferred from those statements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does read-only access protect my private information?
Read-only access limits an agent’s ability to change account data, but it still permits access to whatever information the granted scope covers. It is not a privacy guarantee; limit the data the agent can read as well as the actions it can take.
Can an AI agent provider guarantee that prompt injection will never work?
The official guidance cited here does not establish a filter or provider claim as a guarantee against prompt injection. Ask what controls limit tool use and action authority if untrusted content influences the agent.
Are NIST’s AI agent security materials final consumer rules?
No. The cited NIST materials are an RFI, a summary of responses, and a concept paper—evidence of active work rather than finalized universal consumer requirements.
How common are account compromises caused by AI agents?
The official sources cited here do not establish a prevalence rate for consumer account compromise specifically caused by AI agents. NIST’s May 18, 2026 summary describes stakeholder views on emerging threats, not an incident count.
