Secure an AI agent by limiting what it can do outside the model: give it only the tools and data its task requires, isolate any code it runs, restrict network access, keep secrets outside its execution environment, and require review before sensitive actions. Prompts can guide behavior, but enforceable controls in the application and execution environment define the agent’s actual authority.
These controls address different risks. A sandbox does not decide whether an action is appropriate; human approval does not protect credentials that code can already read; and a tool restriction does not provide an audit trail. A practical design combines boundaries, checks, review, and records of what happened.
What does AI agent security mean?
AI agent security means controlling the actions an agent can take and the resources it can reach—not simply asking it to behave safely. An agent’s effective capabilities come from the model together with its instructions, tools, credentials, files, network routes, and connected environment. If a tool can change a record or send a message, the application that exposes that tool determines whether the agent can attempt that side effect.
This distinction matters because an instruction is not an access-control mechanism. A prompt might say “do not edit customer records,” but if the agent has a broadly authorized editing tool, the instruction alone does not enforce that limit. A stronger design gives the agent a narrowly scoped capability and checks the requested action at the point where it would be executed.

OpenAI’s official materials offer examples of controls for its own platforms and practices. They are useful implementation guidance, not a universal standard or independent comparison of agent vendors. The principles below apply as design questions, but the exact controls available depend on the platform and how it is deployed.
How do you secure an AI agent?
Start by mapping the task to the smallest set of permissions and resources needed to complete it. Then enforce those limits in the tools, application, and execution environment—not only in the agent’s instructions.
- Define the task and its boundaries. List the data the agent must read, the actions it must perform, and any outcomes that should require a person. Separate necessary actions from convenient but unnecessary capabilities.
- Scope tools and data. Expose only the tools and files needed for the task. Where the surrounding system allows it, keep read access separate from write or action permissions. For a tool that changes data, define which action is allowed and validate its arguments and target resource before execution.
- Isolate agent-directed execution. Run generated code or other agent-directed work in isolated compute. Restrict outbound network traffic to approved destinations, and consider where each connector or tool makes its connections.
- Keep credentials outside the execution boundary. Assume code can read values available in its environment. Keep application keys and third-party secrets out of that environment; where access is needed, a trusted service or proxy can make narrowly scoped requests.
- Validate and review consequential actions. Use automatic checks for routine validation and pause for human approval when an action has a meaningful side effect. Attach checks to the tool that actually causes the effect.
- Record and evaluate behavior. Preserve traces or audit information about proposed and executed actions, and use evaluation to look for failures. Decide how the system should respond when a check fails or a review decision is unavailable.
These are layers, not substitutes. For example, a review screen cannot compensate for a secret already exposed to agent-generated code, and a sandbox cannot decide whether an otherwise permitted database edit is appropriate.
What does sandboxing an AI agent do?
A sandbox limits what an agent-directed process can access while it runs. Its value depends on the boundary actually enforced: isolation can reduce exposure to files, services, or networks outside the sandbox, but it does not make generated code trustworthy or guarantee that every access path is closed.
Keep the trusted orchestration layer—the application logic responsible for model calls, tool routing, authentication, billing, review, recovery, and audit state—separate from sandbox compute when the risk justifies it. This makes it less likely that code being run for a task can reach the components that control the broader system. The right separation depends on the deployment; the guidance does not establish one universal sandbox configuration.

Why restrict network access?
Execution isolation alone may not answer where a running process can connect. Limit outbound traffic to approved endpoints, and check which system makes each connection: a sandbox, a connector, and a trusted service may have different network access. Treat “the agent cannot reach the network” as a claim to verify against the actual execution and tool-routing design, not as an assumption based on the word sandbox.
What a sandbox does not guarantee
- It does not make generated code safe to execute.
- It does not, by itself, prevent an agent from using a tool that the surrounding application has authorized.
- It does not protect secrets deliberately placed where the running code can read them.
- It does not replace validation, human review, or records of actions.
OpenAI’s sandbox security guidance supports isolation and restricted connectivity as controls, while warning in practical terms that credentials placed in an agent’s environment can be accessible to its code. The boundary must therefore include both execution and the resources made available to that execution.
How should you handle credentials and secrets?
Keep application keys and third-party credentials outside the environment in which agent-generated code runs. If the agent needs a capability that depends on a credential, route the request through a trusted service or proxy that can apply narrow constraints rather than exposing a reusable secret to the code.
Review more than source files. A secret can be exposed through an image, log, or broad environment variable as well as through code. The design question is whether the process executing the agent’s work can read the value—not whether the value was intentionally described to the model.
- Identify which component holds each credential and which component can read it.
- Limit any brokered access to approved requests and destinations.
- Avoid putting secrets in source code, images, logs, or environment variables accessible to the execution process.
- If a credential is exposed, rotate or revoke it; removing the visible copy does not undo access that may already have occurred.
These are architecture recommendations in OpenAI’s official sandbox security guide. The implementation varies between hosted and self-managed setups, so verify how a particular environment handles secrets rather than assuming its defaults.

When should an AI agent ask for human approval?
Use human approval when an action could have a consequential side effect and a person or policy should decide whether it proceeds. OpenAI’s “Guardrails and human review” documentation puts the distinction plainly: “Use guardrails for automatic checks and human review for approval decisions.”
Examples OpenAI lists as potentially warranting review include cancellations, edits, shell commands, and sensitive MCP actions. These examples are not a universal rule that every such action must always pause; they illustrate the kind of consequential action a system designer may choose to gate. The policy should match the impact of the action and the context in which it is requested.
Put review at the side-effect boundary
Approval is meaningful only if it happens before the tool runs. Validate the proposed action close to the tool that performs it, so the review and guardrail apply to the actual target and arguments. Rejecting an action should prevent that tool from executing. An outer guardrail around a workflow may not automatically cover every custom tool call, especially where several tools or a manager-style agent are involved.
Use automatic checks and human judgment for different jobs
Automatic guardrails can check inputs, outputs, or tool behavior. They can handle routine, well-defined validations; human review is for decisions where approval depends on consequences or context that should not be left to an automated check. Neither category is a guarantee of safety. OpenAI recommends tool approvals in Agent Builder and input guardrails, while its documentation cautions that guardrails alone are not foolproof.
Untrusted text that directly drives tool calls is a particular concern. Structure that content into fields that can be validated before passing it to later steps, restrict the tools available to those steps, and evaluate traces for failures. These checks reduce exposure but do not establish that every harmful input or action will be caught.

What should you audit when evaluating an agent design?
Compare implementations by asking where their boundaries are and how those boundaries are enforced. The questions below are evaluation axes, not ratings of named platforms.
| Area | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Execution | Is compute hosted or self-managed? How is the workload isolated? Does trusted orchestration run outside the sandbox? | These answers show what the executing process can reach and which components remain outside its boundary. |
| Authority | Which tools, files, and data are available? Are read and write permissions distinct? Can a tool cause external side effects? | Agent instructions cannot narrow authority that the connected tools already grant. |
| Network | Is outbound traffic restricted or allowlisted? Which infrastructure makes each connection? | Network reach can differ across execution, connectors, and trusted services. |
| Secrets | Can generated code read credentials? Are they held by a trusted service or brokered through a proxy? | A sandbox does not protect a value that is readable from inside it. |
| Review | Which actions pause? Is the check at the tool boundary? What happens if review is unavailable? | A review step needs to precede execution of the sensitive action to prevent it. |
| Evidence and operations | Are actions traceable? Can failures be evaluated? Are recovery and incident response considered? | Records help explain what the agent proposed and executed and support investigation of failures. |
OpenAI’s descriptions of its Codex controls emphasize telemetry and auditability. That is a description of OpenAI’s approach, not proof that a particular control is effective in every environment. For any implementation, establish what its records actually capture and whether they are sufficient to reconstruct relevant actions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What do OpenAI’s Auto-review figures mean?
OpenAI Alignment’s April 30, 2026 article reports that Codex sessions using Auto-review stop for human approval roughly 200 times less often than sessions in manual approval mode. It also reports that Auto-review approves around 99% of the small fraction of actions that require review.
Those figures describe a specific product and deployment, and the reported review frequency and outcomes should be read in that context. They are not a general security success rate, a false-negative rate, or an independent evaluation of agent safety. A lower approval frequency does not, by itself, show whether an agent is secure; a reader would also need to understand which actions are reviewed, how review decisions are made, and what evidence is available about missed risks.
How can you tell whether the controls fit your deployment?
Trace one realistic task from request to outcome. For each step, identify what the agent can read, which tool it can call, where the call executes, what credential is involved, whether the action changes anything, and what record remains. If any answer depends only on the agent choosing to follow an instruction, the limit is not being enforced at that point.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Then walk through failure cases: an invalid target, an attempted action outside the allowed scope, a blocked network request, an exposed credential, a rejected approval, and a review that cannot be completed. Confirm that the system fails closed for sensitive actions—that is, it does not silently proceed when a required check has not passed—and that the outcome can be understood from the available traces. This is a design test, not a claim that any particular platform handles these cases in a specified way.
Finally, match the strength of the controls to the consequences of the work. A low-impact read-only task and a workflow that can cancel, edit, or execute commands do not necessarily need the same boundaries or review policy. The key is to make the authority explicit, constrain it where it is granted, and verify the behavior where actions actually occur.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a sandbox stop prompt injection?
A sandbox is an execution boundary, not a filter that determines whether instructions in untrusted content are safe. Reduce the chance that untrusted text can trigger an action by separating it into validated fields and limiting the tools available to the steps that consume it.
Recommended Free Tools
Does an AI agent’s system prompt define its permissions?
No. Instructions may influence what the model attempts, but permissions are determined by the tools, data, credentials, and environment exposed by the application. Enforce access limits where those capabilities are granted.
What should happen if an approval request times out?
For an action that requires approval, do not let the tool run merely because no decision arrived. Define an explicit timeout outcome—such as leaving the action pending or rejecting it—and make that outcome visible in the workflow’s records.
Do audit logs prove an agent was secure?
No. Records can help explain what the agent proposed and executed, but their value depends on what they capture and whether important actions are missing. Treat auditability as evidence for investigation and evaluation, not as a substitute for access controls.
