AI agents do not necessarily remember every earlier conversation in the text the model sees. A context window is the bounded token budget for one inference; an agent selects what goes into that budget from recent turns, summaries, tool results, and any stored information retrieved for the current task. A practical memory system therefore has to decide what to retain, how to compress or update it, and when to bring it back. Context windows, rolling summaries, and retrieval are complementary parts of that process—not interchangeable names for a single memory feature.
What does it mean for an AI agent to remember?
An agent’s “memory” is a system for carrying useful information from one part of an interaction to another. It is not necessarily a human-like, continuous recollection. The model responds to the input it receives for a particular inference, and the application decides which instructions, conversation turns, stored facts, and tool results to include in that input.
A single turn may include the system prompt, conversation history, retrieved context, and tool-call results. Those pieces compete for a finite context window, measured in tokens. As a result, an application may retain an entire session in storage while sending only a selected subset to the model. Microsoft captures this distinction in its reference architecture: “Storage keeps the whole session; the model does not.”

If an agent is asked to continue a plan, it needs the relevant constraints and decisions—not necessarily every sentence that led to them. If it is asked what a person said verbatim, a compressed summary may not be enough; the original passage may need to be found and supplied.

How do context windows and long-term memory differ?
A context window is the temporary, bounded input available to the model for one inference. Long-term memory is information an application stores outside that input and may retrieve later. The model can use stored information only if the application includes it in the current context.
Think of the context window as a work surface, not a filing cabinet. Current instructions, recent dialogue, retrieved records, and tool outputs are placed on that surface for the current response. A separate storage layer may preserve more information between turns or sessions, but that storage does not automatically become visible to the model. The agent needs a mechanism to select and insert the useful parts.
There is no single required long-term-memory format. A system can store structured facts, written notes, vector embeddings, or graph-like relationships. These formats have different retrieval and update trade-offs, but all serve the same broad purpose: keep information available outside the current model input and make relevant portions available when needed.

What are the three layers of an agent memory architecture?
A useful design separates immediate working context, compressed session memory, and durable memory that can be retrieved later. The layers differ in how close they are to the current task and how much detail they preserve.
1. Working or short-term context
This layer contains recent conversation turns, active instructions, and relevant tool results. It gives the model the immediate context needed to respond coherently and act on the current request. Keeping recent turns verbatim can preserve wording and local details, but a window has a limit: older turns may need to be removed as new material arrives.

2. Compressed session memory
A rolling summary carries forward selected details from earlier in a session. It can preserve decisions, constraints, identifiers, and unresolved items in less space than the original dialogue. The raw turns can remain stored for auditing or later lookup while the model receives the shorter summary.
Compression is selective. A summary can lose a qualification, misstate a detail, or omit something that becomes important later. It should not be treated as a perfect substitute for the original record, especially when exact wording or a disputed detail matters.

3. Durable retrieved memory
This layer holds information intended to remain available beyond the current stretch of conversation. It may contain structured facts, notes, embeddings, or graphs. Rather than placing everything into every prompt, the application fetches records that appear relevant to the task and includes a limited selection in the model’s context.
These layers are a design pattern, not a requirement that every agent implement three separate databases. The important distinction is between information currently sent to the model, information compressed for continuity, and information stored for selective future use.
Which memory strategy should an agent use?
There is no universally best strategy. The right choice depends on how much history matters, whether exact details must be recovered, the cost of carrying context on each turn, and the effort required to keep stored information accurate.

| Strategy | How it works | Main benefit | Main risk or cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full history | Include the conversation history in each model input. | Simple; keeps earlier turns directly available while they fit. | Input grows with every turn and can consume the context budget. |
| Windowed history | Include a recent slice of the conversation. | Predictable and comparatively economical in context use. | Older decisions can disappear from the model’s view. |
| Summary history | Replace older turns with a compressed account. | Preserves older themes while using less space than raw dialogue. | Compression may omit or distort details. |
| Hybrid summary plus window | Keep recent turns verbatim and represent older turns with a summary. | Balances recent detail with continuity from earlier in the session. | Requires summary maintenance and still may lose a detail that matters. |
AWS describes these four approaches as common conversation-history strategies. Its guidance illustrates why a summary can be more context-efficient than raw material: “A structured summary of a three-hundred-line file is more context-efficient than the raw file content if the agent only needs to reason about the file’s high-level properties.” That example is about the information needed for a task, not a guarantee that summaries preserve every fact.
How does retrieval-augmented memory work?
Retrieval-augmented memory stores information outside the current prompt, searches for records relevant to a request, and places selected results into the model’s input. The basic control loop is: decide what to write, organize or compress it, retrieve what the new task needs, then use that material as context.
- Choose what is worth retaining. Identify durable decisions, constraints, useful facts, and open items. Not every conversational detail deserves to become long-term memory; transient remarks or noise can make later retrieval less useful.
- Store it with useful organization. Memory may be kept as structured facts, notes, embeddings, or graph relationships. The representation affects how records can be found and updated.
- Retrieve for the current task. Search for potentially relevant memory and select a bounded set rather than injecting the entire store. The application needs to consider both relevance and which memory scope is appropriate.
- Provide provenance and task context. Make clear to the model what retrieved items represent and where they came from. This helps distinguish a stored claim from a current instruction or a new user statement.
- Update or consolidate when needed. New information can refine, supersede, or conflict with an existing record. Memory needs explicit update rules rather than an assumption that each new item can simply be appended.
Vector or semantic retrieval can scale a store by finding items ranked as relevant to a query, then injecting only selected records. That does not make retrieval automatically accurate. Results depend on choices such as how information is chunked, what metadata accompanies it, how candidates are ranked, and whether the stored information is fresh. Retrieval is a relevance-and-scope problem, not merely a vector-search feature.
How do the main memory architectures compare?
The options below solve different parts of the memory problem. A simple recent-turn window favors low write complexity; semantic search favors selective access to a larger store; hierarchical and graph approaches add structure for more involved continuity and updates.
| Pattern | What it preserves or retrieves | Useful when | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windowed context | Recent turns in the active prompt. | The task is mostly local to the current conversation. | Old decisions fall out of view; storage and retrieval logic are simple. |
| Rolling summary plus recent window | Recent turns verbatim and older material in compressed form. | Continuity matters but full history is too large to send each time. | Summaries save context but can omit or distort details. |
| Vector or semantic retrieval | Ranked records selected from durable memory. | The store is larger than the prompt and the task needs only some of it. | Recall and precision depend on chunking, metadata, ranking, and freshness. |
| Hierarchical memory | Short-, mid-, and long-term stores with explicit update rules. | Different kinds of memory need different retention and retrieval treatment. | More structure creates more update and orchestration work. MemoryOS is an example of this pattern. |
| Graph or temporal memory | Entities, events, and changing facts, with relationships or time represented. | The task depends on connections among people, events, or evolving information. | Conflict handling and compact retrieval need deliberate design. APEX-MEM is described as resolving conflicts at retrieval time and returning a compact summary. |
| Gist memory with source lookup | Compressed “gist” memories linked to original passages that can be fetched when needed. | Long material must be condensed without giving up the ability to recover source details. | Requires both a useful compressed representation and a way to locate the original passage. |
These designs can be combined. For example, an application might keep recent turns in a window, summarize older parts of a session, and use semantic or graph-based retrieval for durable records. The combination should be driven by what the agent must recall and how reliably it must distinguish current facts from older ones.

What does the evidence say about memory improving performance?
Published results show that memory design can affect performance, but results from different systems and benchmarks are not a head-to-head ranking. Their figures should be read as evidence from the named evaluation setup, not as a general promise about every agent.
- ReadAgent (2024): Kuang-Huei Lee, Xinyun Chen, Hiroki Furuta, John Canny, and Ian Fischer reported a 3–20× effective-context extension. ReadAgent grouped source text into memory episodes, compressed them into gist memories, and looked up original passages when needed. It outperformed baselines on QuALITY, NarrativeQA, and QMSum.
- MemoryOS (2025): Jiazheng Kang, Mingming Ji, Zhe Zhao, and Ting Bai reported a 48.36% average F1 improvement and a 46.18% average BLEU-1 improvement over baselines on the LoCoMo benchmark with GPT-4o-mini.
The systems use different approaches and were evaluated on different benchmarks, so their numbers cannot establish which architecture is better in a direct comparison. The relevant lesson is narrower: organizing, compressing, and retrieving information can matter to an agent’s results, while the right design still depends on the task and its evaluation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should an agent decide what to remember?
Memory quality begins with a selection policy. Microsoft’s reference architecture frames the central question as “What to remember”: which interaction signals are durable enough to outlive the session, and which are noise. It also points to the connected decisions of where memory lives, how it is retrieved, and which boundaries share it.
A practical policy should specify what qualifies for retention and what the system does when information changes. Decisions, constraints, stable identifiers, and unresolved items may support future work; a passing detail may not. Whatever is stored should be scoped to the intended user, session, or other boundary. If the application does not define sharing boundaries, it risks retrieving information in a context where it does not belong.
For each memory record, provenance is useful: the model or application should be able to distinguish a user-provided fact, a derived summary, and a retrieved note. A timestamp or other freshness signal can also help determine whether an evolving fact should still be trusted. These are design controls, not guarantees; the architecture must still specify how conflicts are handled and when records are revised or removed.

What can go wrong, and how can the design be improved?
Memory failures often arise because the agent retrieved too much, too little, or the wrong version of a fact—or because a summary lost the detail needed for the current question. The remedy depends on where the failure occurred in the write, compression, storage, retrieval, or prompt-construction loop.
- An old decision is missing: A recent-turn window may have pushed it out. Preserve important decisions in a summary or durable store, and check whether the retrieval query can find them.
- A summary has the wrong detail: Keep the raw history when auditability matters, and recover the original passage for exact wording or disputed facts instead of treating the compressed version as authoritative.
- Retrieved results are irrelevant: Review how records are chunked, what metadata is attached, and how candidates are ranked. A larger retrieval result set is not automatically better if it adds unrelated context.
- Two stored facts conflict: Define update and conflict-resolution rules. Graph or temporal systems can represent entities and evolving facts, while APEX-MEM is an example that resolves conflicts at retrieval time; no single conflict policy is established as universally correct.
- Information appears in the wrong context: Review memory scope boundaries and retrieval filters. Memory that is valid for one user or session should not be treated as generally available without an explicit sharing rule.
- Retrieved context crowds out the task: Cap each memory section and leave room for current instructions and the response. A token budget is shared among the prompt’s components, not reserved solely for memory.
Evaluation should test more than whether a system can retrieve something. A useful assessment asks whether it recalls old decisions, returns precise and current information, handles contradictions, respects scope, and can explain or audit where a claim came from. Multi-session evaluation is particularly important because a memory design that works within one long exchange may behave differently across separate sessions.
What remains difficult about agent memory?
Several problems remain active areas of work: continual consolidation of new information, resolving contradictions, learned forgetting, causally grounded retrieval, privacy governance, and evaluation across multiple sessions. These challenges are connected. For example, retaining every new statement may make consolidation easier to postpone, but can increase noise; forgetting aggressively can reduce clutter, but risk discarding a decision that later matters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no universal rule for how long a fact should persist, which conflicts should be resolved automatically, or how much evidence is enough to promote a detail into durable memory. Those choices depend on the agent’s purpose and the consequences of a mistaken recall. The architecture should make the choices explicit, preserve an audit path where needed, and test the resulting behavior in the kinds of sessions the agent is expected to handle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent remember an exact quote after summarizing a conversation?
Only if the original wording remains accessible somewhere. A gist or rolling summary may preserve meaning without preserving phrasing, so exact-quote tasks need a way to locate and retrieve the source passage.
Does an agent need a vector database to have memory?
No. Durable memory can be stored as structured facts, notes, embeddings, or graph relationships; vector search is one retrieval option, not a definition of memory. The storage and retrieval method should match what the agent needs to recall.
Can two agents share the same memory store safely?
They can only do so safely when the application defines who may write to and retrieve each memory, and how shared information is scoped. A shared store without clear boundaries can expose information in a task or session where it does not belong.
Why can’t a bigger context window solve every memory problem?
A larger input budget can make more text available for a turn, but it does not decide which facts are reliable, current, or relevant. Selection, organization, provenance, and conflict handling remain application-level design problems.
