Agent evaluation tools help teams find failures that a plausible final answer can hide: the agent may choose the wrong tool, send it bad arguments, misread its result, or change application state unexpectedly. The available comparison for this article names seven platforms—not the thirteen in the original headline—so this guide covers those seven without inventing the rest: Arize AX, Arize Phoenix, LangSmith, Braintrust, Langfuse, W&B Weave, and Comet Opik.
The key selection question is not which product has the longest feature list. It is whether the tool can capture the parts of your agent run that matter, evaluate them in your development and production workflows, and help your team turn failures into repeatable checks. The product characterizations below come from an Arize vendor comparison updated August 13, 2026, rather than independent hands-on tests; capabilities and availability can change.
What does agent evaluation measure?
Agent evaluation measures both whether a task succeeded and how the agent tried to succeed. A final-answer check alone can miss a defective run: the agent might call an inappropriate tool, provide incorrect arguments, misunderstand an intermediate result, or make an unintended state change before composing an answer that sounds convincing.

Arize’s August 13, 2026 comparison describes agent evaluation as examining tool selection, tool arguments, execution path, recovery from errors, session behavior, and task success. In practical terms, teams need enough trace detail to connect the outcome to the decisions and actions that produced it.

Evaluation is useful across development and deployment, not just as a final pre-release score. An evaluation workflow can support continuous monitoring, error analysis, and performance improvement. An academic survey of evaluation frameworks places tools such as LangSmith, Langfuse, Google Vertex AI evaluation service, Arize’s evaluation framework, Galileo Agentic Evaluation, Patronus AI, and W&B Weave in this broader category. That is category context, not confirmation that every product name, feature, or availability remains current.
How are evaluation libraries, platforms, and harnesses different?
These terms overlap, but they describe different parts of a working evaluation setup. A library can supply metrics and components for running tests; a platform can bring together traces, datasets, experiments, review, and monitoring; a harness connects those pieces into an evaluation workflow.
A team may use one product for several roles or assemble its own workflow from multiple components. The important test is whether the whole setup lets you move from a failed run to an understandable cause and then to a repeatable check—not whether a vendor uses a particular category label.
Which AI agent evaluation tools are named in the comparison?
The Arize comparison names seven products and presents them as serving different orientations. The descriptions below are attributed vendor-comparison characterizations, not test results or endorsements.

The comparison establishes these relative orientations, but it does not establish a universal ranking or independently verified feature-by-feature parity. The complete thirteen-tool inventory implied by the original headline is not established here. Treat this as a grounded shortlist of named options, not a complete market census.
How should you compare tools for your agent?
Compare candidates against the same application and the same failure cases. A feature that sounds relevant is not enough: confirm that the product handles the unit you need to inspect, the evaluation timing you require, your deployment constraints, and the way your team acts on results.
1. Check what the product can evaluate
Determine whether it can evaluate only final answers or also individual spans and steps, full trajectories, multi-turn threads, or sessions. For an agent, trace-level visibility matters when the question is not merely “Was the answer right?” but “Which action caused the task to fail?” Confirm that the records expose the specific tool calls, arguments, intermediate results, and recovery behavior relevant to your application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Decide when evaluation must run
Offline evaluation runs against datasets and experiments; online evaluation examines production traffic. Some teams need both: offline runs make changes comparable before release, while production evaluation can reveal behaviors that a prepared test set did not cover. The cited comparison notes that support differs by product, so verify the configuration and availability of each workflow rather than assuming a feature exists because the product is described as an evaluation platform.

3. Match deployment to governance requirements
Establish whether you need local or self-hosted deployment, managed cloud, a hybrid arrangement, or an enterprise-hosted option. The comparison says deployment availability varies by product and plan. Confirm the current entitlement, data handling, and operational requirements directly with the vendor before selecting a tool; a broad label such as “open source” or “enterprise” does not answer every deployment question.
4. Choose review methods that fit the task
Evaluation can involve code-based metrics, LLM-based scoring, human annotation, pairwise comparisons, or combinations of these. Decide what counts as success before comparing vendor interfaces. A score is useful only if its rubric matches the task and reviewers can investigate a questionable result at the level of the run that produced it.
5. Follow the path from finding to fix
Check how evaluation results feed into experiment comparisons, production trace review, regression tests, and CI/CD or release gates. A workflow that surfaces a failure but leaves the team to reconstruct the context manually may not solve the operational problem. Conversely, a release gate is only as useful as the cases and scoring criteria behind it.

6. Test fit with your existing stack
Framework compatibility, integrations, data governance, and engineering workflow all affect the effort of adoption. Shortlist products against the same app, data, evaluators, and failure cases. This gives a more meaningful comparison than judging products using different test tasks or relying on a vendor’s description alone.

How should you evaluate an agent that can take different paths?
Do not make exact-match output the only measure when several valid paths can complete a task. Braintrust’s guide recommends measuring decisions and outcomes across repeated runs and allowing multiple valid task paths; that is vendor guidance, but it addresses an important evaluation-design problem.
For example, if an agent can reach the correct outcome through more than one acceptable sequence of tool calls, a test that expects one exact sequence may flag a successful run as a failure. Conversely, an answer that matches expected wording does not establish that the agent took safe or appropriate actions. Define success in terms of the task outcome and the permitted behavior, then inspect traces when results differ.
Repeated runs help expose variation in behavior. Keep the test conditions and scoring criteria consistent when comparing experiments, and preserve the trace context needed to understand why one run diverged from another. A result should distinguish a wrong outcome from an acceptable alternate path, and neither should be inferred from final text alone.
What does an evaluation workflow look like in practice?
Braintrust’s official product material documents one example: log tool calls and reasoning steps as spans, score and compare runs, and move production traces into evaluation datasets. This illustrates a practical loop, but it is a product example rather than independent evidence that one platform is superior.

- Capture a representative run. Record the steps and tool-call spans needed to inspect the decisions behind the result.
- Score the run against an explicit task criterion. Use an evaluator suited to the task, and include human review where automated scoring does not settle whether the behavior was acceptable.
- Compare experiments. When a change is made, compare runs under consistent conditions so the team can see whether outcomes or execution behavior changed.
- Turn production discoveries into evaluation cases. Where the workflow supports it, use relevant production traces as dataset examples for future evaluation.
- Use the result in engineering decisions. Feed findings into regression checks, monitoring, or the release workflow your team has chosen.
This sequence is a way to reason about the workflow, not a claim that every named product supports each step identically. Verify the exact integrations, trace fields, review methods, and release controls in a shortlisted product’s current documentation.
What should you verify before choosing a platform?
Product descriptions and entitlements can change, and the comparison itself advises validating current capabilities and prices with product pages. Pricing is not needed to decide whether an evaluation workflow fits; ask vendors for the current commercial details only after confirming the technical requirements that matter to your team.
- Trace coverage: Can you inspect the relevant actions and intermediate steps, not just the final answer?
- Evaluation scope: Does it support the kind of task, thread, trajectory, or session you need to assess?
- Timing: Can you run the offline, online, or combined workflow you require?
- Deployment: Is the needed hosting model available for your product edition and plan?
- Review: Can evaluators and humans investigate ambiguous or disputed scores?
- Operational fit: Can results enter your monitoring, experiments, regression testing, or release process?
- Framework and governance: Does it fit your stack and data requirements without relying on an unverified assumption about compatibility?
Product claims in this article come from an August 13, 2026 vendor comparison and Braintrust’s official workflow example, not hands-on testing. The comparison does not supply a verified thirteen-product list, a best-in-class ranking, or a universal capability matrix. Confirm current product names, capabilities, deployment options, and commercial terms with the vendors before making a purchase decision.

How often should I rerun an agent evaluation?
There is no universal schedule established by the product comparison. As a practical policy, rerun relevant cases when you change the model, prompt, tools, or application logic, and decide separately how often your team reviews production behavior.
Can agent evaluation guarantee that an agent will never fail?
No evaluation workflow can establish that an agent will never fail across every possible task and condition. Its value is in exposing and characterizing failures your cases and observations cover, so teams can investigate and improve the system.
What should I do when an evaluator’s score seems wrong?
Inspect the underlying trace and compare the score with the task’s success criteria. If the case is ambiguous, human review can help determine whether the evaluator rubric, the test example, or the agent behavior needs attention.
