Give an AI agent its own, narrowly scoped identity; monitor both what it does and how its access changes; and keep a tested shutdown procedure that disables the identity and revokes the credentials that authorize it. Treating an agent as a browser window or as an ordinary employee account leaves gaps: a stopped interface may leave valid tokens running, and a model permission does not automatically permit credential creation, administration, file access, or calls to other services.

The controls below apply whether the agent is user-directed or autonomous. AWS distinguishes agents acting explicitly for a user from agents triggered by schedules, events, alarms, or other agents. In both cases, the agent is a security principal whose identity, permissions, tools, credentials, and reachable data must be documented and governed.

What account access does an AI agent really need?

An agent usually needs several kinds of access at once: an identity with which to authenticate, permission to invoke a model, credentials for tools, and network or application access to the data and systems needed for its task. These are separate capabilities. Permission to use a model is not permission to administer an account, create new credentials, change roles, read stored files, or call every API in a connected service.

Start by writing the agent’s business purpose in one sentence. For example, “Classify support tickets and draft replies for a human approver” is narrower than “Manage customer support.” The purpose determines which systems, actions, records, and time windows are justified. If the purpose cannot be stated precisely, the requested access is probably too broad to approve.

User-directed and autonomous agents

A user-directed agent runs in response to a person and may inherit a bounded delegation from that person. An autonomous agent starts from a schedule, event, alarm, queue message, or another agent. Autonomous operation increases the importance of independent ownership, explicit credentials, rate limits, and a way to stop future runs. Do not assume that a human’s interactive sign-in controls an agent that continues operating on a schedule.

Dedicated identity beats a shared service account

Use a dedicated service identity, workload identity, or agent principal for each materially different purpose. Shared accounts make it difficult to determine which agent performed an action, which permissions are still required, and which credentials must be revoked during an incident. AWS guidance calls for verifiable authentication for every agent-to-agent and agent-to-service communication, such as certificate-based mutual TLS, signed OAuth tokens, or a platform-managed workload identity.

Google Cloud policy prohibits stolen or unauthorized credentials and unauthorized access. Delegated access therefore has to be explicit, bounded, and attributable to the intended agent rather than hidden behind a copied user password or an unowned key.

Build an agent access register before granting permissions

The Australian Signals Directorate advisory and the Australian Information Security Manual (ISM) treat an inventory as an operational control, not paperwork. You cannot enforce minimum access or investigate an event if you do not know which agents exist, who owns them, or where their credentials work.

Maintain one record for every production, test, and scheduled agent. Include the following fields:

Register field What to record Why it matters
Unique identifier A stable name or ID that is not reused after retirement Lets logs and incident tickets point to one principal
Owner and backup owner A person or team accountable for purpose, approvals, and response Prevents orphaned identities and delayed shutdown
Business purpose The specific job, trigger, allowed outputs, and human approval point Defines the boundary against which permissions are reviewed
Assigned identities Service principals, workload identities, application registrations, or delegated user identities Shows which authentication paths must be disabled
Accounts and credentials API keys, certificates, OAuth clients, refresh tokens, secrets, and their storage locations Supports rapid revocation and rotation
Tools and permissions Applications, API methods, roles, groups, queues, and allowed operations Reveals excessive or undocumented capability
Data repositories Databases, file stores, mailboxes, tickets, prompts, and logs the agent can reach Defines the potential blast radius
Triggers and limits Schedules, event sources, rate limits, spending limits, and consumption ceilings Controls autonomous activity and runaway cost
Review and retirement dates Last approval, next review, and decommissioning condition Removes access that is no longer justified

Assign an owner before deployment, and remove unnecessary access promptly when the purpose, tool set, or team changes. Keep test and production identities distinct so an experiment cannot inherit production data by accident.

Design least-privilege permissions

Translate the business purpose into individual actions. “Read order status” is a permission; “manage the order system” is a role label that may hide dozens of unrelated actions. Grant the smallest set of resources and operations that completes the task, then make elevation temporary and reviewable.

A practical capability model

Capability Typical need Safer boundary
Model invocation Submit prompts or structured inputs and receive outputs Limit to approved models, regions, projects, and quotas
Data read Retrieve the records required for the current job Use a read-only role, field filtering, and repository-specific scopes
Data write Create drafts, tickets, or other reversible work Write only to designated objects; require human approval for irreversible changes
Tool execution Call a narrowly defined function such as ticket lookup Allow listed methods and parameters rather than unrestricted code execution
Credential use Authenticate to an approved downstream service Use a vault or workload identity; never place long-lived secrets in prompts or source
Administration Change roles, policies, keys, or account settings Keep separate from routine agent permissions; use a time-bound, separately approved path

Separate human and agent permissions. An agent that drafts a response should not receive the same role as the employee who approves and sends it. An agent that reads a repository should not automatically be able to change sharing settings, create credentials, or add itself to a group. The Australian advisory specifically warns that model use, account administration, credential creation, and stored-file access are different permissions.

Authenticate every hop

Require verifiable authentication when an agent calls another agent or a service. Validate the audience, issuer, expiry, and scope of signed tokens; bind certificates or workload identities to the intended deployment; and reject credentials that are missing, expired, or presented by an unexpected principal. Do not copy a human’s password into an agent configuration. If a delegated user token is unavoidable, make its scope and lifetime explicit and record which agent obtained it.

Control secrets and token lifetime

Store keys, certificates, and refresh tokens in an approved secret manager or identity platform. Give the runtime permission to retrieve only the secret it needs, and prevent the agent from reading the vault’s administrative interface. Prefer short-lived tokens and automatic rotation. Record the credential identifier in the register without placing the secret value in tickets, logs, prompts, or source control.

Bound autonomous behavior

For scheduled or event-triggered agents, set a maximum run duration, invocation rate, spending limit, and consumption ceiling. Configure these limits so that they enforce restrictions rather than merely generate notifications. A runaway loop should hit a platform control before it exhausts a quota or calls a downstream system thousands of times. Provide an operator-controlled pause for the trigger source as well as a way to disable the identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to monitor an AI agent

Monitoring must cover more than prompts and model responses. The Australian advisory recommends watching model access, credential creation, permission changes, and unusual usage patterns while protecting audit logs from tampering. Microsoft guidance adds alerts for sudden token-request spikes, unexpected APIs, unfamiliar IP ranges, credential additions, permission grants, and role assignments outside the normal deployment pipeline.

Events worth collecting

Event category Examples Useful questions
Authentication Sign-ins, token issuance, failed authentication, new locations or devices Was this the expected identity, workload, network, and time?
Credential lifecycle Key or certificate creation, secret reads, token refresh, revocation Who created or used the credential, and was it approved?
Authorization changes Role assignments, group membership, consent, policy edits, permission grants Did a deployment pipeline make the change, or did an interactive actor?
Resource access API calls, repository reads, file downloads, mailbox or database access Did the agent touch a resource outside its documented purpose?
Runtime behavior Prompt volume, token requests, error rates, tool calls, retries, spend, and duration Is usage consistent with the normal workload and limits?
Trigger activity Schedule changes, event subscriptions, queue messages, chained agent invocations Could the agent run again after an operator thinks it is stopped?

Protect logs against deletion or alteration by the agent and by the account it uses. Send copies to a security-controlled store, restrict who can change retention or export settings, and alert when logging is disabled or falls behind. Retention periods and console labels vary by provider; choose a period that covers your investigation and legal requirements rather than assuming a universal default.

Microsoft Entra monitoring path

In the Microsoft Entra admin center, administrators can inspect agent-related operations in audit logs and sign-in behavior in sign-in logs. Review the identity, application, resource, status, IP address, device or workload details, and timestamp for each event. Microsoft Graph can also retrieve these events for correlation with your security information and event management system. Menu names and available fields change, so verify the current tenant experience before documenting an operating procedure.

Alert logic that catches real abuse

  • Alert on a sudden increase in token requests, repeated authentication failures, or activity outside the agent’s normal schedule.
  • Alert when the identity calls an API, resource, region, or IP range not present in its register.
  • Alert on new credentials, consent grants, role assignments, group changes, or policy edits that did not come from the approved deployment pipeline.
  • Alert when spending, rate, or consumption approaches its enforced ceiling, and escalate if the ceiling is changed.
  • Correlate the agent’s sign-in with downstream resource access; a normal model call followed by an unusual file download is a higher-risk sequence than either event alone.

Include agent activity in incident response plans and post-mortems. Record which detection fired, which credentials were valid at the time, what data was reached, and which control would have shortened containment.

Emergency shutdown when an agent is suspected to be compromised

Use a preapproved sequence and rehearse it. The objective is to stop authorization, preserve evidence, understand downstream reach, remove the cause, and restore only after review. Stopping a chat window or scheduler alone is not enough if valid keys, sessions, or refresh tokens remain active.

  1. Contain the identity. Disable the affected agent identity or block its authentication path. Revoke affected API keys, sessions, refresh tokens, certificates, and other tokens. Pause schedules, event subscriptions, queues, and chained triggers that could launch another run. Isolate compromised hosts or runners from the network without destroying evidence.
  2. Preserve evidence. Protect audit, sign-in, credential, authorization, configuration-change, and runtime logs before deleting resources or rotating secrets. Record the time of containment, the identity IDs, active deployments, and the people who performed each action. Export a read-only copy to a security-controlled location.
  3. Scope the impact. Review risk detections, sign-in history, audit events, connected tools, data repositories, and every downstream system the agent could reach. Identify credentials created or accessed during the suspected window, resources read or changed, and other agents or users that received outputs. Look for persistence such as a new role, webhook, schedule, OAuth consent, or secondary key.
  4. Remediate the cause. Remove unauthorized grants and persistence, fix the exposed application, host, workflow, prompt-injection path, or secret-handling flaw, and rotate credentials before re-enabling anything. Microsoft describes the response sequence as detect, respond, investigate, and recover; a confirmed compromise should trigger disablement and credential rotation rather than a simple password change.
  5. Restore carefully. Recheck the documented purpose, owner, tools, repositories, and least-privilege scopes. Deploy a clean version, issue new credentials, test logging and limits, and re-enable one trigger at a time. Keep heightened monitoring until the owner and security team agree that the original cause is addressed.

What to revoke first

Prioritize credentials that can authorize independent access: API keys, refresh tokens, workload identities, certificates, application secrets, and delegated sessions. Then remove role assignments, group memberships, OAuth consents, webhooks, and scheduled triggers that could recreate access. If a token cannot be individually identified, revoke the broader token family or disable the principal, document the blast radius, and issue a replacement after investigation.

When evidence is incomplete

Do not wait for perfect attribution before containment. Disable the principal, preserve the available logs, and mark the uncertainty in the incident record. You can narrow the scope after authorization is blocked; you cannot reliably reconstruct events if an agent continues changing resources while investigators search.

How to test that shutdown really works

Run a controlled exercise at least whenever the identity design, provider, or credential flow changes. Use a nonproduction agent with representative permissions and an isolated test repository.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start a normal run and confirm that sign-in, token, tool, and repository events appear in the expected logs.
  2. Trigger the documented containment action: disable the identity, revoke tokens, and pause autonomous triggers.
  3. Attempt a new sign-in, reuse an existing session, call a downstream API, and start the scheduled or event path. Each attempt should fail or be blocked and should produce an observable event.
  4. Verify that log copies remain available to investigators and that the agent cannot alter retention, export, or alert settings.
  5. Restore with newly issued credentials, confirm least-privilege access, and record the time required for each step and any manual dependency.

A test that only closes the user interface proves very little. The meaningful result is that every credential and token capable of authorizing work is invalidated and that future triggers cannot start a new session.

Comparing platforms and agent implementations

When evaluating an identity platform or agent framework, compare the controls that determine accountability and recovery rather than comparing model quality alone.

Comparison axis Questions to ask Evidence to require
Identity separation Can each agent have a dedicated principal, or must several agents share an account? Stable identity IDs in authentication and resource logs
Permission granularity Can access be limited by action, resource, data field, environment, and time? Documented scopes and a working temporary-elevation path
Audit completeness Are sign-ins, token events, role changes, tool calls, and downstream reads recorded? Exportable, tamper-resistant logs with an appropriate retention policy
Anomaly detection Can the service detect unusual APIs, IP ranges, token spikes, and off-pipeline changes? Configurable alerts and test events
Emergency disablement Can operators block sign-in and revoke keys, sessions, and tokens quickly? A documented runbook tested in a nonproduction exercise
Ownership and register support Can owners, purpose, credentials, tools, and repositories be tracked? Inventory integration or an exportable record
Incident-response integration Can events flow to existing detection, investigation, and post-mortem processes? Supported log export, case links, and change history

There is no universal vendor kill switch. The effective shutdown point depends on the identity provider, token type, trigger system, and downstream services in your design. Document the concrete controls available in your environment and the order in which they must be used.

Common access mistakes and fixes

Using a human account for automation

Symptom: Agent activity appears under an employee’s sign-in, and disabling the employee would disrupt unrelated work. Fix: Move the workload to a dedicated principal, record the owner, and grant only the agent’s required scopes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Granting an administrator role for convenience

Symptom: A simple lookup or draft task can create keys, change policies, or read unrelated repositories. Fix: Replace the broad role with action- and resource-specific permissions; keep administration on a separate, approved elevation path.

Monitoring prompts but not authorization

Symptom: Prompt transcripts look normal while a new credential, role assignment, or file download goes unnoticed. Fix: Alert on identity, credential, permission, configuration, and downstream resource events as well as model usage.

Stopping the interface instead of revoking authorization

Symptom: The dashboard shows the agent as stopped, but an existing token or scheduled trigger still works. Fix: Disable the identity, revoke affected keys, sessions, and tokens, and pause every trigger that can start another run.

Keeping no reliable inventory

Symptom: Responders cannot identify an owner, credential location, or reachable repository during an incident. Fix: Make the register a deployment prerequisite and review it whenever tools, models, permissions, or data stores change.

Operational checklist

  • Each agent has a unique identity, accountable owner, documented purpose, and separate production and test records.
  • Agent-to-agent and agent-to-service calls use verifiable authentication; human passwords are not copied into configurations.
  • Permissions are limited to required actions and resources, with administration and irreversible changes separated from routine work.
  • Secrets are stored in an approved manager, tokens are short-lived where practical, and rotation is documented.
  • Schedules, event triggers, rate limits, spending limits, and consumption ceilings are enforced and tested.
  • Sign-ins, credential events, permission changes, role assignments, tool calls, downstream access, and runtime anomalies reach protected logs.
  • Alerts cover token spikes, unfamiliar IP ranges, unexpected APIs, new credentials, grants, and off-pipeline changes.
  • The emergency runbook disables authentication, revokes keys and tokens, pauses triggers, preserves evidence, scopes impact, rotates credentials, and restores only after review.
  • A nonproduction exercise demonstrates that the shutdown invalidates real authorization rather than merely hiding the user interface.
