To add another website to shared hosting, first confirm that your plan permits multiple websites, then create the new site in your host’s dashboard or add its domain in cPanel. Give an independent site its own document root, point the domain’s DNS to the hosting account, and install or upload the site there. The exact buttons, domain limits, DNS values, and available features vary by provider and plan, so do not follow a cPanel or dashboard path until you have checked those account-specific details.

What does “add a website” mean on a shared hosting account?

Adding a website is more than registering another domain. You are creating a separate web space, connecting a domain name to that space, and placing the site’s files or application there. A hosting panel may combine these actions in one wizard, while cPanel exposes them as separate tasks.

The terminology matters because several arrangements look similar in a control panel but behave differently for visitors:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Arrangement What visitors see Where files live Typical use
Independent domain or addon domain A separate domain opens a separate website. Its own document root, such as a dedicated folder selected during domain creation. A second business, project, store, or blog that should not share the primary site’s files.
Alias or parked domain A second domain opens the main website. The primary domain’s document root. Alternate spelling, a second country domain, or a redirect-like entry point for the same content.
Subdomain A host such as blog.example.com opens a section or separate installation. A folder chosen by the control panel, if the plan permits it. Staging, documentation, a members area, or a separate project under the same parent domain.
Temporary or preview domain A provider-generated address opens the site before the final domain is connected. The site’s assigned directory. Initial setup or migration testing; availability depends on the provider’s dashboard.

If the new domain is meant to be an independent website, do not accept a setting that shares the primary document root. Sharing that root causes both domains to serve the same files, regardless of how many domain names appear in the account.

Can one shared hosting plan host two or more websites?

Yes, but only when the plan includes multiple websites or domains. “Shared hosting” describes how server resources are shared; it does not guarantee a particular site count. Single-site plans commonly require an upgrade or removal of an existing site before another one can be added.

Check the plan page, billing area, or account resource panel for these items before you begin:

  • The number of websites or domains included, and whether the allowance is already used.
  • Storage, file-count or inode, database, bandwidth, and process limits that all sites will share.
  • Whether each site can have an independent document root rather than only an alias.
  • Whether SSL certificates, email mailboxes, scheduled tasks, backups, and databases are available per site or limited at the account level.
  • Whether the account uses cPanel or a proprietary dashboard, since the creation path and terminology will differ.

Keep the plan’s region, billing term, and current product description in mind. Limits can change, and a provider may show different allowances for monthly, annual, introductory, or renewed subscriptions. If the dashboard shows no remaining website slot, creating a domain record will not bypass that limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I prepare before adding the new site?

Have the domain name, DNS access, and site files or installation plan ready. Preparation prevents the most common situation: a domain is created in the hosting panel but still points to an old server, or files are uploaded to a directory that the domain does not use.

  • Domain control: Know where the domain’s nameservers and DNS records are managed. That may be the registrar, the hosting company, or a separate DNS service.
  • Site type: Decide whether you are starting a new CMS or site-builder project, uploading an existing static site, or migrating an application with a database.
  • Target directory: Choose a unique document root for an independent site. Do not place two unrelated installations in the primary site’s folder.
  • Credentials and backups: Keep the registrar login, hosting login, SFTP or file-manager credentials, database credentials, and a verified backup of any existing site available.
  • Email dependencies: Record existing MX, SPF, DKIM, and other mail-related records before changing nameservers. A web move should not accidentally disconnect mail.

How do I add another website from a hosting dashboard?

Proprietary dashboards usually combine domain assignment and site creation. The labels differ, but the sequence below is broadly applicable.

  1. Open the Websites, Sites, or Hosting section. Look for an action such as Create website, Add site, or Import website. If the action is missing, check the plan allowance before looking for a hidden menu.
  2. Choose create or import. Create starts an empty installation or a guided site builder. Import or migrate is intended for an existing site and may ask for its current URL, files, database, or migration credentials.
  3. Select the site type. Choose the CMS, builder, application, or blank hosting space you actually intend to use. A site-type choice can determine which installer, PHP version, database, or directory the dashboard provisions.
  4. Assign the address. Select the new registered domain, a subdomain, or a temporary address if the dashboard supports one. Do not select the primary domain by mistake; the result can overwrite or replace the wrong site assignment.
  5. Review the location and resources. If the wizard exposes a directory, use a unique path. Confirm the selected plan, database, and site slot, then submit the setup.
  6. Finish DNS and content setup. Follow the host’s nameserver or DNS-record instructions, wait for the address to resolve, and then install the application or upload the site files to the assigned location.

Dashboard labels are not universal. A provider may create the directory automatically and hide it, while another asks you to choose it. Treat the on-screen domain assignment as authoritative and document the resulting path before uploading anything.

How do I add an independent addon domain in cPanel?

In cPanel, use the Domains interface and create a new domain with its own document root. The exact controls can be disabled by the hosting provider; cPanel documents that providers can enable or disable this interface through WHM’s Feature Manager (cPanel: Create a New Domain).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to cPanel and open Domains. Choose Create a New Domain or the equivalent add-domain control.
  2. Enter the domain. Type the complete domain name, without a protocol such as https://, unless the form explicitly asks for a URL.
  3. Choose the independent-site option. Clear Share document root when the domain must serve a separate website. Leaving it selected makes the new address use the primary domain’s files.
  4. Confirm the document root. Accept or edit the dedicated directory shown by cPanel. Use a clear, unique folder name and avoid nesting an unrelated site inside the primary site’s web root.
  5. Submit the domain. cPanel creates the domain mapping and directory. If the control is unavailable or the form rejects the domain, the account’s feature set or website allowance may not permit it.
  6. Point DNS to the account. Use the nameservers or DNS-record values supplied by your host. Domain creation in cPanel does not automatically change DNS at a separate registrar.
  7. Install or upload the site. Use the host’s application installer, File Manager, or SFTP to place the site in the new document root. For an application that needs a database, create the database and update its configuration with the credentials supplied by the host.

cPanel distinguishes an independent domain from an alias: an alias points at an existing site, while a separately configured domain can have its own directory. The provider may also restrict which domain types are available, so the absence of a particular checkbox is an account feature decision, not necessarily a cPanel error.

How should I point the domain’s DNS to shared hosting?

The domain must resolve to the hosting account before visitors can reach the new files. You normally do this in one of two ways: replace the domain’s nameservers with the host’s nameservers, or leave nameservers where they are and edit the required DNS records there.

Option 1: Change nameservers

Use this when the hosting provider will manage the domain’s DNS zone. Copy the exact nameserver hostnames from the hosting account into the registrar’s nameserver settings. Save the change, then keep the host’s DNS zone authoritative for the domain.

Option 2: Change DNS records

Use this when DNS remains with the registrar or another DNS service. Add or update the web records requested by the host, commonly an address record for the root domain and a record for www. Use the provider’s exact target and record type; never substitute an IP address guessed from another account.

Be careful with records unrelated to the website. If email is still handled elsewhere, preserve the existing MX and mail-authentication records while changing only the web records. If the host requires a verification TXT record, add it exactly as shown.

How do I check whether DNS is the problem?

After saving DNS changes, test the exact domain and the www form separately. From a terminal, commands such as dig +short example.com and dig +short www.example.com show what a resolver returns; on systems without dig, nslookup example.com provides a similar check. Compare the result with the destination specified by your host.

DNS updates are not always visible immediately because resolvers cache records for their time-to-live. Follow the propagation window published by your registrar or host, and test from more than one network before assuming the setup failed. If the old server still appears, check the authoritative DNS zone rather than repeatedly changing files on the new account.

How do I install or upload the second website?

Once the domain is assigned and DNS is directed correctly, put the site content in the new document root, not the primary site’s directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Starting a new site

Use the dashboard’s CMS or application installer if one is available. Confirm that the installer asks for the new domain and the new directory. If it offers a database prefix or administrator path, use values that identify this site so its tables and credentials are not confused with the first installation.

Uploading an existing static site

  1. Open File Manager or connect with SFTP using the account and directory supplied by the host.
  2. Upload the site’s files, including the entry file such as index.html or the application’s front controller.
  3. Keep the directory structure intact; moving only the visible homepage can break stylesheets, scripts, images, or routes.
  4. Check file and directory permissions using the host’s recommended defaults rather than applying broad write permissions.

Migrating an application

Copy the application files and export/import its database according to the application’s documentation. Update the configuration with the new database name, user, password, and host if those values differ. A migration can also require changes to the application’s base URL, rewrite rules, scheduled tasks, or environment variables; test those items before changing the live DNS.

How do I verify that the new website is independent?

Open the domain in a private browser window and confirm that the intended site appears. Then perform checks that specifically expose a shared-root or DNS mistake:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the add-website option missing?

The most common reason is that the account cannot provision another site. Check the plan’s website allowance and the current site list first.

  • Plan limit reached: Remove an unused site if the provider allows that, or move to a plan with additional website capacity. Deleting a domain record without a backup can also delete or orphan its files, so preserve the site before removing anything.
  • Feature disabled: The host may have disabled domain creation, addon domains, or the cPanel Domains interface for that package. Ask support which domain types the account supports.
  • Wrong panel: Some accounts use a proprietary dashboard and do not expose cPanel at all. Follow the provider’s dashboard workflow instead of searching for an addon-domain button.
  • Domain already assigned: A domain may still belong to another hosting plan or account with the same provider. Release it from the old assignment or ask support to move it before adding it again.

Why does the new domain show the primary website?

This usually means the domain shares the primary document root or is configured as an alias. In cPanel, return to Domains and inspect the domain’s document-root setting. An independent site needs a separate directory, and its files must actually be uploaded there.

If the root is correct, inspect DNS next. The domain may still resolve to the old server or to another site on the same account. Check the authoritative records and compare the resolved destination with the hosting account’s instructions.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Why does the domain not load after I added it?

Separate DNS, assignment, and content problems instead of changing all three at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the domain appears in the intended hosting account and is not assigned elsewhere.
  2. Verify nameservers or web DNS records at the system that actually manages DNS.
  3. Allow the published propagation period and test both the root domain and www.
  4. Confirm that the document root contains the site’s entry file and that the application configuration is complete.
  5. Check whether HTTPS is being requested before a certificate has been issued. Test the provider’s temporary or HTTP address if available, then enable redirects after the certificate works.

A DNS error, a certificate warning, a directory listing, and a server-side application error indicate different layers of the setup. Record the exact browser message before contacting support; it lets the host determine whether the failure is DNS, web-server routing, permissions, or application code.

How do hosting providers and panels differ?

The underlying sequence is the same, but the control surface and terminology are not. These documented examples illustrate the differences without making their plans interchangeable.

Panel or provider style What you may see What to verify
cPanel hosting A Domains screen with Create a New Domain, a document-root field, and a Share document root choice. Whether the host enabled the interface, whether addon domains are allowed, and which directory is assigned. See cPanel’s domain documentation.
Dashboard-based hosting A guided Create website or Import website flow that assigns a domain and site type in one wizard. The website allowance, assigned domain, generated directory, and the DNS values supplied after setup.
Portal-plus-cPanel hosting A customer portal may connect the domain first, while cPanel handles the directory and files. A provider’s published addon-domain guide can show both stages; for example, see this documented portal/cPanel workflow. Which panel owns the domain assignment and where DNS is managed.
Hosts that distinguish parking from a new site The account may offer domain parking for the primary site separately from adding an additional website. See the distinction described in this provider documentation. Whether the action creates a new site or merely maps another address to existing content.

Use the instructions for your own account, not a screenshot from a different host. Even two cPanel accounts can expose different domain types, limits, and DNS automation.

How should I organize several sites on one shared account?

Separate directories are necessary but do not create complete resource or security isolation. All sites on the account can still share CPU, memory, storage, backups, and account-level credentials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use descriptive, non-overlapping directory names and keep a written map of domain-to-root assignments.
  • Keep each application, database, and administrator account separate where the host permits it.
  • Update each site independently and remove unused plugins, themes, scripts, and test files.
  • Maintain backups that can restore one site without overwriting the others.
  • Monitor account-wide storage, file count, database, and process usage after adding the site.
  • Limit access to the hosting account and SFTP credentials; anyone with account-level access may be able to reach every site.

If one site becomes busy or compromised, the other sites can be affected because they remain on the same hosting account. Treat shared hosting as a convenience and cost-saving arrangement, not as a substitute for separate accounts when strong isolation is required.

What is the complete order of operations?

Use this short runbook when you need a reliable sequence rather than a provider-specific tutorial.

  1. Check that the plan has an unused website/domain slot and supports independent document roots.
  2. Decide whether the new address is an independent domain, alias, subdomain, or temporary address.
  3. Back up existing site files and record DNS and email records.
  4. Create the site in the provider dashboard, or open cPanel’s Domains → Create a New Domain.
  5. For an independent cPanel site, clear Share document root and confirm the dedicated directory.
  6. Point the domain’s nameservers or web DNS records to the hosting account at the system that manages DNS.
  7. Wait for DNS visibility, then install the CMS or upload the existing files to the assigned root.
  8. Test both domains, HTTPS, application links, forms, databases, and email-related records.
  9. Document the final domain, root path, DNS manager, database, and backup location for future maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to transfer my domain registration to the hosting company?

No. Registration and hosting are separate services. You can leave the domain registered with its current registrar and point its nameservers or web records to the hosting account, provided you can edit the domain’s DNS.

Why can’t I find “Create New Domain” in cPanel?

The hosting provider controls which cPanel features are enabled for each package. The domain interface may be disabled, replaced by a customer portal, or restricted when the plan has no additional-site capacity; support can confirm the account’s available domain types.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I run a static site and a database-driven CMS on the same account?

Usually, yes, if the plan supplies the required runtime and databases. Give each project its own document root and database, and verify that the account’s shared storage, process, and file-count limits can support both.

Can two domains intentionally display the same website?

Yes. Configure the second address as an alias or parked domain rather than an independent addon domain. That arrangement uses the primary site’s files, so changing the primary site changes what visitors see through both addresses.
