The TEA2208T is a controller IC for an active full-wave bridge—not a complete rectifier module. It drives four external high-voltage MOSFETs that can replace the conventional diode bridge at the input of a suitable AC–DC power supply. NXP says this approach can reduce bridge conduction losses; the improvement in a finished supply depends on the MOSFETs and the rest of the design.
What the TEA2208T does
In a conventional full-wave diode bridge, current passes through two conducting diodes on each half-cycle. Their forward-voltage drops create conduction loss. The TEA2208T senses the AC input polarity and controls four external MOSFETs to perform the rectification instead. NXP says the MOSFET approach can eliminate the typical rectifier-diode forward-conduction losses.
The MOSFETs are not integrated into the TEA2208T. The IC provides their control and drive, so a design still needs appropriately rated external devices and a complete power-supply circuit. NXP describes the TEA2208T as suitable for AC–DC supplies, including supplies with a boost-type power-factor-correction (PFC) stage first.
How the active bridge works
The four MOSFETs are arranged as a bridge. Depending on the AC input polarity, the controller drives the appropriate pair so current through the following supply circuitry retains the required direction. Replacing diode drops with MOSFET conduction can lower bridge loss, but it does not make the entire converter lossless: MOSFET resistance, gate charging, controller consumption and the downstream converter all matter.

NXP lists high-voltage level shifters, direct drive for all four rectifier MOSFETs, self-supply, integrated X-capacitor discharge, full-wave drive, undervoltage lockout for high- and low-side drivers, drain-source overvoltage protection for the external MOSFETs, and startup gate pull-down currents. Efficiency claims and what they mean
NXP’s TEA2208T Product Data Sheet Rev. 1.4, dated 14 April 2021, says efficiency can improve “up to about 1.4 % at 90 V (AC) mains voltage” when the controller is paired with low-ohmic high-voltage external MOSFETs. This is an approximate, manufacturer-stated upper bound in that specified context—not a guaranteed gain for every power supply, operating point or MOSFET selection.

The same data sheet describes “Very low IC power consumption (2 mW).” NXP’s product page also describes combined power dissipation and gate-charge losses as low as 2 mW. Neither figure should be read as the total loss of a complete converter. Whole-supply efficiency must be evaluated with the chosen MOSFETs and the actual circuit, mains input and load. The published figures cited here are NXP specifications and claims; they are not independent test results.
Where NXP says it can be used
NXP names adapters, desktop and all-in-one PC supplies, television supplies and server supplies as applications. Its product information describes a boost-PFC first stage and resonant, flyback or other second-stage arrangements. Those are application contexts, not a claim that every supply topology or existing diode-bridge design can use the IC without redesign. What to compare when evaluating a design
Assess the active bridge as part of the complete supply, rather than comparing only the controller with a pair of diodes. Useful design checks include:
- Bridge conduction: compare diode forward loss with the selected MOSFETs’ conduction loss at the intended current.
- Drive and control: account for controller consumption and gate-charge losses.
- Device ratings: select external MOSFET voltage and current ratings, and conduction resistance, using the circuit requirements and design calculations. The TEA2208T part number alone does not identify a compatible MOSFET.
- Protection and startup: review the controller’s protection features and startup behavior against the intended supply design.
- System result: compare complete-supply efficiency at the intended mains voltage and load.
Is the TEA2208T reference board available?
NXP lists the TEA2208DB1576 demonstration board, but marks it no longer manufactured. Its board page lists a user guide and design files. The board may still be useful as a reference, but its discontinued manufacturing status means it should not be assumed to be available as a current product.
