In one year-long test of small monochrome OLED modules, all 11 displays were still working after 378 days, but a few pixels had burned out. The result shows that a display can remain operational while heavily used pixels wear unevenly; it does not establish a universal OLED lifespan.

What the experiment tested

Electronics In Focus tested 11 small 128×64 OLED modules using SSD1306 controllers. An STM32 drove each display over I2C. The displayed pattern divided the panel into 16 blocks, illuminating each block in sequence for one second so different areas accumulated different amounts of use. Hackaday’s Brian Benchoff reported the experiment in 2019. Read the Hackaday report.

What happened after 378 days

The report says the test stopped after 378 days, with no display completely failed. A few pixels had burned out, and their damage correlated with how often they had been illuminated. That is a distinction worth keeping clear: the modules continued to function, but they were not unchanged.

In this context, burn-in is uneven wear: pixels used more often age differently from less-used pixels and may become visibly dimmer or fail sooner. The report observed localized pixel damage, but it did not publish luminance measurements or an exact count of affected pixels.

What this result does—and does not—tell you

The test offers a useful example of how a small SSD1306 OLED module can fare under a particular pattern of use. It is not a lifespan rating for all OLED screens. The report does not give the displays’ brightness setting, ambient temperature, exact pixel-failure count, luminance readings, or a controlled comparison group. It also describes one experiment, not a statistically representative sample.

Its findings apply to the tested class of small monochrome hobbyist modules, not automatically to OLED televisions, laptop panels, gaming monitors, other controller families, or modules run at different brightness, temperatures, or duty cycles. The written account describes a Russian-language video, so Hackaday’s article is an accessible secondary description of the experiment rather than a full published test dataset.

How to reduce uneven wear on a small OLED

If your display shows fixed labels, status text, or icons for long periods, reducing how consistently the same pixels stay lit may help limit uneven wear. Hackaday’s report suggests these practical approaches; it does not test or guarantee their effectiveness:

  • Move static text or labels occasionally so they do not remain in exactly the same position.
  • Turn the display off when nobody needs to see it.
  • Use a screensaver or an equivalent timeout that blanks or changes the display when idle.

For a comparable module, search for “0.96 inch SSD1306 128×64 I2C OLED display module.” A listing for an AZDelivery module describes that class of product, including 128×64 resolution, Arduino and Raspberry Pi compatibility, and 3.3–5 V operation. See the AZDelivery listing. Listings, sellers, prices, stock, and product details can change; a comparable module is not proof that another unit will reproduce the same wear pattern.
