Yes, a PlayStation game can become unavailable or lose important features after its studio closes, but the closure itself does not automatically delete the game from every buyer’s library. The practical risks are a publisher delisting the title, a license expiring, a required third-party account being closed or unlinked, problems with the purchasing PlayStation account, or online servers being retired. PlayStation’s US terms describe a Store purchase as a personal license rather than ownership, so continued access depends on the license and the services the game needs. An offline-capable game is usually less exposed than an online-only one, while a disc can reduce storefront dependence without guaranteeing that every feature will work forever.
Do you lose a PlayStation game when its studio shuts down?
No—not automatically. A studio can close while its publisher, rights holder, PlayStation Store listing, authentication systems and online servers continue operating. In that situation, a purchaser may keep downloading and playing the game normally.
The opposite can also happen. A closure may be followed by a rights transfer, delisting, shutdown of a required account service or retirement of multiplayer servers. Those later decisions—not the corporate closure by itself—are what can remove access or make part of a game unusable. Sony’s published terms explain these mechanisms, but they do not say that every studio closure revokes every buyer’s license.
The safest conclusion is therefore conditional: a studio closure can be one link in the chain that makes a game unavailable, but it is not proof that the game will vanish. Check the game’s publisher, required accounts, online dependencies and region-specific license terms.

What do you actually receive when you buy a digital PlayStation game?
Under the current US PlayStation Terms of Service, a Store purchase is a license for private, non-commercial use, not a transfer of ownership. The terms state: “When you order or purchase a product from PlayStation Store, you buy a personal license to use that product for private, non-commercial use.” They then clarify: “This means you can use a Product in the ways described in the license, but do not own the product.” Read the full PlayStation Network Terms of Service for the wording that applies to your account and region.
That distinction does not mean a game disappears whenever Sony or a publisher changes its mind. It means your right to use the software is defined by the license, account rules and other conditions rather than by property ownership of a permanent copy.
Access is tied to the account that made the purchase. The US terms warn that deleting or closing the account may cause the customer to lose access to purchased content. If a publisher requires a linked third-party account, unlinking it—or closing that account—may also end access. Keep the purchasing account secure, retain access to its email and two-factor authentication, and avoid closing it merely to tidy up old accounts.
What does delisting mean for people who already bought the game?
Delisting usually stops new sales; it does not necessarily terminate every existing buyer’s access at that same moment. A game can disappear from Store search results while remaining in an existing purchaser’s library. However, PlayStation does not promise a universal, permanent right to redownload every delisted title.
The terms say content may be removed and licenses may expire. They place responsibility on the customer to access content before removal and to maintain authorized storage and safekeeping of downloaded content. They also put the risk of loss from corruption or a failed hard drive on the customer and state that PlayStation is not obligated to provide replacement copies. Those clauses make a local download useful, but they are not a guarantee that a downloaded file will remain installable on every future console.

In practical terms, a delisted game may remain playable if it is already installed and does not require a live service. A console reset, storage failure, license-recognition problem or move to a different platform can expose a separate redownload or compatibility issue. Do not assume that “I bought it once” guarantees a replacement download indefinitely.
Which is safer long term: an offline game or an online-only game?
Offline-capable games generally have fewer points of failure. If the base game launches without contacting a server, does not require a publisher login and includes its essential content on the console, a studio’s closure is less likely to stop ordinary single-player play.

That is a lower risk, not a permanent-access promise. An apparently offline game can still require a first-run authentication check, a downloadable data pack, a platform entitlement check or a third-party account. Some single-player campaigns also depend on servers for progression, user-generated content or anti-cheat validation.
Online-only games face the highest exposure. The PlayStation Software EULA says software is licensed, not sold, and allows Sony to end online and network features for software that uses online servers. It also says that when online services are discontinued, offline modes may remain accessible, but “offline modes are not guaranteed and may change or end at our discretion.” For a game built around a persistent world, server retirement can effectively end the product even if its icon remains on your console.
| Dependency | What can fail after a closure or delisting | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Store license | Removal from sale, license expiry or an account-entitlement error | Whether the title is sold by the publisher and supported in your region |
| PlayStation account | Loss of access if the purchasing account is closed, compromised or unavailable | That you control the account email, password and two-factor authentication |
| Third-party account | Unlinking or closure can block launch, saves or multiplayer | Whether a publisher login is mandatory and whether accounts can be unlinked |
| Online servers | Multiplayer, authentication, progression or the entire game can stop working | Server requirements, shutdown notices and whether there is a real offline mode |
| Downloadable content | Story chapters, characters or patches may be unavailable separately | Whether essential content is on the disc or requires a live download |
Are physical PlayStation games safer than digital purchases?
A boxed disc can reduce dependence on the PlayStation Store for the base game, but it is not a complete preservation guarantee. PlayStation’s terms treat a boxed game as a physical good, while digital products are described as personal licenses. With a disc, you retain the original distribution medium even if the Store listing disappears.

The disc may not contain a complete, final build. Some releases require a large patch, a content download or online activation before they are usable. Multiplayer, cloud saves, downloadable expansions and account-linked rewards can still disappear when servers or third-party services close. A disc also does not preserve a game if the console cannot read that generation’s media or if the title’s core logic is server-side.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before choosing physical media, ask:
- Can the base game launch and remain playable with the console disconnected from the internet?
- Does the disc contain the campaign, or is an essential download mandatory?
- Are important missions, characters or modes delivered as separate DLC?
- Does the game require a publisher account even for single-player play?
- Will your console generation support the disc without an online entitlement?
Physical is therefore best viewed as risk reduction for the base software, not a promise that every feature survives a studio or service shutdown.
How can you assess a game’s risk before buying it?
Use a title-specific checklist rather than assuming that “digital” or “physical” tells the whole story.
- Identify the rights holder. The studio that made a game may not control its Store listing, trademarks or servers. Find the publisher named on the product page and in the game’s legal notices.
- Read the online requirements. Look for “online play required,” “internet connection required,” “third-party account required” and similar language in the Store listing, box and support pages.
- Separate the base game from DLC. A disc may include only a license key or a small installer while essential expansions are delivered digitally.
- Check the offline mode. Determine whether you can start a new game, load a save and complete the main content without a server. Marketing descriptions are not enough when the game has always-online authentication.
- Consider the platform and region. License terms, Store availability and consumer-law protections can differ outside the United States. A title sold in one country may be unavailable in another.
- Plan for storage and account continuity. Keep the console updated, retain transaction records and protect the account that owns the entitlement. A local backup cannot override licensing rules, but it can reduce dependence on a fresh download.
What should you do if a purchased game shows a padlock?
A padlock commonly indicates that the console cannot currently verify the game’s license. It does not by itself prove that the publisher has removed the title.
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that purchased the game and confirm that you are using the correct console profile.
- Check the game’s Store page or your transaction history to verify the purchase and edition.
- Restore licenses using Sony’s official restore-licenses procedure. On current PlayStation consoles, this is available from the account or settings area under the option to restore licenses; the exact menu wording can vary by system software version.
- Restart the console, install available system and game updates, and test the title again.
- If the game requires a publisher account, confirm that the account is still linked and that the service has not been discontinued.
- Contact PlayStation Support with the transaction ID if the entitlement is missing.
Restoring a license can fix account-recognition or entitlement synchronization. It cannot restart discontinued servers, recreate a deleted third-party account or guarantee that removed DLC is still downloadable. Sony’s game troubleshooting guidance is the appropriate next step when the problem is not limited to licensing.

Can you get a refund if a game later becomes unavailable?
A later shutdown is not automatically a refund event. In the United States, the current PlayStation Store cancellation policy generally allows a game or add-on purchase to be canceled within 14 days if downloading or streaming has not started, subject to the policy’s conditions and exceptions.
That is a cancellation window, not a promise that a digital purchase remains permanently accessible. If a title becomes unplayable months or years later because servers close, the outcome depends on the applicable policy, consumer law, the facts of the case and any remedy the publisher or platform chooses to offer. Keep receipts and support correspondence, but do not treat a possible refund as a preservation plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What preservation steps are worth taking?
No consumer step can guarantee permanent access to a licensed product, but a few habits reduce avoidable loss:
- Protect the purchasing account: use a unique password, current recovery details and two-factor authentication.
- Download while the title is available: this may help with immediate access, although PlayStation does not promise perpetual redownloads or replacement copies.
- Keep enough storage free: a failed drive or forced reinstall can turn a working local installation into a redownload problem.
- Save offline-compatible data locally: cloud saves are convenient but depend on account and service availability.
- Record the edition and entitlements: note whether you bought a standard, deluxe or bundled version and which DLC was included.
- Watch for official notices: publisher and platform announcements usually provide more reliable shutdown dates than social-media speculation.
Do not attempt to bypass authentication or redistribute downloaded files. Such actions can violate the license and may create account or legal problems without preserving the service you need.

Think of a digital PlayStation purchase as an account-bound permission to use software under stated terms. The permission is often durable in ordinary use, but it is not the same as owning a transferable copy that must remain supported forever.

A studio closure is only one possible trigger in a longer chain. The decisive questions are who controls the rights, whether the Store still recognizes the license, whether your PlayStation and third-party accounts remain active, and how much of the game depends on servers. An offline-capable title that is already installed is usually in a stronger position than an online-only game, while a physical disc can reduce Store risk for the base game but cannot preserve server features or mandatory downloads.
Because no official source provides a reliable percentage for games lost specifically after studio closures, avoid blanket claims such as “all digital games disappear” or “purchased games can never be taken away.” Evaluate each title’s dependencies and keep your account and storage in order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer a digital PlayStation game to another account?
Normally, no. The license is attached to the purchasing account and is generally not transferable, although local law can impose additional rights. Console sharing features may let other profiles use some purchases on an authorized console, but that does not move ownership of the license.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWill deleting a game from my console delete my purchase?
Deleting the installed files usually removes only the local copy, not the account transaction. The risk is that a later reinstall may be impossible if the title has been removed, the license has expired or a required service has closed, so do not confuse uninstalling with permanent preservation.
Do PlayStation cloud saves survive a publisher server shutdown?
Cloud saves are a platform account service, while a publisher’s game servers are separate. A shutdown may leave the save file available but make it unusable if the game can no longer authenticate or if progression was stored on the publisher’s servers.
Can consumer-protection law change the result outside the United States?
Yes. Digital-content rights, remedies for defective services and cancellation rules vary by country or region. The US terms and policy are useful references, but check the PlayStation terms and statutory protections for the account’s actual region.
