Creating an RDS (Relational Database Service) in AWS Cloud means creating a managed RDS DB instance—not merely an empty database. You choose an engine such as MySQL or PostgreSQL, configure storage, networking, security, backups, credentials, and availability, wait for Available, then connect through the instance endpoint.

This guide uses the AWS Management Console and focuses on a beginner-friendly MySQL or PostgreSQL deployment. The walkthrough labels disposable-lab choices separately from production recommendations. A running RDS instance, allocated storage, snapshots, public IPv4 addresses, Secrets Manager secrets, and related services can generate charges, so plan cleanup before creating temporary resources.

Key takeaways

  • An RDS DB instance must be created inside a VPC, and its DB subnet group must span subnets in at least two Availability Zones.
  • Standard create exposes networking, security, backup, maintenance, and availability settings that Easy create hides.
  • For most new open-source applications, MySQL or PostgreSQL is the practical starting point; engine versions, instance classes, and features vary by Region.
  • A private RDS database should normally accept traffic from an application security group rather than from 0.0.0.0/0.
  • Single-AZ is usually appropriate for a disposable lab, while production workloads require an explicit availability, backup, recovery, and cost decision.
  • AWS pricing depends on compute, storage, IOPS, backups, data transfer, public IPv4 use, and optional services—not only the DB instance class.

What is Amazon RDS?

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) is a managed relational-database service for Db2, MariaDB, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, and PostgreSQL. AWS provisions the database environment and provides management features such as automated backups, snapshots, monitoring integrations, patching workflows, and high-availability deployment options. See the Amazon RDS overview and supported engines for the current service scope.

RDS is managed infrastructure, not a serverless database and not a replacement for database administration. AWS manages much of the underlying operating environment, but the customer still designs schemas, writes queries, creates indexes, manages database users and permissions, handles application connection pools, configures security groups, controls costs, and tunes engine-specific behavior.

Which RDS engine should you choose?

Choose the engine that matches your application, SQL behavior, drivers, extensions, licensing requirements, and operational experience. MySQL and PostgreSQL are the simplest choices for this tutorial, but the available versions, instance classes, and features depend on the selected AWS Region.

Engine Good default use case Important qualification
PostgreSQL Feature-rich open-source applications, extensions, and standards-oriented workloads Check extension and version compatibility before migrating
MySQL Broad application and tooling compatibility Confirm storage-engine, character-set, and version behavior
MariaDB Applications built specifically for MariaDB Do not assume complete compatibility with every MySQL version
Microsoft SQL Server Microsoft SQL Server applications Edition, licensing, and Windows/.NET requirements affect cost and compatibility
Oracle Oracle-compatible enterprise workloads Licensing choices and enterprise features can materially affect cost
Db2 IBM Db2 workloads Licensing and Marketplace or IBM registration requirements may apply
Aurora Cloud-optimized MySQL- or PostgreSQL-compatible workloads Aurora is a separate product family with different architecture and pricing

Before selecting an engine version, verify the current Region-specific choices in the RDS getting-started documentation and the relevant PostgreSQL or MySQL documentation. Avoid publishing or automating a version-specific assumption without checking the target Region on the day of deployment.

What must you prepare before creating an RDS DB instance?

Prepare the following before opening the creation wizard:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An AWS account with billing enabled, or an account and plan eligible for the applicable Free Tier or credits.
  • An IAM identity with permission to use RDS, VPC and security-group resources, and—if selected—Secrets Manager and KMS.
  • A deliberate AWS Region, usually the same Region as the application.
  • A VPC and a DB subnet group using subnets in at least two Availability Zones.
  • A database security group that allows the selected database port only from the application security group or a narrowly controlled administrator source.
  • An engine and compatible version.
  • An estimated instance class, storage type, initial storage amount, and storage-autoscaling ceiling.
  • An initial database name, master username, and credential-management plan.
  • Backup-retention, maintenance, monitoring, encryption, and deletion-protection requirements.
  • A client such as mysql, psql, pgAdmin, or an application running on a network path that can reach the database.

A normal production design places RDS in private subnets and connects from an application in the same VPC or through a controlled network connection. Public accessibility can simplify a short learning exercise from a laptop, but public exposure should not be the default production architecture. AWS describes the relevant VPC, subnet, and security preparation in its RDS environment setup documentation.

How do you create an RDS database in the AWS Management Console?

The following procedure creates an RDS DB instance through Standard create. Console labels and available options can vary by Region, engine, account type, and AWS interface updates.

1. Choose the AWS Region and open RDS

  1. Sign in to the AWS Management Console.
  2. Open Amazon RDS.
  3. Select the Region where the application will run.
  4. Choose Databases in the navigation pane.
  5. Choose Create database.
  6. Select Standard create.

Keeping the database near the application generally reduces latency and avoids unnecessary cross-Region networking complexity. The RDS DB-instance creation documentation is the authoritative reference when the console differs from these labels.

2. Select the engine and version

Choose MySQL or PostgreSQL for the main tutorial path. You can instead select MariaDB, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or Db2 when the application requires that engine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then select the engine version and, where offered, the database management type, edition, and license model. Engine versions are not interchangeable: confirm driver support, SQL compatibility, extensions, parameter-group family, restore and upgrade paths, Region availability, and support status before committing to a version.

3. Choose a template

Templates are starting points, not guarantees about cost or suitability:

Template Practical meaning Use with caution
Free tier Designed for eligible introductory usage Eligibility depends on account age, plan, Region, engine, class, credits, and current AWS terms
Sandbox A lower-cost learning or development starting point Sandbox does not automatically mean free
Production May preselect more durable settings such as Multi-AZ, Provisioned IOPS SSD, and deletion protection A preselected setting is not proof that the design matches your workload or budget

For a disposable lab, choose a small single-AZ configuration only after checking its current availability and eligibility. Do not treat db.t3.micro as universally available, free, or suitable for production.

4. Configure the DB instance

Enter an identifier such as app-db-dev. The identifier names the RDS DB instance; it is not necessarily the hostname used by a client.

For the master username, use a deliberate administrative name such as app_admin. A non-default name is not a substitute for strong authentication or least privilege, and the master account should not be the everyday application account.

For a disposable lab, select a currently available small burstable instance class and the smallest realistic storage amount. Select General Purpose SSD for a normal beginner workload. Select Provisioned IOPS SSD only when the workload needs more predictable or higher I/O performance and the additional cost is justified.

Storage autoscaling can protect a growing database from running out of space, but the maximum-storage threshold can also increase future cost. Set a deliberate ceiling rather than accepting an unlimited-looking default.

5. Choose how AWS manages credentials

For a production-oriented deployment, prefer Managed in AWS Secrets Manager when the creation flow offers it. RDS can generate and manage the master password in Secrets Manager, but Secrets Manager charges and IAM/KMS permissions may apply. AWS identifies this option as the recommended secure credential-management technique in the RDS creation workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A self-managed password can be acceptable for a temporary lab, but never commit the password to Git, place it in shell history or screenshots, reuse it elsewhere, or expose it in client-side application code. Rotate a lab password after testing. If an automatically generated password was not saved, AWS says the password cannot be viewed again through the normal creation flow; modify the DB instance and change the master password instead.

6. Configure storage and encryption

Use General Purpose SSD as the normal starting point for development and many general workloads. Provisioned IOPS SSD is intended for workloads requiring more predictable I/O performance. Magnetic storage is not offered for new DB instances according to AWS environment-setup documentation.

Set allocated storage to the smallest realistic capacity that satisfies the engine and workload. Enable encryption at rest for production and sensitive data. An AWS-managed KMS key is simpler; a customer-managed KMS key can provide organizational control and custom key-policy requirements, but it adds operational responsibility.

Storage, IOPS, throughput, backup storage, and data transfer are separate cost dimensions. Review the official Amazon RDS pricing dimensions instead of treating storage as part of a single flat RDS price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Configure connectivity and security groups

Select the application VPC and a DB subnet group whose subnets span at least two Availability Zones. Set Public access to No for a normal production design. Select an existing database security group or create one, and use the engine’s standard port unless a documented requirement says otherwise.

Engine Typical port
MariaDB 3306
MySQL 3306
PostgreSQL 5432
Oracle 1521
SQL Server 1433
Db2 50000

The safest common rule allows the database security group to receive the database port from the application’s security group. Do not open port 3306 or 5432 to 0.0.0.0/0. For administrator access, use a VPN, bastion, corporate network, approved administrator IP, or another tightly controlled source.

A security group provides stateful network filtering; it does not replace database authentication, authorization, encryption, or application-layer security. A security group rule allowing an administrator’s public IP does not automatically allow an EC2 application. Application traffic needs a rule referencing the EC2 application security group or another correct source.

  • High Quality PCB: 6-layer PCB made by 2oz thickened copper and server grade level material

8. Configure database authentication

Password authentication is the simplest option for this tutorial. For production, evaluate Secrets Manager-managed credentials, IAM database authentication where supported, separate application and administrative users, least-privilege grants, TLS/SSL enforcement, credential rotation, and recovery procedures. The application should use its own restricted database user rather than the master user.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Set additional configuration

Depending on the engine and console flow, review these settings:

  • Initial database name: The first database created inside the DB instance.
  • Parameter group: Engine configuration parameters. A parameter group is not a security group.
  • Option group: Engine-specific options where applicable.
  • Automated backups: Retention period, backup window, and point-in-time recovery behavior.
  • Maintenance: Maintenance window and automatic minor-version upgrade policy.
  • Monitoring: CloudWatch log exports and performance-monitoring options where useful.
  • Deletion protection: Enable it for production; disable it only when deliberate destruction is required.
  • Tags: Add environment, owner, application, and cost-center tags. Consider copying tags to snapshots.

10. Decide between Single-AZ and Multi-AZ

Disable Multi-AZ for a disposable lab when lower cost matters more than automatic failover. Evaluate or enable Multi-AZ for production when the workload requires higher availability.

Deployment What it provides Typical trade-off
Single-AZ DB instance One primary database instance in one Availability Zone Lower cost, but no standby in another Availability Zone for automatic failover
Traditional Multi-AZ DB instance A primary and standby in separate Availability Zones Higher availability and failover capability, with additional cost and possible write or commit latency from synchronous replication
Multi-AZ DB cluster One writer and two reader DB instances across three Availability Zones Different endpoints, behavior, cost, and read-scaling model; currently supported only for MySQL and PostgreSQL in the cited AWS documentation

A traditional Multi-AZ standby is for availability and failover, not ordinary read scaling. Do not confuse a Multi-AZ DB instance deployment with a read replica or with a Multi-AZ DB cluster. AWS discusses the traditional deployment in its Multi-AZ single-standby documentation and the cluster architecture in its Multi-AZ DB cluster documentation.

11. Create the DB instance and wait for availability

Review the configuration, then choose Create database. The instance normally begins with status Creating. When the status changes to Available, open the instance details and record the endpoint, port, database name, Availability Zone information, security groups, encryption status, backup retention, and instance class.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Provisioning usually takes several minutes; AWS getting-started examples note that provisioning can take up to approximately 20 minutes in some cases, depending on instance class and allocated storage. The duration is not a guarantee.

How do you connect to an RDS MySQL database?

Install a MySQL-compatible client on a machine with network reachability to the RDS instance. Substitute the endpoint shown in the RDS console; do not use the DB instance identifier as the hostname.

mysql
  --host=<RDS_ENDPOINT>
  --port=3306
  --user=<USERNAME>
  --password
  <DATABASE_NAME>

The client prompts for the password. Keep the password out of the command itself so it does not appear in process listings, shell history, or copied documentation.

How do you connect to an RDS PostgreSQL database?

Use psql or a client such as pgAdmin from a network location that can reach the private or public endpoint according to the configured design. The following command requests SSL/TLS:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
psql
  "host=<RDS_ENDPOINT> port=5432 dbname=<DATABASE_NAME> user=<USERNAME> sslmode=require"

RDS for PostgreSQL supports standard clients including psql and pgAdmin, and PostgreSQL connections can use SSL/TLS. Consult the RDS for PostgreSQL documentation for engine-specific connection and encryption details.

How do you verify that the RDS connection works?

After connecting, run a version query and a timestamp query. The version result confirms that the client reached a database engine; the timestamp confirms that SQL execution works.

);

INSERT INTO connection_test (id, message)
VALUES (1, 'RDS connection works');

SELECT * FROM connection_test;

Drop the test table when it is no longer needed:

DROP TABLE connection_test;

MySQL and PostgreSQL both support the example’s basic table syntax, but production schema migrations should still be tested against the exact engine version selected for the application.

Why can a correct RDS username and password still fail?

Credentials cannot overcome a blocked network path. Check connection failures in this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the RDS status is Available.
  2. Confirm that the console and client refer to the same Region and endpoint.
  3. Confirm the correct port for the selected engine.
  4. Confirm that the client has a route to the VPC.
  5. Check the DB subnet group and route tables.
  6. Check that the security group allows the client’s security group or approved IP on the correct port.
  7. Check network ACLs for blocked traffic.
  8. Check DNS resolution for the endpoint.
  9. Confirm that a private database is not being accessed from an unconnected external laptop.
  10. Check TLS mode, certificates, and client-driver compatibility.

If a database is unintentionally public, remove broad inbound rules and move toward private access with an application in the VPC or a controlled VPN, bastion, CloudShell-in-VPC, or equivalent network path. Changing network settings can require preparation and may cause downtime.

How do you create an RDS DB instance with the AWS CLI?

The AWS CLI is useful for repeatable provisioning, but the following command is illustrative rather than universally executable. Replace the Region, subnet group, security group, engine version if required, instance class, and storage values after checking current availability.

aws rds create-db-instance
  --db-instance-identifier app-db-dev
  --db-instance-class db.t3.micro
  --engine mysql
  --master-username app_admin
  --manage-master-user-password
  --allocated-storage 20
  --backup-retention-period 1
  --no-publicly-accessible
  --vpc-security-group-ids sg-0123456789abcdef0
  --db-subnet-group-name app-db-subnets
  --region us-east-1

The command uses Secrets Manager-managed master credentials rather than placing a password in the command. The db.t3.micro value is an example-sized class, not a universal recommendation. Check the current AWS CLI create-db-instance reference for required and supported parameters.

Wait for the instance to become available:

aws rds wait db-instance-available
  --db-instance-identifier app-db-dev
  --region us-east-1

Retrieve the endpoint and port:

aws rds describe-db-instances
  --db-instance-identifier app-db-dev
  --query 'DBInstances[0].Endpoint.{Address:Address,Port:Port}'
  --output table
  --region us-east-1

The AWS CLI RDS examples provide additional reproducible commands.

How should you harden an RDS database for production?

Production hardening means designing recovery, access, availability, and observability together rather than simply clicking a Production template.

  • Use private connectivity: Keep the DB instance private and connect through the application VPC or a controlled network path.
  • Restrict network access: Allow the database port from the application security group, not the entire internet.
  • Use least privilege: Create separate application, migration, reporting, and administrative accounts with only the required grants.
  • Protect credentials: Use Secrets Manager-managed credentials or another approved secret workflow; never hard-code passwords.
  • Encrypt data: Enable encryption at rest and use TLS/SSL for connections where required.
  • Choose availability deliberately: Evaluate traditional Multi-AZ or a Multi-AZ DB cluster according to engine, failover, read-scaling, and budget requirements.
  • Plan recovery: Set automated-backup retention, create manual snapshots before material changes, and test restores.
  • Enable deletion protection: Prevent accidental deletion of valuable production data.
  • Monitor: Review CloudWatch logs, metrics, performance options, storage growth, connections, and alarms.
  • Control spend: Tag resources, set budgets, and monitor optional services such as Secrets Manager and RDS Proxy.

RDS management reduces infrastructure work, but it does not make an untested backup a recovery plan or an unrestricted database a secure application.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How much does an RDS database cost?

There is no universal monthly RDS price. Cost depends on Region, engine, instance class, Single-AZ or Multi-AZ architecture, storage type and size, provisioned IOPS or throughput, backup retention, data transfer, public IPv4 use, monitoring, Secrets Manager, RDS Proxy, and whether the instance runs continuously.

AWS’s RDS pricing page identifies instance hours, storage, backup storage, data transfer, and public IPv4 charges as relevant cost components. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator with the actual Region, utilization, storage growth, backup retention, and architecture assumptions. A calculator estimate is planning information, not an invoice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free Tier eligibility depends on when the AWS account was created, the selected plan, Region, engine, instance class, credits, and current AWS terms. Check the AWS Billing console and current Free Tier terms before assuming the tutorial will cost nothing. Multi-AZ deployments and some advanced features may not qualify for introductory allowances.

How do you delete a temporary RDS instance safely?

Do not leave a lab instance running after testing. Before deletion, decide whether the data must be retained and whether a final snapshot is required.

  1. Stop applications that use the database or redirect them to another database.
  2. Confirm whether a manual snapshot or final snapshot is needed.
  3. Check automated-backup retention and understand that automated backups and manual snapshots are different resources with different retention and billing behavior.
  4. Confirm that deletion protection is disabled only when deliberate deletion is intended.
  5. In the RDS console, select the DB instance, choose Actions, choose Delete, and review the final-snapshot and automated-backup options.
  6. After deletion, inspect snapshots, public IPv4 addresses, RDS Proxy, Secrets Manager secrets, and other related resources that may continue to incur charges.

For a deliberately disposable instance, the CLI command is:

aws rds delete-db-instance
  --db-instance-identifier app-db-dev
  --skip-final-snapshot
  --delete-automated-backups
  --region us-east-1

Never use --skip-final-snapshot for valuable data without an explicit backup decision. Deletion protection is supposed to block accidental deletion; disabling it should follow confirmation that the instance is not serving production traffic and that required recovery data exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you use Aurora, EC2, or another AWS database service?

Standard RDS is a strong fit when the application needs managed relational SQL, joins, transactions, and a supported MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle, or Db2 engine. Other services are better when the workload or required control differs.

Option Consider it when Main trade-off
Amazon Aurora The workload is MySQL- or PostgreSQL-compatible and needs Aurora-specific architecture, availability, or scaling features Different architecture, compatibility considerations, and pricing; not automatically cheaper or simpler
Self-managed database on EC2 You need OS-level control, unsupported extensions, custom agents, full superuser control, or an unavailable version You own patching, backups, failover, monitoring, storage, and security
Amazon DynamoDB The application needs a NoSQL key-value or document model rather than relational joins and transactions Different data model and access-pattern design
Amazon ElastiCache You need a cache to reduce latency or database load A cache is not normally the primary durable relational database
Amazon Redshift You need analytics or data-warehouse workloads Designed for analytics rather than ordinary transactional application persistence

RDS Proxy can help applications that create many short-lived connections, including some serverless workloads, but RDS Proxy adds another network and billing component. The RDS Proxy product page and RDS Proxy pricing page should be checked before adding it to a modest application.

The AWS CLI and CloudShell are management and access tools, not free substitutes for the database resources they create. The AWS CLI and AWS CloudShell can make repeatable workflows easier, while the underlying RDS instance and associated resources remain subject to billing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an RDS DB instance the same thing as a database?

An RDS DB instance is the managed compute and database environment that AWS provisions, while an initial database is a database created inside that environment. The DB instance has the endpoint, storage, security groups, backups, and instance-level settings used by one or more databases according to the engine’s behavior.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I connect to a private RDS database from my laptop?

A laptop outside the VPC cannot directly connect to a private RDS endpoint unless the laptop has a controlled network path into the VPC. Use a VPN, Direct Connect, bastion host, approved private access design, or another supported path; a correct username and password alone are not sufficient.

Does Multi-AZ provide a read replica?

A traditional RDS Multi-AZ DB instance deployment provides a standby for availability and failover, not ordinary read scaling. A Multi-AZ DB cluster has one writer and two reader DB instances across three Availability Zones, but its endpoints, behavior, supported engines, and pricing differ.

What should I do if I forgot the RDS master password?

Modify the RDS DB instance and change the master password. AWS states that an automatically generated master password cannot be viewed again through the normal creation flow, so credentials should be stored through an approved secret-management process.

The Bottom Line

For a first AWS relational database, create a MySQL or PostgreSQL RDS DB instance with Standard create, a private DB subnet group spanning two Availability Zones, a security group restricted to the application, General Purpose SSD storage, deliberate backup settings, and credentials managed safely. Use Single-AZ only for a disposable lab when appropriate, evaluate Multi-AZ for production, verify the endpoint with a real client, and delete temporary resources or preserve them with an explicit snapshot decision.
