Review an AI-generated pull request as an untrusted draft: first confirm that it matches the issue and repository boundaries, then test its behavior, security, dependencies, and types before anyone merges it. To catch duplicate types, inspect both declarations and resolved meaning—TypeScript can reject two declarations with the same name, while a type-aware linter can expose union or intersection members that are duplicates even when their names differ.
A qualified human must understand, test, and approve AI-assisted code before production. The workflow below combines repository-level review with a focused TypeScript pass, so a seemingly harmless generated patch does not add conflicting models, weaken validation, or hide errors behind compiler settings.
How do I establish what an AI-generated pull request is supposed to change?
Start with intent and scope, not with the first changed line. Read the issue, pull-request description, acceptance criteria, affected modules, and the repository’s local instructions. Then ask the author or coding agent to identify generated files, new dependencies, migrations, and assumptions. GitHub says its Copilot code review can gather full-project context and apply repository- or path-specific instructions, but that context is useful only when the instructions describe the actual architecture and review criteria (GitHub Copilot code review documentation).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Map the boundary. List the packages, services, APIs, database models, configuration files, and tests touched by the diff. Flag any file outside the stated issue scope.
- Compare neighboring code. Open the closest existing implementation for the same endpoint, event, command, or domain object. Generated code often looks plausible while violating a project convention that is visible only nearby.
- Check assumptions. Write down implied choices such as optional versus required fields, default values, error semantics, authorization rules, retry behavior, and data ownership. A reviewer can then verify each choice instead of accepting the generated wording as a specification.
- Trace new dependencies and migrations. Confirm why each package, schema change, generated client, or migration is needed, whether it is maintained and appropriately licensed, and how a failed deployment or rollback is handled.
If the patch cannot be explained in those terms, pause line-by-line review and ask for clarification. A small-looking generated change can cross a package or service boundary and require a broader approval path.

Why must AI output be treated as untrusted code?
Because generated code can contain bugs, security issues, and subtle logic errors even when it compiles. Microsoft’s VS Code guidance says, “AI-generated code can contain bugs, security issues, or subtle logic errors. Always treat AI output as a starting point that needs review,” and recommends review before commit or merge, tests, and inspection of edge cases, error handling, assumptions, validation, injection risks, and hardcoded secrets (VS Code best practices).
The UK Home Office standard is equally explicit: “AI-assisted outputs MUST be reviewed and approved by a human before reaching production,” and “AI-assisted code MUST meet the same security expectations as human-written code” (Home Office engineering guidance). Apply that rule even when an automated reviewer has already left a green-looking status.
- Read every changed execution path, including error and cleanup paths.
- Test malformed, missing, oversized, duplicated, and unauthorized inputs where the feature accepts data.
- Look for secrets, unsafe interpolation, injection opportunities, insecure defaults, and logs that expose sensitive values.
- Confirm that tests prove the new behavior rather than merely increasing line coverage.
- Validate every automated review comment and one-click patch. GitHub warns that Copilot can miss quality problems, hallucinate findings, or suggest insecure or incorrect fixes; comments still require human validation and tests (Copilot responsible-use limitations).
How should I review behavior instead of just style?
Walk the changed code through the cases a production system will encounter. Formatting and naming matter, but they do not establish that the feature is correct.
Exercise the complete path
For each changed handler, service, job, or command, follow a normal request from input to persistence and response. Then repeat it with boundary values, missing records, malformed data, timeouts, retries, partial failures, and duplicate submissions. Check authorization at the point of access, not only in a controller or route that may be bypassed by another caller.
Verify data and dependency decisions
Compare validation with the domain’s actual invariants. Check that a generated database query, serializer, transport model, or API client preserves nullability, units, encoding, and error contracts. A dependency should have a concrete purpose, a compatible license, a maintained release path, and a testable failure mode; “the generator added it” is not a justification.
Demand meaningful test evidence
Read the assertions, fixtures, and setup, not just the coverage percentage. A test that snapshots an output without checking authorization or invalid input may pass while the important behavior is broken. Add a regression test for each defect found during review, including a duplicate-type failure when the issue is type-related.

What kinds of duplicate types can an AI-generated patch introduce?
Duplicate types fall into two groups. Textual duplicates are repeated declarations or names that the compiler can often identify. Semantic duplicates are different-looking constituents that resolve to the same type and can make a model needlessly complex or conceal a design mistake.
Two aliases or declarations in one scope
Two declarations such as type User = ... in the same scope normally produce a duplicate-identifier error. Search the diff and repository for repeated exported names, interfaces, aliases, enums, and namespaces, including generated files that may sit beside hand-written models. Also search for a local declaration that reuses an imported type name.
An imported name colliding with a local declaration
TypeScript’s 3.7 release notes document a conflict where an imported SomeType and a local SomeType occupy the same name. If the local declaration was accidental, rename or remove it. If the intent was to extend an external declaration, use proper module augmentation rather than shadowing the import (TypeScript 3.7 release notes).
Repeated interfaces that merge
Repeated interface declarations can merge when they are compatible. That behavior is not proof that duplication is desirable: inspect whether every repeated property has the same type and whether the combined public contract is intentional. TypeScript permits some duplicate members across declaration blocks but rejects incompatible or same-block duplicates, as described in the TypeScript 2.0 release notes (TypeScript 2.0 release notes).
Redundant union and intersection constituents
Semantic duplication appears in expressions such as string | string, A | string when A resolves to string, or repeated members of an intersection. Names can differ while the resulting type is the same. The @typescript-eslint/no-duplicate-type-constituents rule targets these cases and can automatically fix some reports (typescript-eslint rule documentation).
Parallel models with the same shape
Compare API, database, transport, and domain-model directories for near-identical structures, even when variables, functions, or type names were changed. Microsoft’s duplicate-code exercise notes that renamed structures can hide duplication and increase maintenance, debugging, and testing costs (Microsoft Learn duplicate-code exercise). Decide whether each model represents a real boundary or whether the generated patch created a second source of truth.

How can I search a repository for duplicate type definitions?
Use a layered search: names first, then declarations, then resolved meaning.
- Inspect the diff. Search added lines for
export type, type, interface, enum, declaration files, and generated model directories. - Search globally. Search for each newly exported name and for imports of that name. Include tests, fixtures, declaration files, and generated output; a collision may be outside the edited directory.
- Check imports against locals. In each changed module, compare imported identifiers with local declarations and aliases. An accidental local shadow can compile differently from the author’s intention.
- Normalize the shapes. Compare property names, optionality, literal values, generic parameters, and nullability. Two interfaces with different names may still be the same model, while two similarly named types may have deliberately different ownership or validation rules.
- Resolve unions and intersections. Ask what each constituent evaluates to after aliases and generics are expanded. Look for repeated members and broad members that subsume narrower ones.
- Run the project’s type and lint checks. Diagnostics provide a second view that text search cannot: they evaluate scopes, declaration merging, and type relationships.
Do not assume a clean text search means the patch is clean. Generated code may place equivalent types in separate modules, and semantic duplicates require the compiler or a type-aware analyzer to resolve aliases.
Which compiler and lint signals should remain visible?
Run the repository’s normal type-check command locally and in continuous integration, then run its type-aware ESLint configuration. Keep diagnostics visible while reviewing; suppressing them can turn a discoverable defect into a later runtime or integration failure.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use the normal TypeScript check
Use the project’s configured command, commonly an invocation that performs a no-emit type check, rather than substituting an ad hoc compiler configuration. Review the first diagnostic and the full error set: fixing one duplicate declaration can expose a second collision or an incompatible merged property.
Do not blanket-enable skipLibCheck to make a pull request green
TypeScript documents that skipLibCheck skips checking declaration files and can allow errors affecting other files to go undetected (TypeScript 2.0 release notes). A narrowly justified setting may be part of an existing migration, but it is not a safe way to hide generated declaration conflicts. Record the reason, scope, and removal plan if the repository already relies on it.
Add a duplicate-constituent rule
Enable @typescript-eslint/no-duplicate-type-constituents in the type-aware lint configuration. Treat auto-fixes as suggestions: the rule can fix some reports, but a reviewer must confirm that removing a constituent does not change a public API or a conditional type’s behavior. Pair this rule with the compiler’s own diagnostics and the repository’s duplicate-code checks where those are already part of the quality gate.

How should I fix a duplicate type without breaking the API?
Choose the remedy from the intended ownership and compatibility requirements, not from the shortest diff. The same compiler error can represent an accidental copy, a missing extension mechanism, or an intentional merged contract.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Situation | Preferred action | Review for |
|---|---|---|
| Accidental second alias or interface in the same scope | Remove the copy or rename it only when it represents a distinct concept | All imports, exports, tests, and serialized names that depend on the original |
| Imported type and local type share a name | Rename the accidental local declaration; use module augmentation when extension is intentional | Module boundaries, downstream consumers, and declaration output |
| Two models represent one stable concept | Consolidate to one source of truth and update references | API compatibility, migration cost, generated clients, and future maintainability |
| Interfaces are intentionally additive | Keep declaration merging only when compatible and documented | Repeated property types, public contract changes, and tests for consumers |
| Union or intersection contains equivalent members | Remove redundant constituents, manually if an automatic fix is incomplete | Alias expansion, generic constraints, and whether the simplified type changes inference |
After the edit, rerun type checking, linting, unit and integration tests, and any generated-code or schema checks. Review the final diff rather than trusting that an auto-fix preserved formatting and exports.
Is AI-assisted review better than a manual-only review?
They solve different problems. Automated review can repeat checks quickly and use repository context, while a qualified human supplies intent, accountability, and judgment about whether a finding or fix is correct.
| Review dimension | Manual-only approach | AI-assisted approach |
|---|---|---|
| Repository context | Depends on the reviewer reading the relevant files and instructions | Can gather full-project context and apply path-specific instructions when those instructions are accurate |
| Defect and security coverage | Strong where the reviewer deliberately exercises behavior and threat cases; limited by time and attention | Can scan broadly, but may miss defects, hallucinate findings, or suggest insecure fixes |
| False positives | Usually resolved through the reviewer’s reasoning before comments are filed | Requires human validation of every comment and suggested patch |
| Review latency | Varies with diff size, expertise, and availability | GitHub Learn describes typical Copilot review latency as under 30 seconds; this is an operational product statement, not a defect-detection or quality statistic |
| Test evidence | Reviewer requests and interprets tests | Automation can point to changed paths, but it cannot replace running and evaluating the relevant tests |
| Explainability and auditability | Reasoning is visible in human comments and approvals | Requires preserving comments, accepted or rejected suggestions, and the human decision trail |
| Repeatability on new pushes | Needs a reviewer to return to the pull request | Can be configured to review new pushes automatically, followed by human re-approval when the change is material |
There is no reliable official prevalence rate for duplicate types or controlled defect-detection rate for AI-generated pull-request review. Do not turn a fast review status into evidence that the patch is safe.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should a pull request receive another review?
Request a fresh review after a material change, even if the original approval is still visible. GitHub’s pull-request lifecycle guidance recommends re-review when edits cross service or package boundaries, alter security- or data-sensitive behavior, or apply a large batch of suggested fixes; automatic reviews can be enabled for new pushes (GitHub pull-request lifecycle guidance).
- A duplicate-type fix changes an exported contract, generated client, database schema, or transport format.
- A reviewer accepts a broad automated patch that touches files outside the original issue.
- Authorization, validation, secrets handling, retries, or data retention changes after approval.
- Tests, compiler options, lint rules, or dependency versions change as part of the fix.
- The original reviewer cannot explain the final behavior from the updated diff.
Re-review the complete final diff, not only the lines changed since the first approval. A replacement type can remove a duplicate while introducing an incompatible optionality or serialization change elsewhere.

How do least-agency controls make AI-assisted review safer?
Security begins before the pull request. OWASP warns about poisoned agent instructions, over-permissioned tools, credential exposure, and unreviewed output volume. Its guidance recommends scoped permissions, no production credentials, a sandbox or disposable environment, pinned and reviewed MCP servers, treating instruction files as code, and logging agent actions (OWASP DevSecOps guidance).
- Give the agent only the repository paths and tools needed for the task.
- Use disposable credentials and environments; never make production secrets available to a coding agent.
- Review repository instruction files for unsafe or irrelevant commands before the agent follows them.
- Pin and review external tool or MCP-server versions and permissions.
- Record AI assistance in the commit or pull request so reviewers can distinguish generated material from human changes and audit the resulting actions.
What is the complete review sequence for an AI-generated pull request?
Use this order when you need a repeatable gate for a generated patch:
- Read the issue, acceptance criteria, pull-request description, repository instructions, and affected-module boundaries.
- Identify generated files, dependencies, migrations, assumptions, and any cross-service or cross-package edits.
- Compare the diff with neighboring implementations and map every changed execution path.
- Run normal, boundary, failure, retry, authorization, and validation cases; inspect secrets and injection risks.
- Search for repeated names, declarations, import/local collisions, near-identical models, and redundant union or intersection constituents.
- Run the repository’s type check, type-aware lint rules, tests, and generated-code or schema validation without hiding diagnostics through blanket
skipLibCheck. - Choose a duplicate-type remedy based on ownership, API compatibility, migration cost, and maintainability; then inspect the complete final diff.
- Record what the agent generated and what humans changed, approve only when the evidence supports the behavior and security, and trigger another review after any material follow-up edit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can two duplicate interfaces be intentional?
Yes. Declaration merging can deliberately build one public contract from multiple blocks, but the merged result must have compatible property types and a clear owner. Check the emitted declarations and consumer-facing API tests so an apparently harmless addition does not silently change what downstream code receives.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What should I inspect when the generated change includes a database migration?
Verify that the migration matches the application model, handles existing rows and nullability, and has a tested rollback or recovery path. Review it together with generated clients and deployment ordering, because a type fix that lands before or after the schema change can leave services disagreeing about the contract.
Does the duplicate-constituent ESLint rule fix every redundant type?
No. It can automatically fix some reports, while other cases require alias expansion and human judgment. After any fix, rerun type checking and confirm that public exports, generic inference, and conditional types still mean what the API promises.
How fast is an automated pull-request review supposed to be?
GitHub Learn gives a typical Copilot review latency of under 30 seconds. That figure describes service timing, not the probability of finding a bug, a security issue, or a duplicate type, so it should never replace tests or human approval.
