Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For the NXP i.MX 8M Quad EVK, the documented NXP Yocto example uses MACHINE=imx8mqevk, the fsl-imx-wayland distribution, and the imx-image-multimedia image target. This walkthrough follows one release consistently: NXP’s i.MX Yocto Project User’s Guide, UG10164, Rev. LF6.12.34_2.1.0, dated September 25, 2025. The commands are documented instructions, not a claim that this build or a board boot was independently tested.
Confirm the board and choose one release
Check that your board is the NXP i.MX 8M Quad EVK, also identified as MCIMX8M-EVK, and note its revision if marked on the board. NXP’s Getting Started with the MCIMX8M-EVK page identifies the kit; other i.MX 8M boards may need different machine configurations. The software identifier in the cited Yocto build example is imx8mqevk.
This tutorial deliberately uses the 6.12.34_2.1.0 BSP release documented in UG10164. NXP’s repository quick start also shows a newer release line, 6.18.20_2.0.0, on branch imx-linux-wrynose. Do not combine that manifest with the older guide’s setup commands unless you have checked the matching current guide, machine support, and image target. Find release documentation through NXP’s Embedded Linux for i.MX Applications Processors page.
Prepare a supported build host
Yocto builds need a compatible Linux build environment and the packages specified by the selected BSP release. Before fetching sources, use the host requirements and prerequisite package list in the same UG10164 release you are following; do not assume that a package list from a different BSP revision or an arbitrary Linux distribution applies. The Yocto Project’s development documentation describes setting up a build environment, including using a container when the host is not a native Linux system. A container does not remove the need to meet that release’s host and resource requirements.

Fetch the matching NXP BSP sources
From NXP’s UG10164 release example, initialize the source tree with the matching manifest, branch, and XML manifest file:
repo init -u https://github.com/nxp-imx/imx-manifest -b imx-linux-walnascar -m imx-6.12.34-2.1.0.xml
Then sync the repositories described by that manifest:

repo sync
Run these commands from the directory where you want the BSP source checkout. The manifest pins the collection of layers and repositories for this release; it is not interchangeable with a manifest from another release line. For background on how hardware-specific BSP layers and machine configuration fit into a Yocto build, see the Yocto Project’s BSP Developer’s Guide.
Initialize the build for the EVK

DISTRO=fsl-imx-wayland MACHINE=imx8mqevk source imx-setup-release.sh -b build-wayland
This sets the release example’s machine and distribution selections and creates or initializes build-wayland. Use the spelling imx8mqevk specified by this guide rather than substituting a similar board-list label. The chosen BSP layer must provide the machine configuration and be compatible with the Yocto release, as described in the Yocto Project’s BSP guidance.
Build the documented image target
After the environment setup completes, run the image target from that initialized shell:

- TURN CODE INTO REAL-WORLD RESULTS — Follow 22+ guided lessons to make LEDs blink, read temperature and distance, move servo and stepper motors, control an LCD and respond to joystick or IR input; ideal for a family weekend build, homeschool unit, coding club or STEM classroom
- MORE PROJECT VARIETY IN ONE ORGANIZED KIT — Includes the UNO R3 controller, LCD1602 with pre-soldered header, breadboard power module, ultrasonic and DHT11 sensors, joystick, IR receiver and remote, SG90 servo, stepper motor, relay, DC motor, fan blade, displays, LEDs, buttons, resistors and jumper wires
- START WITHOUT SOLDERING — Plug-in modules, a solderless breadboard and the pre-soldered LCD help beginners focus on wiring, code and testing; the illustrated component list makes it easier to find each part and move from one lesson to the next
- LEARN THE LOGIC, THEN CREATE YOUR OWN — Use Arduino IDE and the included example code to understand digital input and output, analog sensing, timing, motor control and display functions, then change thresholds, speeds and sequences for alarms, environmental monitors, reaction games and motion projects
- CLEAR SETUP SUPPORT FOR FIRST-TIME BUILDERS — Download the latest tutorial and code, select the UNO board and correct computer port, check component polarity and breadboard rows, and keep power-module input at 9V or below; younger learners should work with an experienced adult
bitbake imx-image-multimedia
NXP describes this example as a Weston Wayland multimedia image without Qt 6. The recipe name does not mean that the image is minimal, and the documented command alone does not establish that it has been written to media or booted successfully on a particular board revision.
What to do after BitBake finishes
A successful BitBake run means the selected target was built in the configured environment. It is a separate task to identify the correct output artifact, write it to the appropriate boot media, and follow the matching release’s installation and boot instructions. Use those instructions for the same BSP release rather than guessing a flashing command or applying directions for another i.MX 8M board. No hardware boot result is claimed here.
