A bookmarklet is a browser bookmark whose saved address is a javascript: URL instead of an http: or https: web address. A bookmarklet is not a miniature executable installed on the operating system. The code is stored as bookmark data and runs only when you activate it. “No conventional installation” does not mean “no security risk”: a bookmarklet can read or alter information available to page scripts on the current site, submit forms, redirect the page, or make network requests if the browser and page policies allow them.

Why should a bookmarklet use void?
A javascript: URL is evaluated like a navigation action. If the final evaluated result is a string, the browser may interpret that string as HTML for a replacement document. MDN describes this string-return behavior and the defensive use of void.

How do you install a bookmarklet in Firefox, Safari, or Edge?
Firefox uses the same stable concept: create or edit a bookmark and paste the bookmarklet into its Location field. Firefox menu names can vary with desktop version, operating system, and interface customization.
On macOS Safari, create or edit a bookmark and place the javascript: URL in its address field. Safari’s toolbar and bookmark-management labels can differ by macOS release.
Microsoft Edge and other Chromium-based browsers generally follow the Chrome procedure, although menu wording, managed-browser policies, and security restrictions can vary. No browser should be described as universally compatible with every bookmarklet.

Mobile bookmarklet support is less uniform than desktop support. A common procedure is to save a page or link as a bookmark, edit the saved bookmark, replace its URL with the complete javascript: code, open the target page, and activate the bookmarklet from the bookmarks list.
Mobile browsers may not offer drag-and-drop installation or convenient bookmark URL editing. Bookmarklets can also behave differently in reader modes, PDFs, embedded views, and other special browser surfaces. How do you create a bookmarklet from ordinary JavaScript?
The most reliable workflow is to write readable JavaScript first, test it in Developer Tools, then convert the working script into a one-line javascript: URL.
1. Choose a narrow action
Good beginner projects include showing page metadata, highlighting links, counting headings, removing a known nuisance element, copying the current URL, displaying image dimensions, or extracting visible links into a temporary panel. })();Test the readable version in the developer console first. Console success does not guarantee bookmarklet success: URL parsing, the missing or altered prefix, Content Security Policy, page timing, and browser handling can change the result.
3. Wrap the code in a self-contained function
Use an IIFE and a defensive completion value:

4. Add feature detection and useful errors
Selectors are assumptions about a page. Check those assumptions before acting:

5. Make the URL one line and encode carefully
Remove comments, unnecessary whitespace, unused variables, and line breaks before saving the final URL. Characters such as spaces, quotes, line breaks, #, %, and non-ASCII characters can cause URL parsing problems.
Keep the javascript: prefix intact. Do not blindly apply encodeURIComponent() to the entire string, because encoding the prefix can stop the browser recognizing the value as a JavaScript URL. Minify or encode the script body as needed, then test the exact final string copied into the bookmark.
Keep a readable source copy outside the bookmark. The saved one-line URL is difficult to review and maintain, particularly after minification.

The bookmarklet does nothing if the site uses a different ID, inserts the element later, or recreates it after removal. Removing a visual element does not necessarily stop the site’s underlying scripts or network requests.

It does not necessarily find links loaded only after an interaction, hidden behind application logic, or inside inaccessible frames.
Why do bookmarklets fail?
A bookmarklet can fail even when its JavaScript is syntactically correct because the browser, page security policy, DOM, timing, or target surface differs from the environment in which the script was tested.

What should you do when nothing happens?
- Open the bookmark’s edit dialog and confirm that the URL begins with the literal
javascript:. - Check that copying did not remove the prefix, insert line breaks, or alter quotes and percent signs.
- Test this minimal bookmarklet on an ordinary HTML page:
javascript:alert('Bookmarklet ran'). - If the minimal test fails, investigate the bookmark installation or the current browser surface.
- If the minimal test works, test the real script in smaller pieces and inspect the developer console for exceptions.
- Check whether the page’s Content Security Policy blocks the script.
- Check whether the selector matches anything and whether the click occurred before client-rendered content appeared.
MDN’s Content Security Policy guide explains why a bookmarklet may work on one site and fail on another. CSP can restrict or disable javascript: URLs and can also affect attempts to load external resources.
Why does a bookmarklet work in Developer Tools but not from a bookmark?
The two execution paths are not identical. Confirm the literal prefix, one-line formatting, URL encoding, and final void; remove dependencies on variables or helper functions that existed only in the console; then check for CSP and browser restrictions on script URLs. Chromium also documents anti-paste behavior for scripts entered in certain browser UI surfaces. Chromium’s security FAQ distinguishes bookmarklets from address-bar script pasting.
Why does a single-page application break a bookmarklet?
A bookmarklet runs when clicked and does not automatically know when a site’s client-side rendering has finished. The target may not yet exist, the site may replace the DOM afterward, content may load only after scrolling, or selectors may be generated and unstable.
For a small tool, wait briefly or poll for a known target:

PDF viewers and browser-internal pages are special cases rather than ordinary web documents. Chromium notes that PDFs expose more limited bindings than ordinary HTML documents, while pages such as chrome:// are privileged browser surfaces, not normal web pages. Chromium’s documentation on restricted contexts supports treating these targets as unsupported unless a specific browser documents otherwise.

What can bookmarklets access?
A bookmarklet generally works with the current document’s DOM and the capabilities available to ordinary page JavaScript. The current page context does not grant universal access to browser settings, the operating system, arbitrary tabs, private files, or every embedded document.
Same-origin policy still matters. A bookmarklet cannot use its presence in the top-level page to bypass browser restrictions on reading arbitrary cross-origin documents, frames, cookies, or APIs. A bookmarklet may see a cross-origin iframe element while being unable to read the iframe document. CORS and other browser policies continue to apply.
A bookmarklet also does not automatically gain extension permissions or background execution. If a task requires cross-tab coordination, durable storage, privileged browser APIs, scheduled work, or reliable access across many sites, use an extension or userscript designed for that purpose.

How should you use bookmarklets safely?
Read the complete source before saving a bookmarklet. Search for fetch, XMLHttpRequest, sendBeacon, form submission, cookie or storage access, and external script loading. These operations are not automatically malicious, but they reveal that the code may send data, persist information, or perform actions beyond a local visual change.
- Prefer short, understandable, reviewable source code.
- Avoid minified code from an unknown publisher.
- Do not run unfamiliar code while logged into a sensitive service.
- Use a separate browser profile for experimentation where practical.
- Be especially cautious with scripts that load remote code; remote code can change after you review the bookmarklet.
- Delete bookmarklets that you no longer need.
An external loader can make a long bookmarklet shorter, but it creates dependency, availability, trust, CSP, and supply-chain risks. A remote script can change without the saved bookmark changing, so external loading is not a casual substitute for keeping a readable local source.
Should you use a bookmarklet, userscript, extension, or console snippet?
Choose a bookmarklet when the task is small, manual, page-local, user-triggered, and tolerant of occasional breakage. Choose a userscript or extension when the task needs automation, durable settings, multiple tabs, reliable updates, browser APIs, background work, or a maintainable interface.

- Keep readable source code. Store the original script separately from the minified bookmark URL.
- Test representative pages. Include pages with missing targets, delayed rendering, unusual text, long lists, and different layouts.
