An anonymous trader has positioned for a short-lived Bitcoin rally after the 2026 U.S. midterm vote, buying 800 call options with a $90,000 strike and a November 6 expiration. The position’s approximately $68 million figure is the options’ face value, not money spent. The trader financed the bullish calls by selling other calls, so the trade is a timed, conditional wager rather than a simple bet that Bitcoin will permanently rise to $90,000.

What is the $68 million Bitcoin bet?

On October 20, 2026, a previously unidentified wallet on the decentralized options venue Derive bought 800 Bitcoin call contracts. Each contract represents one BTC, and the calls have a $90,000 strike price with a November 6, 2026 expiry. Derive described it as its largest open Bitcoin position and valued the face amount at approximately $68 million.

That headline number is not a $68 million cash purchase. It is the approximate notional exposure attached to the contracts. The buyer paid for the position through a multi-leg structure instead of purchasing the calls outright.

How was the position financed?

The wallet sold calls against the long November position and received about $940,000 in net premium, according to Basecamp Markets’ trade analysis. The legs are:

Position Strike Expiry Role in the trade
Long 800 calls $90,000 November 6, 2026 Provides upside exposure after the strike
Short 400 calls $90,000 October 30, 2026 Helps finance the purchase but creates early-rally exposure
Short 400 calls $100,000 March 2027 Provides premium but creates a later obligation above $100,000

The structure concentrates the intended bullish exposure between the October 30 expiry and the early-November midterm vote. It also means the trader has liabilities outside the November 6 calls: a sharp move before October 30 can affect the short calls, and a move above $100,000 by March 2027 can increase the obligation on the longer-dated short calls.

How do the 800 call options pay off?

A call has intrinsic value only when Bitcoin is above its strike at settlement. The detailed trade analysis says Derive settles these options using the 30-minute average immediately before 08:00 UTC on November 6. Across 800 BTC, every $1,000 that the settlement price finishes above $90,000 adds $800,000 of gross intrinsic value before accounting for the short calls, the premium structure, fees or other costs.

Settlement price Gross intrinsic value of 800 long calls
$90,000 or below $0
$95,000 $4 million
$100,000 $8 million
Each additional $1,000 above $90,000 +$800,000 gross

These figures describe the long November calls alone. They are not the trade’s net profit. The October and March short calls can offset some gains or create losses, depending on Bitcoin’s path and the terms at which those contracts settle.

Is Bitcoin expected to hit $90,000 after the midterms?

The trade signals that one wallet is paying for a move above $90,000 in a narrow window; it does not establish a consensus forecast. The calls expire only days after the vote, so the position is primarily a timing wager on a post-election breakout, not evidence that the trader expects a lasting repricing of Bitcoin.

Derive pricing cited in the reporting put the option-implied probability of Bitcoin exceeding $100,000 by Christmas at 12%, up from 9.7% a week earlier. The implied probability of falling below $70,000 by Christmas declined from 15.6% to 11%. Those are probabilities embedded in option prices, not promises or unbiased predictions, and they can change rapidly as prices, volatility and demand change.

What do other options markets say?

The broader picture is less bullish than the single-wallet trade. Deribit’s front-end 25-delta skew for Bitcoin and Ether was negative, meaning puts were more expensive than calls and traders were still paying for downside protection. In practical terms, one large Derive position targeted a short rally while another major venue continued to price meaningful demand for hedges against declines.

The two signals are not mutually exclusive. A trader can expect a sharp event-driven rally and still buy protection against a larger or longer-lasting sell-off. The difference is between a concentrated position and market-wide pricing.

Which Bitcoin price levels matter in the reported scenarios?

At the time of the detailed analysis, Bitcoin was near $80,400, below a 50-day moving average around $81,855. The analysis identified the following reference levels:

  • $84,898: initial breakout level in the reported bull case.
  • $87,396: the recent six-month high; a close above it was the next confirmation level.
  • $79,800: nearby support whose loss would weaken the bullish setup.
  • $73,031: approximate 200-day moving average and the downside objective in the reported bear case.

The source’s bull case required a close above $84,898 followed by a break of $87,396. Its base case kept Bitcoin roughly between $79,800 and $84,898, leaving the November 6 calls out of the money. Its bear case began with a break below $79,800 and pointed toward the 200-day average. These are scenario levels from the analysis, not independent forecasts.

Does election history support a post-midterm rally?

Past episodes do not provide a reliable election-only pattern. After the 2018 midterms, Bitcoin fell from $6,519 on election day to $3,509 a month later. After the 2022 midterms, it fell from $18,547 to $15,781 within two weeks, a period that coincided with the FTX collapse. Following the 2024 presidential election, Bitcoin rose from $69,372 to $96,946 over the next month. Market conditions and separate shocks differed in each episode, so timing alone does not demonstrate causation.

Nick Forster, Derive’s founder, was quoted as saying: “Bitcoin options signal a one-third chance of a greater than 10% swing in the price of the largest digital asset on Election Day on Nov. 5.” The trade report separately describes the midterm vote as November 3, so readers should treat the quoted November 5 reference as a separate date used in that statement rather than assume the dates are interchangeable.

What are the main risks in interpreting the trade?

  • Notional is not capital at risk: the approximately $68 million figure describes face value, while the net premium and margin requirements determine the wallet’s actual funding and exposure.
  • Short calls change the payoff: gains on the November calls cannot be evaluated without considering the October 30 and March 2027 obligations.
  • Path matters: a rally before October 30 or a late move after November 6 can affect different legs in different ways.
  • Settlement is specific: the November contracts use a 30-minute average before 08:00 UTC, not an arbitrary spot price observed during the day.
  • One wallet is not the whole market: Deribit’s negative skew shows continuing demand for downside insurance.

What should readers take from the $90,000 target?

The clearest interpretation is a concentrated, financed bet on a volatility burst after the midterm event. Bitcoin must be above $90,000 at the specified November 6 settlement for the long calls to have intrinsic value, while the short calls leave the trader exposed to moves before and after that date. Option-implied probabilities and historical election moves provide context, but neither confirms that Bitcoin will reach the target.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “800 Bitcoin call options” mean in BTC terms?

Each contract represents one BTC, so the position references 800 BTC. The contracts give the holder exposure to price above the strike but do not require buying 800 bitcoins in the spot market.

Can the trader lose money if Bitcoin rises?

Yes. The short October 30 calls can create losses during an early rally, and the short March 2027 $100,000 calls can create a later obligation above that strike. Net results depend on all legs, premiums, settlement and margin.

Why can a $90,000 call expire worthless when Bitcoin traded above $90,000?

Settlement uses the specified 30-minute average before 08:00 UTC on November 6. A temporary price spike or a later move does not determine the final value if the settlement average is at or below the strike.

Are the 12% and 11% figures reliable Bitcoin forecasts?

They are probabilities implied by Derive option prices at the time reported. They reflect market pricing and can change quickly; they are not guarantees and should not be read as objective odds of the outcomes.
