Microsoft announced on May 28, 2009, that its new search service would be called Bing. It described Bing as a “Decision Engine” designed to help people make faster, more informed decisions. The service became available to try on June 3, 2009, replacing Live Search as Microsoft’s search brand.
When did Microsoft announce Bing?
Microsoft revealed the Bing name on May 28, 2009. The announcement introduced it as both a new search service and a consumer brand, with the stated aim of helping customers make better decisions. Microsoft’s May 28 announcement called the service a “Decision Engine.”
Microsoft said Bing was available to try at Bing.com on June 3, 2009. A June 1 update said the rollout was underway and that Microsoft expected all search entry points to be using Bing by June 3; that was the company’s expectation at the time. The rollout update and June 3 launch-day post document those milestones.
Why did Microsoft choose the name Bing?
Yusuf Mehdi, then Microsoft’s Senior Vice President of the Online Audience Business Group, said the company wanted a fresh name suited to an Internet product: “It needed to be like the product — optimized for the Internet.” In his May 28 naming post, Mehdi described the criteria as “A name that was memorable, short, easy to spell, and that would function well as a URL around the world.”

Mehdi also connected the sound of “Bing” with discovery and the moment of resolving a decision. That was Microsoft’s stated explanation; the name should not be treated as an acronym based on this announcement.
What did Microsoft mean by “Decision Engine”?
Microsoft used “Decision Engine” to position Bing as more than a list of links: the company said it wanted the service to organize information in ways that could help people decide more quickly and with greater confidence. It also remained an all-purpose search engine. Microsoft’s contemporaneous launch description highlighted features such as categorized results, related searches, and a hover preview of webpages. Microsoft’s retrospective launch summary likewise identifies Bing as the successor to Live Search and describes those early features.
