Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The easiest way to install an app on Linux is usually through your distribution’s software center. If you use Ubuntu or Debian, you can also install packages with APT; Fedora uses DNF. The exact steps depend on your Linux distribution, so first check which one you have rather than assuming one command works everywhere.
Start with your Linux distribution’s software center
A software center lets you search for an app by its display name, review the listing, and install it without knowing the package name or using terminal commands. It is a good first choice for beginners because it normally uses sources configured for your distribution.
Ubuntu Desktop
- Open App Center.
- Search for the application and select its listing.
- Choose Install and enter your password if prompted.
Ubuntu’s App Center lists snap applications by default and also offers deb packages. Ubuntu documents APT as the recommended way to install Debian packages. Ubuntu Desktop: Install additional applications · Ubuntu Server: Package management
Other distributions
Software-center names and available apps vary by distribution and release. If an app is not listed, use that distribution’s documentation to find its supported package manager and package name. The commands below cover Ubuntu/Debian and Fedora; they are not universal Linux commands.

Install and update packages from the terminal
Ubuntu and Debian: APT
For a Debian package managed through APT, update the local package index before installing:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install <package-name>
Replace <package-name> with the package’s actual name, which may differ from the name shown in the app menu. Search in the software center if you are unsure what to enter. apt update refreshes package information; it does not itself install or upgrade all apps.
Fedora: DNF
Fedora’s package manager is DNF. Its documented install pattern is:

sudo dnf upgrade
Check the current Fedora documentation for the exact syntax applicable to your release. Fedora: Installing new software
Use Flatpak when an app is distributed that way
Flatpak is an additional app format available on distributions that support it. Ubuntu says Flatpak is not installed by default on Ubuntu, so first check your distribution’s instructions for installing and configuring Flatpak and an app source, or “remote.” Once set up, the documented workflow is:

flatpak search gimp
flatpak install flathub org.gimp.GIMP
flatpak update
flatpak list --app
flatpak uninstall org.gimp.GIMP
These commands search for an app, install it from the Flathub remote using its app ID, update apps and runtimes, list installed applications, and uninstall the specified app. A Flatpak app may need a runtime, which can be installed as part of the setup. Use the app’s actual ID and the remote from which it is available. Flatpak: Using Flatpak · Ubuntu Community Help Wiki: Flatpak
Choose a package format with its update and permission model in mind
Linux apps may be delivered in several formats. Their behavior depends on the distribution, app, source, and configuration; the table gives a general orientation rather than a guarantee for every package.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Format | Where it comes from | Dependencies and updates | Permissions and practical notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| deb with APT | A configured package repository, such as Ubuntu’s official repositories | Uses system libraries; manage installation and updates through APT or the software center | Ubuntu says deb apps have full access to system resources and their permissions cannot be changed in App Center settings |
| Snap | A snap store, including listings in Ubuntu App Center | Generally bundled; Ubuntu says snaps update daily by default | Usually sandboxed, but some apps use classic confinement and are not sandboxed |
| Flatpak | A configured remote, such as Flathub | Uses bundled runtimes; updates can be managed with Flatpak | Availability and setup depend on the distribution and configured remote |
| AppImage | A downloaded bundle from a source you trust | Self-contained; no automatic updates or central repository, so you manage updates yourself | Run the downloaded file after making it executable |
| Vendor binary | The software vendor’s website | Update handling varies; the Ubuntu Wiki overview says these downloads do not update automatically | Check the vendor’s instructions and trustworthiness before running |
The format descriptions are an overview from the Ubuntu Wiki’s app-format comparison. Ubuntu’s specific guidance says third-party deb apps may add their own repositories and have unrestricted access to system resources. Ubuntu Desktop states, “Using deb apps from third party developers is discouraged.” Ubuntu Desktop: Snap and deb packages

Install an AppImage or vendor download carefully
An AppImage has a different workflow from a repository package: you download a file, make it executable, and run it. For a file named Application.AppImage, the terminal commands are:
chmod +x Application.AppImage
./Application.AppImage
Download it only from the application developer or another source you trust. Because AppImages do not have automatic updates or a central repository, you must check for and manage updates yourself. Vendor downloads likewise require you to follow the vendor’s installation and update instructions.

- Installed with APT: use APT or your distribution’s software center to manage the package.
- Installed with DNF: use DNF to manage it; Fedora documents

The command says the package cannot be found
Check that you are using the package manager for your distribution and the package’s exact name. On Ubuntu or Debian, refresh the package index with sudo apt update and search the software center if the package name is unclear. A package may also be unavailable in your configured repositories.

The software center does not show the app
Try the app’s official distribution instructions. It may be offered as a Flatpak, Snap, AppImage, or vendor download rather than through the configured repository. Before adding a source or running a download, verify that it comes from the developer or another source you trust.
You installed the app but cannot find it later
Use the same installation system to check for it: the software center or distribution package manager for native packages, and flatpak list --app for Flatpak apps. An AppImage is a file you run directly rather than an app necessarily registered with the package manager.
What about Arch Linux?
Package-manager commands differ across distributions. The installation commands in this guide are for Ubuntu/Debian and Fedora; consult current Arch Linux documentation for Arch-specific steps instead of using APT or DNF commands.
