That is an installation count, not four billion distinct people or a count of devices that are vulnerable today. Microsoft described a file-handling flaw pattern called “Dirty Stream,” documented fixes for the apps it discussed, and advised users to keep apps updated.
What is a Dirty Stream attack?
“Dirty Stream” is Microsoft’s name for a vulnerability pattern in Android apps that share files. Android uses app isolation to keep one app’s private data separate from another’s, while ContentProviders offer a controlled way to share files. The risk arises when a receiving app accepts a file and trusts the sending app’s supplied filename when saving it into its own app-specific storage.
A malicious app can craft a filename containing path-traversal elements and send it with content. If the receiving app fails to validate the name and destination, it may write outside the intended location and overwrite files in its private data directory. Android’s guidance on improperly trusting ContentProvider-provided filenames explains the underlying risk.
What could an attacker do?
The impact depends on how the receiving app handles files. Microsoft’s examples include overwriting configuration or shared-preference files in a way that could expose tokens, or replacing a native library if the app loads libraries from a writable data directory. In the latter case, the attacker might achieve code execution with the app’s permissions. This does not by itself grant system-wide Android privileges.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
The transfer need not always begin with a user choosing an app in the share sheet. Microsoft also described a malicious app sending a crafted explicit intent directly to an app that accepts shared files, potentially without the user knowingly approving that particular transfer. Apps that accept shared files—including messaging, mail, social, browser, and file-editing apps—may be relevant targets, depending on their implementation.
What did Microsoft’s “billions” figure mean?
Microsoft Threat Intelligence said the Google Play apps it identified represented more than four billion installations, and that at least four apps each had more than 500 million installations. Those figures came from Microsoft’s May 1, 2024 disclosure; they are not a count of unique users, active installations, confirmed victims, or current vulnerable devices. Microsoft said fixes for the apps it discussed had been deployed as of February 2024.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Which apps and versions did Microsoft discuss?
Microsoft reported testing Xiaomi Inc.’s File Manager V1-210567 and WPS Office 16.8.1. It said Xiaomi’s V1-210593 addressed the issue, and WPS told Microsoft that version 17.0.0 addressed it. These are version findings reported in 2024, not a statement about the latest releases or the status of every version. Microsoft’s account is in its Dirty Stream disclosure.
What should Android users do?
- Update Android and your apps. Install updates from Google Play or another appropriate trusted source.
- Choose app sources carefully. Microsoft recommends installing apps only from trusted sources.
- If you used Xiaomi File Manager for SMB or FTP shares before updating it, reset those share credentials and check for unusual activity. This specific advice applies to people who used those features before the update; it is not a general instruction for every Android user.
How should Android developers prevent the flaw?
Preferred: generate a filename inside the receiving app
Do not use the remote provider’s filename as the destination name. Generate a unique internal filename and save the received content under that name. Android Developers’ official guidance says to “ignore the filename provided by the server application” and use an internally generated unique identifier instead. See Android’s ContentProvider filename guidance.

If the incoming name is necessary
Sanitize it, then verify that the canonical destination path remains inside a dedicated directory before writing. Validation must account for encoded URI path segments: traversal characters can become dangerous after decoding. Microsoft also points developers to Android Lint and CodeQL as analysis options for finding relevant issues.
