Apple turned AirPods Pro into hearing aids by combining audio hardware with a guided hearing test, a personalized hearing profile and software that adjusts amplified environmental sound. The Hearing Aid feature is designed for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss—not as a universal replacement for prescription hearing care—and Apple’s current documentation covers AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3, subject to compatible devices, software and regional availability.
How AirPods Pro work as hearing aids
Apple’s Hearing Aid feature uses a hearing profile to shape amplified environmental sound. That profile can come from Apple’s Hearing Test or from an audiogram supplied by a hearing professional. Users can adjust amplification, balance and tone; Apple recommends making changes gradually while getting used to the sound.
The Hearing Aid feature works in Transparency mode. A separate feature, Media Assist, applies hearing-test-based adjustments to media and calls. These are distinct functions within Apple’s broader Hearing Health set, which also includes the Hearing Test and Hearing Protection.
Apple describes the Hearing Aid feature as “a self-fitting, over-the-counter air-conduction hearing aid software” in its October 2024 technical white paper. That describes Apple’s software and intended use; it does not establish that AirPods are equivalent to every prescription device or appropriate for every hearing need.

How the Hearing Test creates a personal profile
Apple says its Hearing Test uses pure-tone audiometry. The software checks the earbuds’ fit and the surrounding noise before the test proceeds. Apple Support says the test takes about five minutes and should be taken in a quiet room; results classify hearing loss and suggest next steps. Instead of taking the test, users can add an audiogram from a hearing professional.
The resulting profile can inform adjustments to the Hearing Aid feature. Apple also allows users to export a PDF of their test result to share with a healthcare professional. The test and profile are aids to personalization, not a substitute for seeking care when symptoms or results warrant it.

What Apple says went into development
In its October 28, 2024 development account, Apple describes work at its Audio Lab in Cupertino involving listening rooms, anechoic chambers, audiometric booths, audiologists and head-and-torso simulators. The company says its teams used these facilities for design, measurement and tuning, including controlled speech-in-noise testing.
Apple also says engineers and audiologists performed thousands of internal audiometry and software test procedures before clinical validation. That is Apple’s account of its development work, not an independent audit of the lab or a published independent evaluation.

Apple’s white paper says self-tuning was compared with professional audiologist tuning in a clinical validation study that supported FDA and other global medical-device-authority authorization. This is Apple’s description of its validation and regulatory support. It should not be read as proof of universal effectiveness, equivalence to prescription hearing aids, or a reason to skip professional assessment.
Which AirPods support the feature, and what you need
Apple’s current documentation lists AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3. Setup requires a compatible iPhone or iPad, current operating-system software and current AirPods firmware. The Hearing Test also requires a quiet place and a suitable fit. Because availability depends on health-feature authorizations, it varies by country or region; check Apple’s current Hearing Health page for the live availability information.

Where AirPods may fit—and where they may not
AirPods Pro can be a convenient option for people who meet Apple’s stated intended-use criteria and can access the feature in their region. Whether they help in practice depends on hearing needs, fit, compatibility and personal adjustment. A hearing professional can help interpret an audiogram or test result and advise whether this type of device is suitable.
AirPods also include Hearing Protection, a separate feature. Apple says it translates sound signatures to lower levels in environments as loud as 110 dBA. That statement is not a guarantee of protection in every loud setting or against impulse noise, and it should not be taken to mean AirPods are suitable protection for all hazardous-noise conditions.
