Apple’s second-generation AirTag improves close-range finding: Apple says Precision Finding reaches up to 50% farther, the speaker is 50% louder, and its sound can be heard from up to twice as far as the first-generation model. It also adds Precision Finding on supported Apple Watch models. Those changes may matter if you often lose tagged items; owners whose original AirTags already work well may have little reason to replace them.
What changed in AirTag (2nd generation)?
Apple announced AirTag (2nd generation) on January 26, 2026. The updated model keeps the original form factor, and existing AirTag accessories remain compatible, according to Apple’s announcement.
- Farther Precision Finding: Apple says the new Ultra Wideband chip lets Precision Finding work from up to 50% farther away than on the previous generation.
- Expanded Bluetooth range: The upgraded Bluetooth chip increases the range at which an item can be located. Apple does not give a specific distance for this improvement.
- Louder speaker: Apple says the speaker is 50% louder and can be heard from up to twice as far away as the prior model.
- Apple Watch finding: With compatible hardware and software, you can use Precision Finding from your wrist rather than having to take out your iPhone.
These percentages and range descriptions are Apple’s product claims, not guaranteed results in every setting. Walls, placement, interference, and other environmental factors can affect what you experience.
How AirTag finding works—and what the upgrades affect
Precision Finding helps when you are nearby
Precision Finding guides you toward a nearby AirTag with visual, audio, and haptic cues. The second-generation model’s stated range improvement and louder speaker relate to locating an item close by—for example, finding keys tucked behind a cushion or a bag in a room.

The Find My network can help when the tag is farther away
If an AirTag is outside the paired iPhone’s range, Apple’s Find My network can help. Nearby Apple devices detect the accessory over Bluetooth and send its approximate location to the owner. That network-based location is different from Precision Finding: it can help show where an item was detected, but it is not the same close-range directional guidance.
Apple says AirTag is designed for tracking objects, not people or pets. It also describes unwanted-tracking protections, including cross-platform alerts and frequently changing Bluetooth identifiers. These are Apple’s descriptions of the product’s safety features.

Which iPhone and Apple Watch support the expanded features?
Compatibility depends on the feature. Basic location through Find My and expanded Precision Finding have different requirements; owning a device that can use Find My does not, by itself, establish that it supports the expanded Precision Finding range.

Is AirTag (2nd generation) worth it?
It makes more sense for a first-time buyer who will use close-range finding
If you are buying your first AirTag, the second-generation model is Apple’s current version and adds longer-range Precision Finding, a louder speaker, and supported Watch-based finding. Those upgrades are most useful if you frequently misplace tagged items and expect to search for them nearby. At the U.S. launch prices, Apple listed one for $29 or a four-pack for $99; those were announcement prices, so check current price and availability before purchase.
Existing owners should upgrade only for a problem the new model solves
If your first-generation AirTags reliably help you find your belongings, replacement is harder to justify. The clearest reasons to switch are that you often struggle to connect during a nearby search, cannot hear the original speaker in hiding places, or want to find a tag using a compatible Apple Watch. If you mainly rely on approximate Find My network location and your current tags meet your needs, the new local-finding improvements may not change much for you.

In a February 2, 2026 hands-on account, MacRumors reported maintaining a Precision Finding connection at greater distance than with the original in its indoor comparison, including with obstructions, and described the speaker as noticeably louder. The publication’s view was that most current owners probably do not need to upgrade, while people who rely heavily on AirTags could benefit from buying a few new ones. That is one publication’s experience, not a universal test result.
Choose a single tag or a four-pack based on how many items you will track
At announcement, U.S. pricing was $29 for one and $99 for four, the same as the previous generation, according to Apple. A four-pack makes sense if you already know which several objects you want to tag; buying extra trackers without a use for them does not make the finding features more valuable. Apple’s FineWoven Key Ring was listed at $35 U.S. and sold separately at announcement, but a holder is optional and existing AirTag accessories remain compatible.

What the launch does—and does not—say about luggage
Apple’s launch announcement attributes to SITA figures of a 26% reduction in baggage delays and a 90% reduction in incidences of truly lost luggage. Apple does not present those carrier-reported outcomes as a study of AirTag alone, so they should not be read as evidence that buying this tracker will produce those results for an individual traveler.
