No Microsoft source cited here establishes that the company is removing a key privacy feature for millions in October 2026. Microsoft’s privacy-change history lists a September 2026 update about personal-data collection, Copilot and Xbox diagnostic data, but not an October removal. A separate, dated change concerns Microsoft Entra sign-in methods—not consumer privacy settings.
What Microsoft has actually announced
Microsoft’s Privacy Statement change history records a September 2026 update concerning personal-data collection, Copilot and Xbox diagnostic data. It does not announce an October 2026 removal of a consumer privacy feature. The materials also do not establish that millions of people are losing such a feature.
There are documented changes to Copilot privacy controls, the visibility of some voice data in the Privacy Dashboard, and authentication methods for Microsoft Entra organizations. They affect different services and audiences; none substantiates the headline’s claim as written.
Copilot privacy controls remain available for personal accounts
Microsoft says its updated Copilot app for web, desktop and mobile has been available since August 18, 2026. Its current privacy-controls guidance applies to people signed in with a personal Microsoft account, not work, school or organizational Microsoft Entra accounts.

The listed controls cover memory, shared experiences, chat history, web search, personalized advertising and importing Edge browser data. To stop Copilot saving memories, go to Settings > Personalization and turn off Saved memories. That does not delete memories already saved; deletion is a separate action under Manage.
Microsoft’s separate Copilot privacy FAQ describes personalization and model-training behavior for the older app and directs users of the updated app to newer guidance. It says personalization is on by default where available for the older app, and distinguishes that setting from personalized advertising, which has its own control. Do not assume those older-app details apply to every current version.

What changed about voice data in the Privacy Dashboard
The Privacy Dashboard lets signed-in users view and clear some data associated with a Microsoft account. The data shown can include Bing and Cortana searches, Edge browsing, location, voice, media, and app or service activity. What appears depends on the account, region, service and data type.
Microsoft says new voice clips collected through speech-recognition products no longer appear in the dashboard because those clips are no longer associated with a Microsoft account. Older clips associated with an account before October 30, 2020 may remain visible for as long as Microsoft keeps them. This is a change in account association and dashboard visibility—not evidence that all voice privacy controls are being removed.

Windows has a separate control: Settings > Privacy & security > Speech, where users can manage Online speech recognition. Clearing visible voice activity removes audio recordings, but Microsoft cautions that it may not remove all information associated with that activity. See Microsoft’s voice-data guidance for the distinction.
The dated change is an Entra sign-in transition, not a privacy-feature removal
Microsoft Entra is an organizational identity service. Its transition guidance concerns authentication methods for users enabled for SMS or voice—not a consumer privacy setting. Microsoft says passkeys became the default authentication experience starting September 1, 2026 for those users, with an enrollment prompt after an MFA sign-in.

Microsoft-provided SMS and voice delivery is scheduled to retire on different dates:
| Users in scope | Microsoft-provided SMS and voice retirement |
|---|---|
| Most users, including internal guest users | February 1, 2027 |
| Global Administrators and external users | July 1, 2027 |
Users in scope who have only SMS or voice when their applicable deadline arrives must register a passkey to continue signing in, unless their organization arranges a supported telephony-provider path. The guidance applies to public cloud environments; Azure AD B2C is out of scope, and Microsoft says Entra External ID will have a later announcement. Details are in Microsoft’s Entra transition guidance.

What Entra administrators should do
Organizations affected by the authentication transition should identify users enabled for SMS or voice, prepare another authentication method, and communicate the change in phases. Microsoft lists passkeys, Windows Hello and FIDO2 as phishing-resistant options. The documentation describes a temporary opt-out from automatic passkey enablement during the transition, but says it does not opt a tenant out of the later enforcement dates.
For organizations with a valid operational or regulatory need to retain SMS or voice, Microsoft says configuration through Microsoft Security Store becomes available beginning October 30, 2026. Soprano and Telesign are named as initial private-preview providers, with more expected by general availability. This is a provider path for eligible organizational needs, not a consumer privacy option; see the Entra retirement FAQ.
How to check a privacy-change claim
First identify the exact product, setting and audience named in the claim. A change to dashboard visibility, a personal-account Copilot control and an organizational sign-in method are not interchangeable. Then check Microsoft’s dated announcement or product guidance for the specific setting, its effective date and the actions available to affected users. In this case, the official pages establish distinct changes, but not an October removal of a key privacy feature for millions.
